At Le Coucou, A Day In the Life of a Line Cook | Bon Appétit

"Opened in June 2016, this modern take on classic French dining quickly became a critically lauded, high‑end destination — earning a three‑star review from a major paper, placement among top new‑restaurant lists, praise from prominent food sites, and a national award — and now runs dinner reservations out about a month. The dining room is golden‑lit and formal, prices are premium (one seafood entrée, for example, is finished with a rich beurre blanc and pickled daikon), and the kitchen is copper‑accented and intense: roughly 14 line cooks execute precise, fish‑forward preparations such as sole set in a vermouth‑butter sauce dotted with peeled grapes, powder‑white fish cakes, monkfish bathed in shellfish broth with a sautéed lobster claw, and cloudlike pike quenelles served in lobster broth. Culinary leadership includes a celebrated executive chef who honed his craft in Paris and a demanding but supportive chef de cuisine who mentors staff; the restaurant is part of a larger restaurateur group that provides some employee benefits. Service nights are high‑pressure and meticulously timed, and despite a more balanced gender mix in the kitchen than is typical, the disparity between tipped front‑of‑house earnings and cooks’ wages — and the difficulty of making a sustainable middle‑class life in the city — remains a persistent reality." - ByAmanda Shapiro

My friend and I found this restaurant by accident, but we were pleasantly surprised. The menu has only a few options for appetizer, main course and dessert, but you can choose appetizer/main course + dessert for 25 euros or all three for 31 euros, which is a great deal. The flavor combinations are unusual, but delicious and beautifully presented. The waiter is very friendly, and the atmosphere is pleasant :)

Playing vice versa. Le Coucou had an intriguing idea of reversing some dishes and the presentation. The kitchen comes out of the coulisses and opens up to you as your enter the restaurant. All the magic happens behind the bar, where two lady chefs sizzle pulled mushroom on the plancha, a'd where cakes welcome the gourmands. I found it fun to order pork ribs as entrée and sandwiches as main dish. Had my taste buds surprised and pleased with delicate sauces and fresh ingredients.

Crafted in flavor and beauty! I had the Courgette soup, white fish main and rhubarb dessert. Everything was balanced perfectly.

Our last dinner in Paris. I couldn't have had a better meal. After a few bites we realized we needed to order more, it was that good. The tempura vegitables were on a delicate aioli. The oysters also sublime, in a green curry sauce. It sounds over powering, but it was perfect. For mains we ate the COBB sandwich and the Aranchini. I've had risotto balls before but these were really special. Don't miss the vanilla-cardamom chou. I had the lemon meringue. Both were great. Coudos to the staff. Friendly, informative, and a delight.

The food was amazing: perfectly cooked, complex, full of flavour and texture, in small portions, but just perfect for a healthy lunch. The only bad aftertaste was the billing. Somehow, I was billed 25 euro for a "2 dish formula", which I assume included a 17 euro dish + a 6.5 euro dessert = 23.5 euro. Not sure if it was a mistake, or if the billing is somehow too complicated - I noticed this only when I was too far to sort it out.

The positives: Nice decor/ambience generally. Good wine selection. Negatives: All food just okay flavor wise (not 4.7) Took ages to get the menu and then drinks and then food and then the wine refill just never came. Veggie plat was such a waste. Was literally a small handful of peas with maybe 1/10th of a burrata smeared on the plate and some (size of your thumb) olive oil soaked bread - and it cost between 23-25€ for said dish.

Everything was perfect. We went there last night and loved it! The waiter was on his own but was so helpful and didn’t seem stressed at all. Every bit of food was insane. The presentation was perfect and the flavour was incredible. Best of all, it was so affordable. €39 for a 3 course meal! Couldn’t recommend this place enough.

The menus looked interesting. The flavour a beautiful surprise. Highly recommend this cozy restaurant with truly amazing food prepared with attention to detail in the pairings of flavours. Bravo.
