The 8 Best Places to Drink Wine in Paris, According to a Top Sommelier | Bon Appétit

"Come for the Art, Stay for the Wine Opened in 1980, Willi's, with its bright blue facade, is a fixture in the 1st arrondissement. This French wine bar, which is actually owned by an Englishman, is perhaps most famous for its wine-themed posters, which are commissioned each year and created by contemporary artists. A selection of them hang throughout the two-room space, which includes a long wood bar area with stools and an adjacent, larger dining room. The wine list specializes in the best Rhone vintages, but also includes a nice selection of White Burgundies. Affordable a la carte dishes and prix-fixe menus of French classics, as well as Spanish charcuterie, are also a draw."

7.8/10 Food was good, we got the chicken and the bouillabaisse and both were very well done. Traditional French cuisine with a slight modern spin, nothing super new but very clean and executed well. Price wise it’s a little pricy. That being said, I do think they use very good ingredients and very fair portion sizes. Chicken and fish were around 25 euros each dish. Restaurant is relatively new and very clean with lots of seats. Would I go again? Probably not, but if you’re in the area and looking for something, this is a decent option.

Food: Who needs food? This is a wine bar and the wine card is fantastic. Okay, in all seriousness we didn’t eat here because we had other plans, but the food around us looked lovely. Service: The service people were lovely, but a bit aloof. Atmosphere: The ambiance and the art are incredible. What a hideaway. I’d call it a must visit.

Google
🍷✨ Excellent wine selection, but a bit pricey Willi’s Wine Bar is a great spot to enjoy a carefully selected glass of wine. 🍇🍾 The wine list is extensive and well-curated, making it a solid choice for wine lovers. 🍷👌 We didn’t try the food, so we can’t comment on that. While the experience was enjoyable, the pricing felt a bit high—€26 for two glasses of wine. 💸 Still, if you’re looking for quality wines in a cozy atmosphere, it’s worth a visit!

The staff are very friendly and provide polite service. There are plenty of seats, so you don’t have to wait in line, making it easy to drop by.

It was wonderful experience for which was to be good food and service. Also, as korean, it is so comfortable to support br korean employee to order. He has good expertise for wine.

We came here for an early lunch. We got 2 wines, the lunch set which comes with main and appetizer and a plate of meats to share. We finished it off with a lemon tart and an espresso. The fish here was so succulent and nice. It was shocking how good it was. I would definitely get this again The cold tomato soup was really refreshing and addictively delicious. I would get this again. The meat plate was okay - it went well with the wine but not my top pick. Lemon tart - the crust was too thick. But it wasn't too sweet. It was nice and tarte. Overall I really enjoyed the ambiance of this restaurant. It was very laid back. The servers were nice and super accomodating. The food was good but definitely on the pricier side. I would recommend for lunch

Ate at Willi's for a family dinner of 8. The food was cooked well but the service,or lack thereof, spoiled the experience. After being seated ,we waited 30 minutes to get a menu and order wine( an expensive bottle) and after bringing the bottle we had to pour it ourselves and was empty after six glasses. With two empty glasses we then waited another 20 minutes before we could find our waitress to order another of the same. Food was agreeable but not memorable.Price: performance poor.

Yelp
Willi's Wine Bar gets everything right about Paris. We had a fantastic evening. The place is casual chic -Parisian style of course. The menu has elegant, gourmet selections and great wine. They allow you to try the wine before pouring a glass. The pollack dish was one of the better meals I had in Paris with perfectly roasted fennel and creamed Lima beans. Again almost all of the staff spoke English. Overall -if you are ever lucky to be in Paris , please consider making Willi's Wine Bar a stop in your dining itinerary.

Yelp
A visit to Paris without stopping at Willi's is like coming to the city of lights and not walking. I've been coming here over the years (collecting posters) and tasting my way around French wines. It's a must visit and always recommend it. This visit was just for wine (Bandol Roses) and cheese of course.

Yelp
Had a glass of wine which was fine if uninspired. The place was full of the international crowd. Didn't try any of the food though this isn't a place I'd go eat. Wasn't particularly paid attention to. Instead, the som/wine-dude spent the better part of half an hour talking to his friends who may or may not have known something about wine. Not very professional. OK, I was there alone and probably didn't look like a big spender, but you treat everyone well as a baseline. Anyway, just meh.

Yelp
Willi's Wine Bar gets everything right. The setting, the wine, the food, the service...we had a fantastic evening. They are the epitome of fresh, tasty French dining in a casual setting (and they easily accommodate English speaking guests). The menu changes daily. We had a melon and spec salad, followed by chicken with vegetables and herb sauce, topped off with a chocolate terrine for dessert. Delicious every step of the way. I identified a Rhone wine that I like and asked the server for a recommendation among the available vintages. He was helpful and simultaneously mindful of cost. We had a wonderful time in this friendly and comfortable bistro. I want to plan a return visit to Paris just to come back here.

Yelp
Our friends had gotten engaged here 20 years ago and insisted we experience Willi's. We're glad we took their advice because this wine bar is great. The Staff are excellent. The atmosphere and vibe is cool and relaxing. The walls are covered with their custom prints (numbered and signed by artist commissioned) readily available for sale. We tried 4 different wines two white and two red. They even had us try the wine before pouring the glass to make sure we liked it. For the meal we split a charcuterie, then for the main we had herb roasted chicken and slow cooked lamb. In a word Succulent. Cannot recommend Willi's more.

Yelp
Willi's Wine Bar was recommended to me by my current employer. She said it was not to be missed and so my friends and I made a reservation for New Year's Eve. We did make sure we had a reservation prior to going in. This was for December 31st, 2021. They checked our Heath Passes and we were seated quickly. The menu was a prix fixe menu. We had a tatin of carrots, red onions, and hazelnuts. Then I had crab meat ravioli in a crab bisque. My entree was Normandy scallops with pumpkin hummus. For dessert, I had Willi's traditional chocolate mousse. The entire meal was fantastic! The ravioli was sensational as was the crab bisque. The pumpkin hummus was divine! The hazelnuts in the dishes were such a lovely addition. That is not something seen in many American dishes so I really enjoyed getting to have them as a savory element. Willi's Wine Bar was such a delight. If you're able to stop in, grab a glass of wine and enjoy. It is such a unique place. The wait staff was so kind, even humoring me and speaking French to a very beginner French speaker. The artwork on the walls is so fun to look at and they even gave us postcard-sized copies of some of the artwork.

Yelp
A bright atmosphere, fantastic and enthusiastic staff and beautiful dishes. The pollack this evening was exceptional! Make your reservation and GO. To be clear the waitstaff and bartender are quite welcoming- the manager/owner doesn't seem to appreciate your business. c'est la vie à Paris

Yelp
Wonderful, nothing has changed in almost 20+ years. Warm, welcoming, friendly, and well selected menu choices which will have you come back for more, without worrying about over drafting your credit card.

Yelp
Cutest wine bar. Scrumptious meals. Adorable neighborhood. Five stars all around! Get the cookbook and bag and even wine glasses if you need some.

Yelp
We literally walked pass here and decided to stop by before our dinner reservation. Sat at the bar and get some wine and cheese. Staff (two ladies hustling with elegance) were both very friendly, fluent in English (very helpful for our 5 year old basic French skill), and knowledgeable. We had them pick two rounds of white and red for us and were pleasantly surprised. I am extremely happy when the Cheverny 2016 "Pure" a combination of Sauvignon and Chardonnay picked for me. It was tart but not dry, sweet but not overly sweet like some Sauternes. So happy of the recommendation that I get to try something I normally wouldn't. Also the cheese platter they made for us go very well with the wine. We got some goat, some nutty milky cheese but the most surprising one is goat cheese with needle threading blue cheese which is totally not overpowering and delicious for a non-blue cheese eater like me. Definitely one of the very pleasant experience we have had so far!! :) also, when a sommelier stopping by here during their Paris trip, you know you can't go wrong coming here.

Yelp
There weren't a lot of wine bar options in the area, and Willi's got fairly good reviews online, so we came for a drink in the afternoon. Initially, I was skeptical because of the name since it sounded so ... not French. They have a good number of wines by the glass, but I had hoped they would have more choices since it was a wine bar. That said, they have many more by the bottle, and I think it's pretty common for friends to just go and try a few bottles to share unlike how we usually do a few glasses of our own in the US. Glasses come in 10 cl or 15cl, and there were also carafe (50cl) and full bottle options. We tried a cote du Rhône and also a champagne. In the afternoon, they have a light menu, so I got a croque monsieur, which used appenzeller, which is unusual, but that's what appealed to me. During the day, it's a pretty chill place, and they have cool art on the walls. Bathrooms were also very clean.

Yelp
Cool spot! Shared a nice bottle of rosé with a few friends, and I also had some amazing apricot dessert that I unfortunately can't remember the exact name of. Friendly staff and great ambience.
google avatar

Yelp
This was a perfect lunch, and Rose was a wonderful and extremely sweet server. Three of us shared a beautiful bottle of Chardonnay and an array of dishes. It couldn't have been better!
google avatar

Anneke D.

Yelp
Great ambiance. When you first enter you notice the bar to your left, brimming with bottles of all types. The tables are charming café-style, and the arched ceilings and framed art make you feel as though you stepped into another era, maybe even another city. It's got a homey, hipster atmosphere, and watch out: it gets loud. The acoustics could be better. Our perfectly bilingual waitress kept our wine glasses fully filled and contributed to the group conversation. I would come back here just to banter with her at the bar. On the food side, not bad. I had the entrée-plat-dessert dinner formula: asparagus starter, beef main, and strawberries and cream dessert. I chose the asparagus solely because it came with eggs mimosa, but unfortunately mimosa they weren't: the chef had simply crumbled hard boiled egg bits over the stalks. The main course was more satisfying, though the beef was tough to cut even with the serrated knives provided--it came with cubed grilled potatoes and whole spring onions in a wine reduction sauce. Dessert, usually not my mainstay, was the best part of the meal (or second best, if we're including the wine). The strawberries and cream were nestled atop a baked oatmeal treat that was just the right amount of sweet.

Yelp
I've ate here every visit to Paris. Service is great and food and wine never disappoints! Reasonably priced delish French food. You can't find a better wine selection at al price points. And the poster art, well I have three in my home!
google avatar

Alison G.

Yelp
This was by far my best meal in Paris! It was a charming place, with authentic and fresh menu items, and the best wine. Merci to the staff for an unforgettable experience-it was my first time having black rice! That and scallops, yes it was to die for!!

Yelp
I was lucky to stumble across Willi's wine bar after an extremely disappointing meal at La Bourse et le vie. I decided to stop in and try and redeem the night since it was my last one in Paris. I've always wanted to go to Willi's, but stayed clear as I thought the place would be extremely touristy. I was pleasantly surprised as the atmosphere was amazing, the patrons were mostly French and the staff were all extremely knowledgable and helpful, especially Agnes. For some reason, most restaurants in Paris don't offer a section of cheese, instead you have to choose one. Luckily, Willi's deviates from the norm and I was able to sample a number of delicious cheeses. I had a glass of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2012 Domaine de Bearend and a Petit chèvre (a goat cheese from the Loire), a Lingot (a sheep from the SW of France) a Conte (Jura) and a Miniepoisses (from Burgundy). I was glad that Willi's saved what would have otherwise been a disappointing final night in Paris. I'm now a fan and look forward to going back.

Yelp
Great place to try some great wines. Friendly service. Small menu...Highly recommend.

Yelp
I think that the French Bistrots we have been to in the past 2 weeks are so much better for food quality and variety, and Willi's has stayed the same. The reason to go here is the wine bar and wine list. Great selection and great prices. Starter of foie gras was delcious, especially with a side of Jura sweet wine. The pintade was dry, when I asked for pink, I was told, it only comes one way, monsieur. My wife's veau was chewy and grisly, it was saignon as ordered.
google avatar

Bonita B.

Yelp
My husband and I frequented Willi's when we vacationed in Paris last June and also 2 weeks ago. I have many food allergies and the woman at the bar made certain that I had something I could eat and enjoy. Perfect! We had so much fun chatting with the bar staff and trying different wines and champagne. We bought our 2nd poster, too. The first one is in our kitchen. The 2nd will go in our house on the coast. No doubt, we will be back! They are getting new wine glasses in the late spring! Go! Bon appetite!
google avatar

J T.

Yelp
I did not dine here but stopped for a before dinner glass (or two) of wine. Fun place with lots of happy people. Very clean, well lit and an "all very good" wine selection. Willi's recently opened the space next door so seating for dinner has about doubled. Yet another great spot in the vicinity of Palais Royal.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Lovely staff and excellent ambiance. Their wine selections were to die for especially the Rose. I had a ham and cheese sandwich, made with jambone ham and a lovely Swiss cheese. The sandwich was almost deconstructed I'm away, it was like sheesh was on the outside in places. It was served with an arugula salad.
google avatar

Bryan E.

Yelp
This place is quaint and good food/wine. Low key. The linguine and the croquets were all quite good
google avatar

Alex N.

Yelp
They've expanded their space, so generally easier to get a reservation, but still do that on the weekend. Great selection of wines by the bottle or glass. Love the fun wait people here. It's great for lunch, dinner or just a snack (cheese plates are excellent).
google avatar

Sherri H.

Yelp
We went to Willi's on our last night in Paris on a trip celebrating our 30th anniversary. The restaurant is bright and the walls are lined with the signature wine posters (they have a catalogue of those that are available for purchase). We started with the foie gras (comfortable to share). Our server recommended the perfect wine for our main courses - wild boar and duck breast. Both dishes were perfectly prepared - tender, full of flavor and beautifully presented.
google avatar

Frank S.

Yelp
After 40 plus visits over the last 20 years it's probably time for a review. Willis hasn't changed much. He pioneered the introduction of superior producers (Raveneux, Clape, tempier, Lafon) with small production to Paris. Many remain on the well chosen and reasonable list. Fish dishes are consistent, beef is fantastic, and the addition of small plates is fun. We choose cheese over the sweets. Say hello to my fave server, Rosemary, if you're there at lunch.
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
The wine selection is impressive, and the wait staff is good at making recommendations on what to drink, even in English. (Yes, they all speak English very well, and the owner/manager was clearly a native English speaker.) We started with apps of quail and artichoke with morrells. Both tasty (the quail was better, even though the artichoke had a 3 Euro supplement). BUT.... in a town known for its steak tartare, we were shocked at how overcooked the food was here. Both our steak and salmon dishes would probably have been delicious had they been cooked properly. A steak ordered rare came out with almost no pink at all, and the salmon was dry. Overall this place is a good value (3 course menu for 34 Euros) but the food seems to be just so-so, and certainly not particularly innovative. Foodies will be disappointed. As an aside, one of the other patrons found a screw in her salad. I know, it happens, and probably not a regular thing, but still....
google avatar

Ana Clara S.

Yelp
Amazing choice of wine, high-quality food and a very friendly staff - what more can one ask for? It's pricey, but you pay for the quality of the service and the products. If you're an anglophone you'll feel right at home.
google avatar

Hokie F.

Yelp
Why can't we have these in U. S. ? Certainly a highlight of our trip to Paris. Willi's is small, well run and a perfect blend of pleasant service, great chef inventions and a very well selected wine offering - try the red Bandol on their by the glass listing. Also, no outdoor seating so no cigarette smoke wafting in.
google avatar

Jeremy J.

Yelp
To begin, we order some red wine to go with our crusty bread and sparkling mineral water. Our server is friendly and able to help us decipher the menu, as well as relate some specials. Without pause, I order the chilled cucumber soup as my first course. I like gazpacho and other cold soups (I even tried a tangerine one years ago); plus, cucumber can be very refreshing. Indeed, the soup is heavily laden with cream or butter, yet crisp to the taste buds. A nice island of freshly chopped tomato relish topped with micro greens floats serenely in the middle. Not much else is grabbing me from the menu, so I go with the old standby: beef. It is a medium-rare piece of rib, broiled and drizzled with a red wine reduction sauce. Beneath the slab of meat are green beans and quartered potato. On top are watercress leaves, which add a crunchy texture. The beef is cooked perfectly and the sauce adds tang, but otherwise it's just a well-prepared simple dish. I should have stepped outside the box and experienced something new (a chance I will have later that evening). For dessert, I cannot resist the rhubarb tart. The puckery sweetness does not last long, as I scoop up every last forkful before anyone else at the table tries to horn in on my selection. As coffee follows the meal, I suddenly realize we've been sitting here for about 2 hours, talking away and enjoying the food. Even so, we are reluctant to pay the bill and head back out. It may have taken nearly a week, but we finally learned how to eat like the French!
google avatar

David A.

Yelp
Yes they speak English. Otherwise, I was kind of disappointed. Long wine list but we picked 3 wines that they were out of. Service had an attitude and despite the name of the joint, was completely clueless about wines. Atmosphere was cramped and commercial. Food was okay but not great by any means for Parisian standards. So all in all - marginal despite the reputation.
google avatar

María U.

Yelp
I went there with my family, we were a group of 6 with no reservations, the place was full, and they were very kind to prepare a special table to receive us. The wine and the food was excellent. The only bad thing was a male waiter that it was not that nice like the rest, especially when I made specific questions about some plates, for my grandma of 88 years old. I definitely will come back to this place
google avatar

Mike H.

Yelp
Called in after having dinner a couple of doors up at Maceo, owned by same people. Nice choice of wine from as you would expect France but also a selection of Spanish, North American and New Zealand. Nice staff, pleasant eating area, we sat at the bar. Can't comment on the food as
google avatar

Miranda B.

Yelp
We spent over 2 hours having dinner at Willi's a few months ago, with good food, beautiful looking appetizers, an unexciting cheese plate, and slow service. We arrived close to 8pm to a half full restaurant and no reservations, but were given a table. Within 30 minutes the whole place was full, as was the bar. Servers were a bit overwhelmed. An appetizer salad of cherry tomatoes and cheese was beautifully presented, as was the crab and avocado salad. The full menu was translated for us by the waitress who was actually mostly working as the bartender. She was very helpful. The lamb with Moroccan spices was rare, complemented by the hint of cumin and turmeric and other spices, and the sauce included bits of apricot as a sweet contrast. My chicken was a rich tasting piece in a hearty sauce. The cheese tray was the biggest disappointment of the evening. It was simply 4 different slices of cheese served on a plate. No information given about what the cheeses were, no fruit or nuts or cracker to accompany it and offer a taste contrast. Wines by the glass were available. The place itself is attractive, with posters commissioned by the owner on the wall providing bright colors.

Randy H.

Yelp
A combination of great service and a superior wine list make this a fine dinner option. The food was good, but not outstanding. The setting and atmosphere are both very nice. Good choice for dinner or just a drink.
google avatar

Randy D.

Yelp
I took some family members there for lunch. I've been before and have always had excellent food and excellent wine. There wine list is incredible. After-all, it is a wine bar. Willi's is own by a brit, Mark Williamson, very nice friendly man. His wait staff are bilingual with many native English speakers. We started with entrées of various salad, an asparagus salad, artichoke salad, and a salmon starter. All 3 were excellent. All the ingredients were fresh and perfect. For our plats we ordered the grilled salmon, the veal, and the Caubillaud. Both fish dishes were perfectly cooked, with the skin nice and crispy and the meat moist. I had the veal, and the veal was perfectly prepared and not heavy with sauce as they sometimes do. For dessert I had the cheese plate while my cousins had the orange tart and the strawberry dessert. They said both were excellent as well. The cheese was a great choice of various chevres, comte, and blues, excellent contrasting cheeses. We had ordered a nice bottle of Sancere. Excellent for what we had. During our meal, next door was doing some construction and really banging hard on the wall. I was concerned because at one point, they knocked a whole through the wall. I called a friend to contact Mark about the intrusion. Within 20-minutes Mark was at the restaurant to make sure it stopped. When we got the bill we were comped for our wine for all the noise and inconvenience. This NEVER happens in Paris. This would most certainly happen in the U.S., but never in Paris. Mark and his two restaurants, Willi's wine bar and Maceo are "class" acts. I have nothing but good things to say about these restaurants! Chapeau!

Ron G.

Yelp
While the food was OK for lunch, the service felt like the worst I had ever experienced. Mark Williamson was asked by my friend: Is the toilet this way? Answer: you can go that way if you like but you won't find it. I said to him: "I came here for my birthday 8 years aho and had Raveneau - it is the real thing." He replied: Well now you have a fake one....I mean really!! And the young waiter was the worst I have ever encountered in Paris, wanting take my meal half finished, bringing coffee while still drinking wine. Even wanting to take the wine away! Never again.

Yelp
Best crab cakes ever had. Bar area has a wonderful atmosphere fueled by great wines. The cuisine is sincere and exceptionally good. Highly recommendable
google avatar

Yelp
We were there in July 2015.. A wonderful meal and some great wines. A must stop for an inexpensive meal for what you get. Beautiful posters of Willi's decorating the walls. It is not a tourist trap. A few fashion models were also dining there the night we were there,
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Big disappointment this year. We have been going to Willi's since 1998 and this was the worse dinner ever. I liked the rehab of the space - but the overhead lighting was so bright dinner had the ambiance of eating in a high school cafeteria. Food was overcooked - the second year in a row so think it is not a fluke but a call for a change in the chef (François Yon). Mark Williamson needs to spend less time blogging and more time at his restaurant to get things back on track. Maceos is doing just fine though. We will try it again next year but if not improved will not return.

Yelp
Been meaning to eat here on each trip to Paris. Had lunch here today. One of the best French meals ever. Sat at the bar to benefit from huge discount. Chicken and white wine. Unforgettable.

Yelp
Seven years ago as part of our honeymoon we stumbled upon Willie's. We had such a fantastic meal and evening we return every single time we go to Paris. Food is lovely and the service is positively charming. Lovely way to spend an hour or four drinking wine and eating great food.

Matt T.

Yelp
Great meal and great service (especially as a party of 5 with no reservations). Very attentive service and suggestions were dead on. Seasonal foods and amazing presentation. Casual, but upscale with the right amount of noise and excitement.
google avatar

Yelp
We stopped in after dinner to grab a glass of wine from Willi's. The bar and wait staff were extremely helpful in explaining the wines...and spoke English too. I was surprised at the amount of "locals" it was probably a 50/50 split between Parisians and tourists. Great spot for a glass of wine, we'll be back if in Paris again!
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Amazing place... great wine, food and atmosphere...
google avatar

Kim A.

Yelp
I found this place in a travel book and just as it said, it's a great place for Americans to go but it still retains it authentic feel. We sat at the wine bar and had dinner. Mine consisted of a wonderful cheese plate (how could anything be better than wine and cheese...in Paris) and my hubby got some sort of very tasty croque (can't remember if it was monsieur or madame). The wine was amazing and priced very reasonably. The best part about this place (besides the wine) is the atmosphere. We chatted with the staff about the best places to live in Paris and how they came to live and work in the city. We commemorated our visit by purchasing a Willie's Wine Bar poster to adorn the walls of our home.

Yelp
Good food and wine in a fun atmosphere. And their chocolate terrine is very good!
