Having lived in Paris for three years, I was a bit surprised that no one had ever recommended this restaurant to me. Senderens, located right off the Place de la Madeleine, is truly one of the most exquisite restaurants in all of Paris.
Though the French dine later in the evening, we made a reservation for 8:30, knowing that our meal would be a three hour affair. After our coupes de champagne, we studied the menu intently, reading each item out-loud (quietly) to one another. Lobster ravioli with truffle oil, milk-fed veal... We each ended up choosing something different, but all agreed to do a wine pairing with our starter and main plate- something I would highly recommend doing when dining en France.
Everything we ordered surpassed even our highest expectations. The preparations were exquisite and no detail went untouched. And just when we thought we were finished, voila, our cheese plate arrived. Dessert came shortly thereafter. When in Rome.. Three hours later, after our espressos had come and gone, our meal had officially come to an end. How the French can afford to eat like this (150+ euro per person), and maintain their slender physique are perhaps questions we will never have the answers to.
I would especially recommend Senderens as a place to celebrate a special occasion or event. From the exquisite decor of pastel coloured butterflies and dark carved wood moldings, to the elegant clientele in their finest French couture, the ambience was nothing short of remarkable. Coupled with the most charming of waitstaff in all of Paris, an extraordinarily comprehensive wine-list, and one of the most brilliant chefs in all of France, Senderens reminds you what a five star dining experience should look, sound, and taste like.
