A New Chef From Paris Leads a Total Menu Makeover at Georgetown’s Cafe Bonaparte | Eater DC

"Reopened yesterday after renovations, this 16-year-old Georgetown French bistro has been renamed Lutèce by Bonaparte and features a menu revamped by Martin Senoville, who insists he’s cooking as he would back home in Paris despite a daily language barrier after moving seven months ago. I learned the new menu drops the popular crepes and adds dishes such as chanterelles and fresh truffle in smoked potato cream and foie gras with raspberry vinegar labneh, takes cues from both the Parisian bistro and modern gastronomy where Senoville previously worked, and will change seasonally; the kitchen will bake its own bread, make its own jam, and offer a vegetarian French onion soup, with two-course lunches and three-course dinners at a flat rate. The 26-seat dining room was opened up to reveal exposed brick and planted touches for a cozier vibe, jazz now plays in the evenings, and there are six bar seats plus a new six-seat chef’s counter planned to carry a special menu and possible wine pairings. Co-owner Omar Popal framed the redesign as a move to a more Parisian, more “refined version” of Cafe Bonaparte, and the new name references Lutèce, the old city of Paris." - Adele Chapin

Google
Great place, the food was great. They have a beautiful bar. Really enjoyed.

Chadley K.

Google
I had the famous "croque-monsieur". Like many reviewers have said, this place is nice but not great. Good but not terrible. It's a form "okay" if you want a quick bite to eat.

Google
Great atmosphere on the patio with good music and had a delicious meal. I can vouch for the frog legs and Beef Bourgogne, as well as making one of the better old fashioneds I've had in Europe.

Google
I enjoyed two meals here while visiting Paris. The cocktails are generously sized, and the menu has a lot of good options. I like that the menu is focused, rather than having a billion options and doing nothing well. The first time I visited I had a St. Germain Spritz, a charcuterie and cheese plate, and the lime cheesecake. The charcuterie and cheese plate was huge and could have fed 3 people (I took a lot home), and it had a nice variety of quality meats and cheeses. And, the lime cheesecake is one of the best desserts I’ve had recently! It’s tart and creamy, like key lime pie but even better. The second time I had the Éléphant Rose spritz (yes, I like spritzes 🤣), and the rose liqueur was delicious and well balanced. I had a warmed goat cheese salad, which was simple, comforting, and delicious. I had crème brûlée for dessert and they browned it perfectly. I found both meals much better than the average brasserie. I really enjoyed the ambience—it’s a pretty spot with a classic look, and I like the little moon lamps they put out. The service was excellent. All of the servers are really friendly, and they speak English well. Occasionally it takes a little while to get service outside, but that happens everywhere in Paris. The first time I visited, I randomly mentioned that I had had an awful day, and the staff went out of their way to make sure I had a nice time there. I really appreciate their excellent hospitality.

Google
Thank you to everyone at Le Lutèce! You were so lovely to my mother and me. We were delighted to be remembered and welcomed back after only one visit. And we appreciated your genuine kindness and charm. The wine and food were delicious, the people watching fabulous, but the warmth of the staff will stay in our memories.

Google
We had breakfast at the Le Letèce restaurant this morning and found the atmosphere was very nice. The decor is modern and comfortable. The food is average, good but nothing special. The service is similar, adequate but not attentive nor friendly. With so many great restaurants in the area, we will choose another place next time.

Patty F.

Google
I got the eggplant but it wasn't that good. They were out of quite a few things. We were overcharged but straightened that out. The raw meat meal my boyfriend friend got was not too good.

Andrew S.

Google
Stopped in for a late-night meal at Le Lutèce and was pleasantly surprised. I had the Salade Niçoise, which was fresh, well-balanced, and very good. The service was friendly and efficient, and the patio seating made for a lovely spot to unwind and people-watch. Nothing too fancy—just a good, satisfying meal that hit the spot after a long day.

Armen Y.

Yelp
We were here for drink. Enjoyed the ambiance and the drinks. We ordered pina colada and spiritz, they were good. There was no ice in the pina colada we had ask for ice that took some time, but overall was great experience.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick bite and pick me up after checking into my hotel nearby in the place St. Michel neighborhood. Grabbed a table outside, which was perfect for relaxing and people-watching. My server was friendly and happy to let me practice my Français. I had a café allongé (long pull espresso) and the duck a l'orange. Both were tasty - I would be happy to come back.

Yelp
Came here on a random week day as we were walking around the museums and the churches. I've never been here before north of this side of town. We were quickly seated and luckily they have an indoor and outdoor area. The outdoor areas nicely heat it as well. Menu is pretty straightforward. Classic and traditional French dishes. Service was pretty quick as well. Prices are very fair considering the great location and the portions are also very decent. Services pretty good but they seem a little short staffed. There seem to be a good mix of tourist as well as actual French locals. I will definitely come back and try out more items on the menu.
google avatar

Ava K.

Yelp
While in the area, we stopped in for lunch. We ordered the St Marcellin roti, soupe a l'oignon, lutece burger, and a bottle of wine. Everything was good. Service was ok. We sat by the window and people watched as we ate. Prices were decent, especially since it's in a high traffic tourist area.

Denise C.

Yelp
I stopped by for a drink and an appetizer after having dinner nearby. I wish I had dinner here! The best Aperol Spritz I ever had and a selection of fresh meat and cheese from the charcuterie board. The waitress was full of energy and charm and really made me feel welcome by speaking English! I will Come back for a full meal.
google avatar

Cynthia B.

Yelp
We stopped here for a hot breakfast, and had an excellent omelette super mixte; with coffees and croissant. Everything was quite good, and service was just fine.

Jin H.

Yelp
This place is ok. I don't know real French food so I'm not a good judge. But it's edible and price is even cheaper than Southern California. Service is good. But it took a long time for my food to come out.

Yelp
We had just finished a night river cruise and wanted to grab a bite somewhere before getting on the metro to go back to our hotel, we looked at a few places but they looked too "touristy". I won't lie this place is "touristy" as well but not in a bad way, in a way that makes sure tourists are comfortable but also gives you a taste of French culture, there is plenty of seating on the main level and on the bottom level, there is outside seating also. The staff was very nice and efficient. We had some good wine for a good price, we both ordered the French onion soup which was great! My wife said "I can never order this again in the US!" For entee I had the chicken with mashed potatoes served with a cream sauce with pesto around the edges, my wife had the duck leg confit with potatoes and salad, we enjoyed all our food here and would come back!

Sara S.

Yelp
BEWARE - Tip Scam! Went for dinner with my family and the waiter was a hustler. Tipping is not required in Paris, but the waiter pressured us until we added another 10%. The wine was corked and the meals were mediocre! Look out for the waiter with very short black hair, he's a scammer! Go down the street a couple more blocks into the Latin quarter for a better ambiance, prices and food. Shame on you Le Lutece.

Yelp
This was my first pit stop for food during an excursion in Paris. If the rest of the week goes as good as this, it will be enjoyable indeed! My libation was chaffouina which has some Jack Daniels and St Germain. While it was a small drink, it was delightful. My auvergnate salad was pretty good. Definitely different than salads I am used to, with 2 slices of cheese, slices of meet, fried potatoes and allegedly a fried egg. I say allegedly because the egg white was fried but not the yolk. While I typically dislike runny eggs I ate it. Why? Because when in Rome...I mean France... I finished it off with a delicious strawberry cream cake. It was fantastic! The service was good. A bit slow but still good. I may just make a return visit before I depart.
google avatar

Cory B.

Yelp
The food was edible, but not good. The service was slow (even by European standards). The only thing the kids liked was the ice cream they got at the end. My "special" was lacking taste and flavor. My wife's cheese plate was lacking any sort of quality cheese. Basically, I wouldn't recommend anyone go here until it closes and is replaced by a Starbucks or a McDonald's.

Myles C.

Yelp
Had dinner here the other night because it was across the street from our hotel. The food was great. And so was dessert. Our waiter, Matthias, was super friendly.
google avatar

Carl M.

Yelp
Latte was perfect, no sweetener needed. Charcuterie board is enough for 2 easily. We got the mixed with Lots of good cheese and meats. We over ordered with 4 of us. We each only ordered a single meal. Americans beware the full flavor food will fill you up and it's wonderful. Our waiter was very nice. I don't know why others were offended? Maybe they were the rude Americans people talk about if you say Bonjour and smile they are really friendly lol
google avatar

Margie L.

Yelp
Wonderful chestnut crepe and glass of wine sitting outside and watching the Parisian world go by.

Carol R.

Yelp
Crowded tourist restaurant, but the food was excellent. Croque monsieur was creamy with a fresh salad on the side. My sister-in-law had a burger that was beyond great! A bit on the pricey side, but expected in a touristy area.

Maria D.

Yelp
We came to eat at Le Lutece two times during our visit to Paris. The food was wonderful and the service was excellent. Both times our waiter was Matthias. We was an excellent waiter and very polite. He made our experience one of the highlights of our trip for which we are very grateful.

Yelp
Great find - close to Notre Dame, good place for outdoor people watching, and best of all the food is really good. The beef bourguignon was fantastic, and my kids had burgers which looked really good. My wife enjoyed her shrimp and salmon tartar. Service was excellent. They have free WiFi too.

Yelp
This spot is located in Saint Michel-Notre Dame at line 4 of the Metro. My girlfriend frequently comes here so I was rather curious. We wanted to sit outside but it started to rain so we quickly scooted inside. Service was on the slow side at the beginning but there was alot of people, so it was expected. We both opted to switch things up and order different items. I ordered the steak tartare w/ fries, a salad, plus a beer. She ordered the veggie burger with the same sides. My beer came pretty quick after ordering. If you enjoy light crisp cold beer from the tap as I do, I highly recommend 1664 blanc. This is usually a mediocre beer that you can find for 1€ in a can but a completely different experience on tap. Sadly, my dish was pretty disappointing. It seemed like it was just slathered up in mayo and missing the other essential ingredients necessary for a great tartare. What I thought at first were truffle bits were actually more like petrified potato chips under your couch. I had to add extra salt and tabasco to flavor it up a bit. The fries were fait-maison or home made so that was a plus. My gf said her falafel patty was really soggy and could've been crispier. I'd really wish to think this time was just an anomaly. She said the food is usually pretty good and just experimented this time around. They had a special that included a starter, main course, and dessert for 20€ which I regret not trying. I definitely want to come back and see what that's about. Something else that happened that the restaurant nor myself can control was a rude customer - who happened to be American lol. My fellow Americans, if you come here please try to learn a little bit of French? Hello and thank you go a long ways here. Also, if you're going to complain about prices, maybe you shouldn't be traveling to Europe. Have you ever been to a supermarket here or know what TVA is? After your trip, I hope you have a better understanding of how lucky you are to live in the USA. Bon Appétit!

Yelp
This restaurant had everything to offer. The music, service, and the quality of the food was wonderful. I was able to enjoy desert which was a lemon meringue slice which had a sour and sweet taste.

Rick B.

Yelp
We stopped for a quick snack before heading out of Paris for the day. We thought it would be a great location next to the Seine while we relaxed for a few minutes. That is until our waiter (male server with a man bun) chastised us for not ordering at least 4 items (1 per person). As he was placing our drinks and snacks on the table I thought I would help by placing the napkins next to each person's plate. He yelled at me to not touched the napkins and moved them back to the middle of the table. We enjoyed our coffee and the kids enjoyed their ice cream. After paying the bill my son wanted to help by handing the server his empty glass. The server took the glass and instead of placing it on his tray slammed it back on the table and said don't touch! My wife was raised in Paris and never encountered such a rude server.
google avatar

Jeff L.

Yelp
The staff here is friendly, although a little inattentive, but nothing worse than most Parisian brasseries. Standard French fare done well, with generous portions of delicious mussels, properly done croque's and very good crepes that make a great finish to a solid meal. Outside heaters provide a great usable space to eat while people watching along a busy Parisian sidewalk in fall and cooler weather.

Lucas B.

Yelp
We enjoyed the meals we had here, and the wine they served at happy hour was good, too (and a steal at $5 for a huge glass).

Elizabeth S.

Yelp
Very cute cafe near Norte Dame and Saint Michel. Great for a quick coffee break and people watching as most seating is outside. We ordered iced coffee, both were slightly sweetened, which isn't our preference, but still pretty good and refreshing on a hot summers day. The mugs were pretty cool too.
google avatar

Yui C.

Yelp
Happened to walk by and went in bc we were starving. The food, in short, was mediocre and not worth our money. By the time our food arrived I noticed how everyone was just having coffee or drinks there. Another table of American tourists had burgers and they seemed to enjoy their food. I was a bit annoyed how our server could not cancel one order of the onion soup, after less than 2 minutes of ordering.
google avatar

George K.

Yelp
One star = good location. That's it. The food was sub par (I had the filet. It was tasteless. Family had mussels, caprese salad - also lacking flavour), and the service was terrible. No smiles, attitude (grunted when I asked for ketchup for the fries) and took forever to get the bill to us. Guess they figured location was enough. Skip this place!
google avatar

Jaime R.

Yelp
The place looks great. We had breakfast outside. The service was slow and poor. They didn't bring the coffee we asked for. The breakfast menu included juice which turned out to be box juice. Too expensive for that. The croissant was great, the breakfast and the omelette were good, the coffee and chocolate were ok. All in all I wouldn't recommend having breakfast here.
google avatar

Captain A.

Yelp
Perhaps the best food I had in my two-week Paris visit. Lamb shank was not the biggest, but excellently cooked. Great location, extremely nice service.

Wais W.

Yelp
The restaurant was just a short walk away from Notre Dame. First recommendation I would like to make is the grilled salmon which was cooked to perfection. We also ordered fries and the salad de Berger which was very yummy. The picture speaks for itself. Enjoy.
google avatar

Tim B.

Yelp
We loved this place. Went there for dinner and then came back for lunch later in the week. Food is delicious. Restaurants in Paris do not over staff so you have to be patient, meals are going to take awhile and it may take awhile to get everything, but the staff was incredibly friendly. The mussels with frites were our favorite item and for dessert the Colonel's cup which is lemon sorbet with vodka is a great way to end a meal.

Dan O.

Yelp
Nicely located but was greeted by an extremely rude and quite possibly racist waiter named Sabastian. I have enjoyed my trip to Paris until this douche bag ruined my experience partially. I felt very welcomed in this beautiful city thus far so I hope this dirt bag is the only one of his kind. Context, my wife and I decided to just get drinks in an apparently food only area. Sabastian didn't tell us otherwise and just rudely cleared the table and left without saying anything. He dropped off the drinks and left as if nothing happened and when I asked if there was a problem, in a very smirk way, said no problem and gave a dirty look and left. Don't be likr that, A-hole, and ruin this town...
google avatar

Josh V.

Yelp
We think the person working at our hotel sent us here for breakfast. We're not sure since she was kind of hard to understand. I mean, she was speaking English but it was heavily accented. However, her English could talk circles around my French....and I'm off topic. We came here for breakfast on a weekday morning. They didn't have a lot of options. You could get pastries, or a Le petit déjeuner anglaise (English Breakfast--which included eggs) or Le petit déjeuner francaise (French breakfast, which was a croissant and part of a baguette with butter & jam) both of which included coffee and juice. For some reason they couldn't scramble the eggs with the English Breakfast...fried eggs only. Odd. But the French Breakfast was pretty good, if a tad pricey. Service was average for Paris. There was a mistake on the check, which I had to explain in my rather poor French, as the waiter didn't speak much English (or else chose not to, one can never tell) but it was corrected right away.
google avatar

Marcelino A.

Yelp
This place is pretty bad. The coffee tastes burnt and the service is awful. The ambiance is good though because it is great for people watching. Also, wifi is decent. There are so many places around. I recommend trying them.
google avatar

Brent W.

Yelp
I'll start off by saying that we did not have food here, only drinks. It is is a nice location behind the St. Michel fountain, with a patio where you can watch the traffic of the nearby latin quarter. Drinks were good and fairly priced, and it was a nice place to sit for a little bit. It was a bit chilly that night but the outdoor patio had radiant heaters which was nice. Perhaps the reason I give this place 5 stars is because I left my bag under the chair when we left and didn't realize it for about 20 minutes. When I went back to look for it, it was gone, but only because our waiter had tucked it behind the bar awaiting my return. It's hard to beat that kind of service (and luck). So, even if for that reason only I would recommend trying this place.
google avatar

Suzie H.

Yelp
I would bet money that an American owns this restaurant. We stopped in here on our walk from the Pantheon to Sainte-Chapelle. We had planned to find a Vietnamese restaurant, but were so hungry we couldn't wait. We happened to be standing in front of Le Lutece, so decided to check out the menu (obviously NOT related to Lutece in NYC!) and it appealed, so we had a 3pm comida, as they say in Mexico. We were the only ones there for a while and the service was good, as was the food. He had a veal dish with mashed potatoes, which looked to me like Salisbury steak and white fluffy spuds from a box. But he said it was good, so what do I know? I stopped eating veal 30 years ago. I ordered the lunch special, salad and Bolognese lasagne (reasonably priced at 11.50€ - yes, we've learned in a week that that is a good price for a lunch dish. I have yet to try one of the $18 - $23 (USD) hamburgers we keep seeing on menus!), both of which were delicious and HUGE. I could only eat half the lasagne and the waiter seemed puzzled that I wanted a to-go box. Maybe he was thinking "I thought all Americans like to eat a lot." But he was kind enough to wrap it carefully in heavy foil for me. My husband ordered an Armangac and I had the Tarte Tatin with Chantilly cream. I have a recipe for this pie baked upside down in an iron skillet from a French chef and used to make it for my kids. THIS dish, while very tasty, was not the real thing. The apples tasted great, but the paper-thin crust was soggy, and very clearly not baked the proper way. But the worst part.... the Chantilly cream was just plain air-whipped cream. I asked our water about it and he just shrugged and nodded that it is Chantilly. That really pissed me off - was he flat out lying to me or does he really not know the difference? And the menu offered a choice of whipped or Chantilly. I suspect they ran out of the latter in the kitchen and just squiggled whipped cream around the apples for the clueless American. So don't order dessert here and it you are served something that's not quite right, insist on speaking to the cook (no chef here, for sure). Come to think of it, I suspect my husband's veal really WAS plain ol' salisbury steak!

Katie L.

Yelp
Excellent find right by Notre Dame! Stopped here twice while visiting Paris! Once for wine and cheese and the for dinner! Food and service were outstanding both times.
google avatar

Mariela D.

Yelp
Came here on a Thursday afternoon (for breakfast - we were jetlagged and woke up late) and were told we could sit wherever we wanted. My husband ordered a breakfast sandwich with ham, topped with cheese and a fried egg - different but super tasty. I got the St. Michele salad which was huge - I thought European portions were small, but not here. The OJ was ridiculously priced (7.50 euros!) but it was fresh squeezed. But still, that's an outrageous price. Their creme brulee was really, really good, but not better than some of the brulee I've had in the states. Service was better here than in some of the other spots in Paris, and they don't make you feel bad for not knowing French. It's a good place for people-watching, although if you sit outside you'll be engulfed in a cloud of cigarette smoke, as is the case in all Paris cafes. Overall, I'd definitely recommend them based on the quality of the food and service, but they lose a star for their outrageous prices.
google avatar

Lois B.

Yelp
2 stars? Yes it's true. If you're hungry and tired, don't pass it by, but oh, my goodness, why stop for American fries in a city with the best "pommes frites" in the world?
google avatar

Cici S.

Yelp
Just popped in for a quick cafe, so can't comment on the food. The service was a little snooty, but I didn't mind. The interior is beautiful - an ode to the old world brasserie.

Sandra P.

Yelp
HORRIBLE SERVICE! Stay away especially if you're American, first place we stopped to eat upon arriving to Paris as it is across from our hotel. Service is horrible almost an hour before we received our appetizer, and server is rude and we were ignored throughout our whole meal, had to get another server to get us our drinks
google avatar

Susan O.

Yelp
We popped in here after passing quite a few spots. Had two great French sandwiches with salads that really hit the spot. Good thing I didn't check Yelp first! Wine and a full bar
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
The food here was okay. I got the tagliatelle aux deux saumons, at least one of which was not very fresh because it smelled and tasted REALLY fishy. Mom and sister got an omelette and croque monsieur, nothing special but still good. Decent prices compared to other places nearby, too. This place loses my good graces, though, because of the waiter. When he collected the bill, he said, "thank you, tip is not included." Technically not a lie, as "service compris" is a service charge and not a tip, but an incredibly disingenuous thing to say in a country where tipping isn't even the convention. I've been in France for five weeks, and Paris for one, and not once had a waiter said anything like that to me.
google avatar

Marie R.

Yelp
The worst pate' ever. Baguette was stale, waiters rude until collecting check - which is when my/our being American suited them, for our custom is to tip. Due to proximity to hotel and early opening, I tried it for a cafe au lait & croissant - and again received typically snobbish service. As a San Franciscan/New Yorker - was frankly shocked at this "typically Parisian" treatment on my 4th visit to this beautiful city.
google avatar

Mary S.

Yelp
Found the service efficient and the food quite good. I'd go there again and it was one of the best meals I had in Paris. I had the chicken with pomme fritte and the profiteroles ...

Scott G.

Yelp
Pass on this restaurant. We read the yelp review before going and saw that it had only 2 1/2-3 stars and ignored the review. We regretted that decision. The service is incredibly slow, you wait forever to be served, you wait forever to receive your order, you wait forever to get your bill. A couple of diners simply got up and left and told the staff to cancel their order because they could not wait any longer. The food is just adequate. The cheese and assorted meats plate was quite good. The chicken, way too salty. All in all, a mediocre dining experience. If you are in Paris, you are literally surrounded by great restaurants, some of the best in the world. Don't waste one of your "Paris dining experiences" on a mediocre place. Believe the stars, the collective wisdom of many diners does not lie...

Pam R.

Yelp
Stay AWAY!! This place was awful. We made the mistake of going here instead of the line of tourist traps nearby. It looks cute, but the music is some god awful something, and it is right by the buses and cars and sirens on st. michel. We ordered escargot - tasted like dirt; french onion soup; which had good cheese, but broth and bread were awful; lamb shank, umm, not sure it was lamb; and pasta with cheese that we had to add about a half-shaker of salt to to make edible. And the water was 7 euro a bottle. Hope it's the biggest mistake of our vacation.

Yelp
During my stay in Paris France, this was my favorite cafe! Now, finding a cafe in Paris is well like finding a mailbox in your neighborhood.... they are everywhere. We came to Le Lutece because I though hey this place looks nice and it was near my hotel. The waiter was really friendly and efficent. We came here more than once and he remembered me and my husband! On the third visit he knew what we wanted before we even ordered. :) Isn't that great?! Next time I am in Paris at the Latin Quarter, I will know which cafe to go into. :)
google avatar

Anup A.

Yelp
1664 beer with a 1970s Scarface Fontainebleau feel!
google avatar

Andy F.

Yelp
This became our local hangout in the Latin Quarter during our stay. We didn't ever eat here but enjoyed the Irish Coffees, cognac, and Bourdeaux. The staff is very friendly and forgiving of our lack of French. There is a heated smoking porch in front, which was fantastic for the chilly January evenings.

Susan R.

Yelp
Agree with others: location is fabulous, service was fine until we were totally ignored to receive bill. Would not return. A tourist trap cuz it is appealing from outside. So many other authentic places from which to choose.
