Montreal’s Best LGBTQ Bars and Hangouts | Eater Montreal

"Much of the Village has progressively de-gayed over recent years; this place has not, continuing the straddle the line between bar and club. Le Stud had a history of being notoriously unwelcoming to women; a minor media firestorm changed their ways, but nonetheless it’s still overwhelmingly populated by gay men." - Tim Forster

This place is not just for older guys but you see people of all ages / types. I had a great time going here. I went during Montreal Pride so there was a lot of different people. Dance floor was energetic and the DJ knows how to please a crowd. I also made a few new friends. And free cover! I recommend this place over Unity / other places in the area.

Google
It is really spacious, nicely organized bar. Especially if you compare it to the most popular bars in Europe (Madrid, Barcelona).

Joon Romero

Google
It was a great atmosphere! I loved it and mostly because of Jerome-the Bartender. He’s really nice and most of all cute and sexy! I miss him though. Too bad i was only there for a visit as i live in New Brunswick. Kisses for him 💋💋💋

Google
It's really one of the best places in Montreal for gay nightlife. Even just for nights with friends. It is more made for older men because you will usually see more older men but I have never had a bad time going there. The place is clean and there is a lot of different rooms in which you can do different things. There's a bar. There's a pool table There is everything you need to have a casual nice time with your friends 😁

Stud is one of the few relics of gay clubbing still standing today that hasn't gone under or been taken over by straights. For many gays, it's their version of Cheers, the bartenders and bouncers remember you, the usuals are always chatty. It's a men's bar but hags and lesbians are always loved and welcomed. Cheap drinks, a great place to meet new people. Saturday is always packed with the second floor being open. If you make it early enough that the kitchen is still open - amazing nachos and some of the best onion rings in the city!

Google
really nice gay bar, lots of bears and cheap drinks. Food is good too. great place to socialize or just dance if the night is right. favorite time to go for me is Saturdays, they open the upstairs room and play 80s mixes

Roberto Horta

Google
Good prices drinks. And 2 dance floors 3 or 4 bars. Lots of room. Really special place.

Google
Great gay bar in the Village, dance floor, karaoke nights, excellent DJ'S and friendly staff. The kitchen, " Le Resto " serves up great fast food, fabulous burgers and sandwiches but whatever you order do not get a Galvaude, it was the worst I ever had, first of all the sauce was thick almost like molasses, like it had been heated up for like 3-4 days and the chicken was very dry, plus they use a spicy chicken which should not be used in this plate as it destroyed the taste totally and it also took a half hour to get it, terribly SLOW service and they make you pay your order before you even see your plate and of course you leave your tip at that time, it's too bad but it was awful 😞 Le Resto , get your act together please ...

Yelp
Love this bar!! My gf and I recently stayed in a nearby studio on St. Catherine over the Fourth of July holiday (from USA) and this quickly became our pit stop both on the way out and on the way home from Jazz Fest and other nefarious Montreal meanderings. Cheap cheap cheap just how we like it! Divey but not dirty, in the literal sense at least. Did I mention all the gay porn? Don't have that at American gay bars! Service was great, and although I've seen some misogynistic reviews from Yelpers for this bar, we never felt unwelcome until we read them. We loved how down to earth everyone was, both staff and patrons. Great happy hour pricing. We loved washing down a shot of fireball with a bottle of Madjack (bc Canada!!) and my personal nightcap of choice is the minty stinger shooter. They're really into free snacks here. We went twice a day for 4 days and every time the bartender was all about offering us chips. No complaints there! Free WiFi and outdoor seating right on St Catherine, too! Word of caution - there's only one bathroom.

Yelp
When in Montreal we frequently stop at this Village bar for a few during the night and play the video slot machines. Be careful that the bartenders give you the right winnings back. Twice I've been short changed, last night by $100 - either they think I wouldn't notice, or made a mistake, but make sure you take a picture of your ticket before cashing it in. Bartender last night wanted to give me an extra $5 for his mistake, a gesture I didn't accept but think he was trying to just keep me quiet. I left there feeling like someone was trying to scam me. Understand that it isn't the fault of the establishment. Otherwise they have good 2-for-1 happy hour beer prices

Yelp

Yelp
The atmosphere was pretty good the drinks are tasty and bartenders sexy .But the only reason I give a 4 stars is the time I came here with a friend of mine there's was a really weird and creepy guy who approached us telling us weird stuff and since we both are too polite we was invading our own space and bubble which makes us uncomfortable

Yelp
I would have to say this was not one of the places on my must go to bar list based on the reviews. We went on Friday night and initially were super disappointed because it looked like a really divey bar and it took the bartender forever to actually acknowledge and serve us. We decided to walk around and noticed that there are 2 other bars in the establishment. There were pool tables and casino gambling machines to the right when you walked in. There was a slightly large dance floor that attracted lots of different kinds of people. The music was alright. There was also a very modern newish area that looked like a very classy bar but it was very much hidden in the back. I enjoyed that spot the most. They had plants and open ceilings. It was gorgeous. If anything I would go back to that section of this bar any time.

Yelp
Quite an interesting place...various little dens and warrens scattered about the place. Plenty of bars mean there are plenty of places to get a drink. The video room upstairs was playing some awesome jams from the 80's when I was there and the tiny dance floor was packed. There's a room that has some type of video gaming machines and those were all taken by serious looking dudes who haven't seen sunlight in years. I'm not sure what vibe this place is going for, but I found it kind of relaxed and enjoyable. We went in through the back alley into some door at the back and avoided the line outside. I'm not sure if we were supposed to do that or not but it felt kind of cool to do that.

Yelp
Went to the pride event. Bartenders are extremely slow. They would like straight inside your eyes and turn to take somebody else order. I was visiting from NYC and felt like they was serving quick only the returning customers. Don't recommend this place to any visitor!

Yelp
Hot bartenders, great service, awesome music, fun crown. Unpretentious! Best gay bar in town.

Yelp
A gay bar for the man's man, open every day of the week. Mostly a jeans and a leather crowd, this bar is a fun place to dance and meet the locals. Sunday is karaoke night. a entertaining event! A good place to meet and hook up. A very dark bar with good beer specials. Never a cover!
google avatar

Brad M.

Yelp
Grungy bar, filled with old drunks and sketchy people. Every time I've gone has never been a good time ( always end up leaving after one drink). Also had my wallet stolen here on my birthday, and when I called to check if anyone had found it nobody wanted to check... Montreal NEEDS better casual bars in the VILLAGE, like Woody's in Toronto for example..
google avatar

Ronney R.

Yelp
Where do I start. Gay porn. Cheap beer. A mix of hot & ugly, young & old, white & brown guys (well. Mostly white) but they are playing good music. There's a big dance floor & there is a separate karaoke room. Oh. They also sell burgers &! Hot dogs. Definitely a cool place to hang out & enjoy the view.

Yelp
Waited for over 15 minutes to order a drink at the bar. While there were between 5-8 people sitting casually, it felt very intentional and obviously rude and unprofessional. The staff seemed too busy hanging out with each other to give me and my girlfriend service. Would not happen in nyc. Won't be returning.

Yelp
Love love love this place. Happy hour pretty much every day, they have 2 for 1 deals. They even have shots that are around $5. There is so much dancing space, a pool table, and more than one bar. People are nice and the bar tenders will make you laugh. Free WiFI and the music is always good. Theres even an outdoor section too!

Yelp
I saw the tiniest guy with the largest wang here. I mean, really... he was about 5'2" with a 9 incher. And he snaked around the stripper pole like his life is hanging from it. I have never seen anyone do splits like him either, male or female. The U.S. Olympic gymnastics team ain't got shit on this guy. They only had Absolut and Smirnoff on the day we went (in the vodka selections). Hell no, I ain't drinking that crap. So, I ordered water. The other dancers were OK. But Mr. tiny man with humongous wang stole the show.

Yelp
DISCLAIMER: I am a straight female. So, the story goes like this: After shopping with my travelling buddy ( gay male - I was shopping, he wasn't ftr ), we wanted to be in a bar drinking for THE RAPTURE 2011. Stopped in at a fantastic locals bar on St.Laurent called Barfly and got our Rapture drank on. In short, we made lots of friends there. ( Very cool place, separate review on Barfly). And our new local, gay-dude friends invited us to dance at Le Stud which they frequent. Obviously, I know better to head somewhere not appropriate for me and my travelling partner is also VERY sensitive to this as well. But our new friends assured us it would be fine. It was the first night of Disco night in the upper bar. I was DEFINITELY not welcome at the downstairs bar where my friend tried to get us drinks before we headed upstairs. Fine, I get it. I was the only chick there - which didn't really bother me and I kind of expected. Headed upstairs to disco night and HAD A BLAST. Still the only chick in the place but was served drinks by a friendly bartender, and I danced my ass off. Typically not a dancer but the place was bumpin', the music was great and everyone was dancing. And NO ONE up there seemed to care that I was there having a good time dancing. In fact, they were quite welcoming. Phew! A few other girls showed up about an hour into the evening. Overall, I liked this place. For the gays: The place was huge and had great DJs - upstairs and down- and there were tons of dudes. Seemed like a total pick-up joint. For me, I had a great time upstairs at Disco night and was glad I pushed through the initial cold shoulder downstairs. Bathrooms were a bit of an issue for me. But again, to be expected. I hope they continue Disco night and continue to be cool to straight chicks upstairs cause it really was A LOT fun.

Yelp
I stopped by this bar to check out the scene on a Thursday night. It was packed (but not overcrowded) with lots of guys shakin' their booty on the dance floor. There were 4 bars open on the night I went, and I never had to wait for a drink. Friendly, sexy bartenders slingin' drinks and lots of cruising to be had among the locals. Open late (past the time the subway closes, I discovered!). It's easy to pick up a piece of a** at this bar -- anybody can get laid here ;)

Yelp
Really on the fence with my rating, but this bar left a bad final impression on me. I probably would've left a 4 star review, had I not encountered the door/coat check guy. Came to Montreal for 5 nights, and ended up here almost every night. Visited all the other bars, and found Le Stud to have the most laid back atmosphere and down to earth guys. Drinks - I feel bad for anyone who actually lives in Montreal, because their automated drink-pouring-system is horrendous. Do NOT expect to get any sort of strong drink here, or anywhere in Montreal. You're most likely better off getting shots and/or beers. Luckily, they seemed to have different drink specials every night. Atmosphere - The place is kind of big. There are four different "areas", each with their own bar and 3 out of 4 had their own dance floor. It's a good set up: not so different/spaced out that it feels disjointed, but spaced out enough so you really don't have to ever wait for a drink. They also have their own little "back patio" with benches where you can smoke. Heat lamps, even. The bad... Came here my last night, and sat at the bar. I was carrying my hat, jacket, and gloves, as I had all week, without problem. Many/most other patrons had jackets and hats as well. Had a few drinks, then went outside for a smoke. Came back in, and the doorman told me that I had to get coat check because I was "all snowy." I was standing outside under a balcony and was not at all snowy. I asked if I had to get coat check, as only a few other patrons had used the coat check service. He said that yes, I had to. I then left. Ive never heard of anything like this in my life before. If you require coat check, everyone should have to use it. Not sure what was going on, but it really ticked me off.

Yelp
I loved coming here during my stay in Montreal. My boyfriend and I were staying in the area and came in here twice on a weekend. Friday we started our night here. It was pretty empty still but the drinks were cheap, the bartenders were nice, and we enjoyed ourselves and danced a bit on the sparsely populated dance floor. On Saturday night we rolled in about an hour before closing time and the place was packed. Drinks still cheap, bartenders still nice, this time the dance floor was totally packed and alive with energy. The music was great, mixing classic dance floor hits with newer pop. I had a great time here, I would definitely come back next time I'm in Montreal.

Yelp
I visited Montreal for the first time with friends for NYE 2013/2014 and hung out at Le Stud a couple of nights. We first arrived on Sunday and the bar had more people than I expected and the music was really good. You could tell that the DJ was enjoying the music as well, which I love to see. The bartenders were super sweet, one by the back bar who was featured in some ads was super sexy and sweet. Another "Michael" tended to me and my group and was very sweet, we spoke slowly as he didn't know much English but he didn't see annoyed by that which is nice. We went back around 1:30 or so on New Years and the music wasn't as good downstairs as that Sunday night but it also seemed to be dying down a bit which is cool. The place looked like a little version of the Eagle here in NYC and was nice & clean. I would definitely go back on my next trip there.

Yelp
Very chill bar with cheap drinks! We met a friendly bartender named Claude and had long conversations about the US versus Canada--he gave us the low down on Montreal as well. And then his boss gave us free shots! Highly recommend! Plus I won $40 on the video poker machine :)

Yelp
Spent my last night here in Montreal. Great bar and with awesome bartenders! Drinks are cheap
google avatar

Yelp
Pure fun. French and english spoken here, and the staff are attractive and helpful. Monday and Tuesday karaoke (with French-speaking host) are riotous and entertaining. The music is some of the best, and there is a fun dance floor. You will also probably find a date for the night here, because Le Stud is cruisy hot!
google avatar

Joseph I.

Yelp
Love love love the music here. It was on point every night I went. Even on the Monday night following Black and Blue. Bartenders were friendly and prices were very reasonable. As mentioned, you won't get a strong mixed drink here or any gay bar in the village since they use automated pouring systems but stick to beer and/or shots and you'll be fine.

S P.

Yelp
Great happy hour! Big location with multiple patios and bars. This is a capital G Gay bar, not a queer space. Great view of the village!
google avatar

Johnny F.

Yelp
Good place to come for drinks, lots of daddies looking for fresh meat, party boys, pool tables, porno videos, video games, relaxed atmosphere. I was with a cousin from the US and his friends and we were not harassed or singled out for not speaking in French...that´s an improvement

Mike S.

Yelp
This use to be one of my favorite gay bars in North America because it was the only bar I knew that was men only. I hadn't been there a few years and was there last weekend and found out that is no longer the case. Absurd, I don't go to Curves demanding to be admitted. The have an automated pouring system now so don't expect a strong drink.
google avatar

Joseph D. S.

Yelp
It is fun, and large, and crowded even when other clubs are empty. I just wish the bartenders were interested in serving drinks. Maybe it is a cultural thing, but they often take a long time doing nothing before getting around to seeing if you would like to order something. I still keep going back. These aren't the hottest guys ever, but they are typically friendly and there is a fun dance floor.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Le Stud is an experience like no other. So much so I had to purchase an official Le Stud t-shirt.

Yelp
i went there ones with my Partner i like it. well you know you have to be in the mood for that kind of things, i guess some people dont like that kind of places , but the stud its all about that, the darknes kind a sexy place to go, i like it a lot,

Steven C.

Yelp
Came to Montreal for Fierte/Pride week this year, went to Bar le Stud our first night, and returned 4 more times over the course of the week. We also went to at least 5 other bars and clubs and Stud had the friendliest staff of any of them. We met Sam the first night and he really made us feel at home--super friendly and accommodating. He was probably the best bartender we met at any bar in Montreal during the entire week. I hope he's there again the next time we visit! Stud is a great place overall--fun crowd, relaxed, friendly atmosphere, good drinks. Great experience.

Granny B.

Yelp
Tonight I stopped by with 2 friends for a couple drinks, and towards the end of the evening the bartender that is positioned north east of the dance floor charged me 20$ for 2 pints of beer and a bottle of water. When i asked him about it he was a total jerk and made a scene, trying to spray me with the soda gun. He was trying to scam me, and i wasn't as drunk as he thought i was. I asked another bartender what he would charge for my order and his response was 14.50$. I will never come back to your bar and I want all your patrons to know that they should be careful as the bartenders are trying to take advantage of the customers. Fuck you bar le stud.
