The 26 Best Restaurants in Anchorage, Alaska - Eater

"It’s a five-hour flight between Anchorage and Honolulu and many Alaskans have deep connections to Hawai‘i, which is why Anchorage loves Islander cuisine. This casual lunch counter in an East Anchorage outdoor mall offers the classics – shoyu, spicy masago, sweet and spicy poke – served fresh daily with rotating specials. Look out for fresh malasadas from the Wiki-licious malasada shop. This is a great place to stop if you’re heading north on the Glenn Highway." - Julia O'Malley

The only reason there is color besides the tuna and 3 edamame in this photo is because I put soy sauce on the rice. no flavor at all. Literally tastes like chopped up tuna and rice. No seasoning or anything! It’s definitely edible and it won’t break the bank. just Meh. Honestly $16 at BK is better spent. Won’t be back. To the owner I say good luck and god speed.

Google
Great and I mean Great Poke. Staff was super friendly and helpful. Nice variety of Poke choices to choose from and freshly made. Flavors were vibrant and filling. Prices were reasonable and portions sizes exactly as advertised. Also their Hawaiian ice was just as on point. Nice large serving is great for sharing with family and friends. If you want to find a little slice of Hawaii in the up north of Alaska, this is the spot. Highly recommend in the area and looking for a nice eatery in the area.

Google
I cannot believe nobody told me about this place before now, it's excellent. Easily the best poke I've had in Alaska. The shaved ice is excellent, but for my taste next time I'm going to ask them to make it a little less sweet (if possible). They also have a great assortment of snacks and treats sent over from Hawaii (coconut balls FTW). Lots of flavors and choices to choose from, and excellent value for the cost. I'll be back many times to eat my way through the menu.

Google
Came acoss this little poke and shaved ice shop while driving around the area. I ordered da Spicy Furikake Bowl and da Californian and both was so fresh and onolicious. The service was fast and filled with Aloha. I will definitely be stopping here whenever I am in Anchorage to visit my daughter!

Alexander K

Google
Seared ahi was phenomenal!! The California poke was good a little creamy but the rice and portions are great! Super refreshing!

Ivan W

Google
It ain't Foodlands but it's pretty darn good poke. Props for actively giving discounts to military folks.

Google
The musubi was really good. The poke was okay. Will come back to try it out again.

Google
I respect it… kinda.. idk.. if youve ever had a good poke bowl from somewhere in the lower 48, then the bowls here wont please you. 22 dollars for a meal that i honestly had a hard time eating. There was hardly any sauce on the fish, and i found myself diggin for rice cause the flavor of the fish was just not there. Ugh.

Yelp
Lei's Poke Stop is located right next to Starbucks with parking available in the plaza it is in. My husband was thinking about doing poke for dinner so we ended up coming here, based on the Yelp reviews. We came last Friday, around 4:30 pm. We were greeted by an employee behind the counter. When we came in, I was surprised that there was no poke to see behind the display case. I had asked the employee if they were out of poke and she said no she has to make it. That disappointed me because true poke is marinaded in a sauce that one makes and not just having sauce dumped on top of it and served to you. But since we were already here, we decided to order the following: Shoyu Poke Bowl, $15- Served in a small styrofoam square container, a portion of poke, a large scoop of rice and about 6 edamame (in the pod). The shoyu poke was rather very salty and the rice was hard and served at room temperature. It is most likely that white rice was old. Hawaiian Poke Bowl, $15- Also served in a square styrofoam container, the poke is served with a large scoop of white rice that was also hard and at room temperature. And not surprised, but the poke was also very salty too. ---------------------------- (Total= $30) Very disappointed with the level of service and the food. Not worth the price we paid and am sad to say this was probably one of the worse poke that I have ever had. I would never come back here.

Yelp
I was born and raised on 'Oahu, and hands down, this is the best poke in Anchorage. As a transplant to Alaska, this surely hits the spot! The fish is always prepared fresh to order and the portion size is comparable to price of fresh fish! My personal favorite is the spicy furikake, add avocado. Can't go wrong!

Yelp
I was disappointed with my most recent experience at the Tikahntu location. I had great experiences at the midtown location (formerly called Aloha Stop and Shop) as mentioned in my previous review, as well as the Gambell location that unfortunately closed earlier this year. I ordered online and arrived at the scheduled time. The boy at the register seemed confused when I said I was picking up an online order. He asked if it was through GrubHub and if it was for the correct location, so I explained that I ordered through their website and put the pickup location in the comments as instructed. I still got my food, just had to wait a little longer than expected. I ordered a spicy furikake salmon bowl. For some reason, Lei's is perpetually out of salmon, so I got ahi tuna instead. This was a problem at other locations too. You'd think salmon would be easier to get in Alaska. The fish wasn't as fresh as it was in the past. The portion size seemed a little smaller, but it's still enough for a satisfying meal. I like the spicy mayo sauce and the furikake seasoning. I hope this was just an off day and they can figure out whatever issues they may have with online ordering. I'd recommend ordering inside if you come by here.

Yelp
I've been craving true Hawaiian poke, and I wasn't disappointed! You can buy it by the bowl with rice or by the pound to take home for later. The portion of tuna was huge for the bowls! I was pleasantly surprised at how generous they were! They aren't doing any in-person dining yet, only takeout. They do deliver but not on-post.

Yelp
I laaavaa this ono poke & Hawaiian food spot. After living in Hawai'i for a long time I was super bummed that I wouldn't get all my favorite foods but Lei's totally has me covered. My kids get a musibi and shave ice, always good just like they had in HI. I usually get the plate lunch of whatever they have, some times Kalau pork&cabbage, roast pork, everything I've had is very very flavorful and they give plenty of it. My favorites pokes are the sweet & spicy (with extra sauce on the rice ) & the Hawaiian. I'm picky about my raw fish, very few places give choke sashimi grade soft kine but this place does and I'm grateful for it! Every piece is soft and has good texture. 10/10 will be back.

Yelp
Usually have had a good experience at this place however ordered the spicy furikake bowl. The rices was under cooked and the fish must have been bad. Have been sick all day since I eat hear. This fish had a little smell to it and definitely upset my stomach.
google avatar

Melinda M.

Yelp
SAFETY RISK Adding my review here as well: I developed severe food poisoning after consuming Da Hawaiian poke bowl from this restaurant's food truck when I was visiting the Anchorage Museum. DO NOT RISK IT. I was vomiting for 8 hours straight twice an hour with stomach cramps. I am positive this was the place as I had no other food that day than a bowl of cereal and I was throwing up bits of furikake into my hotel toilet. I have reported this before to the store owner who is not taking responsibility and my next action is to go to the USDA in order to prevent this from happening to anyone else.
google avatar

Daniella A.

Yelp
The poke here is top notch. Definitely a great taste of Hawaii in Anchorage! The fish is always fresh, and the portions are generous on the bowls. I also have ordered poke by the pound, which is decently priced at $17/pound for ahi or salmon. My favorite flavors are the spicy masago, spicy furikake, and da Sweet & spicy. I have only tried their ahi and salmon poke, but they offer a great variety of seafood options. They also have a bunch of Hawaiian snacks, and sell malasadas from wiki wiki at this location on Fridays. Great Aloha spirit from the owners, and I am always extremely happy with my poke! If you are looking to get a taste of the islands in Alaska then look no further than Lei's! They also operate the food truck Da Poke Man Express so you can get poke at a festival around town (when those hopefully resume again this upcoming summer).
google avatar

Tina V.

Yelp
Good portion size and bite sized chunks! Delicious and fresh. Fast service and friendly personnel. Makes me miss the island!
google avatar

Harriet D.

Yelp
Oh no- I see one other person had an issue like mine. Maybe raw fish was risky and I take responsibility for that choice but my partner and I both got sick after this. I haven't made a review before but you guys should maybe look into that!

Yelp
We were in the area from Portland and happened to notice Lei's in a busy, large shopping area. We enjoyed the 2 types poke they had and the lady mentioned they were out of a couple of items, but expected them to arrive from the islands within the following week. Parking is plentiful. Service is good. Product is fantastic. We'd definitely come again next them we are in Anchorage. Mahalo!

Hector R.

Yelp
The tuna is delicious, they had many different styles. Amazing service, the whole family was super friendly :)
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Went to the Midtown location! The workers there are very friendly. The food taste amazing! Ended up getting the mini garlic chicken with bacon fried rice. The chicken had great flavor and also a crispy texture. The 2 for 5$ musubis are pretty great also. Now the thing I actually went there for was the poke. I ended up getting the shoyu and the Hawaiian with Limu. I would say for getting poke in Alaska it is actually really. The flavor of the Hawaiian with limu poke is very tasty. Highly recommend going to the midtown/downtown location!
google avatar

Celeste D.

Yelp
I had high hopes but ordered a lot assuming it would be great. I gave my food away could not eat it.
google avatar

Will C.

Yelp
Been a satisfied customer ever since they were the "Hawaiian Stop n Shop" in midtown location. I couldn't contain my happiness when I rediscovered them in the Tikahtnu shopping center. The poke has always been consistently great, handmade to order. Good portion size as well. Definitely my fave poke place in all of Anchorage. P.S. They offer military discount! 10/10 would recommend
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
If you love raw marinated crab come here, always great food. I dunno what these folks are taking about.
google avatar

Chelsea G.

Yelp
I stopped into Lei's poke stop when I went into Anchorage for a shopping trip and am so happy to have found them! I love poke, but tend to be skeptical of certain places. I took a risk here and am happy that I did because not only was it super quick and fresh but it was delicious! Pricing is reasonable and was happy to support a local business in Anchorage!
google avatar

Leah D.

Yelp
Our office reached out about catering an event at fairly short notice. They were very responsive and happy to answer all our questions. Payment was easy and delivery was free since it was over $100. We tipped the driver generously though. I recommend Lei's Poke Stop anytime you want to have authentic, delicious, delivered hot food for your catered event! They supplied chop sticks, forks, napkins and Aloha soysauce (the most superior brand, ask around!) thank you to Lei and Tasha and the whole crew! All our employees were extremely happy!
google avatar

Trudy B.

Yelp
I had been wanting to try this place for awhile. When we first walked in, it was a punch in the face with the smell of bleach or cleaning products of some kind. I don't like walking into a place I'm going to eat at and all I smell is cleaning products. The poke bowl was very good, the service was good, we should have gotten to go so the smell didn't conflict with eating.
google avatar

Kristen D.

Yelp
My family and I love Lei's Poke! Fresh fish, the perfect portion sizes and super friendly staff!
google avatar

Myle D.

Yelp
Great poke! I like that they cut the fish in big pieces instead of small bits. Sweet and spicy flavor was good. However, the spicy furikake was literally drenched in way too much mayo.. it outpower the ahi taste. Service was great, the cashier girls were very friendly and welcoming. Tip: they should make pictures of the ahi and more detailed of what it looks like or will have in the flavor to choose from.
google avatar

Justin I.

Yelp
The first time I came they were cleaning up as they had already run out of fish. So I went a couple days later and unfortunately at the time they had no salmon. Bummer! Went with either 1/2 or a pound of the Spicy Masago Ahi Poke. The fish was very fresh and cut nice however I think there was a tad too much Sriracha in the sauce mix. Would prefer it to taste more like the Japanese style mayo with a hint of spiciness. Should be 4 stars but I like Salmon poke a lot more than Ahi tuna and that's a minus 1 star letdown! Would come back!
google avatar

Rai S.

Yelp
I ordered a combo plate at their new location on Gambell. Service was okay, wait time was good. It would have been a great first time experience visiting them if it wasn't for hair in my food. Please make your workers wear hairnets as it isn't good having someone's long hair in your food. *See included photo

Yelp
If you haven't been here, then you better remedy that. Just stopped by for the first time (12/29/2020 @ 12:40 ish) to grab something for lunch. Got the Spicy Furikake Bowl and was VERY pleased. The poke texture was perfect. The rice was wonderfully cooked. More especially, I loved the sauces and spices. I will be visiting this place again, and would suggest you try it if you like poke.
google avatar

Brennan K.

Yelp
I love this little poke spot bringing classic Hawaiian style poke to Alaska. Originally over closer to downtown sharing with wiki wiki they now have their own spot in Muldoon. Service is quick, quality is good and flavor can't be beat. I always buy a pound of either sweet and spicy or the spicy Mayo and then come home and serve it over rice with A side of edamame and pickled veggies. Can't beat that kind of fresh meal! Keep up the good work

Miranda D.

Yelp
Delicious, fresh poke and fun extras available. 10/10 for getting poke in AK. Staff has always been friendly as well.
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
Delicious and fresh! Ordered the spicy furikake with kimchi cucumbers in place of rice. Filling an very tasty. Everyone inside was so sweet! Loved it and highly recommend
google avatar

Dimitrios T.

Yelp
I was complaining to my manager for sending me to Alaska instead of Hawaii so I decided to try Hawaiian food... This was the first time I tried a poke bowl. So, much, food!! The fiswas amazing the people very helpful. Took the extra time explaining what everything is. That's what you get for dealing with the owners! The portions were humongous!!!! The place is clean, so are the restrooms. Small business, like the ones we like supporting here in Alaska. Did I mention the portions were huge!? I'll come back for sure and I'll bring friends, I have to share the portions!!
google avatar

Bev C.

Yelp
when they first opened, they were great but the last 5+ times I've gone, the orders have had issues. I hate to leave a bad review on a family run business but they've consistently disappointed us this past year.
google avatar

Lukas S.

Yelp
What a weird, but delightful little place! Kind of funny that they offer popcorn, candy, bulk ordering, and poke all in the same space. But whatever works right? And it works for them! My significant other loves a good poke bowl and craves this place often.
google avatar

William B.

Yelp
Taste is delicious. Nice lean fish and their fish to rice ratio can't be beat. I eat here twice a week. Very generous portions! Can't wait for this covid stuff to be over so I can eat here more often.
google avatar

Katherine S.

Yelp
Really awesome poke here! They are super friendly and helpful and the cashier helped me decide which poke to get. I feel it's slightly pricey for what it is, but still very good. I also wish they had a few more options to mix in like some other poke stops I've been to in the lower 48/Hawaii. You don't have a whole lot of extras/different things to add in but definitely worth coming here though if you're craving it!
google avatar

Kennly A.

Yelp
I was so excited to find this place in Alaska! Being from Hawaii, I'm super picky about my poke. I don't like Foodland poke and I wanted some flavorful, fresh fish. This place hit the spot! They were sold out of the California and shoyu poke, so I got the sweet and spicy and it was delicious! The amount of poke they give you is way more than at other places I've tried. They also sell local stuff like coconut peanut butter, jams and jellies, and coconut syrup. They even have crack seed and Li hing gummies from Lin's Market. I'm definitely going back another time before I leave here. They also have Hawaiian Sun juice! Parking is in a private lot, but go early because if they run out of fish, they close early.

Yelp
If you've found Lei's easily you are a master finder, because it's easily missed. This small poke shop is tucked quietly in Starbucks' shadow in the Tikahtnu Commons Shopping Center. It doesn't help that they don't really have a sign above their door like the rest of their neighboring businesses. Lei's is a great spot to grab a quick bite. There are great bowl options to pick from: I like the salmon or tuna shoyu style with rice or salad. Another great option is to buy your poke by the pound. You definitely get more bang for your buck this way.

Thi E.

Yelp
Lei's Poke Stop is our favorite place to get Poke in Anchorage. After living in Hawaii and having the real thing, we've found it's hard to find the real thing here. When you walk in, the place is very obviously a former frozen yogurt shop that's been converted. There isn't a lot of seating, mostly a long bench and a couple tables along the wall. It's super clean and spotless. There's also some Hawaiian snacks you can purchase including li hing mui and macadamia nut snacks. The poke is NOT ready made. This is the one beef I have with the shop--at the same time, it ensures that you can also get exactly what you want every time. The biggest downside to the poke not being readymade is that it doesn't get to marinate in the soy sauce like poke in Hawaii so it's not quite as flavorful as it could be, hence my 4-star rating. The plus side is that you can customize your poke however you want including adding extra types of fish, onions, cucumber, spiciness, etc. I do think it's strange that the Shoyu Poke doesn't naturally come with minced garlic in it as everything in Hawaii has tons of garlic in it--so you have to pay extra for that. I would also like if they would give more furikake (rice seasoning) or have an option to buy a generous side of it. My favorite is the ahi tuna shoyu poke with extra cucumbers, garlic, and extra onions. Despite these negatives I've listed, the food is still really good and the fish is always a nice healthy red, never old tuna. We have eaten here multiple times and would continue to! It's a little pricy so in my opinion it's better to just buy a pound of poke and make your own rice at home, rather than getting a combo.

Leah S.

Yelp
Third time in a week! Loved this place both locations. Brought a friend with me this time. Let me just say I think it's great that the young boy is working and taking orders, but he may need some more training. I ordered 2 Da Spicy Massago Ahi/tako bowls, that was gonna be a dollar extra fine. When he brought them out i said "hmm doesn't look like there is any massago in there" he assured me it was mixed in. there was no massago!!!! or anything else i felt like i was eating a bowl of mayo and a bit of sriracha. please focus on quality control.
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
Love love love Lei's Poke Stop. Service that makes you feel like you're at home. Relaxed environment that gives you major island feels & the food is phenomenal! Da Taegu never fails to put me in a better mood, either with rice or wonton chips.

Yelp
Craving Poke and I could not find fresh Ahi, so I visited Lei's Poke stop. It's tucked away in a a strip mall in Muldoon. The employees were very friendly and helpful. I was surprised they asked if I was a Kamaina so I could get a discount on my purchase. I told her I am and showed her my still Valid Hawaii drivers license. Normally I make my own poke and because I couldn't find fresh Ahi, I searched Yelp. Their poke looked the most legit from the places I saw. I also read other reviews to help make my decision. They have a nice selection of types of poke to suit different tastes. They also sell other local snacks, but I was there for the poke. The thing I also liked is that they mix it to order, and you can add to it. I rarely rate 5 stars, but they were very pleasant and nice, and locals from Hawaii. And the poke is Ono! (Good)!
google avatar

Katie C.

Yelp
Closest thing to Hawaii that one will find in Alaska. Amazing quality, wonderful staff, and top notch clean restaurant. If you're able to swing by in the morning, they even make Museabi! Great portion sizes for any hungry diner. They also offer Poke by the pound for those on the go. I will absolutely be returning every chance I get.

Sokau J.

Yelp
The most inviting customer service ever. They really bring the "island hospitality" to the community. Their Poke is so fresh and ridiculously good. The other items on their menu are equally delicious. They also have a good selection of Hawaiian snacks!
google avatar

Madeline B.

Yelp
No ka `oi! This shop, owned and run by Kanaka Maoli is the best place to get poke! They may not have the name "Aloha Poke" any longer, but they understand what true aloha means. If you're in Anchorage, make sure to stop here for authentic, Hawaiian poke.

Chelcee-Javon S.

Yelp
My husband and I often have our lunch dates over 2 poke bowls from Leis poke stop. Always made fresh, always ono! Friendly customer service with lots of Aloha. They never disappoint! We have ordered poke platters for our Christmas dinner last year... our dinner party enjoyed them! You can order poke bowls or order poke by the pound. Poke is top notch!
google avatar

Dane K.

Yelp
Authentic poke made by kānaka maoli, not that fake Chicago crap. Fish chunks are fresh and made with "aloha" (yes I went there) and I won't cease and desist. Lol. You can tell that the lima that made it put their souls into it. But that is to be expected by Hawaiians who love their trade. They and their poke are truly maika'i. Highly recommend this small business who will treat you like ohana
google avatar

Erik A.

Yelp
I had the chance to try out Lei's for the first time last weekend and I will DEFINITELY be back. We tried the Hawaiian which is a savory, garlicky, soy type flavor and the Sweet and Spicy which reminded me of a sweet bulgogi type of flavor. Between the two, the winner was the Sweet and Spicy! I will go back just for this!! We took the remaining sauce from the sweet and spicy and poured it into the Hawaiian to let it marinate over night. (Definitely recommend trying this!) I gave a 4/5 rating on this due to the overall experience. Walking in the door, the first thing I thought was "damn it's hot in here" which isn't something I would associate with a place that serves raw fish. It was very uncomfortable and I couldn't wait to get back outside. The service was decently quick and the person working was friendly. Like I said, I will DEFINITELY be going back to try more of what they offer!
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
So I absolutely love Poke bowls so I was excited when my friend suggested we try this place out for lunch. My friend and are are no poke bowl masters and a lot of the time I'm not sure what to order unless I see pictures. This place was great, but it was a little confusing... There was a lot of stuff on the menu that I had no idea what it was.... it would be nice with some explanation.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
Great place and the family feeling you get when you enter is awesome from the start! The food is sooooo good I recommend this place but it's family run obviously so I'd call in advance to make sure they are there.

Alexandra M.

Yelp
An insanely delicious, AUTHENTIC, and decently priced meal. My only complaint is the distance from my house. There are a lot of vacant suites at 345 W 100th, in front of Cabella's off King St :) Usually I'm not one for raw fish, but this place changed my mind! The serving size made me feel full, but not to the point where I needed a nap; I left feeling satisfied. Huge chunks of fresh fish served with a scoop of rice and edamame, that reminded me of the kind you get at the grocery store in Hawaii. The marinade isn't overwhelmingly salty like other places up here either; the onions in it were perfectly crisp. Each bite is texturally pleasing. 5/5 will be back.
google avatar

Virginie S.

Yelp
I love this shop! Their poke is great, the staff is great and it's conveniently located super close to the base! My family also love the shaved ice/snow cones!! Oh and the fresh juices are so good!!! I love this place!

Cyrus A.

Yelp
Omg!! Hands down best pokè!! Full of flavor and love!! I am not going rice so I asked to get no rice and pay a little extra to substitute the pickle cucumbers and man it was soo worth it!! Great people! Great food! Come check it out!!
