This place has well-made, very classic French desserts with a few twists here and there. In terms of execution, they’re comparable, although not necessarily better than a lot of the other trendier, more famous bakeries in SF. However, unlike all those other bakeries, Le Carousel Patisserie is very French while the other bakeries are French-fusion or French-inspired.
You’ll find chocolate filled croissants and raspberry filled croissants here, not brightly colored tropical fruits you haven’t heard of. This makes them a bit different here in SF, and it’s a nice place to take someone who’s a bit newer to bakeries and gets overwhelmed with too many new choices.
However, just cause they’re mostly classic French doesn’t mean they’re entirely classic French. For example, they had a pumpkin French flan tart that they sold around Thanksgiving. As of this review, they’re running a galette de rois special for January, with the standard almond frangipane filling or a pistachio-grapefruit filling. They already stand out a bit in SF by being classic French, but I like that they still do some different stuff to distinguish themselves without deviating too far into the Asian-French fusion that so many other bakeries in SF do.
Also, one of the owner and pastry chef has a sweet French accent. The barista when I went to the cafe at Tilden was also very French.
