Têtedoie - Review - 5th Arr. - Lyon - The Infatuation

"It’s difficult to say what’s prettier: the presentation of the dishes or the panoramic views at this modern spot on Fourvière Hill. It’s the unshowy kind of fine dining where you’re equally welcome in jeans and sneakers as a pants suit. Set lunch and dinner menus have courses like pike quenelles in green crab and ginger bisque, candied duckling leg, or risotto with Pastis-flambéed prawns. Best of all is their liberal approach to sauce—after your cod ballotine gets doused, it’s left on the table so those who wish to fish for their own lunch in molten butter are welcome to do so. The café gourmand is a showstopper." - Anna Richards

After two unforgettable visits to Tetedoie’s gastronomic restaurant, I had high expectations for Le Bistrot, located just one floor below. And it absolutely delivered. Though more casual in style, Le Bistrot shares the same high standards when it comes to atmosphere, service, and above all, food. We were lucky to secure a last minute lunch reservation, and from the moment we sat down, it was clear this wasn’t just any bistro experience. The menu is creative and seasonal, showcasing the freshest ingredients, all expertly prepared by a team of incredibly talented chefs. Every dish was beautifully balanced and full of flavor—elevated yet approachable. The service was warm and attentive without being overbearing, and the overall ambiance was relaxed but refined. One of the best parts? The value. Considering the quality, care, and experience offered, it’s impressively fair. Le Bistrot may be the more casual sibling of the gastronomic restaurant above, but the food is just as memorable. It’s a perfect spot for those looking to enjoy refined cuisine in a laid-back setting—definitely worth a visit.

Google
Excellent location and view, solid French cuisine, and prices equal to or better than far less interesting tourist-trap bistros. Highly recommended.

We were there two weeks ago for lunch. Everything about the experience was exceptional. The view, the choices on menu, food and service was exceptional. The food was amazing in its creativity, favors and quality of product. Our server, his name started with an “0” was knowledgeable, kind and provided excellent suggestions and service throughout. Pace was very good. When we left, the Bistrot was full and for this level of dining experience, it is hard to understand how they can continually provide this kind of quality experience and without showing the pressure they were under. Amazing….

For us the place was not worth of money. Lovely views, but the food was not spectacular as we expected it to be.

My new favourite restaurant. We went for my birthday dinner and it was excellent. We tried several new things and they were all great. We are already planning a return visit. Our server was also tres getille.

Oh my goodness, went for lunch and have never been so disappointed! The food was 3rd rate, €44 menu? leeks with haddock cream, served straight from the fridge, must’ve been a while leek in chunks, no seasoning, runny cream and a non descriptive crumble on the side. Beef bourguignon main, in a ‘le creuset’ style dish, 1/4 full, I don’t have a big appetite but could have eaten double! Tiramisu dessert, tiny sponge in the middle and runny foam on top. Sesame Creme brûlée had NO sesame. To top off this whole sad experience the staff had no interest OR skills. Had no idea how to serve dishes, passed plates to customers to pass over??? Leant over burning crème brûlée and didn’t say goodbye to any customers, and that’s just the start of it. There is no way these staff members are going anywhere near the upstairs Michelin star restaurant-or are they? How can this go on? As I’m a tourist and not looking for a ‘freebie’, I would welcome some sort of justification/explanation because I really grudge spending my hard earned money in this and don’t think other people should be duped??

Unwelcoming, inhospitable and demonstrative attitude right from the door…

Google

Yelp
Beautiful rooftop views of the city. We tried the eggplant starter which was really good with the baguette. The duck was good as well complemented with creamy potatoes.

Yelp
I really wanted to enjoy this place. But for the hype in the price, the food was just unacceptable. No flavor no seasoning there's so much more that could have done with each of the dish, but each fell short. In addition, I totally understand that the service at micheline is slow, but the service we received was snail passed - at times we had to wait close to 20 minutes between courses. We were not greeted by a sommelier nor given an intro to most of the dishes. A quite disappointing experience especially for our 25th wedding anniversary...

Yelp
This is a restaurant that we read about before we got to Lyon. When we arrived in the city, we made reservations online for lunch. This truly is an exceptional dining experience. Chef Tetedoie actually owns many restaurants in the area. But he actually built this structure high in the hills overlooking Lyon. And the furnishings of this restaurant are superb. The staff is overwhelmingly excellent. We chose the fixed launch menu with wine. The food as presented was visually stunning. The only negative note, however, was that the monkfish was overly salted. My wife was only able to eat a portion of it. This was a five star experience that I can only award 4 stars.

Yelp

Yelp
This restaurant was delicious. The desserts were fabulous. The staff was incredibly kind. The view of Lyon is absolutely breathe taking. It is a bit difficult to find the restaurant exit at the end, but the people there will help you.

Yelp
HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!! INEDIBLE FOOD!! NYE RUINED!! Save your time and money and avoid this restaurant!! This should NOT be is a Michelin starred restaurant! We made reservations months in advance to have dinner at the restaurant for NYE. We were all quite excited as all our other Lyon restaurant experiences had been amazing. We stayed at the hotel right across the restaurant so it was an easy walk over. The first impression of the restaurant is nice but a bit confusing as there are multiple rooms. We were seated in a room separate from the main dining room as we were a family of 10 guests. The room was fine, nothing special, no real decor or style. Appeared more like a board room. The music initially worked but stopped half way through the dinner service. Our hostess, Margarita, was very nice. She tried to make the evening as pleasant as possible. It was not her fault that the entire tasting menu, experience, and customer service was so disappointing. The 7 course tasting menu had absolutely no thought put into it. Felt like it was just thrown together prior to the seating. There was no theme/use of seasonal vegetables or progression of flavors. Everything basically has the same broth poured over it. We tried to eat some of the the food until we got to the seabean spaghetti course. This was out right disgusting. It was thrown together with raw tofu and served to us. We asked to speak to the manager-- she was not accommodating and did not even try to improve the experience. We left the restaurant hungry and very unhappy! This was not the NYE experience we anticipated. There are so many other wonderful restaurants in Lyon -- this place should be avoided at all costs! I would never recommend this place to anyone!

Yelp
It's hard to find fault in a Michelin rated restaurant in a gastronomic city that also has a hill top view. The chefs technical expertise is well showcased and he has a lot to prove as a decorated MOF. His signature dish that comes with a side of lobster ravioli in a lobster bisque is worth the price of the meal. In fact, I would say sauces are the highlight of his repertoire. However, what struck me about this place is the understated midcentury modern decor and the quick pace of the meal. The service was either understaffed or they were trained to hustle because they moved quickly (maybe because they thought Americans eat more quickly?). I don't know but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Be aware that the view at lunch is vastly different then that at night so plan accordingly if thats what matters to you.

Yelp
I don't consider having ever really eaten at a restaurant until dining at ChristianTêtedoie. This is easily one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. Firstly, for the restaurant to have such a grand reputation, it is perhaps surprisingly modern and casual. Most people wore business casual and there were also families present dressed even more casually (but appropriately). It sits high on the hill and looks down on most of Lyon with most tables exposed to the wonderful views. It is also next to a hotel which hosts a bar that is open to the public in case you go too early like I did (Têtedoie opens at 730p). The staff was so well trained and attentive that it reminded me of an army but somehow without being imposing or stuffy. I had a wonderful conversation with one of the waitress who advised me on the popular local sites. The staff speaks multiple languages so communication was no problem - asking about recommendations in the city was welcomed. Secondly, the food is spectacular. No matter the expense, you walk out feeling like it was all worth it. I had the veal's head/lobster dish, which was heavenly, with seemingly endless surprises of desserts and amuse bouches. The cheese board was offered and an appetizer, however I abstained from both. Next time I will try the cheese as there are many options that can only be offered in Lyon.

Yelp
The first half of the dinner was a Michelin 1 star. Second half, we were forgotten. And charged for two glasses of wine they never brought! (I'm not sure what is worse, wine without a course or being changed for it!). With one of the courses, the server who was delegated to speak English language to us shot an evil eye to her co worker. And although I found it funny, it was not Michelin quality. Disappointed and this meal was not inexpensive. :( AND they knew we were unhappy and sent the person collecting payment to get our feedback. Not any of the (presumably) multiple senior people we encountered in the first half of our meal. Poor person, she doesn't deserve that.

Yelp
Excellent food, outstanding service, and a stellar view of the city. Being in town for a few days I was able to get reservations (quite flexible as well seeing as we were late). From start to finish the experience was excellent; we had the 7 course tasting menu and it was allot of food to the point where we were struggling to finish plate 5. Bottom line if you like exquisite food and don't mind dropping a few hundred euro this is a great destination.

Yelp
Beautiful views. Two courses were so over salted they were practically inedible. Staff was very young and had a few errors. One example was pouring the red wine into my white wine glass while my white still in it. I ordered the Prix Fixe meal with a wine pairing, wines were all very young. I would have preferred to select my own wines, but this was not an option. This restaurant is over-rated by Michelin and absolutely not worth a visit.

Yelp
I paid $140 to bite into a piece of glass that was found in one of my dishes. The glass was at least the size of a quarter and hidden within the quinoa served to myself and my husband. I told the servers immediately, which they promptly replaced, but by this time, I was no longer feeling the restaurant. I expected better quality from a well-known restaurant in France, especially at such a price and location. The chef himself never came to our table and apologized, instead, they schmoozed my husband and I with extra dishes . You can already tell that the servers were afraid to approach our table because of what happened. They apologized several times (Never the chef, but the servers) and later gifted us with jam and a signed cookbook from the Chef. They gave us a "discount" at the end of our meal but I don't agree with that. We ended up just paying because I wanted nothing to do with this restaurant. I still ended up paying around $140 to chew on a huge piece of glass that could have potentially cut open my mouth, or worse, travel down my esophagus and hospitalized me. It saddens me to give this review but this is what happened, and yet we hear such good things about this restaurant from family and friends in Lyon (my husband is local to Lyon.) At this level of reputation, I expected nothing less than perfection but it was far from that.

Yelp
Very disappointing. Came here for dinner following a recommendation from a colleague. Our experience was underwhelming. The food was so-so and pales in comparison to many of the non Michelin star restaurants in Lyon providing top quality, innovative dishes at a quarter of the price. I have no issue paying Michelin star prices as long as the price matches the promise. I found the dishes lacking in balance, both in terms of taste and quantity (too much of one ingredient versus another, e.g. the roasted foie gras was fine, but too much versus the tiny piece of pear and other accompaniments; similarly the scallops were fine, but completely overpowered by the excess of mushrooms and sauce). Overall, the dishes lacked finesse and could be found in any decent bistrot. The amuse bouches were particularly poor. Frankly they were boring and uninspired. Even the bread was disappointing! On a positive note the wine pairings selected by the sommelier were excellent. That said the sommelier although very nice and capable was lacking a certain confidence and ability to interact effectively with customers. Non-food aspects: - Upon arrival (at this 1-star Michelin restaurant) we were initially ignored by the two hosts who were both on the phone. On the way to our table our host stopped midway realizing he did not know which table to bring us to. He left us standing while he went to confer with his colleagues. - We were then left at our table for five minutes without any greeting or offer of an aperitif... - The service - for a Michelin star restaurant was generally quite amateur and lacking grace. Pity. The interior is of course a matter of taste, but I personally found the art ghastly!

Yelp
During our recent day trip to Lyon my sister made reservations for the terrace at this restaurant. The entire experience was phenomenal. The views from the terrace were post card worthy. We each had the prix fix (2 courses 28 euros) and the consensus from all three of us was this was one of our favorite meals in France. My sister and husband had the duck and I had the scallops with spaghetti. We all had the chocolate creme brulee and it was spectacular. We ordered a bottle of rose at 34 euros (quite reasonable) which was the perfect complement to our meal.

Yelp
Calling from out of the country trying to make a reservation on the phone months in advance, and was told to do it on the internet. She immediately hung up the phone. Obviously not helpful nor courteous. Very rude. The restaurant needs to apologize to my 11 year old daughter, who has sufficient command of French language, attempted to make the reservation. We will skip visiting this establishment.

Yelp
We chose this restaurant when planning our trip to Lyon, based on its Michelin-star rating, location, and ease of making advance reservations online. We found the service to be absolutely stellar, the cuisine (for the most part) superb, and the setting nothing short of spectacular. Our table looked over the Rhone valley spread out below the hilltop locale, and took our breath away. We were fortunate to arrive before sundown, so we got the full effect. To call our service competent and professional does not do it justice: it was as close to flawless as human beings can manage: quiet, efficient, and always attentive. With all this praise for the setting and the service, I'm sorry to say the cuisine did not always reach the same high level, although for the most part it was very close, and in some cases soared to unheard-of heights. The look of each dish amounted to "food as art." Each item presented could have easily been featured on the cover of the former Gourmet magazine. There were prix fixe tasting menus, priced at a lower, middle and high level. There was also a "chef's choice" menu, at 120 Euros. We both went for the mid-priced menu, and were quite pleased with the result. High point: the veal entree. No point in going into excessive detail on items ordered, however, as I'm sure the chef varies the menu daily, depending on available ingredients and the direction in which his creative winds are blowing. No matter: you can trust him to overwhelm you with the mastery of his craft. At a time when more and more young lions are bolting out of culinary school (or chemistry programs) to take the helm of the latest trendy dining locales in the U.S., it's good to spend some time in a place where food preparation and presentation is an art, not a science or a fashion trend. The classic approach has lasted for a reason.

Yelp
We just had a btl of rose and some snacks here at an off hour. Nobody was there. Amazing view of Lyon. Wait staff was super. Check this place out but be ready to spend a bit more up here than down below.

Yelp
A must visit restaurant for two reasons: (1) as noted by other reviewers - you will get a spectacular view of the city. We visited the restaurant late at night and the view and experience were phenomenal. (2) the cuisine is terrific. We asked the waiter to see if the Chef can surprise us - something that is not on the menu. The Chef took the challenge and delivered several wonderful courses that were not on the menu. Fish and Pork and salads... and what not. The wine was delightful and the service praiseworthy! After such a meal, it is recommended you walk down the street "La montée du Gourguillon" , which is near the restaurant. A great way to digest and burn extra calories! If you do not want to eat at the restaurant - just have a drink or a cup of coffee with one of their wonderful deserts and enjoy the view. The Romans built their temple near this place 2000 years ago or so - therefore, you will not be making a mistake. Enjoy!

Yelp
Arrived at 7:50pm for an 8:00pm booking and at 10:40pm was asked if we wanted dessert! Frankly, I had lost the will to live by then so no, I didn't want dessert! The wine was finished before the main course had been served more than two hours after we had sat down. The food, when provided, was nice but the pace was outrageously slow!
