The Best Chinese Restaurants in the Twin Cities | Eater Twin Cities

"Legendary Spice — formerly of the Lao Sze Chuan restaurant group, now linked to a Chengdu, China-based restaurant — focuses on classic Szechuan cuisine. The vast menu spans seafood, pork, beef, chicken, and vegetarian dishes, but the highlights are among the Szechuan cold appetizers (preserved duck egg with chili pepper, sliced beef and maw, etc.) and the Chengdu local favorites (spicy mao cai, tea-smoked duck, Szechuan crawfish, etc.)." - Eater Staff

Shawn was our server! All our staff were very friendly and helpful! Shawn was especially friendly and welcoming. They accommodated our party when we were running late to our reservation. The menu was a little confusing, but our server was very helpful. It was our first time here and there is a lot of food selection in different flavors to choose from. We came here for a goodbye party for one of our coworkers last minute, and it was super great. I will definitely recommend this to anybody who is looking for a place for a big party along with a nice calming vibe. I am not a big hot pot person, but this was pretty good. I love the chicken wings and how the seasoning tasted along with the sesame balls. I will be returning!

Google
Great atmosphere and a large variety of all you can eat hot pot options. Celebrated a birthday and had super helpful and welcoming service! Would 10/10 recommend this place to anyone, what are you waiting for? GO GET HOT POT.

Google
From the moment we walked in, the staff were friendly and welcoming. The atmosphere was cozy. perfect for a hotpot night with friends or a casual date. The ingredients were super fresh, and there was a huge variety of meats, veggies, noodles, and sauces to choose from. We got the dual broth and both were rich and flavorful. The spicy broth had a real kick but wasn’t overwhelming. Service was quick and attentive, and they kept everything well-stocked throughout the meal. Definitely one of the best hotpot spots around. I’ll be back soon!

If you're looking for a fun spot for friends and family, this is the hot pot place for you! Being this is my very first time experiencing such a restaurant I must say I was very impressed! The service was very helpful and the food was absolutely delicious! I couldn't believe how much I ate! ! If you are going here, you better come with an appetite! They will not disappoint!

Google
Had a great time at this AYCE hot pot place! We chose the hotpot buffet option. The ingredients were fresh, the broth was really good (my personal favorite is tomyum), and there was a solid variety of meats, seafood, and veggies to choose from. The staff was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed since this is our first time. Overall, a cozy, casual spot that’s perfect for sharing a relaxed yet indulgence meal with friends. Would definitely come back ☺️

Google
Went for a friends birthday- perfect for large groups. We were able to coordinate food for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. Staff was extremely helpful with the menu and ordering process. Lots of great options for hot pot additions. A great place for drinks too!

Google
We came here with a large party to celebrate a birthday and had the best time! They had great options for everyone, even our vegetarians had so many options to choose from! Shawn was our amazing waiter and explained all the options with amazing and helpful detail. We were all able to choose the buffet or hot pot - we even had two members order specific menu items and were able to pay separately from the buffet/hot pot option. The ambiance is amazing with a great atmosphere for any age or group! They even had chicken nuggets for kids ready to order. The cute robots add a little bit more fun to the whole experience! We got popsicles at the end included too! We will definitely be back!

Google
We enjoyed an all-you-can-eat hot pot experience. Our selection of broths included half Tom Yum and half beef tallow, both of which were delicious. The server was attentive and provided helpful information.

Yelp
We've been here twice now and both times the restaurant has been great quality, great service, and a lot of fun. We like that it's buffet style and you can try new things, they have a large variety of different things so plenty to choose from. Sauce station is cool too. The staff have always been friendly. If we're going to do hot pot all you can eat, we're going to come here.

Yelp
We were driving around st. Paul late one evening looking for something to eat. We were surprised alot of restaurants close at 10pm, so we headed towards university area. Legendary spice was lit and open until 1am. They have hot pot only option $45 or combination of hot pot and everything on their menu $50. That includes dim sum and chinese food. I chose the tom yum broth, was pretty tasty. And the sauce station to create the dipping sauce. The meats and veggies are in the back, the meats are packed individually. I was surprised to see this, quite unique and sanitary. You can go back for more meats and veggies. They have pre-made Boba drinks as well in the fridge. The server is very helpful guiding us to everything and refill our broth.

Tong L.

Yelp
The environment was clean and modern, with individual burners at each table and plenty of space to enjoy your meal without feeling cramped. Bonus points for offering free snacks, fruits, and ice cream after the meal!

Yelp
I came here twice, because it was very good and worth the price! We normally get two types of broth, mushroom flavor and the spicy one. If it gets too spicy, you can take out the spices and add more water, fixable. They have a separate section of meat and vegetables in the fridge and freezer. At least we know they are fresh and you can select whichever one you want. I enjoyed the sauce station, make your or you can follow their suggested list. Highly recommend. Parking maybe a pain to find one because it is next to campus. Enjoy!

Yelp
Great food and great portions. The waitress Amanda was the best.. she was very energetic and friendly and provided great service. The place is decorated so cute. They provide a great variety of food options. Every dish I ordered was freshly made and very good. I highly recommend giving this place a try. They have late hours which is nice do a late dinner. Great for friends hanging out or just going for a drink. They also have a full bar. I enjoyed my experience and will be returning.

Yelp
We tried a few of the broths between a group of us, which was a great variety we would try again. A great variety of meat, veggies, and noodles to satisfy multiple people and allergies. Overall, amazing food, amazing company, and highly recommend!!

Larry X.

Yelp
All you can eat hot pot and bbq. Price is good. However, the meat is frozen with small amount. You have to go back and forth so may times. The quality of meat is tough. Service is good
google avatar

Bimbola O.

Yelp
The overall food and experience was on point. The robot was an adorable addition and the bbq was so good.

Yelp
Very delicious food, all you can style with hotpot. Amazing customer service, they were extremely kind, especially Nandi! The decor is beautiful is as well with a nice and welcoming ambiance!

Yelp
Food was amazing! Staff were very friendly and attentive and ordering system was quite simple and streamlined. Me and my family got the all you can eat combo and we ordered a non spicy and their spiciest soup in a split bowl. The spiciest was super spicy but still tasty. I don't think our family could handle though lol. The staff provided solutions for the very spicy soup which was very helpful. 10/10 would come again. Atmosphere was very welcoming and calm and had a very bright and colorful space.

Yelp
It was good service and ambience but I'll adjust the review for food after I eat. I will update.

Sara X.

Yelp
I'm was so disappointed tonight. My boyfriend and I have tried a few hotpot places and this has to be the least favorite. The spicy broth was wayyyyy to spicy - I couldn't even eat any of the food I cooked in the broth and the bbq options were over seasoned. Our server was very helpful and attentive to our table though. Our water jug was always full. Sesame Balls were good. Probably won't be returning.

Yelp
Terrible experience at Legendary Spice Hot Pot yesterday! We had a big group with some dietary restrictions (veg, non-pork) so we ordered accordingly, keeping veg and meat broths separate. Then we learn that they were refilling our broths with bone broth even in the veg. This was frustrating as we had clearly explained the restrictions. We brought this up to the manager Eric, since we had already informed them of the restrictions and he proceeded to call the cops on us because he said he didnt know what to do. We were hoping to get some of the meals comped or at the very least, an apology. But we got neither. And he even tried blaming it on his waiter. No accountability! Manager Eric was not considerate in people's religious and dietary beliefs. This guy should not be manager and does not respect his customers. On top of it all, he had the audacity to charge 20% gratuity. We appreciate these police officers hearing our side and mediating the situation, however it should have never gotten to this point.

Heather K.

Yelp
For our first time at hot pot this place was good! lots of options on the all you can eat. IPad ordering didnt seem to send through everything and could get confusing. cute little place on the inside as far as decorations and lighting go!

Yelp
Love the skewers here! Another one that's a favourite of mine is the juicy pork and shrimp dumplings (aka xiao long bao)! I love it that they open till slightly past midnight so it's great for those needing a late night snack:)

Yelp
OVERALL: Tasty hot pot place! A little pricier than others, but you get more variety. PRICE: It's $45/person for AYCE. Note, they only do AYCE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. BROTH: If you don't already know, the broth is make it break when it comes to hot pot. Typically I get the spicy broth, but here they kick it up a notch. There is no Minnesota spicy option here so make sure to warn friends. I'd recommend getting one of the bone broths or mushroom broth and then adding in spice. Their base level "mild" for the beef spicy is a 6-7 on the heat scale for me. It was SO flavorful though. FOOD: With the AYCE you got to choose from all the typical hot pot items as well as barbecue, dim sum and appetizers. We ordered a couple of pieces from each. I loved the dim sum options and it was definitely worth paying extra (in comparison to their other restaurant Legendary Spice around the corner ) to have these options. You got them yourself from the fridge, and we stocked up on the meats, and my favorite the enoki mushrooms. We definitely got our money's worth, so just go in with the right expectations! SERVICE: The service was so helpful. They explained the process and also our ordered food came very quickly. They also made sure to top off our hot pot when it started to get low. They were also accommodating when the spice level was too hot for the broth, and swapped us out for some lower heat ones. They went above and beyond.

Yelp
Best place to get takeout dimsum at midnight on Christmas. Staff is always friendly, but I have only been there around midnight on Christmas 2 different years. Food is good and made fresh!

Hengkang W.

Yelp
I had hot pot with my friend on Friday. The food was delicious and the service was so great!

Yelp
This *WAS* my favorite go-to hot pot in Minneapolis until this genuinely upsetting experience. Whoever this new manager is for this location, HE IS NOT FIT FOR MANAGEMENT. After we had informed our waiter that half of our table was vegetarian/non-pork consuming, we had ordered the mushroom broth only to have them REFILL OUR SOUP WITH PORK. After approaching management to try to fix the situation, the police were called even though there was no sort of instigation. Manager didn't even want to speak to us or have a real conversation about it, just immediately called the police. The officers tried to get them to rectify the situation, but in the end we had to get an itemized reciept and file a dispute with our credit card company. Completely incompetent manager.. what kind of restaurant calls the police on their customers when theres a problem with the food??
google avatar

Mia R.

Yelp
I wish I could give it a 0 This is based off only the sesame chicken I ordered at $20 through a delivery service, they had a special so it was buy 1 get 1 The chicken is more breading than chicken and the sauce has something extra that takes away from the flavor with no heat at all. If you're thinking of ordering sesame chicken, don't

Yelp
A very good all you can eat hot pot experience. Great selection of meats, vegetables and soups. Service was excellent . Recommend!

Chi P.

Yelp
I did the all you can eat hot pot, which was a terrible decision. It took a good 15 minutes after I ordered my soup base for it to come out (I will say that they do have a lot of soup bases to choose from, but you get charged for it on top of the AYCE price). The server definitely forgot because another one stopped by and asked if I had ordered my soup base yet and then brought it within 3 minutes. You get the meats, vegetables and noodles from fridges yourself but this was where the problem came in! Almost everything was out (with the exception of some random meats and fish balls). Every vegetable was out besides one mushroom tray I was able to grab. They said that they would be restocking the fridge, but not one additional item was added to the fridge in the hour + that I was there. I also asked 3 different people for noodles (a simple instant ramen noodle) and was first told that they would put some in the fridge and then was even told they'd bring it to my table. Not surprisingly, no noodles. They list sooo many items to choose from, but there was basically nothing in stock. The manager was a nice guy and told me at the end of my meal that there were a bunch of new people working in the kitchen (not exactly sure how that affects running out of food). However, the servers were the least helpful people I've ever seen in a restaurant. Just incredibly lazy, hanging out on their phones behind the bar. One was supposed to come right back with the noodles but walked back to the kitchen only to return to his bar hang out position without even so much as a glance in my direction. I never write reviews but I want people to know what they're getting into before going. I'm sure this place would be pretty good if they actually had any food items to hot pot with (it could potentially be a 4 or 5 star, but even 2 stars would be too generous when there's literally nothing to eat hot pot with and the servers are living on another planet). The price is also pretty wild since you get charged for the soup base and the dipping sauce bar on top of the stayed all you can eat price.

Luke E.

Yelp
The food and service were really good, and their Asian food is legit. Their digital menu is extensive, so best to have an idea on what craving before you sit down. The decor was a cool Asian fusion.

Cheung J.

Yelp
This place was totally not worth the value, neither food nor service. We came to have a hotpot while a so-called all-u-can -eat buffet only have fewer options on hotpot stuff and cost us 70$ /pp. This is insane.
google avatar

Wayman J.

Yelp
The managemnt was awesome. Very helpful in explaining the process. Food and experience was great. Second time here when visiting and will be back with the new buffet pricing. Robot is so cool as well
google avatar

R G.

Yelp
The restaurant just Open for few days. The table set up similar to the famous Haidilao chains. Because, it is a soft opening. They are still training many stages of crews and kitchen preparations. However , it is the only hotpot that near to the real set up of Szechuan / Chinese Hotpot. The remaining Hotpot places in twin cities are more like amateurs ( trying but can not committed to doing it properly. Their meat slices looked either came from frozen sections in the Asian supermarkets or couldn't effort to slice them correctly. This restaurant actually has Meat Slicer. It is still far from running as Haidilao's In many elements. I have to give them a thumb's up for trying. The service crews are very good already. Just need attention to the Spice Stations , no correct / proper labelings. The ordering system look like still figuring out how to.
google avatar

Megen L.

Yelp
Great place for a late night hoot pot when everything else is closed but not my favorite hot pot place. Service is ok, food selection is ok, and pretty expensive compared with other ayce stores laces.
google avatar

Sara O.

Yelp
Food was good, our server was kind, had to flag them down most of the time, not a big deal. The server explained everything well. We had a very fun time and did the all you can eat, much better value than ordering al la carte. However, the owner or manager came in on a rampage berating employees because (I think) the phone was off. (We called ahead to make a reservation and just went ahead and came anyhow). It's super rude and unprofessional to treat your staff like that - regardless of the reason. Yelling at them in front of the whole dining room, made the end of our meal pretty uncomfortable for us and other patrons.

Yasmine V.

Yelp
Good food and nice quick service. Nice environment! They changed their prices and restaurant style since the last time we came, but overall solid meal.
google avatar

Xiaohai Z.

Yelp
10/5/2022 - I am compelled to leave a negative review: the manager publicly threw a tirade against his waiter while everyone is eating, with complete disregard for his customers and his employees. The food is not bad, but the manner by which that the manager/owner treats his customers and his employees is deplorable.

Taylor M.

Yelp
I wish I could give zero stars. Came in with a group of 12+, many of whom had serious dietary restrictions. We ordered different broths, both meat and vegetarian, pork and non-pork, and the wait staff knew this. After a while the staff came over to fill up all the pots with what we assumed was hot water or a veggie broth. Nope. Turns out it was pork broth. When we brought this up to the manager and said we had multiple people who were vegetarians/halal/etc. he wouldn't rectify the situation at all except to offer a 10% discount, which after the mandatory 18% gratuity charged is a joke. When we said that wasn't acceptable the manager immediately CALLED THE COPS because he said he couldn't do anything else. He later said that it was his first day as manager so he thinks he'd get fired if he comped that big of a meal?? Either way, not our fault and it's common practice to comp meals if someone screws up. If ANYONE has ANY kind of dietary restriction, I would stay far away from this place. Also, if you have any issues with your order be prepared for them to get the police involved.

Adam M.

Yelp
I ordered the spicy noodles with spare rib and they gave me something entirely different. It included only egg and bok choy in a soy based broth. They completely got my order wrong.

Faraaz K.

Yelp
Food was inedible Service was terrible. Menu had items they didn't make anymore and server wasn't aware of what was available and what was not available. Server undercharged us then made us pay a separate bill on our way out. Forgot three items we ordered. Still charged us for the item they didn't carry anymore. I have never had a worse experience the atmosphere was made worse. They need to close earlier if this is the type of service they offer after 11
google avatar

Allen H.

Yelp
Not good. I would avoid this location and go to the AYCE location a block away. The selection of proteins + vegetables is severely lacking here, and the pricing is intentionally obscure. It seems like they calculate the total at the end by counting up the numbers of skewers and trays you had - we had a nasty surprise at the end when each person's meal cost upwards of $45 pre-tip. No one in our group was full at the end of the meal; some of made plans to go to McDonald's. The service was also almost nonexistent - we had to ask them to bring us water and cups, and one of the meat plates we ordered never showed up. Do yourself a favor and go to the Huron location - this one is ass, my dude

Jennie G.

Yelp
My experience: I normally like to leave a good review but unfortunately this is not the case. This was my first time here visiting from out of town and I'd have to say that I was very disappointed in their service. I've asked the waitress twice for ice for my water and she didn't get me ice until I asked again. I was also disappointed to hear that my 18 month old baby was going to be charged $10 just to dine in and eat until I had to let the waitress he's not going to eat. My boyfriend ordered fried chicken wings, assuming it would come in 6-8 pieces since it was $12 for the wings. But when the order came out, there were only small 4 wings! We were shock at how expensive the wings were!!! The menu should've let it's customers know that for the fried chicken wings it only comes in 4. We've expressed to the waitress how it did not let customers know on the menu that for 4 wings it was going to be $12. She just said sorry and brushed it off, then walks away to the bar and sit down and was on her phone. The food: The pork broth was not bad. Not really a fan of the Tom Yum broth. Something in that soup was overpowering the broth. Furthermore, the selections of meat is very little and most of them had nothing but fats. The bbq on the stick tasted horrible. I felt like I was eating cumin by itself. It had a strong smell and after taste to it. Everything was pricey. We were being charged literally for everything, from the all you can eat, to the soup base to making the dipping sauce. I've had other hot pots and it's ridiculous to see that this place charges every little thing and it's overpriced than most other hot pots I've been to. I do not believe I will come back for. Manager needs to retrain their servers and the menu needs to be a little more specific when customers order certain items on the menu.

stevs s.

Yelp
A refund is just issued. So I'm upgrading it to 4 stars One star off for price and the vegetable. Overall it's Ok.
google avatar

Aimee S.

Yelp
I work all over the states and eat hot pot every that has it. I have been to Le Pot several times and had great experience. Here they charge you 2.75 for a trip to the sauce bar, $13 for one small red plate of meat, $5 for ramen noodles. It's crazy.
google avatar

Liu J.

Yelp
Good kabob! Also good value for buffet menu and drinks! Their hotpot is also good and also has the buffet option.
google avatar

Michael D.

Yelp
I am used to AYCE hotpot, and this was definitely not that. The food was okay. We had to go to the fridge to pick our options. Each item had a stick, which is important when you are ready to pay. We had to ask for trays of lamb and beef; I believe we got 6 trays total. At the end of the night when we were ready to pay, the server counted all of the sticks and all we ordered. In all, the total amount came out to around $215 for 5 people. Usually AYCEs are around $30 per person, so that would've been $150. Definitely would not recommend if you want to get your money's worth.
google avatar

September H.

Yelp
The food is OK??? It's a little too pricey, at this time in our lives. Well I recommend it, not sure. It all depends on if you like small portions of meat for the hot pot, that they charge you like 75 to a dollar apiece, if you're going to have a hot pot at least make the pieces big enough for us to enjoy. The small portions that you put on each (stick) is not sufficient. I don't think I'll be going back here, again. My family and I went to go celebrate my son birthday. For eight people, six adults and two children, our bill wind up being, $410.00. There isn't any price of front of what you're gonna pay for It's skewer, so basically they can charge you anything they want and you wouldn't know, nor was it explain to us what was going to cost. Not their fault should've asked, but I will not be recommend this place or go back, nooootttt!!!

Steven H.

Yelp
We have been here many times, the food is fresh and the service is good, For me, this is the best hot pot around here

Lenée O.

Yelp
Food was awful. Couldn't get hot pot because of the "after 11" rule. Service was also terrible. The servers couldn't care less that you are there. Ambiance was terrible. Do not recommend.

Senida P.

Yelp
Worst experience we have ever had anywhere. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. We decided to come here for a birthday dinner. We told the waiter that we had dietary restrictions because some people in the group didn't eat pork and some were vegetarian. We made sure to make that clear. Come to find out half way through our dinner, that the "manager" was refilling our soup bases with pork broth. When we approached him (calmly) to ask him about it he proceeded to not want to talk about it and walked outside. He came back in and said that we can talk to the cops once they arrive. Apparently he can't make a decision as a manager on what to do without calling the cops. This guy should not be in management at all. No apology was given and on top on that they charged a 18% gratuity fee on our bill. I recommend not wasting your time or money here.

André A.

Yelp
We got DoorDash from here last Friday, we ordered 3 orders of dumplings and only received 1 order! We called to let them know of the mistake they made, and they just said there's nothing they can do about it. Yikes, terrible service and a terrible job at messing up the order. And for the food that did come... it wasn't that good. Super mid food, I'd only recommend if it's late at night and you need something to eat. But you'd have to go in person since their delivery could forget half of your order.
google avatar

Zac F.

Yelp
This place was awful. I was in the bathroom all night after eating here, and we left half the food on the table because it was absolutely terrible.

Fred S.

Yelp
In addition to the misleading pricing, our food was served in plates that looked forty plus yo and washed maybe twice since then. The hot pot itself contained brass which leeches lead under high heat which just seems irresponsible to consistently use. Definitely not worth it
google avatar

Nicholas P.

Yelp
Lee the server was great. It was our first time having hot pot and he walked us through exactly what to do. Was a great experience and if we are back in town we will be coming back.

Jaime B.

Yelp
Terrible food. Worse service. Complained about terrible food and was told 'too bad'. Never going back. All food has the same seasoning on it
google avatar

Kav T.

Yelp
Their bbq special kebabs were trash. Delivery ordered the lamb, pork spare rib, beef, and pork kebabs; could not differentiate the difference between any of them, besides the sparerib which had more "spare" rib than meat. There was barely any meat on the skewers and looked rather like jerky on a stick. Their Chinese style fried sweet potato was trash also; too greasy and salty.
