28 Classic Restaurants Every Montrealer Must Try - Eater Montreal

"Trends and chefs come and go but this country house restaurant in Laval from Richard Bastien (Leméac) is still at it. It’s tranquil, it’s relaxed, and the staff very much know what they’re doing. Open since 1980." - Ian Harrison, Joanna Fox, Tim Forster

Everything was wrong with many of our food. The food and service were very slow. I ordered Salad without onion for an allergy and surprise!! the salad has onion. In our table of 10, three of us ordered a filet mignon medium and all of them were over very well done, I returned my asking for steak medium done, they took forever to bring it again, everybody finished the food and my steak did not arrive, when it finally came it was a blue stake bleeding all over the plate. Of course I returned, and when they bring the bill they decided to charge for an filet mignon that I did not eat. everybody were disappointed how the restaurants now is serving the regular clients This is a restaurant that I will never go back and if you decide to visit the place PLEASE DONT ask for a steak they don’t have any idea how to prepare a good steak.

On Grand Prix weekend we looked outside Montreal to find a great restaurant and we were able to find a table through their app even within three hours of table time. The neighbourhood is picturesque and the house is tucked back from a pretty public square. Walking up we knew this was going to be a great experience and confirmed even more so as we walked in and greeted by the staff. The service was excellent and all the staff was very patient and kind to translate. Taking a picture with Google also quickly translated the menu. The service was timely and we never felt rushed. We choose the multi course menu with wine pairings. Expensive but worth the experience because we got to try four beautiful wines paired with all the courses. I lost count honestly but they were all made and presented to perfection. All the roast vegetables burst with flavour and the meats, shellfish, sauces and deserts were fabulous. If you want a culinary treat Le Mitoyen is a great choice!

We went to celebrate our marriage anniversary and it was the perfect choice. Starting with the service, the host told us a bit about the restaurant history (btw this place is an institution) he gave us amazing wines recommendations and he was very friendly and empathic all the time. The place is a restaurant inside a house, cozy and warm perfect to have a date. Food was incredible, they make an effort to buy local and high quality supplies which makes it more special. Everything was very tasty and delicious. Definitely I will come again.

Awesome cozy restaurant with warming atmosphere especially with its fireplace. Calm vibe so you can have a conversation. the staff is awesome, let you take your time and enjoy the night as the table is booked for the whole night: no pressure. the Risotto and Escalope de foie gras are great starters. For meat lovers, the main dish can be a wide selection, went with the: filet mignon de veau which is served with ravioli stuffed with foie gras and the Carre d'agneau that comes with a puree smashed with agneau inside it. love it and will definitely come back. Third time here, always great food. Tried the scallops, salmon tartar and again fois gras The Short rib is phenomenal

Google
Great food, great service and great night. The ambience is cozy and you really feel at home in this little house full of history. We had table near the fireplace and it definitely added to the experience. Everything was good, the fish cakes are a must try. They also have a stout beer ice cream. I mean what else do you want. PROS - The food ! - The desserts, especially the chocolate mousse and the chocolate squares; - The ambiance (including the fireplace); - The service and the staff. CONS - Not an impressive list of Whisky nor Cognac; - The tables in the smaller rooms feels impersonal.

Simply amazing. Situated in a lovely detached house in a quite neighborhood of Laval, Le Mitoyen serves unpretentious French classics with fresh and local ingredients. Every dish we ordered was excellent, but the foie gras, scallops and lambs were highlights of the nights. Service was very warm and attentive. Do allow time to dine here since everything was cooked fresh and it can get very busy.

We were a group of 8 that all opted for the 5 service "degustation" menu with wine pairing except one of the guests. The fact that if was a Tuesday likely contributed to the extra personalized service. The dishes rolled out with perfect interval. Very flavourful and nice assortment of local foods. Quaint terrace in front of the restaurant looking onto the square which had a public piano playing. Provided an extra unexpected ambience to the whole dining experience.

Yelp

Yelp
Found this gem out in Laval - they were actually fully booked but fit us in at 5:30pm (they open at 6pm). Super big shout out to our host - she was absolutely superb in introducing the menu and making us feel welcomed. There is parking to the right of the building - which was super convenient. I decided to go with the tasting menu (menu dégustation). It is a ton of food. Started with a light corn cream - flavor was delicate and smoky. The bouillabaisse was perfect - scallop beautifully done. The roasted quail was also very good. All the garnishes and sauces complement perfectly. The foie gras with the super crispy bread was excellent. Even the sherbet for palette cleansing was superb. The scallop main course in mushroom sauce was an art. I honestly was super full by the time I got to the raclette and the panna cotta but they were both amazing. Would have given them an extra star if I could!

Yelp
Rich, incredible cuts of meat and poultry. Wonderful desserts. Each table felt private and secluded even though it was in an upstairs room with many other diners. I don't usually go for quaint, but loved it here. My partner had deer tartar he loved. We had great rabbit and lamb. Excellent waiter who translated the entire menu word for word into English with great pantomime when needed. So down to earth and really cared about doing his job well. A few of the sauces tasted too extreme and one note - foie gras sauce was just too tart. And vegetables from the first course felt repetitive in the second course. We also ate at Lemeac, which appears to have the same owner. Lemeac was fine. But Le Mitoyan was much better. Well worth the schlep from Montreal on our most recent vacation.

Yelp
Wow. My boyfriend and I dined at Le Mitoyen last night, and it was some of the best food we've ever had. Executive chef Richard Bastien is a genius! The flavour combinations were out of this world, and the depth was incredible. Le Mitoyen is a converted house, built in 1870. There are several separate dining areas, a nice fireplace, artwork on the walls, candles at each table and soft music in the background. Service was excellent - each course was presented with a description of the ingredients. For Valentine's day weekend, a prix fixe 7 course menu was offered ($85/each or $140/each with wine pairings) with a choice of one of 4 mains. We started with a glass of champagne and the salmon cooked "sous vide" - basically vacuum sealed and cooked in an immersion circulator, I believe. Is was served on a rectangle of watermelon with citrus. The marinade was vodka-based. SO GOOD! The texture of the salmon was amazing, and nicely complimented the crispness of the watermelon. We then had a lobster tail with a mango sauce, microgreens, and tiny cucumber balls. There was a taste we couldn't quite place, and then realized it was vanilla (we think!). Whoa. Vanilla lobster? Who would have thought... ? Delicious! Next was a white polenta atop moist guinea foul with a rich guinea foul gravy. It was garnished with fried grains, rice and quinoa that turned into a 'rice krispy' texture. Again, awesome. We had the foie gras, served with a winter-root puree, carrots and a roast potato and spicy microgreens. I'm not a foie gras fan, but my boyfriend love it. The puree was delicious! (not included in the prix fixe menu - an extra $17). After that, we had a delicious bouillon, with finely diced carrots, and something with a bit of kick (couldn't quite place it...). It is served spoon-less, and meant to be sipped. For the main course, I had the pigeonneau (yup!! domestic pigeon! I'm living on the wild side :P) with wild mushroom risotto, and what I believe was a kind of liver mousse. The sauce was flavourful, rich, and delicious, and the risotto was earthy and creamy. The pigeonneau was delicious and tender. My boyfriend had the lamb, and it was amazing! So tender, and moist. We finished with coffee and desserts. We had an amazing profiterole filled with ricotta and tonka beans, and served with lemon curd. We also had a strawberry soup, with basil ice cream. Oh. My. Yum. Honestly. Holy Food!!!! At the end of our meal we noticed we had missed a course - a cheese based dish. Our waitress was apologetic, and since we didn't want it after our dessert, we were credited the cost of a glass of champagne. We were a pretty disappointed to have missed it, since it likely would have been amazing, like everything else. A bit of a miss given the calibre of the restaurant. But, c'est la vie. The service efficient and friendly, allowing enough distance for a romantic evening but always close enough should anything be needed. Highly recommend! It's definitely pricey, but you're looking for a splurge, this is the spot.

Yelp
By far the best restaurant in Laval. It's quaint, romantic and the service is always attentive. Very fine French dining experience, my husband and I are there at least once a year.
