Le Relais de Franc Mayne (Saint-Émilion, Nouvelle Aquitaine) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Le Relais de Franc Mayne is housed in a 16th-century château. Not the sprawling estate style that’s so common in the Bordeaux countryside, but the other kind — a down-to-earth wine château, the sort of place where one of the main attractions is a series of old stone quarries where Cabernet Franc ages in oak barrels. Which isn’t to say that anyone is roughing it at this impeccably restored nine-room hotel: sophisticated lighting, decadent silks in bold hues, plasma televisions, a plush billiards room, and vintage wine tastings are just a few of the features putting a contemporary spin on this country-chic property." - Tablet Hotels

Le Relais de Franc Mayne | Best places to stay in Bordeaux |

"A short drive – or long walk – through the vines from the historic town of Saint-Emilion, this classic 16th-century manor house is part of the prestigious Chateau Franc Mayne wine estate. It’s a rural idyll with tons of character – there are pretty gardens and chic design rooms – including the woodsy Perchoir, perched up in an ancient cedar tree – and lovely views of the vines in every direction. Beautifully landscaped gardens and a chemical-free swimming pool, cleaned by algae, give it a back-to-nature feel, but there’s luxury in the free wine tastings and tour of the Chateau’s ancient quarry cellars, as well as delicious breakfasts in the elegant dining room or on the terrace. If you fancy a trip to Bordeaux city, it’s 40 minutes’ drive away. It is, however, a great base for exploring Bordeaux’s wine regions; the hotel hires out mountain bikes for leisurely explorations of picturesque Saint-Emilion’s vineyards. " - Dana Facaros

We loved our stay at Chateau Franc Mayne! The service was incredible and just a nice walk through the vineyards to Saint Emillion’s City Center. Breakfast everyday was incredible. We were given homemade breads, jam, eggs, fruit, freshly squeezed orange juice, yogurt and coffee. The pool was picturesque and a great way to relax on vacation! Everyone was helpful and welcoming. It was truly an amazing place to stay.

Both my wife and I really enjoyed our short stay at the Chateau and would recommend it to our friends and relations. Beautiful setting and the breakfasts were amazing. The wine tour and sampling is a must. We learnt new things about the fabulous wines of the region. Hopefully we get an opportunity to return one day very soon.

My husband, myself and 4 month old baby stayed 3 nights here and it was absolutely fantastic. The chateau is beautiful, and the surrounding area is so peaceful and quiet. Our room was very large, had a great bathroom and was extremely clean and tidy. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly, going above and beyond to ensure our stay was nice. Breakfast was lovely with homemade yogurt, cake and jam made by Rachel, one of the hosts, all while overlooking the vineyards. |The pool is so refreshing and was never busy as the chateau doesn’t sleep a lot of guests. Overall, a really lovely stay and we would definitely come back again.

We had an amazing stay at this highly recommended place in Saint-Émilion! The highlight was definitely their incredible wine tour. We learned all about their wine-making process and got to taste some of their wines, which I personally found exceptional. On top of that, the hotel staff were incredibly kind and welcoming, making our stay even more special. We can’t wait to come back!

We were visiting on our honeymoon and stayed in the beautiful treehouse suite. The property and estate are gorgeous! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because - upon arrival we found multiple dirty and used towels + a dirty used robe on the room, still damp from the guest before. We alerted the staff at the front desk on our way to town… when we returned a few hours later the dirty and used towels and robe were still in the room (gross!). It took staff 24 hours to simply come take away the used towels and robe. I did not appreciate that- this was a special honeymoon trip and the lack of effort to remove unsanitary linens from our suite was disappointing. That being said - the estate is beautiful. The breakfast is wonderful! We loved Veronique and Rachel- both so lovely and friendly. They made up for any negative. They are both excellent and helpful!!

Le relais Franc Mayne was fantastic from start to finish. We had a warm and friendly welcome from Cecile who showed us our rooms and the property. The relais is like a big home that you use as your own. They have a big massive lounge, garden, pool area to relax. Breakfast is served every morning in a big dining room and Cecile was there in the morning to do it. All fresh products. She was perfect. Smiley, happy and made us feel super relax and welcome. We can walk to st Emilion village from the relais it’s about 30’ it s a lovely walk from the back of the property. They do a free tour of the winery and the wine cellar if you say at the Relais. We did a tour with a lovely lady she was very passionate. They have easy parking. I will definitely come back with friends or family.

UPDATE: Since my initial review, we have not heard from the director about our compensatory magnum of wine! We stayed at Franc Mayne for our honeymoon (and noted this in our reservation). However, the "romantic tree house room overlooking the vineyards" was absolutely terrible, especially considering the astronomical price we paid and we felt like no effort was made to compensate us for our poor experience. We expected a secure room with a high quality finish and to be treated exceptionally well. However, this was not the case. THE ROOM Here are the list of issues with the room... - The door wouldn't lock, meaning anyone could get into our room. The only thing stopping people getting in was an easily scalable, waist high gate. - In addition, the safe didn't work, so we couldn't secure our valuables in our room. - The rain shower wouldn't work. - The complimentary WiFi was not accessible as it was too far from the main house. - The gate leading into the tree house was incredibly stiff to use. - The hand rails and stairs leading up to the room were rough, the stairs felt loose under foot and the whole tree house was in need of maintenance. - not the fault of the owner, but it was also swarming with wasps making the little balcony unusable (I suspect there was a nest at the bottom of the stairs). THE FACILITIES Generally, the facilities weren't without issue too, particularly the pool.. - the surface of the water in the swimming pool was full of dead bugs and needed cleaning - the perimeter of the pool was infested with ants and needed treating - the area surrounding the pool was all laid to grass meaning you had to get your feet dirty when walking around it (as well as avoid the wasps in the grass!) - we were told there would be pool towels in our room, but they were missing. When we were given them, they were old. THE SERVICE Rachel was pleasant with us and did things like book us taxis to and from the hotel. She also offered great service during breakfast (which was very nice). However, it was our honeymoon, our room was awful and we were only transferred to another room after having to stay a night in the tree house. It should have been the first thing that was offered to us. We were moved to the flat above the old post office which was very nice, but it seemed like no one had been in there for months. I also had to haul our 25kg case from the tree house down narrow steps up to the other over uneven ground without offer of any help. At the end of the stay, we were offered nothing for our trouble - no partial refund, not even complimentary wine. Just an apology. Frankly, it was not good enough.

We had an amazing stay. Rachel was an excellent host who made us feel special from the outset until we left. Her home marmalade Jam and her husbands lemon cake were special touches. The room, the Pool, the Wine Tour and especially the wine were all delightful. 10/10
