A beloved, decades-old spot known for its garlic chicken and combo plates. Rebuilt and reopened after a fire, which the Modesto Bee covered, it remains a local fixture for classic Chinese-American comfort.

Food here is always fresh and great. The servers are so friendly and helpful as well. The food is amazing whether you dine in or take out.

Marcial Velez

Google
Love the food 100% and customer service is great . Just not a fan of the prices of some of the items . But overall I give this establishment 5 stars due to the tasty food they serve and the friendly staff. Try it today if your looking for good Chinese restaurants in Modesto area.

Briz Flores

Google
I normally don’t give 5 stars but man… this food was good! I had the shrimp fried rice, orange chicken and Mongolian beef for $42. At first, It felt expensive but the portions were massive. Go now, what’re you waiting for?

Kevin McClarty

Google
The food is excellent..The service could be better. They don't check on you enough to see if you need anything and they only gave me one serving of iced tea. Their bathroom only has outside access which is a huge problem in the winter time. The last two times I have gone there I have received a lukewarm reception especially from the kitchen crew. They are not that welcoming to people when they come in which is disheartening at times.

Google
Ordered 3 meals for 3 people today, 2 of us couldn't finish it, and 1 didn't even try it, because of its look of it being prepared wrong and would be flavorless! 1 was a shrimp chow mein and I quote she said it was the plainest chow mein of her life! mine left a weird aftertaste after only 4 bites, (orange chicken)

Been coming to Lee’s kitchen since i was about 10 years old now im an adult and i bring my daughter here. The food quality & taste has not changed!! Its still just as amazing and delicious as i remember it in my childhood. Best chinese food in Modesto. Fast service, quality food very friendly staff and overall they are CLEAN. extremely clean facilities. Definitely love that its a family owned business as well. 10/10 my fav items are orange chicken, lees special fried rice & their honey walnut shrimp is the best in town!!

Google
This place is hands down one of the best places to eat. The food isn’t just good—it reminds me of my favorite Chinese restaurant back east. Honestly, it’s a gem. Feels like some kind of California classic. Great owners with a nice story too. I love Chinese hot mustard!

Yelp
I've never been to another spot that has eggrolls the size of Taco Bell Burritos!!!!! Lee's Chinese Kitchen is, definitely, a guilty pleasure for me. I love that they have the same selection you would expect from other Chinese restaurants, but what really gets me is their pricing. You cannot beat their lunch platter prices! I've tried several different entrees here and have been satisfied by all of them. It does take a bit to get your order, so if you are working on a time crunch, call to order ahead. When I call ahead, they've had my order ready in less than 20 minutes ALMOST every time. This spot is small. Definitely not the kind of place where you are going to eat in. My suggestion: Grab your food, go to a nearby park and enjoy lunch in the sun.

Yelp
Got the garlic chicken combo. The flavor of the chicken was good, but it was the weirdest nastiest pieces of chicken. Couldn't eat it. Pork fried rice was soggy and bland. Pork chow mein was just okay at best.

Yelp
I've not been here in a very long time, since before the fire. I'm very pleased that they reopened. Although I had very bland items (due to some stomach issues), the items came out hot and steamy with just enough flavor. I had the egg flower soup which included Chinese vegetables, a nice surprise. I had the chicken with Chinese vegetables, very tasty, I had them add a little garlic. The steamed rice was just right. Service was quick, very attentive despite a busy time; and the remodeled interior is very clean and comfortable. Great experience.

Sonja B.

Yelp
The food I order, I order to go so I call for pick up. I usually know what I want. So far I've been pretty satisfied with what I've ordered.

Nick E.

Yelp
Garlic chicken with rice and chow main. Had to have been some of the BEST and FRESHEST Chinese food I have had in a long time. Definitely recommend trying this spot out!

Sarah W.

Yelp
China gourmet use to be my favorite but after the latest owner it's terrible so I tried lees and it's soooo good!!!! They putt a good amount of meat in the chow mein and everything else I've tried is sooo good!!

Mimi R.

Yelp
Nope, if you're looking for good chow mein this ain't the place.. Actually just don't come here period. The stars be lying dude. The fried rice is dry, the orange chicken breading is so hard!!! The side of free white rice was dry and stale.I got combo meals to try a little bit of everything and paid $60... yeah never again. The pot stickers were OK, but like just ok.. okay. Like I ain't ever coming back for just okay pot stickers if you get my drift. But worst of all.. was the Mongolian Beef!! Bruhhh why was it like hard to chew beef and as if it was beef & broccoli but like they picked the broccoli out you know. The service was fast. The restaurant looked clean inside and plenty of parking. I just didn't like it ‍

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here since I was a little girl. Now I have my own child and every time we are back home in Modesto and crave Chinese food, this is where we go. The food is always really tasty, service is always so nice. The prices and amount of food are very good. I'm so glad they are still around after all this time.

Ariana M.

Yelp
This is place is horrible, food needs some seasoning. don't GO. we got some shrimp and it tasted like lemon glazed cake.

Erca B.

Yelp
Service was fast, food was bad. The chowmein was dry the orange chicken had a weird taste and it was hard never again.

Yelp
Best Chinese I've had, I got the #17 which came with: Garlic Chicken, Pork Chow Mein, and Pork Fried Rice. Let's just say it exceeded my expectations because the Garlic Chicken I was not expecting it to have spice to it. The rice was flavorful with a variety of flavors, not bland at all, the Chow Mein was complimentary as it suited well with the two other dishes, while still being delicious. In conclusion, would I recommend? Yes! This is the best Chinese place I have been to by far

Yelp
Excellent chicken egg foo young, chow mein and pork fried rice. Portions are large and food is delicious. We have been ordering take out from here over 40 years and are never disappointed.

Isaiah G.

Yelp
The plates are filled but the kung pao taste nothing like kung pao it was watered down to the max with no flavor and hardly any chicken I had also asked for extra spicy it legit taste like water steamed veggies and chicken mixed together with chilli flakes nothing close to kung pao chicken quite honestly an embarrassment coming home and seeing this watered down plate of veggies in comparison to how it's made in Most places as in a thick spicy paste

Yelp
My family went here for the first time and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. The portion size was generous and everything we ordered was delicious. The dining area is small but very clean. The only negative is that we didn't realize the volume of folks that would be picking up "to go" orders and despite having made a reservation we ended up having to wait more than 30 minutes to be seated and my elderly mother-in-law was struggling to stand for that length of time (minimal seating in the waiting area was full when we arrived).

Annette L.

Yelp
Food is amazing!! Especially the eggrolls and the beef on a stick!!! Anytime you call in an order they are so polite and never a wait when you get there

Yelp
My family has eaten at Lee's for quite literally generations. My great grandma was a big fan, and just yesterday we took my son with us for the first time. As always, everyone greeted us with a smile and since they know my grandma, they quickly swooned over the newest addition. The best deal is the combo plates, but make sure you start off with some fried green beans. They are fried in a tempura batter and come out salty, crunchy, and yummy! For entree, you really can't go wrong. I order the lemon chicken combo off the "secret menu" since I was a kid so I don't venture far from that. Some other notable menu items are the tin foil chicken, sweet and sour chicken or pork, and the prawns. No matter what you try, I'm sure you will enjoy it and the whole atmosphere at Lee's.

Kimberly A.

Yelp
they gave me the wrong order. Asked for walnut shrimp and gave me shrimp with red sauce. Food doesn't look like the photo. Whole food is ruined

Gilbert C.

Yelp
Been coming here for 45 years i believe. That should say it all. Best in the 209 hands down. Chow mein fresh and not greasy. Egg rolls are bomb. Good size portions as well.
google avatar

Emil C.

Yelp
All was good very good place. The walnut shrimp was amazing. Service was great and atmosphere perfect.
google avatar

PT L.

Yelp
Huge portions, great food, great & fast service! Non-greasy. Staff was very friendly!

Yelp
Rollercoaster Chinese food. Lees has been here forever it seems. Through the years this place has had times when the food was not so authentic to best of the best. Right now they are the Best of the Best. The food is fresh and perfectly seasoned. The sauces are the right consistency, and prices are fair. They offer a clean dinning room great service and a positive vibe. I definitely recommend Lees to everyone who enjoys Asian cuisine .

Marilyn B.

Yelp
My granddaughter is so excited because she can eat here since there are gluten free items, especially the soy sauce. The waitress was especially helpful, kind and interested to learn more.
google avatar

Robin H.

Yelp
The food is amazing! The price is comparable. I love this restaurant the workers are really nice and quick.

shelley F.

Yelp
Waited a month for them to open back up, was super excited. Ordered a number 17 and two number 19. On all three of the combos hardly any sauce on the garlic chicken or the orange chicken was very disappointed.

Lorri T.

Yelp
This is our go to place for Chinese food at least three times a month, 18 miles from home. It is the freshest most delicious food, so many menu items, food arrives quickly, staff is very gracious. Very clean environment.
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
I ordered the gourmet dinner for three. It was plenty of food. It was very very good and I'm going to re-order when I needed to take out again.
google avatar

Susie W.

Yelp
We love lees, their chicken in foil is really good. The staff is very nice and service is good
google avatar

Melinda G.

Yelp
I read several reviews on how good this place so I tried it and the food did not live up to the hype. I got the fried chicken, egg rolls, chow mein, fried rice and beef broccoli. The egg rolls were super greasy and did not taste fresh. Actually none ofnthe food tasted fresh. Fried chicken was dry. Chow mein was gross. Fried rice had no flavor and was mushy. Beef broccoli had canned mushrooms? Who does that? The only reason I gave them 2 stars was because of the staff. The lady that took my order was SUPER SWEET! Very attentive to all of the customers that were there and who came in. 0 stars for food. 5 stars for service. I still have not been able to find a good chinese restaurant.
google avatar

Peggy E.

Yelp
We have been going to Lee's for years. We really like it, but lately the sweet n sour tastes funny- We started just getting garlic chicken meal. It's very good, so that is the reason for the 4 stars.
google avatar

Rolland W.

Yelp
Lee's Chinese Kitchen is the best place for great fresh Cantonese fare in the valley, it's non greasy, delicious and has been a staple on Mchenry Avenue for many years. Servers are friendly and on the job, the proprietor cares about the satisfaction of the diners, reasonably priced for a large serving, they've returned from the disastrous fire in 2017 better than ever, l recommend it to anyone that wants good food. My Family and l moved to the East Coast of America, We've found nothing as good as Lee's, We miss it.

Steven V.

Yelp
They gave bomb eggshells ,chowmein is always on point and the price is always right for the amount - portion you get .. I get the orange chicken usually but everything here is great for the most part .. The plates are packaged right not sloppy like some places ,family owned and they are friendly ..little mom and pop spot
google avatar

Yelp
Been coming here since before the unfortunate fire that caused Lee to remodel and persevere. The food has ALWAYS been spot-on and great fair pricing. The garlic chicken plate with fried rice and chow mein is as good of a plate of Chinese food as anywhere! HIGHLY recommend this place. Great / friendly service and very good food!!
google avatar

Ryan T.

Yelp
The food here was decent but definitely not the best in our area my favorite part of the meal was actually the fried rice it was very good but the chowmein was mediocre and the sweet an sour sauce had way to much vinegar in it the service was really good and efficient and the ambiance was that of a normal Chinese restaurant nothing overly fancy will come back if in the area

Yelp
My 76 year old grandmother will say this is her favorite Chinese restaurant in Modesto. She's been going here since they opened as they've been in business about 30-40 years now and went through a remodel. I ordered an appetizer of egg rolls that came with two pieces and was not expecting two HUGE egg rolls. Now I get why some of the plates come with one egg roll. Nevertheless, I finished them both as they were loaded with veggies and came with sweet and sour sauce on the side. For my entree, I got one of the combination plates that came with pork fried rice, pork chow mein and orange chicken. You get SO MUCH food for your money. I barely put a dent in it by the time I was full. The orange chicken was okay but I really liked the pork fried rice and chow mein. I added some soy sauce to give it more color and taste. My grandma always gets the egg moo shu and says it's the best she's had. The food comes out quick and they came by our table multiple times to make sure we were still doing well. Looking forward to bringing her back the next time I visit and trying something else.

Yelp
Really great food. Always fresh. Came here a lot on my break because it was right next door. The staff is always friendly. Restaurant is clean.

Yelp
They give you your $$'s worth!! Food is good, flavor is nice. I call it "American Chinese". Facility is clean, good to eat in or take out. Their broccoli beef was very good!!
google avatar

Julia C.

Yelp
This place is definitely a hidden gem! The food was so good. Combination plates come with your choice of one item, fried rice, chow mein, spring roll & a drink. These are the heaviest Chinese plates I have ever purchased. Definitely worth every dollar.

Yelp
On of me and my wife's favorite place to go usually my wife doesn'twant to go out by she really likes this place especially the kind server's Charisma she go above and beyond keeping us looked after we returned several times and will be our go to Chinese food place!

Edward C.

Yelp
The food tasted really strange comparing it to other American Chinese food. The orange chicken was very citrusy and no spice. My mom called the chow mien anemic because it was so pale. It also had more onions the noodles. It even had celery. The best thing I had was the egg rolls. The place was nice I just probably won't go back for the food

Cindy S.

Yelp
Bummed I am even writing this review, being that we've eaten there since I was a kid. however there was hair in my fried rice tonight. How do I know it wasn't mine, because it was attached to the spoon and the spot in the rice that I was pulling it from. I grabbed it and flicked it off of my finger, my first meal of the day was a major let down. Our waitress on the other hand was amazing, but I'm done with this place.
google avatar

Marcus L.

Yelp
Lee's Kitchen has been a goto Chinese spot growing up in Modesto. Their food is great, the service is always well, and the new remodel since it caught fire looks outstanding. I often get the #8 with egg foo young, fried rice, sweet n sour pork, and an egg roll. When my friend's Grandfather would come down to visit from Colorado, we'd sneak away and go enjoy us some Lee's Kitchen. Wish he could still enjoy a plate from them now.
google avatar

Ella M.

Yelp
Goodness I was very surprised when I walked in to Lee's it has been completely remodeled and configured. It is now ultra clean and neat, nothing cluttered or dusty, the wood floors are pristine and unmarked. Tables clean and polished. Ordered our food, hubby had the luncheon beef and broccoli I had the vegetable egg foo young (spelling). It was so tasty and the portions are large, everything tasted fresh, hot and amazing. My chicken chow mien was so well made, hubby's beef and broccoli was over the top, but he wasn't expecting mushrooms, so he took those out. The cost was around $10 and we took over half of our meal home. Such a wonderful surprise. Highly recommend this for anyone who like Chinese food. Great food
google avatar

Steve G.

Yelp
Wife and I ate here about six months ago. I had a basic combo plate and my wife had fish & chips. We both give our food a 5 rating. Plus this is a very clean, comfortable place with good service.

google avatar

Laura G.

Yelp
Generous portions of great tasting food always get food to go at least 3 times per month. The chicken in foil a must have favorite for us!

Michele S.

Yelp
I just witnessed these HORRIBLE people take money from a homeless man who paid for his food and then they FORCED him to leave the restaurant. He asked if he could sit and eat and they refused him. They took his money and kicked him out to eat in the street like a dog. DO NOT EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT. I tried to discuss this with them but they would not discuss it and said they kicked him out because he smelled. DO NOT EAT HERE!!!
