15 Best Bars in Portland, Maine | Condé Nast Traveler

"Lazzari has more of restaurant vibe, with a lengthy dining room and bar anchored by a beautiful, custom-made wood-burning oven, out of which comes some of the best pizza in Portland. Drinks focus on bold, approachable flavors; try the Italian Mojito and blackberry basil Margarita. They keep pies coming out of the oven into the wee hours, so this is a great place to come at the end of the night." - Joe Ricchio

This pizza spot seriously hit the mark open late when most places are shut, and the vibe was exactly what we needed. The drinks were on point (strong and tasty), the music created such a fun atmosphere, and the staff were super friendly and attentive. Our server made great recommendations and kept everything moving smoothly without rushing us. The pizza? Delicious. We’ll definitely be back, this place just became a go to for late nights out!

We were craving pizza and decided to try out Lazzari. The lure of the wood fired oven did not disappoint. The pizza was just the right amount of crispy and chest, with fresh flavors and fun takes on classics. It's decor is definitely different, with black being the primary coloring, but it all came together nicely. The bathroom definitely needed some work, and unfortunately, the service was slow for a relatively dead part of the afternoon. However, I would head back for the pizza anytime.

Google
Very nice bar to hang and get drinks. Food was ok, just not great. Not a place for food but looks like a great place to hang out. I would recommend getting their pizza and other bar type food which I would think would be better

Google
This was one of the only restaurants open late in Portland on a Friday night. The margherita pizza was delicious, filled with fresh basil and had a nice chew. The touch of flakey salt was a bit too much for me but otherwise incredible pizza. The hot honey wings were just okay, however, the homemade ranch was so flavorful, I would absolutely pay for a side portion!

Google
I ordered the Amatricana Pizza and my husband ordered the house pasta with white clam sauce. Both were very good, however the pizza could have used a few more minutes in the over, as it was a little wet. But overall, great taste!!

Google
Huge and yummy calzones!!!! Salads were big too. Wings were very tasty! Definitely thought to share! Love the leather booths. Service was good as well!

Google
Truly tasty pizza! The crust is the perfect combination between chewy and firm. The toppings are many... No worries on not having enough on the topping side. The sauce was balanced not being overly thick nor watery it melded with the toppings to create this good flow and bites that were not dry but also not an avalanche of sauce and toppings covering you down the front of your shirt. This is a great spot to grab a pie and chill among friends.

Google
Stumbled across it while visiting, must say it was a great find. Pizza was good, atmosphere was a chill, it’s definitely one to come back to.

Yelp
Unfortunately I was hangry and forgot to take photos of my food-but photos others have posted are pretty accurate. Pizza was very good-it is indeed that crispy chewy sourdough Neapolitan pizza which is very hard to find. Good wood fire taste. I wish the sauce was a little richer but that's just me nitpicking. Four stars because I do not at all recommend the Pot de Crème dessert. It was described as chocolate mousse with a peanut butter crumble. What I got was not that. The mousse was not a mousse at all but a grainy rather watery unset not good tasting chocolate. The topping was crushed M & M's which I had to scrape off because I have an allergy to food coloring. Just not good. Go for the pizza!!

Yelp
After my let down at Colettis Pizza Factory I needed to wash away the salt taste with a proper neapolitan style pie and I am so pumped that Lazzari was open before I ventured back to Jersey. Very cool spot with Brooklyn vibes. The pizza came out looking beautiful with fresh basil which I appreciate because sometimes the charred basil can be a bit bitter. Everything was good, I was pleased I just wish the dough had poofed a little more for the classic airy and light Neapolitan style crust but perhaps it was because I went in early in the day. Regardless, definitely worth giving it a shot. Thanks for restoring my faith in Maine pizza!

Yelp
We came here for some late night pizza, and the environment was very chill and great for conversation. We shared the mushroom pizza and the char on the crust was perfect! I thought the pizza itself could have used a bit more flavor, but overall, it was tasty. I appreciate the late night hours.

Yelp
We needed a late snack after getting in for our trip and this was one of the few options open past 12 on a Thursday night downtown. Not crowded but the pizza oven was going strong! We ordered the amatriciana pizza to split and it came out in less than 10 minutes. It was super delicious with a thin chewy crust and was the perfect size to share! The vibes are nice Italian restaurant with nice tables, real flowers but the music is very punk - fun vibe! If you are in need of some late night pizza I definitely recommend Lazzari.

Sammi T.

Yelp
it's okay. but if i'm paying $40 for a tiny personal pizza and small salad, it should be way better than okay. i would recommend 100 places over this one unless they cut prices by 25%

Yelp
Everytime I come here it's a delight. Food is always great. The calzone is to die for. Brought my friend here for his birthday the other night he loved it. Bartender get props too she makes a mean mocktail.
google avatar

Danielle V.

Yelp
I have been here a few times and overall it's just average. The service is okay but lots of times they seem like you are bothering them. The food is alright but overpriced. Drinks are also pricey. The pizza is a hit or miss. They do have a large bar and lots of seating and a couple TVs to watch sports. They also serve food late night so if you are looking for pizza late night this is a good spot.

Yelp
We love this place! By far one of our favorite pizza spots in the area. The wood fire oven pizza is always cooled to perfection. The service is always great and they are very helpful. The spot is fairly large, dark and plays great music. Perfect for a Friday/Saturday night. We got the Fried olives and ceaser salad. Two amazing starters from here. The olives come with a garlic aioli which matches perfectly! We got the pepperoni pizza with onions and the bolognese pizza. Both are perfect. The sauces are on point and the leoparding on the crust shows true effort into cooking these pizza. My personal favorite is the bolognese. The mix of the meat sauce with the crust and the cheese is something i would want to have every single day. They also have a pretty decent wine selection. Check this place out if you're able to. One of the best pizzas in Portland by far. You will not be disappointed. *this is only our opinion*

Yelp
Wow. My margherita pie, purchased as my consolation for waking up at 3a, had a superb crust. Thin and airy, lightly crisp, placed on a pad to help prevent sogginess, and not dense in the least. Gorgeous browning and charring, too. On a Friday night at 8p, absolute peak, takeout was still ready in 9 minutes. I'm on a solo weekend, though, and I would've really liked to soak in the ambiance. They wouldn't give tables to a solo diner, and when they offered the consolation of a bar seat, they seemed blissfully unaware that every one of them was taken.
google avatar

Yelp
Some of the best pizza in Portland. Their apps are really good, we had the hot honey wings which were SPICY and so good. Their margherita pizza and regular pepperoni pizzas are amazing. Super fresh ingredients and we love their cocktails, too!

Yelp
Last night we stopped in at this pizza place around 10pm and it was such great service. The host was also the busser, the server and food runner. Honestly she was kill in it. She was wearing all those hats and with great service and timing. The bartender was also a big help to customer service as well, from what we noticed. They really handled the crowd great. Regarding the place, the vibe was cool, the food was so good! We were seated quickly and good food followed. We ordered a Cesar salad, fried olives (a first but soooo dang good), and shared the pepperoni pizza. The pizza was really good and fresh. Definitely hit the spot. Check them out when you can.
google avatar

Graham P.

Yelp
A pretty average experience overall. Nice cozy vibe and fun trivia, pizza looked good but wasn't crispy really at all and had a somewhat odd flavor I couldn't place. Service was hit and miss throughout.
google avatar

Heather P.

Yelp
Fun spot with great pizza, atmosphere and service. We stopped in for late night pizzas each of our three nights in Portland. Pizzas and calzones were terrific, and the bartender was wonderful.

Yelp
I wanted to like Lazzari, I really did. I expected a pizza place, but instead found myself in the Club Penguin Night Club. If I had wanted a late night club experience at 5pm on a Tuesday (which I do not), I would have gone to a bar, or somewhere else I could dance the night away. I wanted pizza, and instead found myself surrounded by exceedingly loud music enjoying a mediocre pizza within feet of an empty, checkered dance floor. Whatever the target audience for Lazzari, it is certainly not me.
google avatar

Jenny H.

Yelp
Excellent service and phenomenal food. A bit loud at night but worth it. A must try! Check it out!

Yelp
My fiancee and I ended one of our first date-nights at Lazzari over six years ago. We've been back plenty of times to enjoy coffee and ice cream after a date night in Portland or to enjoy their full menu of pizza and other Italian-American staples. Service can be sometimes slow, as they could get busy and usually keep a relatively slim staff. But, be patient because flavors coming out of the kitchen and bar staff don't disappoint.
google avatar

Sar P.

Yelp
This is a pizza only review - I've been visiting them for years and the vibe is excellent but the pizza crust was very doughy and almost not cooked and I ended up putting the pie in the trash as it was pretty inedible - I love Neapolitan pizza and this is not it The other stuff at their restaurant is 4/5 but be cautious of the pizza

Kylie B.

Yelp
Rare are the times you sit down and get quickly welcomed with a menu, glass of water & friendly service as fast as you do Lazzari. A well oiled machine with clean glassware/taplines, cozy booths, sourdough delicious pizza, fried olives with anchovies, the best meatballs in town, food until 1a. You can count on consistency. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
We popped in Lazzari after walking around downtown Portland for a bit. It was so cute inside and we sat by the window and people watched. The grapefruit spritz was so refreshing. Our server was quick and very nice. My boyfriend and I both got a slice. His cheese one was a little too toasted but still delicious. The veggie one was amazing and had the perfect kick from the banana peppers. It wasn't overly watery from the veggies too! It was the perfect afternoon snack in Portland. Definitely worth a visit!
google avatar

Patrick C.

Yelp
Definitely one of the better pizza places in town. Has a huge wood fire oven and they make a very good crust, good sauce and have well done, sourced toppings. The rest of the menu is good too. Have eaten most of the items and have liked everything. They even have some deeper cuts of traditional Italian food like arancini. They also have a good happy hour which is hard to come by in Portland. It can get really busy but is one of the few good places to eat that you can reasonably get a table without several weeks of advance notice in the summer.
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
What a great find for pizza. In town for my little sisters wedding and stopped by after wedding for some food. Great char on edges, sauces and ingredients were all top notch. Next time I'm in visiting my family I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Karley M.

Yelp
My family and I had an amazing experience here while on vacation. The ambience was laid back and felt like an Italian diner. Staff was really nice and prompt. They have a great happy hour that includes a delicious aperol spritz. We loved the pizza and meatballs and Cesar salad! No complaints what so ever!

Yelp
Every time I do a search for best pizza in Portland. Maine, these guys score high, very high. I just had to try it because I love pizza! Wow. What good pizza they have!. All pizzas are 10 inch and cooked in a wood fired oven. I got the sausage and onion and it was sooo flavorful! Cooked to perfection (see picture), I'm not sure how long it took from when I ordered but, I was very pleased with the super fast and attentive service. And they had 11 local beers on draft to choose from. I will be back!

Ryan B.

Yelp
Similar to other reviews, it felt like my friend & I were a bother to the staff. Walked in looking for my friend thinking she's arrived before me and the bartender was cranky and asked me to go back to the front and wait for staff (understandable, but could have done so in a kind way?). Person who helped me to a table and brought water did not say a word, no eye contact or acknowledgement. The waitress was good--kind and patient and responsive. We ordered two pizzas (10" each) and my friend ordered one drink. The bill with a reasonable/average tip was $70. Absurdly expensive given the size (small) and quality (OK, but nothing great) and the one drink--which was $14 for a minimal pour. Do yourself a favor: save your money and go somewhere with good service and better food. It's not worth it.

Yelp
Overall very solid place to grab a bite to eat in Portland. For a Sunday night dinner, I had the pepperoni pizza and fried zucchini. The fried zucchini comes with a homemade basil ranch dressing and it is absolutely amazing! The wood fired pizza is tasty. Mine was a little burnt on the side, but I didn't mind. The service is ok. Standard I'd say. Nothing that stood out. The lighting is low and the whole place has an orange glow... gives off a cozy fall vibe! The music was all 80s/90s/early 2000s jams. I was absolutely jamming, but the music was unnecessarily loud. They could have turned it down quite a bit and it still would have been easy to hear. Overall, not bad. Would return!
google avatar

Emily V.

Yelp
We had a great dinner here! We got the meatball appetizer to start the meatballs were so moist and not tough at all. We also got the calamari which was delicious. Then we split a clam pizza which was great. Service was nice and we had some wine for happy hour. I would definitely come back here for my Italian food fix.
google avatar

Clayton T.

Yelp
Yes, for sure! The wood-fired pizzas here are delicious with that perfect crispy crust. The atmosphere is cozy and laid-back, making it a great place to hang out with friends over some good food and drinks. Best pizza in town!

Lincoln B.

Yelp
The hostess said that it would be a 20 minute wait which ended up being 45minutes. But when we finally sat down no one came to our table none of the servers even looked at us. So we left. Also the music was way to loud never going back to that shit show not recommend.

Yelp
When Lazzari first opened in 2017, we were big fans. The cocktail program was creative and delicious, as was their menu. And honestly, over the first couple of years: both of those things only got better. They continued to add interesting options, continued to be a cool and welcoming space to hang out, and continued to have friendly and engaging staff. But as of the roaring 20's, Lazzari is not that place anymore. 1. They've changed the cocktail menu, and now it's kind of underwhelming. There's nothing here I couldn't get elsewhere. 2. They've changed the food menu, and now it too is kind of underwhelming. Also my calzones are always *very* bready. Like 2/3 dough: there was a giant slab of mozzarella directly in the center of it that slid out after cutting into the thing. Also recently I paid $2 extra for spinach (we joked about how there was more basil - three leaves - on top of the calzone then there was spinach inside it), and $3 extra for goat cheese (there was a tangy, watery substance under the slab of mozzarella, so I assume that was it). 3. Two drinks, two calzones: $60 before tip. 4. Finally, the seating. Those high tops are so uncomfortable. I don't know if the tables are too high and the chairs are too low (or maybe I'm just too short for them), but the only way we could sit to eat/drink was by hunching over our food the entire time. The booths are comfortable, but at our most recent outing here we were only allowed to sit at the high tops (...despite there being plenty of other options). Personally, my time with Lazzari is over. Thanks for the great memories, though!

Bob W.

Yelp
Pizza good as always (white clam and margherita); meatball appetizer pretty good (grilled bread for dipping was superb); caesar salad fairly weak per salad-loving daughter. Service excellent!
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
My nose and ears love this place. The smell that comes out of the brick oven fills the room with an amazing combined scent of wood and baked bread. The infused liquors that sit upon the bar, not far for a shiny cappuccino machine, will have you intrigued and ready for a bevy. Both times I've stopped in, there has been modern unedited music that I actually enjoy, but I can't imagine a family having a seat, thinking they are going on for normal pizza lunch, and the "F bombs" start to penetrate their children's ears. There should be a warning of sort on the door. Again, I like that kind of music, but I've never heard it played nonchalantly in the afternoon at a pizza pub. Now for the food. We started with the suppli appetizer (fried risotto/mozzarella balls). The sauce was just okay and there were cool spots in the middle of the balls, indicating they could have used a few more seconds in the fryer. For pizza, we tried the margherita and the mushroom. The same red sauce from the suppli was used on the margherita and the basil was just a large pile of leaves thrown on top. If you wanted some with every bite you had to shred it up and spread it out on your own. The mushroom pizza had a porchini sauce, which we both preferred over the red. However, the ricotta and other toppings were thicker towards the middle, which left the dough to cook unevenly. The outer crust was perfect but under the toppings, the dough wasn't really cooked all the way through. In the end, we both left filled, but I do think there are other places in the area that offer better wood-oven pizza.
google avatar

Maria P.

Yelp
Really good wood fired pizza and wings. The service was fast and friendly, and it looked like a place that's good for later night food/drinks (we went on a weekday and it wasn't closing at 9 like some other places in Portland were). Definitely worth a stop
google avatar

Allie P.

Yelp
I loooooove Lazzari's food and bevies 10/10!! Their calzones are huge and so yummy and definitely a must try

Yelp
Not to be that person. But I have to say it. This place bombed and not in a good way. Honestly, we were SO disappointed by the service. It was a Tuesday night, were they busy ? A bit. It didn't seem "crazy" there were plenty of empty tables, but who knows how short staffed they were or what was going on behind the scenes. But the lack of service or attention we received this evening, genuinely was disappointing. we were given water and then not looked at for another 30 minutes. We placed our drink order and after an hour of being there; with nothing but water- we prepared to leave. It was once we were leaving that the waiter ran to our table; inserting himself IN THE BOOTH, leaning in and asking "if we were going to be ok?" As in, could we handle the wait; because he had just "yelled at the bartender for our drinks". We were extremely uncomfortable because at that point we just wanted to go somewhere that would serve us- we were hungry. We stayed out of discomfort and confrontation with the waiter, we regretted it. We wish we had felt more comfortable to leave; but we didn't. I respect how busy businesses in Portland are. I respect short staffed places and how tough it can be. But the service was distant, rude and confrontational. I've been to Lazarri before and chose to come here this evening to celebrate - but it turned our night pretty sour unfortunately. After Over an hour ish we were able to enjoy our food. But the service took away from the experience in every aspect. Big bummer overall.
google avatar

Cosmo X.

Yelp
The service was good. The place was clean. The pizza was thin crust. The meatballs were delicious. The bread was toasted. Nice all was well good atmosphere relax.

Mackenzie E.

Yelp
the wait times at this place are atrocious regardless of the time and day, don't even bother trying here
google avatar

Crissy R.

Yelp
Looking for a late bite to eat after a concert at State Theatre this is the place. Located just across the street, this place has everything from a wood-fired pizza, to pasta, and salads. My friend and I were starved, so we chose a Margherita pizza, Caesar salad, and a meatball appetizer. Staff was friendly and attentive throughout our experience! Our food and drinks were promptly served even though they were crazy busy. The meatball was flavorful, saucy, and the ricotta that accompanied super creamy. The salad was so fresh and flavorful! Heads up, it does have real anchovies in it. The pizza was cheesy, saucy, and delicious! Overall, my friend and I were highly satisfied with our delicious meal! Highly recommend, superb food and amazing staff.

Yelp
Lazzari is another GEM of a place for us night owls to enjoy. It's open until 1am AND has pizza. What else could you ask for? We swung by on our last night in Portland. It's conveniently located near a lot of other shit but is the only place in the vicinity that is still open late. It has an inviting ambiance from outside. Due to the sheer size of the place (it's huge), they are able to allow for patrons to socially distance easily. They sat us in one of the booths which was separated from the party in the adjacent booth by a tall plastic divider. We definitely were in our own little bubble. They also use the QR code system for their menu which, as I have said before, is the FUTURE OF MENU ORDERING. Unfortunately, they don't have the draughts on this menu so I had to squint over the heads of some other patrons at the bar to try to read it and they probably thought I was sketchily staring at them which was pointless anyway because I couldn't read shit. The waitress re-directed me to another menu that was behind me. The drink menu is appealing. Both Tina and I ordered their Chili Mango Lavender Lemonade because how could you NOT with chili mango tequila, lemon, lavender syrup, lavender bitters, and soda water. I was also intrigued by their Blackberry Basil Margarita and Double Espresso Martini. The lavender lemonade was absolutely delicious. They also have a lot of intriguing pizza options including the usual margherita, pepperoni, with some unique variations: brussels sprouts and panchetta and rocket (romato, garlic, oregano, arugula salad, pickled red onions). I ordered the classic margherita and Tina snagged their white clam pizza with clam sauce, pecorino, mozzarella, parsley, and lemon. The pizzas were exceptional. They were freshly baked in their wood fire pizza oven. I don't eat seafood but I tried a bit of Tina's clam and even I have to admit it was amazing. I wish the pizzas were larger or it if was more socially acceptable to order 3 for individual purposes. We had a long night ahead of us, AND I wanted to try some more of their delicious food, so we placed an order for their Caponata to go. We didn't get a chance to rip into this until the following morning but even so, it was delectable: grilled and crunch bread topped with ricotta, herbs, eggplant, red peppers, and capers. MMMMMM. This place is fantastic and I would highly recommend stopping by.

Kayla P.

Yelp
Pizza was good, but would've been better with a side of ranch, which I could not experience, because the server never came by from the time we got food to when we were completely done. Spoke to her once.

David T.

Yelp
Quick service. Meatballs were great. Bolognese pizza could have been cooked a little longer but it was good.
google avatar

Arthur S.

Yelp
Came in at 10 pm on a Wednesday for a pizza and a beer while in Portland. I ordered a pepperoni...add mushrooms. When we got the pizza, there wasn't any mushrooms on it. When we told the waitress, she admitted it was her fault and asked the chef to make us a side of mushrooms. I would think for an $18 pizza, it would be remade or, at the very least, wouldn't be charged for mushrooms...think again! Putting that all aside, the ingredients were all fresh but the pizza was burnt in spots. All good if that's how you like you pizza, but I'm all set.

Gayl A.

Yelp
Great pizza, horrible service. We got a table really quickly but easily waited 15-20 minutes for our menus.
google avatar

Briana L.

Yelp
A great spot with good music and food. I loved the pizzas, especially the white clam pizza. The calamari was excellent as well. Definitely a spot where you can get dinner with some friends. If you have a pet, they have a small area outside for dining!

Yelp
Perfect for me , nice and dark vibe I'm always looking for that late night meal Love the location. just been to the state seen a show and need a bite to eat ? It's just right over the road . Pizza is classic , drinks will do the job
google avatar

Rina A.

Yelp
Definitely love the vibes inside this place. It's a calming, darker, decorative ambiance style, but then they have vulgar pop and rap music playing in the background. Was more of the newer age music and not your typical restaurant music. My sister who is 40yr didnt know any of the songs, but I knew majority of them at 26yrs. The energy is just fun and different here. Our waitress was cool calm and collective kind of like the "care free" energy, but did her job right. I'd be aware of this if you're going to bring kids here, keep that in mind. The pizza does take a while since it is wood fire so be patient. Maybe it's just because I'm use to my moms sauce having stronger spice for garlic and onion, but the sauce was just meh to me here. Pizza was still good and kind of wish the basil was chopped up instead of a big leaf placed on top too.
google avatar

Claire B.

Yelp
Grabbed dinner @lazzari_portland before a show right down the street. The vibes of the restaurant are very trendy and in your face in a good way. The music is on the hip hop/rap spectrum and is on the louder side, but not too much that you can't hear the people you're with. Service was laid back and you never felt rushed. The drinks menu is quite unique but still small. Not many vodka and rum based drinks. Highly recommend the limoncello spritz (picture 1) if you're into sweeter drinks and want something that doesn't taste like alcohol. The pizzas were phenomenal. The crusts are super thin and chewy which is the perfect combination. The pepperoni pizza (picture 2, bottom) had the right amount of spicyness and a good number of peps. The quatro formaggio (picture 2, top) was also delicious. The spinach was nicely seasoned and managed to stay crispy on the pie. Tiramisu was ordered for dessert and was demolished, hence no picture. Nothing super special about it, but it was by no means bad. Drinks: 7.5/10 Food: 8.5/10 Ambiance: 8/10 Overall Experience: 8/10

B G.

Yelp
Great decor, but the pizza was just not my cup of tea. Make the cannolis right there so they are not soggy and they do taste good.
google avatar

Allie S.

Yelp
This is a good restaurant if you are looking for a sit down pizza place that isn't crowded yet it's in a pretty accessible if staying close to old port. I ordered the Margherita which was good, nothing out of this world, but good enough and fairly priced. Most importantly, they didn't burn the crust so that's already a success for a wood fire baked pizza restaurant. The staff was attentive and the pizza came out quickly.

Yelp
The hours have yet to be updated as they just began a brunch menu as of 7/2/21 that begins 12p-4pm. We were glad to be one of the first to enjoy this extraordinary brunch. We shared three items to taste as much as possible and had all 4 Bellini's. Hey...this is the dedication I give to my fellow Yelpers, so no judgements! Try it out!!
