In Puerto Rico, Where to Eat on Guavate’s “Pork Highway” - AFAR

"The first stop along Highway 184 in Guavate, this lechonera stands out with a red awning and a playful piglet cutout for photos. It’s a casual, bustling spot with picnic tables for roughly 150 guests and a counter where staff carve pork behind glass. Regulars swear by quick pit-stop staples like morcilla and a cafecito—both called out as excellent—though it also serves full plates of roast pork and traditional sides, making it an easy, satisfying entry point to the Pork Highway." - Katherine LaGrave

10 Essential Puerto Rican Foods and Where to Try Them - AFAR

"A traditional lechonera recommended for pairing arroz con gandules with slow-roasted lechón asado; the pork is cooked rotisserie-style for hours and simply seasoned (garlic, oregano, achiote oil, salt, and pepper) so the meat’s natural flavor stands out, with a crunchy skin prized as the mark of a well-cooked lechón." - Jessica van Dop DeJesus, Chloe Arrojado

Google
We stopped here on our way to the airport. It’s right off the highway and about as local as a place gets. This was the best roast pork we had the entire trip. It was juicy, came out hot and there was a sea of sides to choose from. We highly recommend especially if you are going San Juan to Ponce.

Google
You really gotta try it the blood sausage and yellow rice is great the suckling pig is good dark meat is the best. It's an open air establishment so hot & humid is the norm. The amount of food for plates is good the price is reasonable.

Tara Torres

Google
Fantastic lechonera right off the highway. Open air but seating is covered. We found parking with no problem but there was quite a line on our 2nd visit. Lots of locals and tourists but it moved quickly. So many delicious sides and cold drinks. Great experience!

Google
This place was amazing! We were traveling through to the southwest side of the island and randomly stopped here to eat and so glad we did. Staff was amazing and explained all the food options and let us sample a few different sides. A must try if you’re in the area visiting!

Google
Very simple, arrive, get in line, order what you would like to eat, order your drink, pay and grab your self a table. This is the great part, once you seat down, you’ll get to cherish one of the best “lechona” you’ll eat in your life, tender juicy meat full of flavor, guaranteed you’ll leave this place happy. Easy parking, plenty of seating, variety of options to choose from to accompany your “lechona”. There is also a chicken option if you don’t like the pork one. Great service, friendly stuff, definitely a place to go back when visiting Puerto Rico. I rented a car to go around the island and planned our roadtrip the way we would finish having lunch at Los Amigos and they didn’t disappoint.

Google
Stopping here was a great idea. The atmosphere is comfortable and actually feels modern for how long this business has been here. Staff was friend and helpful. Well as much as they can be with how fast they are working. The cafeteria setup makes sense for this place as it is the only way to get as many people through as they do. Walking up and seeing the lechon already tells you this place is going to be a great place to eat. I ordered arroz Amarillo wh9ch is a must at this place, Morcilla that was moist and amazing, their Yuca was actually the best I've had on the island so far, and of course.. Lechon.... that was truly amazing. Every bite was worth this stop. I actually can't wait to stop here again. If you are in this area. It is a must stop place. Don't pass this place up. Its completely worth it.

Google
The pork lechon was delicious. We also had the chicken lechon, pork sausage, rice with ribs, and plantain. All were good. You pay by the pound around $7/lb. The side is by the container size which range from $5-13. Its right off the hwy so convenient. We didnt have to go down the winding mountain road so convenient.

Benjamin Hickman

Google
Good food for sure, good selection of local foods, cafeteria style serving. Nice service. Clean restaurant, clean bathrooms.

Yelp
Definitely a stop you want to make when doing the ruta del lechón (pork highway) in Guavate. Right off the freeway, make sure this is your first stop. Best to arrive early to avoid a very long line. However, the line moved fairly quickly. Food was mouthwatering. Private parking with an attendant. The parking is shared with a coffee shop owned by the same people. The coffee shop sells coffee and craft beer.
google avatar

Yelp
Evidently this joint is quintessential PR lechonera. It's right off the freeway, which makes it very noisy. You sit on picnic styled tables. We got there right before closing and it felt as if the employees didn't want us there. The lady taking our order was not a happy camper. The lechon itself was somewhat dry and lacked flavor, seams that all the flavor is in the crispy skin. I wish they had some type of sauce to go with the meat The beans and rice were delicious. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

Yelp
Excelente comida auténtica puertorriqueña!!! Excellent authentic Puerto Rican Food!!
google avatar

Gleicyane G.

Yelp
I loved this place. It honestly has some of the best lechón I've ever had. I would definitely return and highly recommend.
google avatar

Rosa M.

Yelp
Having the opportunity to enjoy authentic Puerto Rican food is a highlight of many visit to Guavate to experiences traditional PR staples : crispy, slow-roasted, succulent pork and pasteles . Pasteles is their version of tamales traditionally made with green banana masa stuffed with stewed pork meat. Sometimes yuca. To sample some of the best lechón in Puerto Rico, plan a day trip to Guavate and visit Lechonera los amigos (first lechonera you'll come across when you get off the highway ) The ambience traditional Service was prompt and friendly . Fun and musical ambience.

Yelp
I think this is hands down my favorite meal I've had on my last visit to Puerto Rico. The prices are reasonable, the vibes are impeccable, the food is amazing, and if you can struggle through parking with your front facing out, then there's even parking. You pay by weight and just order what you want - we got an order of lechon (the skin was so good), yuca (delicious), morcilla sin sangre (blood sausage without the blood that was really good), and some plantains. Plus yummy rice (arroz con gandules) with pigeon peas. You sit in an open air area and the place is bumping which makes sense because the food is sooooo good. I am hungry thinking about it.

Bianca K. M.

Yelp
Came highly recommended by our uber driver. Rerouted our whole itinerary due to this recommendation. Long line. To be expected when it's delish. Worth the wait and worth every penny. Clean. Well managed. Friendly staff. Everything was yummy & had plenty leftovers
google avatar

Candice G.

Yelp
Food is worth the five stars minus the macaroni salad that was bland with no flavor! Most the staff really friendly but the lady taking money was very rude! I ask about where I could get extra napkins and she acted like I was putting her out. The ambiance was cute, there are a lot of other places similar so we may try out others to compare

Zeni V.

Yelp
Have always enjoyed lechón on every trip to PR since childhood, but this was my first visit ever to Guavate. Had a blast. I'm used to more tender meat for lechón, but this pork was tasty--amazingly crispy skin! Must try their yuca en escabeche. Delicious! And their cuajito--tanto sabor! On my visit there were no frituras like empanadillas/pastelillos, but there were pasteles. (Traditional PR pasteles are meat pies with ingredient influences from the Taino/African/Spanish--like a lot of PR food--made with green bananas and other root vegetables in the masa and stewed pork.) This place is just good food and friendly service. Busy but worth the wait. Lots of families; mostly locals.
google avatar

Vanessa G.

Yelp
If you are looking for the local experience and eat where the locals eat here is where to go! The Lechón was delicious, the arroz con gandules, the morcilla, plátano maduro... everything! The place was clean and all servers were nice.
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
It's good but it lacked seasoning for me the lechon that is. I hate to say it but this road seems like a bad one. Please to travel to other parts of the country to understand what i'm talking about. This is far from one of the best
google avatar

Ste L.

Yelp
Dios mío es todo que puedo decir sobre La lechonera Los Amigos! The flavor of the pork is amazing! The skin crackles as you eat it and the tenderness of the actual pork makes it a heavenly experience. The arroz con gandules are fire and the arroz con habichuelas are on point also. Si estás de visita a Puerto Rico, sin reserva recomiendo que comes en La Lechonera Los Amigos!
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
When in PR, gotta take the drive to Guavate to get lechón. This was my introduction to my husband and the kids to lechón and the tasty sides including their favorite, sweet plantains. We ordered three dishes of lechón, two different types of rice (arroz fin habichuelas and arroz con gandules) and the last sides were yucca and sweet plantains. All were finger licking good, generous portions. All tables and facilities were very cleanly kept at all times with an employee diligently picking up and cleaning after each group cleared out. Will be back next time!
google avatar

Yelp
Great food very clean good Easy parking very attentive. A must visit if you're in the area, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Stopped here while in PR and have to say it was delicious! The place is a local hit spot and boy did it live up to the hype! When in PR, take a ride to this restaurant! You won't be disappointed! Best lechon!

Torres E.

Yelp
I would have given 5 stars but i couldn't for the fact that i have been there 4x's and the first time the food was ok the lechón honestly lacked flavor second time the rice was very salty and the third time the yuca was very mushy that it was almost like mash potatoes the last time i went which was recent we had spent the day in Jayuya and on the way back we were hungry and decided to stop and the food was no different the lechón was very bland no flavor and then i got the worst piece the rib area and it was so dry and it's sad that it's always so busy with a line and the food is just blah highly overrated place. I do recommend trying further in to Guavate where there are spots that the lechón is very flavorful and the rice is on point.
google avatar

Janet P.

Yelp
There's no way you could go wrong with this food in this place is so good and so delicious and so flavorful service is fast just have to have patient because there's always a line that ambience is a family place. It's very nice.

Laura G.

Yelp
Fast service and traditional Puerto Rican food. Very close to highway. We had lechón, arroz con habichuelas, yuca, plátano y pastelon. Everything was sooo good. Highly recommend this place! The group agree this was a good option!
google avatar

Mike P.

Yelp
Best lechón and arroz con guandules. Very flavorful and authentic!!! The pastéles were also fantastic!!! The service is nice and the ambiance is very much Puerto Rico. Chilled laid back and family oriented. Love this place.
google avatar

Angel B.

Yelp
Right off the highway 52. Great location. Generous food port. You pick as much or as little as you want. I recommend to come hungry and make this your one meal of the day. $34 for two meals and beers. Justo al lado de la autopista 52. Excelente ubicación. Porciones de comida generosos. Eliges tanto o tan poco como quieras. Recomiendo venir con hambre y hacer de esta tu única comida del día. 34 dólares por dos comidas y cervezas.

I H.

Yelp
Amazing food, rice. Macaroni salad and of course lechón y pollo! You can't go wrong here! Clean and great service! Gets busy during lunch but worth it!
google avatar

Marc F.

Yelp
We had an itch for lechon and this absolutely scratched that itch. The skin was perfectly crispy. Lechon was a little dry but it was the end of the day so it was a little difficult to expect fresh, juicy lechon. Would definitely come back next time we're in town. Super conveniently located right off the highway. Other lechoneras located further east are a bit more tricky to get to.
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
Best lechon in caguas! I come to PR for business trips and this spot is a must! The amount of food and for the price it's right! Only reason it's given a 4 star is that they seem to run out of their chicken very quickly so don't count on that for late dinner!

Alba P.

Yelp
Good service, delicious food and reasonable prices. The line looks long it moves fast
google avatar

Lola K.

Yelp
I could tell the food was good by the length of the line. I couldn't wait! I was lucky to find someone in line who spoke English. She helped me order. The only person who spoke English there was the person at the register. Everything was GREAT!! I ordered two lunch plates both with pork and rice and pigeon peas. I also had sausage (not blood), yuca and plantain. You must come here if you visit Puerto Rico.

Stacie P.

Yelp
La comida era sabrosa, el servicio excelente y mi estómago estaba muy satisfecho. Agradezco Lechonera Los Amigos - GRACIAS!!!

Laura V.

Yelp
The best lechón & drinks ! Highly recommended if you are looking for authentic Puerto Rican food

Duane V.

Yelp
I was looking forward to trying the famous lechoneras while on Puerto Rico and this was one of the highest rated on Yelp. We tried the pork and the blood sausage and most of the sides. It was pretty good but it was a big disappointment from what I expected. The pork was cold and a little dry but tasted good. The sausage was ok but nothing special. The rice with pigeon peas was the best side along with the Yucca. I would like to try one that cooks on real wood coal instead of gas fire.
google avatar

Kevin A.

Yelp
WOW!!! This is a truly amazing spot! The price was well worth the experience, taste and views if you go up the mountain a bit;) I had the roasted pork, yellow rice and beans oh and a coke. The roasted pork was very flavorful with a nice crisp crunch! The experience was just by far amazing to see the workers serve everyone fresh food. A tip is to go up the mountain and you will run into amazing views, dancing, drinks and souvenirs shops. Oh don't forget to stop and the souvenir shop outside the restaurant the guy is so friendly and has good prices:)
google avatar

Dee V.

Yelp
I really don't know how these people get four stars! I waited on line for almost an hour!!! The roast pork was hard and dry and the rest of the food was no better!!!

Angel G.

Yelp
The food was fresh and clean, the service was courteous and very friendly. And best of all delicious.
google avatar

Annette L.

Yelp
Lechón was tender and tasted good. Portions were large. Ambiance was average. Food was ordered Cafeteria style. Service was good. Only think bad Its was 5:00 pm and they had ran out of many of the dishes.
google avatar

Rafael P.

Yelp
Famous location. Food service was efficient, and there is usually a long line during peak hours, but it moves fairly quickly. Large selection of food. It was not to my taste, however. I found the lechón to be on the blander side. I also ordered arroz con gandules and a pastel. My pastel had garbanzos in it, which is a regional thing and again, not to my northern coast liking. It is a cafeteria-style, informal location with plenty of seating. Parking can be a little tight.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
This place is delish. Every time I go to Puerto Rico I make it a point to stop by for lunch or dinner. Food is so tasty and the location super clean. Pre Covid parking lot was a little difficult to get in but so worth it. Staff is super friendly and prices are reasonable. The lechón is so good. My kid is q rice and bean expert and when I say he polished off two plates that he did. They also have chicken for the non pork lovers along with other options. A must go if your on the island.

Jose M.

Yelp
Great service good food lov it. Family place easy to find the place. An price wise is very good.
google avatar

Art C.

Yelp
They get points for efficiency and being operationally a bit less ridiculous, but even though the meat was pretty good, it's probably number #4 out of 4 on our list. But since all the lechoneras we visited were wonderful, that's actually not a diss at all. You should still try this one...

Suzanne M.

Yelp
This was our first time here and it was delicious! The rice, pernil, batatas and green bananas were really good! It was nice to see the food behind the glass and pick out what we wanted and try some different kinds of food. The people were friendly as well. We will definitely be going back there!
google avatar

Pamela M.

Yelp
This is situated on the pig's route. When we got there on a Sunday around noon, the line was very long. Apparently, Sundays is when locals do chinchorro, which is bar hopping and eating with friends and family. If you are in a hurry, avoid chinchorro routes The smell of roasted pork caresses your nose as you wait to be served. It's pretty much, stand on line, order, pay and find a place to sit joint. Everyone we encountered were very pleasant. They do have bathrooms there. Definitely a must when in town.
google avatar

Channel W.

Yelp
Tembleque was by far the star of the show here! It was awesome and would totally recommend. The pork ribs were great too.

Allan O.

Yelp
Gran lugar buen servicio gente amable recomendado al 100. Ambiente familiar, Café shop
google avatar

Rick R.

Yelp
This is Puerto Rico! Real deal food at an amazing price. We got literally everything available and it was all good.
google avatar

Jaime R.

Yelp
$20 for two drinks! Better places up the hill! Just go to Guavate. Much better. Wow. Abusive.
google avatar

Maricel B.

Yelp
One of the must do's here in Puerto Rico is to try their lechon. I was kind of skeptical at first because I've grown up eating lechon at family gatherings and I have always been a big fan of it. After trying it here, I am more of a fan than ever before. The staff are friendly and helpful. The lechon was flavorful and delicious but what the best part of the meal was the pork skin. It was crunchy and not oily. So good! I will definitely be back :)
google avatar

Tanaire M.

Yelp
Thee best restaurant in all of caguas or dare I say the best I've had on the island of Puerto Rico! Stumbled upon this on google searching for top rated places to eat with my baby, this place didn't have a perfect 5 stars but decided to risk it. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! Every single thing I ate here was perfectly cooked, flavorful and tasty. We had lechón with the arroz con gandules, pasta salad the yuca and the fresh rotisserie chicken. I will never eat anywhere on the island again, but here! Once you find something good you just know it. To wrap this up, perfectly cooked authentic puerto rican cuisine at affordable prices. I'd like to note that Restaurant was clean as well, I'm extremely picky at where I eat with my baby but this place was spotless.

Antonio L.

Yelp
Bought 4lb of the pork, 1 1/2lb morcilla, a bowl of rice/gandules and 1 small water for $82, but more than 50% of the pork were bones, skin was pale and bowl bottom was very fatty. We couldn't feed the four of all.
google avatar

Amy M.

Yelp
Right off the exit it's a convenient location to grab a quick bite while on our way from San Juan to Ponce. Great food! The pastele and pork was delicious.
google avatar

Minerva O.

Yelp
The first one on your right getting off the autopista (52) when coming from San Juan is the best in that area. The roast pork is tasty and if you ask for the crunchy skin it really is good. The beer is cold and the staff very nice. My actual favorite Lechonera is farther into Cayey, it is so good it's my first place I go to on Sat/Sun when they open at 11am.
google avatar

Teisha V.

Yelp
This place was soo good, my entire family enjoyed it. The pork skin was soo crispy I went up and bought just that (my second time around). Great Puerto Rico dishes like pork different rice and beans variations, sweet plantains, blood sausage, pork sausage, fried plantains, pasteles and much more. Even a cute pig picture posing station. Definitely would recommend stopping by earlier in the day, but worth the visit for sure.
google avatar

Selena H.

Yelp
Great bbq, they roast the pigs on the premises. They also had numerous sides, including smashes plantains, sweet roasted plantains, rice, several kinds of sausage, and a decent bar. It's a great place to get adventurous - bf loved the pork stomach!
