The 16 Best Bakeries in O‘ahu | Eater

"Lee’s Bakery, which is over 30 years old, is famous for its custard pies; it sells almost 3,000 of them each Thanksgiving. In pre-pandemic years, the bakery didn’t take preorders, prompting hours-long lines outside (and at least one instance of a customer camping out overnight), but now you can preorder a pie. Ideally, pick one up just after 8 a.m., when they emerge from the oven. But even cold, it’s wonderful — a smooth-as-silk custard, just barely firm enough to be sliced, cradled in a tender crust." - Martha Cheng

Still the best custard pie that I’ve ever tasted. It’s sweeter and the texture is like flan. It came right out the oven so it was soooo warm. Staff are friendly and fast. Paid parking in the back on Ala Moana Blvd. It’s better to phone order because they do sell out.

Lucky to go there today without a line! Custard pie is so creamy! Also tried their pineapple bun, and other pastries for my kids, which they'll definitely love. The people there are sooo nice! 🙏

4/13/2022 A long time ago, during the holidays, my hubby went to a dinner and brought me home a slice of custard pie. Now, I'm a fan of pie but not custard pie because I've tried many awful ones. He kept telling me to try it, even though he knows I don't like custard pie. I'm sure glad I did. As soon as I took the first bite, I instantly changed my mind about custard pie. Lee's Bakery & Kitchen has THE BEST CUSTARD PIE! It's creamy, not too sweet, and the perfect texture. The crust is flaky and not super thick. Glad that my brother-in-law loves it so much that he's willing to stand in the long holiday line to get it and share with us! Today, was the first time I went to Lee's. Didn't get a custard pie since we already have dessert for this weekend's dinner with my brother-in-law. Instead, I got a Pineapple Bun, a Glazed Donut, a Hong Kong Bun, a Tuna Bun, and a Char Siu Manapua. The Hong Kong Bun was because I asked the friendly lady which item was the most popular or favorite of customers and she suggested that bun. It came out to $8 and change. So far today, I ate the Glazed Donut, part of the Hong Kong Bun, and the Tuna Bun. That Tuna Bun was stuffed with tuna and the bread was so light and fluffy. Yum! The Hong Kong Bun was like a delicious butter roll, and the Glazed Donut was airy and not super sweet. I'm sure the other items will be scrumptious as well. I love Lee's Bakery & Kitchen!

When getting a custard pie I don’t know of a better place to go. There is also a wide selection of other baked goods as well. Parking isn’t the easiest. But you can call in an order and just run in and pick up if you have some drive around the block.

Google
It was so smooth and melted in a mouth. I tasted many custard pies in Honolulu, this is the best one! Crust is thin, but firm enough to hold the pie. Just right sweetness and creamy custard. Number one recommended custard pie for sure. And I recommend to call them to hold it, other than that you will not see it in the store!

Google
Chen siu su and the buttered bread here was really good ... very friendly service. The surrounding area isn't great, or maybe just kinda more in your face in Hawaii

Google
This is one of the best to get custard pie...so creamy and tasty....definitely is a must if you are in the area.....they take orders too except Thanksgiving....

Google
Lee's bakery is by far absolutely the best place to buy baked goods. They have nothing that isn't phenomenal. You can actually taste the love and effort that they put in every single donut. Plus they are always so polite and welcoming. You couldn't pay me to go anywhere else. Every single baked good that's myself and my picky family of 6 hat hat has been hit.

Yelp
Only in Chinatown can you find delicious treats for both your stomach, your family's stomach, and your friend's stomach without breaking the entire bank. Lee's Bakery is my go-to whenever I want to celebrate a treat for my coworkers from both savoury and sweet treats. When you come here expect quick and friendly and highly flavorful service in a casual atmosphere that doesn't emphasize on much else when you're in a rush.

Yelp
We should have known better that if you come after lunch the shelves will be pretty empty. Just so happened we had dim sum next door and once we saw their sign we wanted to see if they had any custard pies. The sweet and friendly employee behind the counter said call and order, hand motioning with her closed fist to her ear, smiling at us. We'll know better next time.

Yelp
I guess the Ghost Yelp started 2024 taking away my review I believe that I had on Lee's Bakery in Chinatown. Today I was walking around Chinatown and decided to pick up their famous custard pie for dessert tonight . Got there about 11am and yes they still had a few more pies left . I remembered at Lee's bakery their custard pie is more on the eggy side meaning you can taste more egg than sweet custard . It's depends on the person what kind of custard you prefer . I'll definitely buy Lee's pies time to time but definitely I'm not the person to go and wait for hours and hours before thanksgiving LOL!! Support local

Yelp
Located in downtown Honolulu this humble bakeshop offers pastries but the most popular ones is the custard pie! Haven't tried 'em yet but will try next time if I am in the area. Anyhow, for today's quick grub: tuna bun & Chinese custard bun. All good especially the custard bun. The tuna bun though, both much. Tuna filling is way too dry. I will come back next year.

Yelp
Absolutely love Lee's Bakery for their delicious custard pie love them warm fresh of the oven and cold! Plan your thanksgiving this year though, Lee's is always on the news for the long lines at thanksgiving! Lee's will be closed this year for thanksgiving 11/20/23 to 11/23/23!

Yelp
Lee's Bakery is well known for their Custard Pies. The pies are so good that the lines go around the block during the holidays. They also have a selection of baked goods. I can only attest to their custard pies. Delicious egg custard and a good crust. Service has always been good. Even during their busy days. Enjoy
google avatar

Yelp
The not sure if they changed their recipe or what. I don't remember it being this bad. Not much filling in the long Johns. Custard lacked flavor and has the consistency of thin watery yogurt. Definitely not worth it for the price. Two stars because their custard pies are always good.

Yelp
I love Lee's Hong Kong Buns and I cannot lie!! She got the best HK buns in Chinatown. I updated my review because I made it early enough for them buttery buns.

Yelp
This is a takeout bakery with fantastic pies. The lady at the counter is very sweet. Take cash. They accept credit cards but charge a fee for it.

Yelp
Ordered the regular Jin dui and coconut Jin dui. Service was fast. Me personally I prefer the coconut Jin dui. Was so hungry forgot to take picture.

Yelp
This place has the best pies on island in my opinion! Due to that, be prepared to wait, especially on holidays. Everyone lines up to get their pies. The lady who works there is extremely friendly and kind. The younger boy who works there is also super helpful. They do their best to get people in and out as soon as possible! The custard pie is so creamy and delicious. The perfect amount of sweetness and the crust is so buttery and flaky. I ate 3 slices by myself! Definitely give this place a try! Parking: Need to find street parking or go to a municipal parking structure and walk over.

Yelp
We went to the HEART Street Festival, we had fun painting Raku style bowls. After, we were done, we walked over to Lee's Bakery. We lucked out and bought their last custard pie. Sooooooo, good, so custardy not too sweet and a wonderfully flaky crust. The lady who helped us was so nice and friendly. I can see why the lines are so long for this decadent pie. I haven't had a pie this good in forever.
google avatar

Yelp
As if the entire island doesn't know that Lee's has the very best custard and pumpkin and pumpkin custard pies in the state! But did you know that they have delicious fruit pies and chiffon cake as well?!? And sometimes they sell the Chinese rice pouches "harm joong" for a third party that is both reasonably priced and delicious! Also available and more than reasonably priced are other pasteries in showcase. Every now and then I get a craving. This usually happens when I am driving through the area. Since parking can be an issue and I have to be really strategic when parking and shopping in downtown Chinatown, I am so thankful for them obliging me and running my custard pie out to the car as I roll by. Of course I always have the exact change and tip ready! And I have been fortunate that there was never a line when I drove by in the afternoon. Original owner of Lee's used to be a pastry chef at the other bakery that was famous for their custard pies. He left Delite to open his own bakery. Shhh I preferred Lee's better. At Thanksgiving it is rumored that the line is so long for Lee's pies that the line wraps around the block! I wouldn't know...I have never gone on Thanksgiving. Thank you Lee family for making and having these delicious treats available. As long as you continue to make custard pies,I will be back!

Yelp
This place has been around for years! When come to New Year's or Thanks Giving time, the line is around the corner. Pretty good price for their bake goods.

Yelp
When I think about Lee's one things comes to mind CUSTARD pie!!! And yep I finally got it this time. Word to the wise put in a order if you want more than one pie. Last week I stood in line and it was sold out. The next batch would be in 45 minutes if I wanted a custard pie it comes out then. So I opted to order and pick it up for New Years. Lee's has been around for decades with the 3rd generation taking over. I remember when I first tried it over 30 years ago it is the best custard pie I ever had. The pie just came out and was rather soft but still good. Although the next day after it was chilled it was heavenly. I can see why people wait in line and/or put in pie orders. It's the real deal! Parking is hit and miss in China town so best to have someone drop you off which you pick up your goodies.

Yelp
Picked up assorted pastries for the office: Custard danish, char siu manapua, hot dog manapua, pineapple bun, Hong Kong bun, apple turnover, two kinds of strudels, and some cookie-sized "Chinese wedding cakes." https://www.facebook.com/groups/hawaiikorea/permalink/1833289733712043/

Yelp
Their fresh custard pies and fresh baked pastries are amazing! They are quick to service you at the counter so your wait isn't very long! It's a quaint little bakery in Chinatown that produces high quality baked items!

Yelp
A family friend of mines drop by my house to gift us a Custard pie . Mind you, my family don't really eat pie. But we sat it on the counter until tea time. My mom first tasted the pie and told me it's really good . The family Proceed to taste the pie and we are all so surprise how good it is . It's soft and moist and NOT too sweet. It is perfect dessert. I checked the bag and confirmed with my friend . We then came back and purchased to see if it's the same. 100% we will become a repeat customer .

Yelp
Lees Bakery has lots of pastries/buns like tuna buns and hot dog buns. But honestly like what do you guys put in your tuna bun bread?? It's delicious! Texture is soft and bread is sweet. Also we know you put choke sugar in your chocolate chip cookies AND WE LOVE THEM! I don't like sugar much but can't resist your cookies when my sister buys them
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is located in Chinatown so parking can be difficult to find. However we got the peach pear and the egg custard pie and both were delicious! The custard was so creamy with just the perfect amount of sweetness. The crust was also flaky as well. The peach pear pie was a little burnt on the top but also very good as well. Check this place out when you are on Oahu!
google avatar

Yelp
Best peach pear & custard pie gotta love homemade crust really friendly service they are a bit short staffed but the pies are still large and yummy

Yelp
Why Lee's Bakery?? The locals know; when in Chinatown, come to Lee's and get their Custard pie. In fact, It's a hot item during the holiday season. Take note, there's no parking as Lee's bakery is a store front on a busy street. Make a tag team plan with someone else who craves custard pie. The, "I'll drop you off and circle around to pick you up" method worked great for us, twice :) Are you a fan of crème brûlée? How about flan? If yes, I'm pretty sure you're going to love their smooth and creamy custard. The pie is made fresh daily and is purchased warm. I prefer my custard pie to be eaten chilled.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is located on North King Street in Chinatown. They don't have parking...you would need to look for street parking so for me, I need to get dropped off, run in and out because I hate to parallel park. I used to love St. Germaine's custard pie and was sad when they closed. Someone from work bought a custard pie from here and I thought it was almost as good. Now, whenever I need to buy a thank you gift, feel like treating the neighbors or for Thanksgiving, I drop by to buy a couple of pies. Haven't bought in a while so was surprised that it's now $18 each...pricey! Today, I thought the custard pie was okay. May need to come back and try it again.

Yelp
I think everyone has at least heard about the lines for Lee's Bakery & Kitchen in Chinatown during the holidays. It's usually on the news each year. This place has been a tradition for many people and they are willing to stand in crazy long lines to get some of their famous pies for their holiday meal(s). Aside from the holidays, you can get yourself some tasty bakery goods without any long wait. You just enter off King St and you'll immediately see the display cases and someone standing behind to help you with your order. Usually it's the older gentleman that's there (at least in my experiences visiting). The interior is somewhat dated but has this nostalgic feeling to it. Prices sure have gone up as their Custard Pie is $22 now (as of March 2023). Are they worth it? Yes, they are excellent pies and they offer one of the top Custard Pies on Oahu. It's great for potlucks, parties, client meals and just because you're in the mood for pie. I recently came to pick up a Custard Pie because my clients asked me to bring dessert to a home cooked meal. Honestly, I didn't know what to bring since it's not something I typically eat but thankfully someone suggested pie and I immediately thought of Lee's Bakery & Kitchen. Fortunately they still had a couple Custard Pies when I went. You can't go wrong with buying a pie from here. Solid pies in the Chinatown area.
google avatar

Linda K.

Yelp
Lee's Bakery is our go to bakery for their delicious custard pies! The quality is always consistent. You need to preorder your pies prior (during the holidays) to make sure you get a pie. It's like a Seinfeld episode. Pretty much if you don't preorder during the holidays, Wendy or Theresa will tell you no pie for you. We've seen many people get turned away. Preorder, preorder, preorder during the holidays! During Thanksgiving the line is out the door and is incredibly long! The price is now $18/custard pie. Only suggestion to avoid the long line is to purchase a day or two earlier than Thanksgiving/Christmas. Refrigerate and serve on Thanksgiving. It's just as delicious! Enjoy!!!!

Lorraine Y.

Yelp
Im always so grateful to have a pie from Lee's. My only hold up from here is that you have to wait for pies to be ready. They sell out quick! I go often, so it's not just a one time thing. Parking is always a challenge. But definitely one of those best kept secrets in chinatown.
google avatar

Shelley A.

Yelp
Custard pies are the best! It was nice that the employees get to have Thanksgiving off but sad for us, so we went to get our pies early! They were delicious!
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
My sister-in-law suggested to try their custard pie. And I'm so glad I did! My parents who were visiting that time were able to try it too! My dad is very strict with his sugar intake but he absolutely fell in love with the custard! The sweetness was perfect. They had other flavours of the pie but I only wanted to try the custard pie for now as it's highly recommended by my sister-in-law. I'd totally try and come back to try more of their baked goods. I wish they had a smaller version of the pie, like a single serving. But I will definitely be returning when we visit Chinatown!
google avatar

bong i.

Yelp
This place is legit-make sure to call and place your order in advance. They are always busy- but it's worth the drive to downtown
google avatar

Darren Y.

Yelp
Another local spot in Chinatown. Come early before they run out of goodies. Got a pineapple bun which was perfect - not too sweet yet very tasty. Came back for more and they were all gone! Got a donut instead which was also good. Will come again
google avatar

Yelp
Courteous and fast service with the best custard pie on the island. Their Hong Kong buns and custard tarts are also delicious.

Wilhelmina S.

Yelp
The best custard pies fresh outta the oven and ready to sell after 8am or 9am call first to check and to reserve them! also the long johns is a must y'all won't regret it
google avatar

Tracy S.

Yelp
excellent custard pie! it's so good, the only custard pie I eat. It's definitely worth a walk into Chinatown.
google avatar

Miss Ninja `.

Yelp
Best place to go for custard pie. Call ahead to reserve your pie. Staff is friendly. It's off the Main street so suggest to have someone drive you so you can run in and pick up.
google avatar

Pua N.

Yelp
I haven't been to Lee's Bakery for awhile but was in town for an errand yesterday so decided to get a pumpkin/custard pie. Boy was it a disappointment!:/ Partially burnt & it left an aftertaste in my mouth! For $22 I'd rather spend my $ at Epiya bakery! Their pies are delicious & consistent in taste!
google avatar

Ginet H.

Yelp
These guys have been in business for a while and have the third generation working in the bakery. They are known for their stuffed baked bread: manapua, ham and cheese, and hot dog. The bread is always soft and sweet. Depending on the time of day, they may have chiffon cakes, cookies, and pies. If you plan to pick up pie for Thanksgiving, ORDER AHEAD and GET THERE EARLY! They have been known to have a line for days on Turkey Day. What they have in the case is what's available, but whatever you pick up is sure to please the palate. Parking is limited around the area, so plan your chinatown trip thoughtfully if you plan to stop by. If you're riding through town on the bus, you can always jump off and jump back on after picking up a treat as they are right on the bus line on King Street.

Yelp
Word association: word- Lee's Bakery. Response: custard pie! Nine times out of ten, I bet that is the response you would get if you did a random sampling of people in Chinatown or chowhounds on Yelp. Lee's Bakery has a nice selection of baked goods but their claim to fame is their Custard pie. Like so many other reviewers, We have been going to Lee's for decades to get our custard pie fix. Their custard, custard/pumpkin pies are so popular, they seem to be in a perpetual "their just out of the oven and you have to let it cool and set". I think it's been decades since I have walked into Lee's and was able to get a pie that was set and a pie box without vent holes. Yes, they fly off the shelves as soon as they are displayed- better to preorder for pick up unless you have the time. As others have said, you have to give the custard pie a chance to set to get the optimal taste experience. Your patience will definitely be rewarded. Remember: you bought a delicious custard pie, not custard soup. My idea of a great custard pie is not opening a box with the filling splattered all over the inside like when you buy a beef stew plate and tilt it too much. Yeech! Over the recent years we avoid Lee's when it's too close to the holidays- yeah, those epic waits on thanksgiving days are for the determined young. I'll pass and enjoy their stuff throughout the year. Their other offerings are pretty good, but those would be complementary pieces to the prime custard pie objective. Go to Lee's Bakery, check out the offerings, buy your custard pie and patiently wait for custard pie bliss later in the day. So worth it!

E Joyce L.

Yelp
They have an awesome pumpkin custard pie! Best pies in the State. There's no comparison! Wish they had another location other than where they are.
google avatar

Romney B.

Yelp
Best custard pie in town! Custards - pumpkin is awesome too. Should pre/order that. Also get a variety of other pies.
google avatar

Michelle N.

Yelp
Parents brought home a custard pie because my sister really wanted one from here. It was delicious! The slice I had was heavier than I thought it would be. Really enjoyed it as it wasn't too sweet and both the custard and crust were both done perfectly.
google avatar

Sandy B.

Yelp
The best egg custard pie ever. I went and asked if they had any pie left and was told it would be ready in 30 mins. I came back in 35 mins and they said they might have one more. Lucky me, that there was one left and it was fresh out of the oven. Make sure you call to reserve your custard pie ahead of time. It was so good. Buttery, perfect sweetest and so fluffy inside. I promise it's worth the visit and FYI is still good the next day. Wish they made smaller ones so I could take it back to San Francisco for my friends to try.
google avatar

Rick L.

Yelp
The custard pies and pumpkin custard pies are good. I don't know about standing in freakin' line at 2 AM on Thanksgiving morning though. $15 a pop, a super nice lady rang me up, I suspect she was one of the owners. Parking is hell, park in the inexpensive lots near by or pay the meters.

Annette N.

Yelp
Bought a pumpkin custard pie on Monday for Tuesday. The crust was just as crisp as if we had it on Monday. The pumpkin custard mix was milder than a full on custard or pumpkin. Delicious! This is not our first time at Lee's so expectations are high. They delivered. Thanks Lees.
google avatar

Wina G.

Yelp
The pies here are hands down the best in Honolulu! The custard pies are creamy and the crust is so light and flaky. The pumpkin custard combo is also crazy good. The texture of the custard is so silky. I'm not surprised that there's always a super long line rivaling Disneyland's most popular rides for Thanksgiving to get their pies. We just go off season. The pear and peach pies are also broke da mout with the top crust being so flaky. The fruit fillings aren't super sweet which we like. You also can get the fruit pies frozen to go- the directions are on top of the box. They also have several kinds of breads, pastries and cookies. All good!! Come early for the best selection especially on the weekends.
google avatar

Kaimi A.

Yelp
Best custard pies EVER! Yummers! This is a small place that can get busy, esp during the holidays. But so ono! Go get one and enjoy a slice or two (guarantee 2 slices per person!).

Charmaine D.

Yelp
Delicious custard pies and danish! Reminded me of Deelite Bakery's pies. It's our 1st stop when we fly in from Kona.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
One of the best Custard Pies in HI from Lee's Bakery. I haven't been here in awhile & it's still creamy & delicious! Good thing I called in my order as they were sold out today around 1:30pm. Street parking is $3/hr by coins or CC. Sometimes it's hard to find; it's all in the timing & luck.
google avatar

Dean N.

Yelp
I came here to buy a pie. Though I should have left with more than a pie. I actually called ahead to place an order to pickup a pie since it is preferred. It was a Sunday so parking on the street was a plenty. Clarification. It was Sunday morning and parking on the street was a plenty.
google avatar

Connie W.

Yelp
We came in the afternoon and the store was empty. But they said a new batch of Egg Custard would be available in one hour. Our friend bought a large pie and gave half of it to us. I was sooo good, very creamy and eggy, not too sweet, crust was buttery and cooked all the way. Must come back next time in town.

Yelp
Love their baked manapua. I always order them by the dozen and to bring it bake to Vegas.
