The Best Montreal Cafés for Working or Studying | Eater Montreal

"Spacious café by day, bustling bar by night, Darling is ideal for making the transition from hitting the books over a coffee and a pastry to grabbing drinks with friends. Darling has ample table space available during the day and a dining menu comprised of tasty small plates, including oysters, cheese, and charcuterie. Note that Darling is much less work-friendly once it switches over into bar mode in the early evening." - JP Karwacki

Where to Day Drink in Montreal | Eater Montreal

"A fittingly-named café-bar gem that oozes vintage cosiness, and a touch of steampunk, Le Darling serves beer and cider on tap. in an interior fit for lounging elegantly while reciting Oscar Wilde witticisms, or just checking emails on a laptop. It also seems to be among the most Instagrammed spots in town, for what it’s worth." - Karin Murray-Bergquist

One of my favourite bars in Montreal! The vibes inside cannot be beat and the decor is stunning. The cocktails are so delicious (I had the Gin Poire and I had to stop myself from ordering a second one). It was my first time ordering a “main plate”. I got the popcorn chicken and it was delicious, not too oily and the sauces were amazing. The smash burger was also a hit. The service was very good and fast, especially considering the bar and patio were completely full. Perfect for date night!

Google
Amazing cute bar with a nice interior, cool atmosphere and also outdoor patio. We enjoyed the oysters which were super fresh, the cod fish bites, the mushroom pasta and the burrata. Waiters were all friendly and attentive. We loved this place and will definitely come again soon!

Google
This bar is absolutely gorgeous and they brought the vibes too!. We stumbled upon this place when we were passing through montreal (were from toronto) and my i loved the interior of this place. Wasn't too busy, we came here on Sunday night around 12-1am (not alot of NICE places stay open late anymore so loved that for us). We got a few drinks, a spicy martini and another fruity martini both were DELICIOUS. Our server was great too, he recommended a few spots for us to try out.

Google
Third day in a row for me at this charmer…the food, the atmosphere and a special shout out to the amazing staff! This must be on everyone’s “Montreal “to do” list”! Lovely inside or outside on the patio. I highly recommend.

Google
There’s something about this place that keeps me going back! Their drinks are amazing—I’ve tried almost all of them. The oysters are cheap yet fresh and tasty. Loved the chicken dish too. Great with colleagues!

Google
The service is bad. The food is mid. Only oysters that's good. The seat layout is cramped. The decorations is nice but the lighting is dark. I don't know that it's because i didn't speak french or im a person of colour. Neither of them is the valid reason to give such a bad service anyway. Our table didn't get the same service as the table next to us that are locals. I went there for my birthday which it came out to be very disappointed (dont come here on your special day). We went there before the store is packed. There're a lot of two tables seats that has a lot of space but they chose to sit us in the corner at the kitchen door which the space and table is super tiny and busy. In details, only one server that did his job in the most bare minimum way. He gave us room-temp plain water without any refill when he kept refilling our next table ice cold plain water. We sat near the bar and couple of servers came by chatting there. They saw us trying to asked for help (we stared into each other soul) and they walked pass. We tried to ask for a plate couple of times but everyone straight up ignore us.

Google
I walked into this spot very last minute and the staff was so lovely and amazing. I came for brunch but the waitress said it turns into a bar in the evening and I will be coming back here. Ugh and the food was incredible.

Giorgio Russo

Google
Didn't have the chance to try the food, but the bar and the service was good. Could use some cleaning around, dusty and worn out. Charming with nice decor and a hot spot with the locals, relaxed atmosphere.

Yelp
We went to Montreal for the weekend and dropped by this bar for some drinks which were delicious and with a very good price. The atmosphere was pretty cool, dimmed lighting and interesting decor. We definitely want to come back there again.

Yelp
Perfect place for an afternoon drink Great drinks, great friendly service and great drinks in a cozy and vintage ambiance.

Yelp
Such a great bar to grab drinks with friends when in Montreal! The interior is so perfectly decorated to match the atmosphere. The space is great and has unique components. The drinks we had were delicious and I would definitely come back to try more on the menu. The waitress was great and attentive to us.

Yelp
Super cool and hip bar restaurant. Great for people watching too. We didn't try the food but saw some great looking dishes come out of the open kitchen. Drinks and draft beer and ciders are fabulous. The place was booming on a Friday night with many people waiting for tables or a spot at the bar. We will definitely be coming back here the next time we are in Montreal.

Yelp
Came here for drinks with my partner and a friend who lives here. The place was packed on a Saturday night - indoor and outdoor. We were lucky that with no reservations we were still able to grab a high top table for 3 people closer to the bar. Our server was extremely friendly with great energy. We also loved the ambiance in here. Lower warm lighting all around with cool fixtures and interesting decor. The drinks we all ordered were also delicious. We got two rounds of drinks for 3 people and with the tip it was just over $135 CAD with a tip which was expected when getting cocktails.

Yelp
They absolutely nailed it! I also took a goat cheese puff pastry stuffed with spinach. And i lost my mind. They change the menu often so better to go sooner than later. The decoration is charming and the staff is even more lovely. They tried the food, they love it and they know what to recommend.
google avatar

Koji S.

Yelp
My favourite bar in Montreal, purely for the whimsical ambiance - the dim, warm lighting and the shelves of varied books. The drink selection tilts toward ciders of all sorts (although they have a broad beer selection as well) - I think I tried a lavender cider and found it resembled mead more than the ciders I was used to! Will remain my go-to bar in the Plateau.

Yelp
Such a great spot to meet a date or friend. The interior has a warm and inviting atmosphere that reminds me of a speakeasy in some ways, as they have an eclectic mixture of couches and tables in warm tones. Thr place was packed in a good way, I didn't feel crowded at all. There are also numerous beautiful green plants along every corner of the restaurant. I came here with a friend and we really enjoyed the kombucha, oysters which were fresh and briny, olives, croquettes, focaccia, and Caesar salad. Everything was well made. Our waiter was lovely and our water was always filled. Would definitely come back as the food, service, and ambiance were all excellent.

Yelp
This was our first trip to Montreal and Darling did not disappoint! We stopped in for brunch as a larger party and all of our meals were so delicious that we opted to return the next day! The french toast special was to die for, as were their berry smoothies. Great atmosphere, friendly people, efficient service, and a lot of fun! I highly recommend this cozy spot to anyone who enjoys great food and immaculate vibes.

Yelp
Overall: felt like I was transported to another dimension but this place is food and drinks and speakeasy vibes? The drink list is exceptional and the crowd is a mix of couples and friend groups all a pretty young age.
google avatar

Yelp
The highlight here is the decor. Cute, cozy, art deco. Very nice drink selection but very expensive in my opinion. The food is ok but portion are tiny. The service is quick and friendly.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this with hubby and it quickly became our new favorite haunt. The whimsical, vintage decor feels like you've been thrown back in time. Food great as well.

Yelp

Yelp
Last Monday me and my sister had a wonderful experience for lunch. It was the last day and rainy and we couldn't have picked a more amazing spot! So welcoming and made sure we were comfortable. The entire staff extremely friendly, especially Marco! He helped us pick the best drinks for what we were looking for, food was DELICIOUS & fast! I highly recommend this place and will be coming back every time we visit. Ask for Marco he was seriously amazing and even helped us learn our French we got books to learn (touristy, yes know but don't care ) but we did drink wine like the French while learning.

Yelp
Incredible vibes in this restaurant. The decor is so lovely and everyone working there is so friendly and welcoming. The food is solid as well. We ordered from the New Year's menu (https://www.instagram.com/p/C1VS6Bhrea-/?hl=en), which was a good amount of food for what was paid. The deviled egg (œuf mimosa) was the first time I've ever had a deviled egg better than my aunt's, and the rillettes de saumon were so good that I saved some of them so I could have them at the end of the meal before dessert. The Après-Ski Doux was a wonderful addition to the meal that made everything have just that much more of a holiday feel to it; the decor and the servers dressed with nice blouses and bowties helped as well. The server actually brought us a second drink, as the first one was made without the crème de menthe; I didn't even notice it was missing (the drink was good without it, but even better with it), and they offered to bring another without my mentioning anything. I'm already planning to make a return trip to this restaurant to check it out for dinner and the bar when I visit Montreal again.

Yelp
A local friend of mind recommended Darling to me, and it turned out to be a fantastic choice of venue! The ambiance is warm, sophisticated, and inviting - it's no wonder the place was jumpin' on a weeknight! Both the food and service were excellent - I was also very happy to find that they serve Jameson here, even though it's not on the menu :-)

Yelp
This review is solely on drinks and service. We stubble upon this unique bar on our walk back from thrifting at Mont-Royal Ave. We wanted a place to take a break and have a drink. Service was promptly, well informed and super friendly. We had a fun time discovering the quirkiness of this eccentric venue. They have a retro style, mix with 80s/90s nostalgic atmosphere. We tried their beers, ciders and mixed drinks and they all held up to the suggestions from our server. I was happy to see a local craft beer and cider in their menu and get a taste from Quebec's local brews. Overall I feel like this will be the perfect bar to come at night, enjoy a few simple appetizers and get carried away with a few drinks and good company. The energy and vibes of the place were giving a fun time! Loved taking pictures of their interior, just wished we could've stayed longer.

Yelp
An absolutely darling place ;) Walking down Saint Laurent Blvd (as you admire all the Mural street art) you will immediately be captured by this place's window appeal and charm. There are beautiful plants EVERYWHERE, so much so that I thought it was a plant shop initially! The ambiance at this place is so cool. Any direction you look, there are so many visually interesting things to look at from tiny skeleton figurines in terrariums, to vintage books, to tea cups, and as I mentioned already, all the lovely plants. I particularly loved that this appears to be an upscale place, but the customers are all pretty casual and many are working on their laptops. Upon walking in, I was immediately greeted by the friendliest host ever and then by an equally friendly waitress. She saw me eying the giant chocolate chip cookies they have on display and asked if I wanted one, and I immediately said "YES!", and to my surprise they were only $4!!! The food and drinks were top-notch as well, and fairly priced. Had an old fashion ($13) as well as the gnocchi. This is the perfect spot to either start or end your day on Saint Laurent Blvd!

Yelp
Casually strolling through Montreal on a Saturday and I stumble across A cute little event on St Laurent with classic cars, music and so much art! I then see this alley way with the most beautiful paintings/ street art that I have ever seen, and I love me some street art. Montreal is FILLED with it. All this walking got me pretty hungry. Being that I don't speak any French, it can be a little nerve wracking walking into a new place as an English speaker. Looking for a place to eat, I see these beautiful marquee lights twinkling in my eyes and it drew me in. It was so shiny and cute I had to go in. No idea what the cuisine is, I head in and I'm greeted in French by the hostess. I let her know I would need an English menu and would love to sit at their cute, circular bar. The aesthetic of this place has to be one of my favorites by far. You can see by the photos but the ambiance is perfect for a little group gathering, date night, or a nice dinner by yourself. It's almost like a dark, classic circus style and I am living for it! The menu had a lot of things I didn't really know what they were but I saw the words "Bi-Bim-Bap" and just knew I had to try it. I went to this place on September 13th, 2018 and to this day I am still looking for bi-bim-bap that even comes close. I even went to Korean barbecue the other night and I'm telling you, these French people know what they are doing! I would say the tasty drinks that the bartender made me may have played a part on the amazingness of my meal but I think it was just that dang good. If you're a traveler like me or just a local looking for a great place to eat, stop in here and you won't regret it!

Yelp
Cool place decorated in retro/vintage style! We sat on the sofa and ordered drinks (calvados and whiskey) on the rock with desserts (feuilleté and cheesecake)! Tasted good!

Ana C.

Yelp
This place is not friendly for solo eaters. Me and other people were asked twice to move to the couch or bar. I wish they would just let us eat in peace like if we were accompanied. No one in other tables was asked to move. Matcha was very strong for my taste. The breakfast sandwich is was okay but tasted very fast foody.

Curtis M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and really enjoyed the dessert we got. I recommend making a reservation as it is a popular spot. We went back for dessert and drinks after dinner the following night as well. Our waitress was helpful and attentive.
google avatar

Yelp
Such an amazing find! The ambiance was so fun! I loved the decor, all the pants and the fun vibe. We had cidre and beer, Eggs Benedict with chicken and salmon with ricotta and dill! The flavors were outstanding. Such a fun take on classic dishes! The service was top notch! This was such a gem near the mont royal metro stop!
google avatar

Yelp
Great place. But long wait time in line outside and extremely slow service. Mediocre drinks. You're really just going for the ambience.
google avatar

Jessica E.

Yelp
Amazing food! Maximalist ambiance! Superb service by Nicolas! He was amazing, so friendly, perfect timing, didn't even need to write down our orders he was so good at his job. Aside from the food and very cool decor we would come back just to have amazing service from Nicolas again.
google avatar

Matt A.

Yelp
We passed by @bar.darling for a quick drink and we were mesmerized by the vintage decor including marquee signage we absolutely loved and the 8-ply coasters (Yes, you read that right, they're like little pillows!) to top it all off with delicate attention to detail.   But it's not all impecable style. The few drinks we did have were orignal and exquisite. We will surely return on a day where its probably less busy
google avatar

Yelp
Cute and charming venue to grab a couple of drinks with friends or to study. There's wifi and the food is pretty good too. Totally would be a go-to spot for me if I was a local!

Yelp
Loved this place! Great ambiance, service and food is amazing. Lunch special exceeded my expectations! That toast de jour...whew! This place is darling.
google avatar

Joi B.

Yelp
Ohhhhhhhh, Darling, you live up to your name. We were passing by on the opposite side of the street and I took one glance at the wall of windows graced by plants and a warm lambency coming from within, and knew that we absolutely had to enter. That circular bar beckoned. The chairs are deceptively comfortable, despite the hard seats because the tops actually recline like a desk chair. Geniuses are clearly behind the concept and decor of Darling because there is charm at every turn, from the absinthe green wall paper and mischievous paintings, to the metal sculptures decorating the top shelf around the bar (loved the water tower!). The wine glasses have their simple logo spelled in script, evoking a fanciful past. The wine list is legit and I also admired the array of cocktails. I could easily see myself losing the better part of a day, whether that be with daytime espresso and my laptop or with wine during happy hour or night cap. I didn't see too many, if any, vegan options on the menu, but I love Darling so much, I'm wondering who really needs to eat anyway? I'm pretty sure I turn into some kind of mythical creature when I cross the threshold and eating becomes not at all vital to my existence here. Adore.

Yelp
Going out here with friends felt like nightlife done right. I was in Montreal for a week and after having spent a year in a small town where nightlife ends at midnight, it was refreshing change to be able to go on a bar crawl in a big city. I suppose we were trying to find a club to dance in because, again, nothing of the sort in our college town. This wasn't quite the club scene we wanted, but we still made the most of our time here by ordering a pitcher of sangria to split amongst ourselves. It was here and then that we discovered our love for sangria. It was interesting being part of the hustle and bustle of the place. The lighting is dim and moody, and it makes me feel like an artsy college student going out for drinks and reading poetry or great literature. It's not exactly what we were doing, but that's what the atmosphere felt like.
google avatar

Jonny M.

Yelp
Came here as a nightcap after having a few drinks at another bar in the area. My friend's always been curious about this place but never been so we stopped by for a drink. The outside terrasse was packed but inside had plenty of space. We grabbed a table near the front and proceeded to check out the cool surroundings. Definitely take a walk around before you leave. The decor is very eclectic and stimulates the senses. We wanted to try the ciders that they have on tap (there's 7) but two that we picked were out. Prices on the menu already include the taxes. - Cidrerie Milton Api-hop (#23) ($7.00) - this was the better of the two. The "driest" according to our waiter but it wasn't even. I'd get this. - Cidrerie Milton Rubinette (#24) ($7.00) - tastes like apple juice. Medium sweetness. Would like to come back during the day to see what it's like compared to at night. Cool, chill spot to have a few drinks.

Yelp
I've been coming to Darling for years, it's the best spot for studying and then drinks in the evening. The coffee is great and chocolate chip cookies are to die for. I gave the panna cotta a try today which was pretty underwhelming, wouldn't order it again.
google avatar

Yelp
Visited with 5 friends on a Sunday around 1h30 and we were seated right away. The menu is short but everything is amazing. I had the gravlax toast and side of potatoes (don't skip on those! ). We all had aperol Spritz as well. My friends chose the darling sandwich, which was very good too. Quick and friendly service. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Darling - is a super cool and happening joint. I only had the brunch - it was delicious but i feel like i this place has so much more to offer. From what i have seen - their coffee is great, the food delicious, and the service is super friendly (even if a bit slow at times.).
google avatar

Yelp
Darling is a cute café-bar not so far from the Mont-Royal metro station. I went there on a Thursday morning for a quick coffee and ended up staying one hour. There was a little bit of jazzy background music not too loud, not too soft, just perfect for a relaxing coffee time. As they have wifi, there were a few people working and the bar section was closed. The service was perfect, I ordered a Moccachino, a latte, a lime tart, a chocolate croissant and a brownie. Everything tasted very good especially their lime tart, I'm a fan! I will have to update my review very soon because I definitely want to try the bar section!

Julia H.

Yelp
My friend and I had 48 hours in Montreal, so we wanted to maximize our time in places that were great. Unfortunately Darling was not one of them. Although the food and drinks were decent, the bartender had to be one or the rudest people I've ever met. We were sitting at the bar aka right where she was stationed, and she rarely came over to us for more food, drinks, paying the bill, etc. it was not that busy either, she just seemed to be more focused on her friends drinking at the bar instead of actual customers. We were not the only patrons expressing frustration with her, the couple to our left got into a heated discussion with her, and the couple to our right had to complain x2 about the drink order being wrong. We tried to pay for 20 minutes, I flashed my card at her numerous times, but it wasn't till I asked another staff member to please bring us our bill that we were finally able to close out. All of the above would have been frustrating no matter what, but her rude and condescending demeanor and communication is what pushed me over the edge and to write a review on here. Will not got back, and will not recommend to any fellow travelers if that's the normal staff etiquette. A total bummer to have to waste 2.5 hours here due to the poor job or the bartender.

Yelp
I've been to this fantastic place several times and was there again last night! As usual, the place is vibrant and the decor is very unique which makes it even more enjoyable. I tend to usually go for drinks but would like to try to go for coffee or even a meal at some point. Their drink menu is quite extensive and if you like cider then you know where to go ;-) try their ciders and pear cider as well which is on the sweet side but great. Magalie our host was very patient and tried to accommodate our groups needs :-) Will definitely keep going back!!!
google avatar

Kathryn B.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this bar. Great atmosphere and decor! Such a cute spot to have a drink or an appetizer. We got the charcuterie plate and everything on it was amazing! Wonderful evening. Would definitely come back here.
google avatar

Cin C.

Yelp
Step inside and you are suddenly transported to a lush quirky New Orleans bar. Absolutely loved the decor, lights and quantities of plants they have in every corner of the space. I kept looking around and noticing little details and funny items tucked into the inconspicuous corners. It's a large space so there are plenty of tables, each with a unique view of the environment. They have my friend's favorite IPA on tap so we had to stop for a drink! We did cave and got an order of fries to share and they were gobbled up in no-time. Would love to come back for dinner and try out their menu!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
The café latte is great. I go there every week. The decor is OMG - why can't all places look like that?? It's lush, warm and comforting, there's always something to look at, a true antidote to the suffocating minimalism that has plagued Montreal in the last years. Any old fool can paint a room white, put three pieces of furniture in it, and call it minimalist, but well-executed maximalism, now THAT takes taste and vision to pull off.
google avatar

Ellie B.

Yelp
The best thing about Darling is the ambience and aesthetic decorations. If you come here you will feel like you're in a 80's movie with a trendy millennial vibe. They have so many plants and little quirky items that fill up the place. The drinks are excellent too. We had white and stormy, which is their special, White Russian, Bloody Mary and the sangria pitcher. White and stormy is probably not a universally popular drink because it's heavily gingery but I enjoyed it. They did a great job on the other cocktails too so I would say it's a good place to try new drinks! We also had the edamame platter, which is a dip plate that comes with edamame sesame dip. It was something new and delicious! The downside, however, is the price. It's definitely on the upscale and you will be spending more than you planned to.
google avatar

Louisa K.

Yelp
Very chilled, hip and beautiful. Think green plants, dark wood, soft leather, and brass elements. Hushed classical music rounds it all off. Darling invites you to feel comfortable, bring your book or laptop, sip a coffee, or maybe even a daytime whiskey. The atmosphere somewhat provokes it. The large front windows look onto Parc du Portugal. The leafy trees make up for the disrupting passing cars on busy Boulevard Saint-Laurent. By the entrance you will find a glass case with a small selection of sweet and savory pastries. If they offered freshly prepared food as well, Darling would probably be a five star establishment to me.
google avatar

Ran N.

Yelp
This place may seem sketchy from the outside, but its absolutely beautiful inside! I loved everything about it. The vibe, the decor, the service. It's definately a good place to come with friends, and gives you a reason to dress up. Don't really recommend it as a date night as the tables are pretty close together and you loose a bit of privacy. They have a lot of drink specials, I recommend the ciders, all of them were my favourite. The beers were really good too. I wish they had a food menu, apparently they only have appitizers during the night.
google avatar

Agnes W.

Yelp
This place is SO cool. You immediately become cool when you walk in because this place is so cool!! Coolness aside, this place has such a great vibe and a very unique decor. They do offer coffee and breakfast/brunch type food during the day. I went for drinks with my friends. Bar Darling is such a fun and trendy place to kick back and relax with your friends.

Yelp
One of the most beautiful restaurant-bar-café hybrids I've ever been to in my time in Montreal.  Though we visited later in the earlier (around 6:00 pm), it was already transformed into a loud and bustling area with lots of conversation going on around us. We sat in the couch area next to the window, which had great natural lighting even though it had been raining all day. The decorations are breathtaking - lots of brass, wood, and plants creates a perfect instagram worthy setting. It was a little stuffy inside, but I think that was mostly due to the number of people. The only con I can name is the faint smell of cigarette smoke that lingered in our area. The service was fast and friendly, and we were even given free extra bread for our foie gras! The coffee was nice, and prices were good. Will definitely be coming back!
google avatar

Jessica K.

Yelp
Cool eclectic cafe/bar around little Portugal. Great for photos if you appreciate an aesthetic environment and decent espresso choices. I haven't tried their drinks at tbut they seem to have a good selection. Food menu seemed to go downhill, there aren't many options unfortunately. I would skip the place if you're looking for a fulfilling meal... Service wasn't exceptionally friendly but wasn't awful either.
google avatar

Shahanaz B.

Yelp
What a darling spot! I went with three of my girlfriends, and I told the host we are four, and he says no, you are 4 beautiful girls. Compliments will take you to places. It is an adorable place. The service was friendly and helpful. I had a glass of white wine, which was perfect , with bruschetta. Omg, the taste of the bruschetta was delicious. Every bite of the bread, the spicy basil, the garlic, the tomato, the sun dried tomato, the olive oil and the garlic, on my tongue harmoniously. Perfect hangout place.

Yelp
Hands down my fav bar/cafe in Montreal. There's tons of seating and a patio in the summer. The crowd here is super chill and the staff are a friendly gang of locals. They have a great selection of beers on tap and a lot of local beers. During the today they open up the huge window/walls and turn the space into a cafe. The wifi is solid and the food/drinks are great. Definitely check this place out if you are looking for a nice place to hang out with friends, work or chill. The interior is also super cool. They have massive lettering on one part of the ceiling and plants/kitschy decor.
