Obituary: Houston Restauranter Lee Ellis Is Dead at 63 | Eater Houston

"A comfort-food concept centered on fried chicken and donuts that was part of the restaurateur’s broader portfolio; it was later one of several restaurants tied to a hospitality group that faced lawsuits and was sold off during the group’s breakup." - Courtney E. Smith

This place is absolutely horrid. My grandfather and I came here to dine in and it was a mess. Nothing was clean, terribly rude staff, and I guess a corner of the dining room is used as an office? This weird looking white dude (employee) kept looking and staring at me through a glass door while on the phone. Tell dude he has a staring problem. Anyway, absolutely terrible. This place sucks. Not to mention, the food was awful. Chicken dry as hell.

I LOVE THIS PLACE, Been here for years!!! But a staff crew full of minors and HAIR IN MY FOOD!!!!!!!! That is IT!!!!! My wife is vomiting because she has been eating and the side was in the middle of the meal. Jaden was very professional, however the female in the background on the phone was rude! I use to clean floors here in college for a meal!!! It was always good food and good staff!! I hope this was truly a mistake.

It was only a drive-through. At 5 pm. Monday. It took forever. They forgot our biscuits. The potatoes and gravy were cold. So, When we got back to our hotel, we weren't going to turn back for all we went through. The chicken was very good. We do enjoy even a good-tasting cold fried chicken.

The food was pretty good. The restaurant was relatively clean. The staff were polite and courteous. The staff for also helpful. The food was as expected. I would recommend if you're in the area. I would have to say though, they do have Pepsi products. So do be advised of that.

Google
Gross! The tasteless chicken was old with mushy, wet, sliding-off breading. The baked beans were soup. The old potato wedges had no flavor and weren't fully cooked. The sweet tea even tasted like it wasn't mixed right. What a waste of time and money.

Honestly, it’s hit and miss. Sometimes it’s fresh and absolutely amazing. Other times it’s old, precooked and dried and mind you I only visit during lunch so it should NEVER be old and dry. They open at 1030 and I come at 1230.

I have to say I’m from the deep souther where Lees is a huge chicken chain known for great food. This Lees has by far been the worst experience I have ever been to. The chicken always smells like old grease. The food is never hot. I even tried to go when they open to get fresh chicken and it smells like chicken they saved from the day before. I got a chicken pot pie that was 80% breading and 20% filling. The gizzards are usually always good and so are the biscuits but it’s definitely not worth bragging. Customer service at the drive thru is fantastic. Do better on the food or shut this location down.

Google
Normally I wouldn't write such a bad review, but my last experience calls for it. I don't know what this restaurant is doing different, but they need to go back in time to when they knew how to fry chicken. Is it a new cook? The chicken has no flavor and isn't breaded properly! It looks burnt all the time and doesn't taste any better. Their chicken used to be light, flaky and crunchy. All around fresh. Now, it's not worth the trip. I used to brag about how good it was to anyone that would listen. Now, it's embarrassing. Do better Lee's, because what you're serving now is disgusting. The last (4) times has sealed the deal.

Yelp
Went through the drive thru...ordered $28 worth of CRAP! I got my order and asked her :DID YOU CHECK THE ORDER?? Yes..So I drive off. Get to work and GUESS WHAT???? The order was wrong!!!! SMH.. I called to tell them and the girl ahd the nerve to say we did check it!!! Well if you did WHY was it green beans and mashed potatoes INSTEAD Of Wedges and Slaw??????? Last Time I go here!! LAZY and RUDE!!!!

Yelp
Just an OK chicken place that I had yesterday afternoon. I do like the spiciness of the chicken that's what my favorite parts of Lee's this is usually a three or four star environment. Today I will give them a free the chicken itself did not have a whole lot of meat on it unfortunately a lot of grading but it's still pretty good

Yelp
We Found the Best Potato Wedges around! I have never been to Lee's Famous Recipe before, but ValuMarket closed down their deli at 6:00, so we decided to try Lee's around the corner on Poplar Level. Everything was great original Chicken and tenders. mac snd cheese were very good. Only they forgot to add our honey mustard & buffalo sauce, but we had some at home. We will be Going back

Yelp
No white gravy for livers and country fried steak. Now how dumb is that Very disappointed.

Yelp
Ok where do I begin, eating Lee's was a rollercoaster ride, mostly highs but some lows, let's talk about it. I'll first begin by saying that if you go to Lee's Famous Chicken and don't try their Apple Pie, you are literally doing yourself a disservice. That is probably the best Apple Pie I've had at any restaurant, it was crisp, brown, crunchy and it tasted like heaven. Just wow, absolutely have to try it, do yourselves a favor. On to the star of the show, the chicken. I had their 5 piece tender meal which consisted of 5 chicken tenders, I chose two sides of Mac n cheese and potato wedges. The chicken was maybe a 3 out of 5. The biggest thing going for it was the portion nice and value and it did have some good flavor but the outer crust wasn't crunchy but that's a huge preference so some people will think differently but overall the flavor definitely was there. I wasn't a big fan of their ranch, it was a little strong. The potato wedges also had good flavor but they were a little soggy. The Mac n cheese was fantastic, it was simple yet flavorful and tasted great. The biscuit was ok, the flavor was good but again it was a tad bit soggy. 4 stars because their chicken had good flavor, and because their Apple Pie literally had me in love while I was eating it. This place is worth it just for their Apple Pie. Improving the biscuit, the potato wedges and maybe crunching up the outer crust of the chicken would definitely make this place a 5.

Yelp
I was so excited to move back to KY so I could eat at Lee's again but unfortunately all 3 experiences at this location have been horrible. Chicken was cold and dry each time (even at peak hours) and the latest visit even the mashed potatoes and gravy were off. I'm not even sure how you mess that up...I worked at Lee's in high school and all you have to do is add hot water! Nonetheless, both the mashed potatoes and gravy looked curdled and did not taste as they should. I guess I'll have to go all the way across town to try a different location. I've given this one enough chances.

Yelp
This was my first time at this restaurant. I bought chicken wings, breast, and chicken strips. I got everything hot. The wings and breasts were absolutely delicious. It's by far the best fried chicken I've had in Louisville. It was crispy and full of flavor. The chicken strips were ok. I also tried their fried Oreo cookies. It was my first time having that and it was good. Lastly, the customer service was exceptional. I will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
We ate in and the service was AMAZING! Staff was friendly and they checked in periodically and the food was amazing. If you're eating here make sure to get the wedges, they're delicious

Yelp
The food is ALWAYS great!! Always! Came in to eat and the clerk was having a Dante attitude day of "im not even supposed to be here today" She was neutral to my husband but then tried to close the check without seeing me in front of her and said is that it as she hit total. I ordered after and she was a straight up bruha and I didn't appreciate her attitude at me. My husband and I discussed why she would be kept after that horrible interaction with us and everyone else before and after us, while we ate and her shift manager took her off the front cashier and made her clean. She became even more incensed! She was banging her broom against the chairs and table and moving tables by scraping them across the floor with a horrible noise escaping from the table. She kept noticing that we were taking and then would make more noise as we did. It was super great** so her noise made the manager come back and threaten to write her up for her behavior she wasn't having that and had to yell across the dining room why didn't you call so and so and so and so?? I am thinking of quitting now!!? then again he came back after helping the last guest at the counter and took her outside. She came back in to continue cleaning with a better attitude coming from her. All this to say I applaud the manger that took the time to recognize the issue and be professional and deal with it outside of customer view and eves dropping. We were done and wanted to get refills and she walked right past us to help the other boy who wasn't ordering food. The manager came up and asked what was needed. Refills. He was polite and calm even though it became over the top for a bit, customer wise. We will be back- but beware of bad attitude lady! (** is the notation for sarcasm font)

Yelp
The good is good. One of the best places to get chicken livers. We sat and ate inside and the floor smelled like bleach but also like the mop they used was put into the dirty water bucket. Chicken is always good. I'm not usually disappointed. I think they've done something different to the cole slaw. It's much better than it used to be. The green beans are also good as well as the potato wedges. I just want a clean smell so I can stay and eat happily.

Yelp
Lee's has the best liver dinner. Customer service was okay. I received my meal quick and hot. I will definitely be back for another liver dinner

Yelp
Excellent chicken better than kfc in my opinion. Wedges are pressure cooked biscuits are homemade. Chicken is excellent coating and all. A gallon of tea with the meals are ideal.

Yelp
We stopped by today at the drive-through around 2:PM which was not a busy time. Communication through the speaker trying to place our order was a joke. The girl couldn't get our order right. Had to repeat it twice and it still wasn't right. One order was a 3 piece chicken dinner all dark meat plus an extra chicken thigh. Second order was a 3 piece chicken strip dinner. When we got home the order was soooo wrong! We ended up getting 2 3 piece chicken strip dinners with 2 thighs. The girl at the drive-through was not friendly at all and never cracked a smile. The chicken tenders tasted like someone had poured a salt shaker on them. When we picked one of the boxes up the bottom fell out of it and the baked bean cup cracked and baked beans went flying everywhere. Our dogs had a field day with that, LOL. We stop at this location often and have never had a complaint with the service or food. Today was a totally different experience. We will have to think twice before going to this location again based on today's experience!
