Bistrot de la Place

"In the heart of the village where Chabrol filmed Le Boucher (1970). Old stonework, beams and tasty country cuisine including andouillette and confit de canard." - Michelin Inspector

Really tasty and good value restaurant in a gorgeous village. Serves up classics with a level of flair. Their wine list has some lovely local bottles at very fair prices. I can absolutely recommend Le Bistro de la Place if you are holidaying in the area. And do book an outside table if the weather is fine.

We stayed in Limeuil but tried this restaurant because so many restaurants were fully booked during the holiday of 14th of July in France. This resto has a really nice outdoor sitting tables in the center of the town. We didn’t book in advance so we only got a window table indoor, which was not too bad. The food was only average and a bit expensive compared to other similar restaurants in the region (we took the 33€ menu)

Staying in Tremolat we wanted to try both restaurants and was able to get a table on the off chance at Le Bistro outside on the patio. We had some bread with a small plate of pâté to share while waiting for the main (we don’t spoil a dinner by having a starter), both my husband and I ordered the magret du canard, pomme de terre and seasonal vegetables. We asked for the duck to be ‘rosé’, and although it was quite near it didn’t look like it had been rested enough as when it was cut it bled a little and was a bit tight, the skin on it however was gorgeous & well rendered, the pomme de terre was also lovely and just needed seasoning, the vegetables were good & well cooked. We had a bottle of Julien de Savignac Rosé 2016 which was superb. OH had a chocolate fondant with chocolate ice cream and I had a strawberry tartlet ice cream and a chantilly cream. We both thought the desserts outshone the main course which is a shame as the restaurant is attached to the Le Vieux Logis Michelin star hotel/ restaurant in the village. The staff were quite friendly but were also very busy. A reasonable price of €87 but could do better on the main course.

Frankly, one of the most disappointing meals ever. Most dishes presented with not an iota of creative imagination......1st course... foie gras with a minute dried fruit accompaniment presented on a plate with not even a lettuce leaf garnish. Main.....duck breast(requested well done....obviously a cardinal sin!)arrived cremated, with unedifying vegetables which one assumed started life as potatoes and onions. Chicken supreme with an unidentifiable drizzle of a "sauce".....accompanied by a sloppy, tasteless melange of veg. Desserts.... a pavlova, nicely presented with tasty strawberries and a pleasant sorbet. The meringue base however was very dry and akin to those pre-prepared and available in supermarkets. Baked Apple....very acceptable. We went on a Wednesday.... with hindsight ,we should have saved our money and patronised The Dordogne Chippy where customers were obviously getting double the amount of gastronomic satisfaction at a fraction of the price!

Wonderfully prepared meal, and excellent service. Wish I had been feeling better to have truly enjoyed it. A mid-range priced restaurant in a lovely setting.
