Le Bénaton

"In the heart of Burgundy, Beaune is known the world over for its annual charity wine auction held in the iconic Hospices edifice, famous for its glazed tile roof. A steadfast champion of fine French food and wine, Japanese chef Keishi Sugimura, couldn’t have found a town that suits him better. Trained in Japan, the chef excels in the art of the porkpie, which earned him the title of vice world champion in 2013. Flavoursome seasonal dishes sprinkled with creative touches." - Michelin Inspector

Beaune has exceptional restaurants and La Benaton is one that sits comfortably in that category. The food is absolutely delicious and is Michelin Star worthy. The service is excellent but you do need to keep an eye on over zealous wine pouring waiters, who top you up constantly, which can leave you with the impression that you are being rushed through a bottle of wine. The restaurant is quiet and had an air of exclusivity, lacking a warmth and vibrancy which may dissuade young foodies from visiting, which would be a great shame as the food is absolutely superb. Dog friendly and well worth a visit!

Very friendly people . We arrived totally wet from the rain. They offered some towels to dry. Nice little restaurant. Mixture of Asian- European tastes. Nice wine arrangement. Excellent food, light and nicely presented

Be aware that the price for the tasting menu is not the same as on the website (now 85euros and 110 euros). Food is good but not at the level of a one star restaurant for this price (and we tried many). The wagyu beef tataki is a very good dish (delicious!) and definitely worth a try. Lamb was good too and well coocked. Unfortunately this is not consistent over all the dishes (e.g. fish overcooked to my liking). Fyi: Their is no air conditionning and it was really hot inside. Overall food is very good but simple and a bit disappointing for the price and for a michelin star restaurant.

Michelin starred restaurant with Japanese influences. Went for a Friday night dinner, the place wasn't packed much. Menues are diversified and yet not too wide, though the wine selection offers wines from all over France. The gaspacho with the lobster and the wagyo Fake Fillet were splendid and definitely the highlight of the meal. Bread is served hot and crunchy. Service was good, though it took 25 minutes to get the check.

We had a wonderful evening outside with excellent food, great wine, and a friendly staff. Our French is not very good and the staff walked us through everything in English. The food was so creative and delicious with beautiful presentation. The trout pictured below was a highlight for us!

Google
A culinary peak. This is a restaurant with ambitions and with an outstanding service. We did the set menu (5 entries), and each serving broadened our smiles. The wine list is impressive: From the affordable but acceptable to the unobtainable.

Yelp
Fantastic surprise for me. One of few places open on Sunday and the concierge at L'Hotel de Beaune was able to grab me their last table. Service exceeded that of Jules Verne. And food quality surpassed expectations as well. A hidden gem. The Japanese influence created a savory addition to the cuisine of Bourgogne. A Fusion delight deserving of Michelin ratings. Ambiance was charming, and the staff, though not required or expected, assisted me with my English speaking limitations. C'est si bon!

Yelp
I have to admit, I was really excited to dine at Le Bénaton given its stature in Beaune and it was a pretty hit and miss meal for me. Le Bénaton has been awarded one michelin star and I can see why but, with a few tweaks it could surely be a much more elevated one star restaurant. Granted it was the slow season when we dined but, the service was lacking big time given the price point, etc. On to the food... I should note that we ordered a la carte so that we could taste their recommended highlights. We started with a beautifully poached shrimp dish. It's custom for most French restaurants to start you with some sort of warm soup to awaken the palate and this was definitely elevated to another level. The shaved live zest meant serious business and provided a nice acidity to the creamy broth. The next two dishes were definitely the highlight of the meal: - Paté en coûte - pigeon, cepe, fois gras, and sweetbreads wrapped in a puff pastry. You can see by the picture that this en coûte was insanely beautiful and believe me, it tasted just as good as it looked! - Fois gras of duck - served with black currant, quince and pop corn. Another stunning dish and what execution! For my main I ordered the crusted sea bass which was the only mistake of the night. It was heavy, clunky and not something I would have expected from the kitchen. Everything else I ate was so refined and this felt very, well, "steakhouse fish" if that makes sense. In total, Le Bénaton is worth the stop. Just stick to one of their preset menus and I think you'll be in good shape. Oh, and the wine list is silly. :)

Yelp
We had a very pleasant experience at Bénaton. We were wine tasting around town in Beaune and everyone seemed to rave about Le Bénaton. As chef is Japanese, it has touches of surprises. Overall it was innovative, delightful and full of flavors but with great French techniques. We were there for Christmas Eve special menu. Happy to report that everything we tasted were no cutting corners, really innovative menu created just for Christmas Eve. My fav was the raw white wish wrapped around blue crab meat, caviar on top but with a few drops of passion fruit purée that make it light and refreshing. The scallops were cooked perfectly in a chestnut cream broth, that I enjoyed every drop of it. The chicken dish was rolled in with truffles and foie gras. The flavors really married well together. Decor was minimalist and cozy, with about 12 tables all together. Amazing meal in Beaune. Michelin worthy minus the stuffiness

Yelp
Great food here. Not just fancy and innovative - it actually tasted good. Much better than another Michelin-starred place we tried. It was mom's birthday and they made us feel special.

Yelp
I visited Le Benaton after being recommended by the head waiter at Stephane Derbord from the night before. I tried to make reservations the night before but of course due to the language barrier, nothing was confirmed. I headed down to Beaune to see the beautiful french countryside along with trying to find this local favorite. Luckily, I found it after many disagreements with the GPS and to my initial impression, thought it was closed. It was of course a Sunday and arrival at 1:30pm may have hard pressed. Waltzing to the front door just to see the menu, to my surprise it was opened. Walking through, in amazement, was only one table left open just for 2. After much persistence with the single waiter, he allowed me to join for lunch and that's when the party began. The restaurant is quaint, seating only 20 people at maximum capacity. The kitchen can be heard and is only steps away from the closest dining table. It's a no frills, humble, and down to earth dining ambiance. Luxurious and simple all at the same time. I had the lunch special, 3 courses for a set price which seemed to be the choice of almost all the diners. The following were the standouts (and almost the entire course) Foi gras, melted french cheese, fresh oiled lettuce salad, petit fours, chocolate cake log - all from what my memory can expel from a month ago. Definitely a place to visit if you are in the area. Divine and overwhelming are two words that describe the food. You will not want to exercise or think about that new year's resolution after eating here. Life is simply too short to bypass this place.

Yelp
A great meal from start to finish from the new Japanese chef. The finest pigeon I have ever eaten in my long life in France. Great amuse-bouche as tasty as they were beautiful... Excellent wine list, friendly service. Michelin starred, yet not full. I can just say: do not miss this place if you want to eat a very fine meal. We had the 60 euro menu, very fairly priced for this quality. I cannot wait to go back!

Yelp
Went here for my wife's birthday, the food and service was excellent. I especially loved the pate and the beef fillet. Highly recommended to checkout if your in Beaune.

Yelp
For a 1 star Michelin this was not only a disappointment but sad. They were out of many things on a small menu, but the substitutes they offered seemed to be pulled together from leftovers in the walk-in. As a party of 2 we expect the waiter to know who ordered what. ( we were one of 5 tables, total of 11 patrons). The food was good, nothing to write home about, the wine list below expectations and the service extremely mediocre.

Yelp
I dream of the meal I had at Le Benaton. Be sure to have the snails. They were amazing. The layers of flavor with every dish were superb. I would say my meal and the meals of my friends were some ot the best we have ever had in our lives. I will be sure to travel to Beaune, again, just to eat at this restaurant! FYI, be sure to have a reservation as it is very small and appears to serve for a limited time each evening.
