Quebec Bars Serving Food Can No Longer Stay Open Past Midnight | Eater Montreal

"In Montreal’s Gay Village, I note that bar Le Date had added a kitchen and applied for a MAPAQ food permit to extend its operating hours past midnight to try to stay afloat during the pandemic; after Quebec banned bars from selling food past midnight and introduced new karaoke restrictions, Le Date laid off about 15 people in response to the measure." - Valerie Silva

One of Quebec’s Favourite Pastimes Is Now Banned, Indefinitely | Eater Montreal

"At a Gay Village karaoke spot called Le Date in Montreal, owner Danny Jobin emphasizes how popular karaoke is there — with lineups every single day and people even turned away on Mondays — and says he has been 'doing the best I can' by training staff, sanitizing, disinfecting microphones after every use, and installing plexiglass dividers on stage, but he is very sad that authorities have effectively ended karaoke, lamenting that 'they've decided karaoke is criminal' and blaming those who 'just didn't care about COVID.'" - Valerie Silva

Google
This is a great karaoke bar. The singers were terrific. Very fun crowd. I didn't see any food offerings.

Google
Karoake there is pretty cool. However the lines are absurd. Took 1h30 for each song. They could have a system where you could check how many songs are still before you. Like Karaoke Mugen

If you've never gone to a karaoke bar, here's the following information you need to know: 1. No reservations are needed unless you're a group of 4 people and more. 2. The only "fee" to partake in the karaoke is to buy a drink. Expect to pay 9$ for a beer 3. You have to look at the song catalogue they have online and search if your song is the system 4.Submit your song and then they'll call you when it's your turn. If there is a lot of people, expect like a 30-45 minute wait. 5. The stage is all yours, so all you have left is to sing your heart out and enjoy your time there! Loved the place. It's small, but everyone there is very chill. I'll have to come again. The staff is super nice and very welcoming 🙏 The staff there is also super talented! They are all amazing singers! You won't be disappointed! If your server is Fred, you'll be treated like a king. I really recommend this place.

Honestly awful! Me and my friend came here and we aren’t Canadian and so we were pressured for tips and given a lecture about how not tipping was rude. I totally understand this, however, we had been tipping properly for every single drink we had (At least 18% per drink.) he was clearly preying on the fact we were not Canadian and had already had a few drinks to take advantage of getting more tips, but the way he did it was so rude and off putting. Avoid at all costs (unless you want to have your night ruined!)

Google
Love this place. Always a good time, super friendly and welcoming. They have pretty much every song ever made and the crowd is usually enthusiastic or just a good vibe hanging around. J’adore le Date! Meilleur karaoke en ville

Google
I visited this place a week ango and unfortunately had a very negative experience. The bartender was rude and openly demanded tips. When I tried to leave my own amount, he grabbed the terminal out of my hands and said that the minimum tip had to be 15% of the bill. After that, I completely lost the desire to leave any tip at all. When I refused, he continued to demand money and even told me to leave the venue and never come back. My question is: if the staff treats guests this way, will people really want to come here to relax and have a good time? This kind of attitude directly damages the reputation of the place, because guests come here for the atmosphere, not for rudeness and forced tipping.

Google
We went to Le Date on Saturday and had one of the worst experiences. We were stuck in line for over 15 minutes, even though people were constantly leaving the bar. When we asked the security guard why we weren’t being let in, he was extremely rude and simply said the bar was full. Right after, a group of his friends arrived and he let them in immediately. Throughout those 15 minutes, the only people allowed inside were those who seemed to personally know the staff or security. When my friend questioned this unfair treatment, the guard was rude to her as well. This isn’t just bad service. It’s unprofessional, discriminatory, and pathetic. A bar that claims to be welcoming but operates like a private clubhouse for friends of the staff has no business pretending to be part of Montreal’s nightlife. If you’re not part of their inner circle, don’t waste your time standing in line you will be humiliated and treated like you don’t matter. Shameful behavior. Montreal has far better bars than this. This place will never see me again.

Google
Great vibe, great drinks, and great people! Would definitely love to come back for karaoke. Fun lighting, nice stage, and clean toilets in basement (gender neutral). They have delicious NA drinks! Highly recommend!

Yelp
We were looking for an lgbt ‍ +qrtwxyz friendly place for us to go dancing, we couldn't find anything besides what looked like sleezy strip clubs, but then we saw this karaoke place that looked worth walking in to, so we decided to give it a shot. Not sure why so many people said the service is rude here. We felt the opposite: everyone was nice to us, we had our water refilled like a million times and they came to check on us while we were there quite a few times. I also read reviews that the DJ doesn't play their songs. Well it was my first time and the DJ played 2 out of my 4 songs in just the hour and a half that we were there. And unlike the United States, they don't ask for tips just to play songs over here; there was no tip jar, so there's no preference to anyone in particular. One thing I do have to say about the music presence is, they try to play things that have similar vibes back to back, then start mixing it up, so he may not play your song in the order that it came in, and if it's depressing or just doesn't fit the vibe you may not hear it at all, so request multiple songs if you're not sure that it will be played. They also have a playlist of songs they are willing to play which you could choose from. I requested 4 songs without looking at their playlist, from that, I got 2 songs played in just under 2 hours. Pro tip: the drinks are very sweet here. I suggest getting shots or asking for everything on the side so you can mix it.

Yelp
They charged us 40$ for 2 doubles and then when we paid he said "its a mandatory tip, 30% is good for two of you" Terrible.

Yelp
When me and my friends got here there was no parking . So we drove around for a bit until we found a decent parking spot. As soon as we arrive to Le Date karaoke bar, everything from the outside street was beautifully decorated. We walked into the bar and saw many friendly faces. It started bumping at around 2300. We all had a lot of fun drinking and watching ppl sing. I also got up on stage twice to sing. It was an awesome experience. We would return here if we lived here. We are all from out of town so it was a nice experience. 4/5 due to the DJ and bar server serving ppl that they know more whole-heartedly. But I understand.

Valérie H.

Yelp
They accused me of vomiting and refused me drinks when that way absolutely not the case. They treated us like no ones and refused to serve us for the night. The server was wearing a black shirt and jeans. Also they scammed us with the price of the drinks, charging us for plenty things THAT WE DID NOT DRINK. 1) watch out because going out to the bathroom makes you "a client that vomited" and classifies you got no more drinks for the night. 2) look out for the receipt, some things in there are not what you drank; they just want money and they charge you for things you were not aware of. I can't put less reviews but I would give 0/5 for sure.

Yelp
Had a horrible experience, staff was very rude and the owner was even worse. After reading other reviews on google it seems like the owner likes to mock people for having a bad time at the bar... Won't be going again, I suggest you don't either.

Yelp
Updating this review from years ago because we had sooooo much fun here the other day. Everyone who sang was amazing, the crowd was so supportive when I went up there, the pitch issues from my old review seem to be fixed. Best of all, the staff were rad. The waitress found us a spot even though it was kindof in her way and took care of us all night. The KJ did a great job of keeping all different groups there singing, and he was an incredible singer himself. Awesome time in the Village, can't wait to go back.

Yelp
This is a pretty bad karaoke bar. The server first came, rudely asked what we wanted, and when we asked for a couple minutes to think, he said we need to choose now or leave (we should have left). Then, he brought our drink and forced us all to tip by rudely saying "tip isnt included. you have to tip." One of my friends didnt hear this and the guy literally grabbed his arm and took the money out of it. Then we wanted to sing a song, but the dj never called our names and we left very disappointedly.

Yelp
Wow- such a great little place! Open doors, a nice little patio, and cool/air conditioned inside. A nice spot for a beer on a warm night! If you have some cash, they have some lottery machines to set the mood. Modern club style music at a level where you can still have a conversation. I think we'll be here a few times on our extended Montreal stay :)

Yelp
Ok my first experience was good here. We had a nice server who was good to us but the last time we went back the server was so rude. He brought us our drinks then told us we had to pay immediately. While me friend on my right was paying for her drink with debit, my friend on my left got out $8 to pay for his $7 drink. The money was in front of me and my drink was $8 so he directly started lecturing me on how the tip is not included here in Quebec and how it's so inappropriate not to tip. I tip a server who earns their money through giving good service, come to my table after being a dick and straight up tell us to give you money? Yikes. Won't be returning

Yelp
I'm not one for karaoke but somehow found myself at this fantastic place on New Year's Eve. After a night of unwelcoming bars and high cover charges in the gay village, this was exactly what my boyfriend and I were looking for. Friendly bartenders, strong drinks and a welcoming clientele. Give it a few songs. And a few shots.

Yelp
This place is horrible. It's almost 100% bachelor and bachelorette parties. We came on a Saturday and waited over an hour with none of our songs getting picked. They had a lot of people that obviously worked there singing songs.

Yelp
So, I'd like to preface this review by saying that this is a Karaoke bar and I ABSOLUTELY HATE doing Karaoke...I do, however, enjoy watching my friends sing their little hearts out in front of a bar full of complete strangers. This bar has been around forever, and has been attracting all kinds for just as long. It's in the village, which means the clientele is predominantly of the LGBT persuasion. But, as most bars in the village are, this one is welcoming to everyone, including the occasional bachelorette party. Everyone in this bar (at least on weekends) is there to drink, laugh, have fun, and maybe sing a little, so in general the vibe is really happy. My partner convinced me to take a star away for the drinks...while they are reasonably priced, I was reminded that they were a bit small...our waitress, however, kept them coming with a smile and sometimes a little singalong Where it loses the two stars is for decor...it's very dated, some might say a little grungy. It makes it dark and, if not filled with drunken, screaming bachelorettes, can feel a little seedy. I would recommend this place on a Friday or Saturday, if you want a full audience for your Karaoke-ing.

Yelp
I used to really like this place. The staff is polite and cool, the prices are pretty okay and the karaoké selection is good and usually up to date. The problem is with the karaoké itself. Everytime i go there, i'm there about 5 hours and can only sing twice. While other people (presumably friends of the karaoké dj) sing to an average of 5 to 8 times. It takes about 1.5 hour before you can sing. The rotating staff of karaoké djs seem to pretty much only let people they know or their friends sing. If you feel like karaoké tonight, I'd skip this one.

Bao Khang N.

Yelp
I think this is a really nice bar. Good music, fast service, everything is good. The karaoke usually starts at 10:30 PM so you should come here around 11 PM. It would be better if the bar has food/ snack option and wifi. You can never find any bar that has an excellent atmosphere like this one in the gay village.

Yelp
If you go here - take close care of your belongings - had my winter jacket stolen by a -20 C night. And don't expect any help or sympathy from the staff who told me that it happens now and then.

Arlene V.

Yelp
Cool set up with red curtain and nice stage, table service was good. Like many reviewers mentioned, very difficult to get any stage time. However, noticed favored local attention with cash given to Host. Lots of good talent though and fun energy, but don't expect to sing if your not a regular.

Camilo G.

Yelp
Great place... prices are fair, ambiance is cool but the karaoke dj has sung 5-7 times and we havent sang our song yet, which we put in 2:30 hours ago...I'll just leave and let the dj sing the karaoke....

Yelp
Love love love this place. Awesome friendly bartenders. and great karaoke as a traveller. It's so nice to go somewhere where you feel welcome

Keenan S.

Yelp
The bartender stole money from me and refused to return my debit card saying he misplaced it and wouldn't check as he took shots with other patrons, the staff was all drunk and were physically and sexually aggressive. Will never return.
