"This glass-paned corner storefront on Main Street has seen a number of grill and malt shops come and go over the past two decades, but the space’s old-fashioned heart (and decor) has remained unchanged. From the grill, grab a flat-top burger and add fries and onion rings. Save room for a thick, creamy malt: Leo’s flavors range from classics like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry to pineapple, orange Dreamsicle, and chocolate wild cherry." - Justine Jones, Eater Staff

Stopped here long Stillwater's main street on our way to Wisconsin, & it was fantastic! We got there just after 5pm on Friday & there was no wait so we beat the line of people that started about 45 minutes later. Service was SUPER friendly & extremely efficient. My kids loved asking the server questions & the server had plenty to share of about the restaurant's features. The kid's menu was perfect for the kids, & they loved doing the "can you find" list to hunt down fun items displayed in the restaurant too. Cheese curds, bacon cheddar burger, waffle fries with seasoned sour cream, Oreo malt, sweet potato tots, crinkle fries, hot dog, mini corn dogs... All tasted great & served very quickly. Will definitely come back again & we will be willing to wait in line when we come back next time!

Leo's first time here, first impressions, clean for the most part, the restroom is unisex and it's only 1. but there's a bench by the restroom for you to wait on soo that's good. anyway take a step back into an eara that's long gone old signs old style booths, old style feels, it's one cozy little joint. I ordered the deluxe burger with french fries and a cherry coke, I think the cherry coke is made with grenadine hard to tell but it's tasty, the burger was very delicious and messy, the Patty's were done perfectly, The french fries had a nice crisp to them not all floppy. the over all service was pretty good the waitress was on top of her game same with the cooks, a definite must stop when in downtown Stillwater, will return in the future for ice cream review

Google
Amazing service. Amazing food. The Leo’s melt was AWESOME! FLAVORFUL! our service was great. They were busy this time of year but still managed to get everything right. We’re visiting from South Florida and it’s been nothing but nice here in Stillwater. Kudos to all of you.

Google
They have a cute “walk-through” window where you can order ice cream on the go. The maple nut ice cream cone was definitely among the best I’ve had, so much so that I was tempted to go back and order another!

Google
Super small, but not in a bad way. Food was delicious. First time in forever I've seen a peanut butter and jelly sandwich on the kid menu which was amazing since our toddler is wildly picky. The melts (tuna and Leo specifically) we're both exactly as good as we were hoping.

Google
Rosie was a most excellent server. Both my husband and I appreciated her awareness and control of the entire dining room. (He would’ve given her a bigger tip, but ran out of cash.😳) The food was also great! We liked reading the story behind the name. Leo & Gloria. Loved that. We hope to be back soon!

Delicious Malt and icecream with view of the road. Service was excellent.

Google
Came here with a friend. Food is absolutely amazing !!! The service on the other hand in my opinion poor. We got seated by a window wasn’t super comfy but that’s fine. We moved to a booth way more comfy. The server seemed upset that we moved n felt a slight attitude change. I asked for an appetizer didn’t get it. The other server we had after moving didn’t check up didn’t see how we were doing nothing . If I could I would tip the cooks and go on about my day. I’ve been a server before it’s not hard. Other than that again great food ! Definitely should make the place bigger or expand to other spots !!

Yelp
What a great malt shop!! Immediately walking in I was greeted by the waitress, Rosie, who never broke from a smile. She made sure all her customers had what they needed and was happy and grateful the whole time I was there. Wish there were more serving at restaurants like her!! It made for a relaxing atmosphere. I ordered a bacon cheddar burger and a mocha malt. The malt definitely tasted like mocha!! Worth every drop of it!! The burger patty was larger than the bun, which is unusual these day. And they didn't skimp on the fixings. I replaced red onions for sautéed onions that made the burger. Their fresh kettle chips tasted great!! No need for fries! But, if you want the classic, you have that option. This was a great Stillwater stop in the middle of a warm motorcycle ride on a beautiful Sunday. I'd do it again next time I'm through!

Yelp
I'm not a complainer, usually, but dang. This was our second time there today. The first time, last year, was awesome. A bit pricey for burgers, and ice cream, but the service was so good (really sweet young college student), and the food is good there. Reminds me of Bridgeman's, long long ago, when they were a full 50's style restaurant. This was our second time there today, however, and it was different. Independence day, it's raining, so no festivities for anyone around. So, as a treat, we went to Leo's Grill. We spent $113+ for a family of 5, to have a holiday lunch. Kind of a big deal for us, anyway. The service wasn't good, staff looked unapproachable -almost silently irritated to be working. When we sat down, they gave us two waters, so I had to ask for more (waters). So, they gave us two more. I actually had to ask again, saying that we had five people, that they could clearly see (didn't say that part out loud), and that I still needed another water. My bad. We asked to taste their 131 sauce, in case my daughter hated it, to avoid wasting an expensive burger.....and they looked at us like we were annoying. The gal couldn't describe the taste, or compare it to anything, so we asked to taste it....but it was almost like we were bothering her. They forgot to return to our table, so many times, so I had to raise my hand to flag some help. It's a small place, one of those ladies, eh????.....so we could order more food, order drinks, and remove appetizer plates, that we had to stack up for them to actually take away, and no one but us noticed, that were too many plates for our meal.... They forgot the extra plates, we repeatedly asked for, so we could share our ice cream with our young kids....They only time they remembered anything, was when we ordered something that actually cost money. 3 or 4 wait staff for 15 tables, how hard could that be (?) and they were just too busy for us to be there. Not really. Order. Eat. And be quiet. Waitress never said a word, as she put our bill down, at the table....Never asked us if we were done, or ready for it. $113.62. Chump change. Then, we noticed, they charged us for all the condiments we'd asked for to eat with our food....$1 for the "131 sauce" for our burger, $1 for ranch for our fries, another $1 ranch for more fries, $.50 for an extra oreo cookie in our malt.....etc. Because at Leo's, you have to eat the food as is, eat it dry, OR PAY for absolutely anything you might need to eat their food. If it isn't ketchup or mustard, salt or pepper, YOU PAY FOR IT. Surprised they don't charge for those too though. Or napkins....or the crayons they give the kids (exactly 4 crayons for three kids to share-and fight over). And to have anything but nasty burnt kettle chips (from a bag) with your meal, YOU PAY, even when a not-so-large burger is already $10-15. (We never noticed this the first time!) Want fries with your burger? Add $2-3! Everything is a-la-cart, except, this is not a 5-star restaurant we are talking about, it's a burger/malt-shop joint, with plastic tabletops, and greasy floors. Some very disappointing policies there that we paid for. Why open a restaurant, if the condiments are too expensive, for you to offer to your customers for free, to eat the food that you are selling to them? Fast food places, and dairy queen, don't even do that. And since no one complains about it, it won't ever change.....it'll get worse. Restaurant owners open restaurants, take all the profits, but want their customers to pay their employees salaries outright (tips), and at Leo's, we have to buy our own condiments- with our unfriendly service too. We had to ask for help with high hairs, boosters, and even a clean table to sit at....no one came to help us voluntarily. And they looked at us like we were unbelievable, to ask if we could wait for a clean booth-because there were several dirty options waiting for us. How dare I. "Wait at the door, and get what we give you" looks. Can't hide those facial expressions. Our kids don't sit still, so a booth is very necessary, to keep their other customers content....We have to box ours in. How dare we approach them, and ask for anything, they were working, can't we see?!! Yeah, I'm over THAT kind of treatment since covid...... We asked for a to-go box, and was told to "get one over there". No one came back after our ice cream order. Why did we have to ask for all of these things (above)? Because we sat there waiting, and waiting, and waiting, during every step of our holiday lunch. They didn't seem to care one bit about it. It's just lunch, right? There are customers waiting to eat there. They don't need our $113 + , to be bothered by us, and our questions. Hard to hide my husband's anger when leaving. He said nothing, but says he will NEVER spent another penny there. ("Never coming back here again!") Hope those extra condiment dollars are worth it to them, because we won't go back a third time. So sad.

Yelp
My daughter and two granddaughters accompanied me in travel across the river to Stillwater, on an absolutely beautiful Friday afternoon. The sun was brilliant, and the breeze cool. Perfect for an outdoor lunch. We chose to enjoy our lunch at Leo's. At first, we took a peak inside. It was very crowded and only one table available. One of the girls said, "I don't want to sit in here. There's a creepy man at that table." Looks like I taught my daughter well. LoL, it was actually one of the grandkids, so I guess she taught them well. The child has spoken. To the patio, we trekked. Now seated in the comfort of open air, we took a look at what Leo's had to offer. The menu was full of various burgers and sandwiches. Also, on prominent display, was a list of delectable malts and shakes. When visiting Leo's, you MUST have one of these. And that we did. In fact, two! I shared a chocolate fudge shake with one of the girls, and my daughter shared a vanilla one with the other. Both were cold milky goodness. For the solid portion of our meal, I ordered the Leo's melt, my daughter, the BLT, and both granddaughters ordered off the kids' menu. I can't remember what, but they devoured it to the last crumb. My melt was very good. A bit on the salty side, but the shake took the sting away. It was served with homemade chips, which were outstanding. Especially if you're fortunate enough to encounter one that was undercooked. Its soft texture a stark contrast to the crispness of the others. What a combination. The BLT was full of bacon. Leo's doesn't scrimp on it. The fries that came with it are standard. You have your choice, fries, or chips. Stick with the chips. The servers are very friendly and efficient. Keep these attributes in mind when tipping. Enjoy your meal. Quick Tip: After your meal, think about taking a stroll on the liftbridge over the St. Croix. The middle portion lifts on the half-hour. But don't make the same mistake that I did. The knucklehead I am, I thought that I was recording the process of it going up and the boats under. Seems that I forgot to push the record button! Must have been the sugar high from the shake. SMH......

Yelp
The food amazing and ambiance is super and yum yum you should try ice cream omg it's literally mouth watering And the service is tooo good and highly recommend this place

Yelp
A no frills spot for a solid ice cream cone! There was a bit of a line at the ice cream window on a Saturday around 3, though it moved pretty fast! You order at the window and then someone else brings you your ice cream. My partner and I each got a cone - chocolate chip cookie dough and maple nut - both were both delicious! It didn't seem there was a flavor of the day, which was a bit of a bummer.

Yelp
We went on the 4th of July for my Dad's birthday and had a great time. Amazing service from our wonderful waitress Rosie!!! My dad loved the clown sundae.

Hanah L.

Yelp
First time in Stillwater and received so many recommendations to check Leo's out! After dining here, I see why it was so highly and heavily recommended. The exterior and interior has such a classic diner feel, felt like we traveled back in time! Given that it's an old school diner, there are a lot of sandwiches, burgers, and of course, milkshakes to choose from! The cheeseburger and club sandwich were so simple yet so good! Those homemade chips were absolute perfection!! Of course we had to try a milkshake and chose birthday cake. It was so sweet and balanced out the savory food :) Leo's made our first trip to Stillwater so memorable, I'm excited to come back!

Yelp
Food: My burger was top notch, the onion rings where amazing, and the shake was great. Service: Great! Really friendly! Ambiance: Great! Classic music and decor! Extra Note: Gets VERY busy, get there before you think you should to beat the crowd.

Jason C.

Yelp
We got the cheese curds, sundae and cup of chili. First two were good. Quality was great. But chili was great disappointment. Originally I was just waiting for my friend until I notice the sign say they have award winning chili. Taste: Tomato were way too acidic which overpower everything else.

Shehla M.

Yelp
What an adorable hidden ice cream spot! Located on a corner street, literally next to another, very loud ice cream shop, this little spot is hard to find, but a big miss if you don't try it! Leo's is exclusive to the ringing of a bell, just at one single counter, inside of a building. The service is based upon one single person placing your order, who then closes the window and waits for the next customer to "ring the bell." (((How cute!))) Upon ordering the many options listen outside of the small window, they will hand you your order outside of the door to the right. I know, odd right? But so fun! What an adorable little spot, that takes you right back to the good ol days of traditional churned ice cream, and golden, more traditional flavors! All of which do not disappoint! The cookies and cream was my sons favorite, as well as the milk chocolate. I highly recommend Leo's Yelpers! Cheers to tradition xx

Suzie R.

Yelp
A staple of downtown Stillwater. It's one of those old timey American restaurants. It's got a small town feel. Currently there is a lot of construction going on in downtown Stillwater. There's a window you can order ice cream or come on in to eat dinner and ice cream. I opted for a Rueben on gfree bread. There's a separate gfree menu! Yum! Alongside a side salad sans croutons. My kid opted for mini corn dogs, mandarin oranges, Oreos and milk. And last but not least some ice cream to end our visit. Service was great and it was so nice and shaded from the hot sun. We'll be back!

Sam N.

Yelp
Leo's is the bomb! Come here if you want a great molt and friendly service. I asked one of the workers what her favorite was and she picked my Oreo. Excellent choice! I will be coming back. Love you guys at Leo's!

Travis H.

Yelp
We love Leo's!! Winter or Summer we love their diner food and excellent ice cream treats! They have added on recently with a nice outdoor seating area so on those beautiful summer evenings you can enjoy your meal outside. Love their walk up window, you can order all your favorite treats and enjoy them around town. Stillwater is so nice and hopefully Leo's will be here forever.

Patti I.

Yelp
The perfect spot in Stillwater if you want a burger, malt, and fries. Friendly service, reasonable prices, and a small-town diner/burger joint feel. Parking in Stillwater isn't easy, but you're probably strolling along Main Street anyway, so duck in and dine!

Sheri S.

Yelp
Lumberjack Days brought me to downtown Stillwater but Leo's Grill definitely made me fulfill the child inside. My friend and I agreed to indulge at Leo's for a snack. The appeal of the old school style right in the midst of the action was so fun. I knew I wanted the Butterscotch and Nutella malt and was in love! The Butterscotch, Nutella combo was perfection! Of course, I had to try their cheese curds, so we did. We noticed the staff were very young and attentive. Our order came our super fast and we enjoyed it in speedy fashion.

Luke G.

Yelp
The malts are top notch! There's so many different flavors and I also love that you get the extra tin to top off glass after a few sips! The burgers are fresh and hand pressed, but otherwise there's nothing really special. If you don't want potato chips as a side they have a decent up charge. The kids meals have generous portions too, which is nice!

Carene L.

Yelp
Always happy to great a large group. Great diner food with amazing shakes- especially their Eggnog shake. Will always recommend.

Shelby L.

Yelp
Fun ambiance and tasty diner food! This was a great stop for lunch on our day trip to Stillwater. Service was fast and consistent!

Fivesfilms ..

Yelp
Excellent every time that Ive been there. I highly recommend this place! Summertime is the best time to go there.

Terra S.

Yelp
When we saw the huge line at the ice cream window, we knew that Leo's was the place to go. The inside is quite small and we were lucky to get a table for 5 adults. For appetizers we had tasty onion rings and fried cheese curds that were amazing! We ordered a cheeseburger, club sandwich, and the French dip. All very yummy. The sweet potato tots were delicious! Our favorite part of Leo's though was the service. Our server, Rosie, was an absolute delight! It was our first time eating here and she was super helpful, cheerful, patient, and quick!

Shanna G.

Yelp
Come for the shakes stay for the burgers! Leo's Grill & Malt Shop is a pillar of the Stillwater community. They give back so much to the community. It's a locally owned family business that I enjoy supporting and encourage others to support as well. Many of our youth have had their first job at Leo's. It's been a right of passage for many of our 5th graders from Andersen Elementry to "run" Leo's for a weekend. We love stopping in for milk shakes and burgers when we are downtown. The shakes are phenomenal! The burgers so yummy. And those onion rings!!!! I can never get enough of them.

LeeAnn O.

Yelp
The food is always good. Service is excellent with smiles and just the right amount of attention. Who could as for better ambience for a hamburger joint. And then there is the ice cream!!! Need I say more?

M B.

Yelp
Anamazing waitress works . Wish I got her name! Tall dark hair and a wiz at running the restaurant and doing it very well. the food- good grill food. But the malts/shakes - omg . I loved it- I had the speciality death by chocolate. It was super chocolatey - just how I like it. My friends had regular chocolate and liked there's less chocolatey. The Raspberry shake hubby had was very good!

PJ C.

Yelp
It was stinking hot in Stillwater and I needed something to cool me down. While my nieces went next-door to the hip ice cream shop with glitter sprinkles (?) I opted for the old school Leo's. I ordered a cherry and marshmallow malt and it was delicious with huge chunks for cherries in it. Not cheap but it hit the spot!

Troy S.

Yelp
They perfect combo of classic flat top burger, crinkle fries and chocolate malt. Doesn't get any better than this folks!

Robin P.

Yelp
Cute Clean Great shakes, and food Friendly Good value Easy access Lots of other shops nearby By the river, walking bridge into WI

Jaye P.

Yelp
Strawberry milk shakes on a hot July afternoon. The outdoor seating area offers soft serve as well. Perfect

Hayley B.

Yelp
Great dogs and curds but the fries are AMAZING!!!! WOW!!!! SERIOUSLY! CRinkle fries are usually blah but these were golden crispy and the best. Had a cone down the corner at theri Gloria's to go ice cream shop, such a great deal, 3 dollars for a large cone. Nice service as well. I can't speak to the malts as they're all made wuth dairy, but they looked delicious for those who can tolerate lactose. Great Place for families and a throwback diner vibe.

Matthew U.

Yelp
Love the food. Love the atmosphere. We always stop here when in Stillwater! Keep up the good work!

Caiden G.

Yelp
The food was some of the best i've had, just about ruined sandwiches for me Place has a chill vibe, lots of families but is quiet enough. Not a cafe or anything though. Service was nice.

Dahri N.

Yelp
Leo's is a comfort food haven! And, everything is so yummy! The malts... Get one!! It's a MUST HAVE no matter what flavor you choose. The staff are really friendly, and, Leo's is a fun place to bring kids. It's got a "50's malt shop" kind of vibe. I've never had a bad meal or experience at Leo's! Fun place! Enjoy!

Scott F.

Yelp
This is a cute old town Stillwater malt shop. Their food is good and the ice cream is popular. I definitely think the waffle fries and sweet potato tots are tasty but you won't win a Twin Cities burger competition with the fare here. It's definitely touristy but good for kids

Emily D.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for any ice cream, but especially malts! While I didn't go inside the restaurant, I used the side window to place orders for malts. There was a bit of a line (expected for a Saturday afternoon in July), but it went very quickly. The options for shakes and malts was fairly extensive - about a dozen of their "basic" malts and a dozen more of their premium variety. The prices were fair ($6 each), especially considering the rather large portion. After placing the order, it was only a few minutes because the little side door opened with my order - complete with whipped cream and a cherry on top! I had the nutella malt and OMG it was one of the best malts I've ever had. There was just the right amount of nutella and malted milk that the combo was to die for! Other places I've been too really skip on the malted milk, but not Leo's! My husband had a coffee malt and I've pretty sure there was really coffee in it (not just coffee icecream). I'd highly recommend this place to anyone looking to cool down with a sweet treat on a summer day!

Shaun J.

Yelp
This place is great. We sat on the patio and it was beautiful weather on Labor Day. The food was fast and fresh. I had a pulled pork sandwich and we shared a hot fudge malt, the only bad part was how sad I was trying to get the last little bit of malt out of the glass.

Adam J.

Yelp
Wonderful food and atmosphere. Old time decor is amazing. The ice cream is always good. Service is always great. Recommended!

Tom D.

Yelp
Wow! I'm from the West Coast visiting...but after finding Leo's ...I think I'll just move here. It was the best cheeseburger, fries, and chocolate malt I've ever had! The people are very pleasant and efficient, the interior is warm and inviting. I love the authentic vintage signage on the walls. You will not be disappointed.

Paige S.

Yelp
Stopped that this cute restaurant while in Stillwater. The food was delicious and located in a great spot. Will definitely go back one day.

Robert E.

Yelp
Good food and you can also order ice cream and malts and the like through the walk up window. Way better than the ice cream shop next door.

Cassandra D.

Yelp
Best burgers, malts and ice cream in Stillwater, MN! This quaint corner restaurant has about a dozen or so tables inside and a small tented patio in the back (very casual). Picnic benches are sat outside near the walk up ice cream order window- a great spot for people watching! I ordered the Mucho Leo's Burger. It's a smashburger with jalapeños, onions, pepperjack & chipotle mayo. I casually mentioned to our waitress that I was splitting it with my mom, and she had it split plated for us. It was a nice, unexpected surprise! Burgers come with kettle chips and pickles, but you can substitute them for a variety of different options- substitution prices vary. We went with onion rings and a side salad and they didn't disappoint! We also tried the cheese curds, but the breading wasn't my favorite. You could pass on these and you wouldn't be missing out.

Xia Y.

Yelp
Stopped by for some malt while walking around Downtown Stillwater. I loved that they had a side window where you can place an order and they bring it right out to you. It was convenient and fast. The malt was also delicious.

Mary G.

Yelp
Leo's is a fun place to go. They have a great outdoor dining area and we bring our little dog in the summer. The food is delicious and it's a great place to bring out of town/staters.

Dale G.

Yelp
Fun old school setting. Perfectly located centrally downtown Stillwater. Mediocre food. Everything is simple.

Dude _.

Yelp
We were looking in the maps app for a place to dine near the hotel that we could walk to and took notice to Leo's. It had a high rating on Yelp so we gave it a shot. Leo's did not disappoint! Awesome classic American diner with 50's/60's charm. The burgers and malts were awesome! We went back a second time before heading home after our weekend getaway.

Sarah L.

Yelp
Was super excited to dine in today, one of the few dine-in experiences of the past year+ and Leo's did not disappoint. I had their grilled cheese deluxe meal, a mocha toffee crunch malt, and shared cheese curds. Cheese curds were decent, malt was phenomenal (crunchy toffee bits were prime) and the meal was perfect for this dairy-loving girl. Everything was fast. A Stillwater classic!

Tate I.

Yelp
Wow - where to begin? So much goodness Very cool spot/atmosphere Had a super short wait - had just enough time to walk out and look at the river and walk back for our table Loved all the staff - so friendly Atmosphere- A++ Food - A++ Dessert- Best Shake I have ever had A++ Only suggestion I have would be some Top the tatter for the chips ;D I'd give this place 6 stars if I could We will be coming back... OFTEN!!!

Anthony V.

Yelp
The ceiling and fan was filthy . We walked in I looked up and we walked out . The owner does not understand our perception . If the Ceiling and Ceiling fan are filth , then it stands to reason that he or she accepts filth everywhere including the kitchen . Pass

Carli C.

Yelp
A classic mom and pop shop! Service was a little awkward due to how small the place is, she had us sit at a table even though we stated we were ordering only a cone to-go. Very tight space if you go during busy hours. Had a cookie dough ice cream cone but it wasn't anything special. We would maybe try coming back again in the warmer months.

Farmer J.

Yelp
Recommended by another restaurant that doesn't have a kids meal. Really was excited to come here after the reviews but let down. Tuna melt was super fishy. The coke slaw was not recognizable as coke slaw and was terrible . The Leo's melt which. Was recommended was not very good at all. The onion rings and fries were decent. The waitress told us she couldn't get dole whip which doesn't make any sense. My wife had to go walk 20 feet and order it from the counter from the same restaurant we were at which was ridiculous. With two adults and two kids it was $50 before tip and I have had better food at Wendy's for less than half the price. The service was good until we paid our bill and tipped 15% and then the waitress never came back to fill our waters or take our plates. The only thing this place has going for it is the patio and ice cream which as I stated my wife had to order separately even though my child got his ice cream cone from the menu at the same place. Some reviews say this is one of the best burgers in Minnesota and to that I say, not even close! The Nook, Matt's and even Wendy's blows this place away. To say these are the best burgers in Minnesota or even a good one makes Minnesota look bad. Minnesota has some great burgers and this isn't one of them. They need better food and better service.

Richard J.

Yelp
Vinni Perri, absolutely astonishing in service. Milkshakes... Phenomenal. I almost died! Best day ever. Dani was phenomenal absolutely great at service. It was so amazing. Love, Anonymous

Debra C.

Decided to visit Stillwater. Crowded town for a hot sunny Sunday day. Decided to get something to eat and stopped here. The place was packed and had a line to be seated. While waiting for a place to eat I decided to walk up and down the block to see what else was available for eating places. Funny, there were many places to eat, but very few people in them. Everybody seemed to be at Leo's. I had the seasonal salad special. Strawberry grilled chicken salad. It was good. It is a large salad. Only thing that was a bit frustrating is that they do not give you a knife so I couldn't cut up my lettuce into smaller pieces and the cheaper forks they have does not spear the lettuce very well in order to eat your salad My friend had the burger Leo special (something like that) He said it was one of the best burgers he has had.
