Cafe Degas Debuts Neighboring French Sandwich Shop and Bakery | Eater New Orleans

"A long-awaited cafe and bakery from French bistro stalwart Cafe Degas opens Friday, September 6, in New Orleans’s Bayou St. John neighborhood called Le Ponce, at 3133 Ponce de Leon Street. The small shop—whose owners bought the building formerly home to Fair Grinds Coffeehouse in 2022—has held test runs during Jazz Fest 2024 and the neighborhood’s Bastille Day block party and joins nearby favorites just a few doors from 1000 Figs and Swirl wine bar. The succinct opening menu features French pastries including chouquettes (petits choux: light, airy puffs with custardy insides and crunchy pearl sugar), regular and chocolate croissants, a ham-and-brie tartine, jam baguette, and quiche Lorraine, plus a build-your-own breakfast sandwich with an option of house-smoked Comté, brie, or garlic-herb goat cheese paired with ham, bacon, or andouille and a fried or scrambled egg on croissant or baguette. For coffee, Le Ponce serves custom blends from Applied Arts coffee roasters (with a long list of drinks including cortado and flat white, iced or hot), with large coffee drinks priced between $4.50 and $5.75; it is open daily from 6:30 a.m. until 3 p.m." - Clair Lorell

I love Le Ponce. I treated myself to a quick breakfast on my birthday at the beginning of the month. I love their new expanded menu. I preferred the full English. It was delicious with the full strap bacon. Only criticism was there were no mushrooms and the tomato wasn’t cooked. Still delicious though, and the only place I know of in NOLA metro you can get a full English and proper hot cup of tea. Their pastries are consistently delicious and I’m so happy to see them expanding their breakfast menu. They’re a part of the Degas group and it’s so great to have a “Le Ponce” aka “spot” for gentle mornings in the neighborhood.

We were SO excited to try Le Ponce this weekend (it just opened) and it did not disappoint!! The breakfast sandwiches are fantastic. The quality of each ingredient makes a huge difference. We got one breakfast sandwich with bacon, scrambled eggs and goat cheese, and another jambon and brie (both to die for!!!) We’ve lived in this area for a few years and were so sad when the last coffee shop closed its doors. So happy to see this place revitalizing the neighborhood with great food and coffee, at a reasonable price point. I look forward to many more catch ups and breakfasts at Le Ponce :)

The owner is lovely, a rare gem; very friendly and just an all around beautiful soul. She hails straight from Paris, so she brings a taste of France to NOLA. The vibe is warm and inviting. My friend thoroughly enjoyed her cafe au lait and pastries. My coffee with ginger syrup was absolutely delectable! I will be back :)

Google
What a special little spot - gives old school local coffee shop vibes, and has such a cute little patio with plenty of plugs for working a bit. Everyone who works there is down to earth, friendly, efficient. Food is freshly baked/made (although I do wish there were one gluten free option available) and coffee is great. Get yourself some chantilly cream on top, what a TREAT! 🩵

Google
Meh. It's a basic coffee shop that the neighborhood supports. But it's nothing special. Even the coffee is average. We had 3 things to eat and none of them were very good. I'm a pastry chef and try not to be critical, but all their pastry products were soggy or undercooked. The eggs were overcooked. The effort just isn't there. There are several recent additions to the pastry/bagel market that are stellar, this one is not. I hope it will get better.

Google
Didn’t try any food but for coffee good prices and selection. The espresso is pretty good. Good location and family friendly. New locally owned business I hope people give a chance!

Rolling out of bed with no power after the latest hurricane, we were very pleased to see our new neighbors open for business with smiling faces! An iced coffee and a delicious jambon tartine made me momentarily forget about the fridge clean out awaiting me at home. Seems like the beginning of a great relationship! Seriously though, the service and price were as good as the food, happy to have Le Ponce in the neighborhood!

Google
Very cute inside. Got a latte and it was ok and a little pricey (75¢ extra for oat milk), I liked that it was in a shop mug. The tea my friend got was a little pricey but came with the experience (fancy tea bag and teapot)

Yelp
Not good. Overpriced. Got a croissant breakfast sandwich. Ham and cheese with creole mustard. Not much ham .... Croissant slightly burnt. $10.75 with tax.

Yelp
Le Ponce is a great spot for breakfast or lunch! The build-your-own sandwich is a great idea, and I LOVED the herb goat cheese. They have a small indoor space with a few tables and also a courtyard that you have to enter through the restaurant. I will say that you pay extra for dairy-free milk, but then they have free daily-free milk you can add to your coffee at a separate table...? So, I'd opt out of milk in your coffee to save the up charge

Yelp
We were excited to try this place, as there were many good reviews. The staff was not friendly upon arriving and almost rude throughout our transaction. In my personal opinion, the pastries appeared small and overpriced so we did not purchase any. My husband did get two coconut macaroons which he said were OK. Unfortunately our coffees were the biggest disappointment. We ordered a flat white and an iced latte. Both were terrible in taste and we tossed them shortly after purchasing. The inside is small- I think they may have a back patio.

Yelp
Le Ponce has their Galette des Rois (golden, flaky puff pastry) available for the Mardi Gras season. There's a choice between chocolate filled and almond filled. You can also get it by the slice or a whole cake. I got a slice of the almond warmed up and it was really delicious! Light and flaky! Almost delicate. It's not overly sweet, which was perfect. I took it to go and devoured it in the car. Crumbs everywhere, and each crumb was worth it!

Yelp
I just love their new summer menu. The English breakfast plate is perfect. And the chouquettes are the hit for a quick sweet bite.

Yelp
Once again the Bayou St John neighborhood has a lovely coffee shop that serves breakfast sandwiches and more! Le Ponce offers beautiful croissants, breakfast sandwiches, choquettes (slightly sweet French pastries that are delectable! The 'sweet' cousin of the gougère) Bright and clean, the smell welcomes you in the front door. I was greeted by the owner who was lovely, and ordered a fabulous breakfast sandwich with compte cheese, bacon and scrambled eggs on one of their picture perfect croissants. I sipped on a large cold brew iced coffee while my order was prepared. The inside space is light and bright and clean. Le Ponce offers its guests WiFi and plenty of power outlets throughout the indoor space. A small lovely outdoor area is also available with seating in the front side and back. Definitely a wonderful addition to the neighborhood

Yelp
Stopped by this little slice of heaven today for a quick cup of tea and breakfast sandwich ( which was yummy). As i walked in I was instantly greeted with the smell of fresh croissants and coffee. The staff was lovingly and highly enjoyed myself. The shop had a light and airy feeling and offered inside and outside seating. Highly recommend you stop by.

Yelp
Such a charming place for breakfast. Popped in this morning with my sister for an impromptu bite. I had recently saved this place on my Instagram from a post I saw. So happened today I was close enough in the city to try the breakfast sandwich for myself. The croissant was delicious. I didn't you had the option of choosing how your sandwich built. So it was fun trying to be creative with my sister and the assistance of the cashier. The staff was so pleasant and I enjoyed hearing them speak French to on another. Felt like I was being transported out of the city. We were also so pleasantly surprised that when you order tea it comes with a kettle and cup! It really brought the experience to another level. Will definitely be going back to try the other items on the menu.

Yelp
Pros: 1. Location: such a beautiful part of the city! 2. Music: most coffee shops and eating establishments play loud pop music, making it difficult to work, read, or have a conversation. The music they were playing actually fit the vibe. Cons: 1. Dude at the register/barista: no greeting, no smile, no "how are you?", no "thank you", no "bye," no "have a good day." He actually seemed annoyed that we walked in. And in the check-out process, there was no "no tip" option. You can bypass it, but they don't make it obvious. 2. Coffee: my coffee was so weak I couldn't finish it.

Yelp
Literally nothing bad to say about this place. Our breakfast sandwiches (both the baguette and croissant) were amazing. Our coffee was perfect. The staff were kind and helpful. It is such a cozy little spot for breakfast.

Yelp
I spent a couple days in New Orleans a couple of months ago and had breakfast at Le Ponce every morning. The breakfast sandwich on a baguette is the perfect breakfast. The coffee is great. I'm looking forward to coming back on my next trip.

Yelp
Went for breakfast, the food and coffee were delicious. Great location and atmosphere was casual.

Yelp
I'm really happy you're finally open but please, please, pleeeeaaase for the love of god extend your hours. For the last three decades the neighborhood has been lucky enough to have a cafe in that location open well into the evening, we're spoiled. Give us our late coffee option back!
