Leo's Review - Clapton - London - The Infatuation

"Before it was Leo’s, 59 Chatsworth Road has been an ice cream factory, a caff, and a biker hangout. Now, it’s a sexy and sceney Italian restaurant and bar. One where neon clogs peek out like hooves from beneath formica tables and where plates of giardiniera mimic the rainbow-coloured tiles that clad this Clapton heirloom. Some might see this as a bad thing. Others, who fantasise about €1 Italian restoration projects, may disagree. One thing is certain—Leo’s is beautiful, flawed, and seductive all at once. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Imagine someone who took a sojourn in Sardinia, raided the SSENSE sale, and returned lambrusco-drunk on Chatsworth Road—that’s Leo’s. Entering the front bar area is like stepping into an aesthete’s fantasyland. One where wood-panelled, mid-century tones, black loafers with white socks, and delightful tramezzino finger sandwiches reign supreme. A meal here has highs (the pastas) and plenty of mids (the mains), but all of it is softened by the unmistakable feeling that you’re in a fever dream of the most Sorrentino variety. The sun-dappled negronis and impeccable manicures are happy distractions to food that doesn’t quite hit the heights. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Leo’s is a restaurant that excels in 35mm moments. That first sip of fizz, a wipe of indecently fingerable 60-month aged parmesan whip, the last slurp of agnolotti broth. The menu is straightforward but its quality meanders. The chilled soup could be bathed in and carpaccio di mare is as flavourful as it is vivid. Other things are plain tepid—not least, ironically, the sea bass l’acqua pazza (in crazy water)—but then again, the walnut ice cream has every table spoon-jousting. Hackney is a crowded field when it comes to restaurants and Leo’s isn’t the best of the bunch, but it is certainly the best-looking. Couple that with an oozing plate of cicoria-stuffed cannelloni, a couple of bottles of Tuscan red, and a new Our Legacy shirt you’ve been saving for a Friday night, and it’s enough to make us happy. But if you want food to remember then it’s true—looks aren’t everything. @infatuation_london Here's what we thought of Hackney's coolest new Italian spot. Leo's ????Clapton #leosrestaurantandbar #leosclapton #restaurantsinlondon #InfatuationLondon ♬ Storytelling - Adriel Keep scrolling for the food rundown Food Rundown Giardiniera A plate of kaleidoscopic pickles is how pretty much every meal should start and it’s no different here. Fennel, peppers, carrot, and cucumber are all present and correct. Tramezzino al Vitello Tonnato This trio of finger sandwiches, though a little dear at £11, are a delightful two-biter. Aperitivo hour requires finger food—it's non-negotiable—and these porky snacks leave you wanting more. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Mullet Carpaccio, Preserved Lemon & Green Chilli Tart, fresh, and wholly enlivening, this carpaccio is one of the best dishes on the menu. The slivers of mullet are smothered in a lemon and chilli dressing that perfectly balances acidity and spice. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Agnolotti Stuffed With Rabbit a Succhittu This luscious agnolotti, all glowing yellow pasta and shimmering velvet sauce, can be sensational. The rabbit stuffing when moist and balanced with gaminess, is excellent. That said, not every bowl is identical in its depth of flavour. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Cannelloni, Cicoria & Pecorino A crowd-pleaser of the most satisfying variety. Three plump cannelloni stuffed with garlic-laden blitzed cicoria and topped with a puddle of pecorino sauce that’s been flashed under the grill. It’s gooey, it’s green, and it’s totally irresistible. Grilled Pork Loin, Braised Broad Beans Even if this plate of wafer-sliced pork doesn’t quite wow, it’s still an enjoyable main course. There’s a light, if a little insipid, meaty broth and the glowing green broad beans have a satisfying bite. Especially when combined with a bit of crackling. Wild Sea Bass L’Acqua Pazza Sea bass in crazy water is a classic Italian peasant dish that thrives in the summer. Unfortunately, this version is a little too light on flavour. The fish is moist but otherwise there’s very little else going on. photo credit: Aleksandra Boruch Walnut Ice Cream, Fresh Cream, Amalfi Lemon, Coffee Sometimes the best desserts just look like a puddle. This is one of them. The walnut ice cream—subtly flavoured but present—is bedfellows with tart dollops of lemon curd that’s all hidden under a blanket of fresh cream dusted with coffee powder. Share at your peril." - Jake Missing

Google
By some metrics, a 'greasy spoon' cafe. But it's far from greasy. A great menu, food that can exceed your expectations, atmosphere and environment more than acceptable, good service.

We tried the London Breakfast and Hangover Breakfast after a literal hangover, and boy was it a perfect way to start the morning. Everything in the breakfast set was very well-made, from the delicious eggs to the crunchy sausages to the juicy mushrooms. We came looking for a traditional English breakfast and were munificently satisfied. The Turkish staff was very friendly and the whole cafe had a very hearty atmosphere. The locals apparently enjoyed dining here, and it deserves a dedicated trip from afar nonetheless. They've also got bloody nice toast to go with the breakfast. Deserves a 5/5 without a doubt!

Have you ever felt lacking, like there's something missing? Something is wrong but you dont know what. Something you can't quite put your finger on feels sad inside of you. Well, I know what it is. And I know how to cure it. What you are, is hungry. And what you need is food. There's one man who can give it to you in a way no other can. His name is Leo. After a long and exhausting day in front of my laptop, under the crushing weight of responsibility (overfed cat). I was in the pits, man. Really down in the dumps. But as I limped through up Kingsland Road in the pouring rain, something caught my eye. The vibrant grey banner of my saviour, Leo - and his band of merry men wielding their searing hot griddle. I entered the cafe and sat for hours, and I mean hours, reading the menu like it was the memoir of some ancient alchemist. I could not believe my eyes. Even now, my hands shake a write the words... "FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF VEGETARIAN BREAKFAST". The only possibile explanation for such innovation is that Leo is part of a holy lineage of Leo's: DaVinci, DeCaprio, and DeCafe. I placed my order of Traditional Breakfast (hot drink included). Seemingly no time at all had passed when WHACK! My lower jaw smacked against the wooden table as a hurculean discus, a vessel for a steaming hot ensemble of breakfast delights, was presented in front of me. I'll save you the details of what happened next and refer you to my review of Marina's Cafe. DIDN'T TOUCH THE SIDES Even now I'm certain i will never need to eat again. Breakfast, coffee, and a banana milkshake for less than £14. This may be my last review, for I have died and gone to heaven.

Yelp
After consuming 2 bottles of red wine the night before and stumbling home with my partner in crime (Helen W - yes I did just name and shame) the concept of dragging our bodies out the house seemed almost impossible. That was until Helen started talking about bacon, and her desperate need for it, oh and she also wanted orange juice. At this point I suggested that we go to the shop, she moaned weakly - a bit like an unhappy bird cry. I knew at the point I was going to have to find her a proper fry-up and soon. So off we trotted to find some bad ass fry-up action near my new abode. That was when we stubled upon the delights of Leo. Now I'm not sure if this is a friend of the other greasy spoons Leo's I have been to but it was pretty damn good. The ketchup was vingerery, the bacon greasy (Helen's not mine) and the service was amazingly surly. Just what I like from a top notch greasy spoon. It doesn't pretend to be anything it's not, juts a really extensive menu, starting from £2.50 for scrambled eggs on toast and a great space for you to hang your head in shame and chat about the night before. Leo, you're a top fella!

Yelp
Had a lovely little fry up here. Pretty sizeable fry up for less than a fiver is always good when your feeling a little fragile after a big night. Over all nothing to shout about but very decent for a 'greasy spoon' cafe.

Yelp
I have literally been going to this cafe for as long as I can remember. Great value for money, and the food is greaaaat. Staff are fantastic here. I literally cannot think of any negatives. My entire family has been coming here for weekend fry ups since I was a kid, and when I'm back home, this is the place I always come crawling to for a fatty hangover cure.

Yelp
A basic friendly cafe. Food and drink was great value. I had a bacon sandwich and a steaming mug of tea for 2 pounds. The service was excellent.
