"The Spinnerei is a huge creative complex founded on the site of the former cotton mill, including more than 100 artists' studios, a potters' workshop, print studios, galleries, a cinema, an arts supply store, a Café/Restaurant, and much more. The historical industrial site was founded in 1884 and employed as many as 4000 workers at its height. Always worth a visit, you can book a tour or join in one of the seasonal “Rundgang” open houses." - Tali Bayer

"Essentially a small, self-contained village, die Spinnerei is a planned arts community that sits on the site of what was once the largest cotton mill in continental Europe."

"In the early 1900s, the Spinnerei was Europe’s largest cotton-spinning mill. Today, the 750,000-square-foot space is the epicenter of Leipzig’s artistic renaissance, housing 14 galleries, more than 100 artists’ studios (including that of famed German artist Neo Rauch), and a host of rotating exhibitions. It’s all contemporary art, all the time here, from paintings and photography to sculpture to video, with a range of German and international artists featured. The Leipzig-based Galerie EIGEN + ART, which also has an outpost in Berlin, is one of the more well-known galleries here, and always worth a look." - Liz Humphreys

Visited on a Saturday. Cold day. Ambiance was quite apocalyptic, post-war vibe. We found most galleries open, but not good art. I found one artist that was worthy a second look. Place has no charm unless you are into “Chernobyl” vibes. It has potential to become a vibrant place but far from it.

Since galleries are gathered in one place, you can see a variety of exhibitions here. It's very big, and the people are all friendly.

Galleries with eclectic art pieces. Easy to get to by tram, s-bahn, or regional train. Access to free WC when we were there.

If you're not an art fan, do not come to this place 😂 So many tiny + big galleries! Free of charge, beside one big gallery that asked for 4 euros. It was a bit disappointing that few of the galleries were close or open but didn't welcome visitors. The place is just beautiful. Take your time and try to see as much as you can before 5pm. I was exhausted but satisfied.

A really cool concept, a lovely space being used as an artist village. Einen Besuch ist es wert. The 45 minute tour is also worth it, especially if you'd like to get an overview before you start exploring yourselves.

Great area, unfortunately no cafe or bistro open in March, lot of galleries closed at the time. At least great (and huge) shop with everything artist may think about was open. But I guess during the summer (especially evenings) it must be amazing place.

Great historic landmark transform to create a vibrant and innovative culture space. There are multiple galleries and studios to discover but also a cinema, huge art supply store and some restaurants. Area is open 24h so you can explore surroundings whenever you wish.

this site was by 1907 the biggest cotton-spinning mill in continental Europe. This fascinating factory town, including workers’ homes, allotment gardens as well as the factory kindergarten, has survived intact to this day. In 1992 the then obsolete cotton-yarn factory complex has opened for redevelopment. It was mostly artists who acted as the pioneers of revitalisation here, and as a consequence the Spinnerei has become home to more than 100 studios today. In addition to the artists, the area has attracted musicians, dancers, craftspeople, architects, traders, printers, designers and many others who have have set up shops and studios in the Spinnerei. By the end of 2004, the Spinnerei had become well known as a centre for artistic production, today the Spinnerei is home to 14 galleries and exhibitions. The Spinnerei is an authentic, historic factory complex which has embraced art as the new way of using the old factory buildings for a new purpose. The site is part of the district of Lindenau. There are displays of all kind of work, both by locals and art students in an area which has enjoyed great rejuvenation. If you are looking for an alternative place where to relax, enjoy art and chill over some snacks or drinks, you will be delighted of all the surprises you will find here! To get there go by tram number 14 and get of at Plagwitz or take the S-Bahn S1 to Leipzig-Plagwitz.
