I hesitate to post this review, since I'm not sure I should reveal it's splendor to the rest of the world.
My husband and I were in need of a quiet, isolated retreat, in the thick of the country, preferably surrounded by animals and one or two hiking trails. While browsing my Sunset magazine a few months ago, I caught a glimpse of the mention of this farm stay. I checked out the website and, after a blissful weekend of relaxation, I am officially in love with the Leaping Lamb Farm.
Reasons we will return again and again and again:
- The friendliest hosts (Scottie and Greg) and farm animals I've ever encountered
- More animals than most petting zoos...horses, sheep, chickens, geese, turkeys, dogs, cats, a peacock named Fred, and a burro named Poco. Most of whom are very friendly!
- You will be the only guests on the property during your stay, aside from Louie, the Labrador who loves to lick people. He visits the farm on occasion to play with the other dogs.
- My cell phone doesn't work here and that's a good thing
- No TV (thank GAWD!), but a DVD player for movies...perfect!
- They even have Tabasco sauce in the cupboard for us!
- We get to feed the animals, even the baby lambs!
- Hiking along old logging trails, surrounded by cedars and greenery
- Talk about educational...I'm already designing my own chicken coop.
- Ohhh, the food!! Fresh farm eggs, fruit, and a hot, baked breakfast item every day, like potatoes with garlic (both from from the garden) or Monkey Bread (words cannot express how yummy this is). Oh yeah, did I mention the homemade pickles and freezer jam in the fridge? Hello!
- Burt's Bees toiletries!
- Super comfy beds, washer & dryer in your cabin, spacious and fully equipped kitchen, nice bathroom and living area, well-appointed with blankets and pillows
- Excellent for kids! They'll wear themselves out here, for sure.
- There's a little creek for splashing and playing, but the salmon spawn here in the fall
- You can purchase their lamb and homemade soaps. I highly recommend both.
Notes: This is the type of place you go to get away from people and attractions. It's a place where you can revel in not having anything to do, where you can read your book all day in peace, hike up a mountain, wake to sound of the rooster (er, roosters, plural) crowing, and feed crackers to a peacock. That is...ONLY if you don't mind walking in sheep, dog, and horse shit while interacting with the landscape and animals. If you have to wear makeup and fashionable clothes on vacation, this is not the place for you.
As Scottie so accurately pointed out to us on our arrival, you can buy white bread and beer in the nearby town of Alsea, but I suggest you plan on bringing your own lunch and dinner items. There's also a restaurant in Alsea, but we didn't try it.
If this sounds like your type of place, book well in advance, then go and enjoy it. Just don't tell anyone else!
