I'm not a complainer, usually, but dang. This was our second time there today. The first time, last year, was awesome. A bit pricey for burgers, and ice cream, but the service was so good (really sweet young college student), and the food is good there. Reminds me of Bridgeman's, long long ago, when they were a full 50's style restaurant.
This was our second time there today, however, and it was different. Independence day, it's raining, so no festivities for anyone around. So, as a treat, we went to Leo's Grill. We spent $113+ for a family of 5, to have a holiday lunch. Kind of a big deal for us, anyway. The service wasn't good, staff looked unapproachable -almost silently irritated to be working. When we sat down, they gave us two waters, so I had to ask for more (waters). So, they gave us two more. I actually had to ask again, saying that we had five people, that they could clearly see (didn't say that part out loud), and that I still needed another water. My bad.
We asked to taste their 131 sauce, in case my daughter hated it, to avoid wasting an expensive burger.....and they looked at us like we were annoying. The gal couldn't describe the taste, or compare it to anything, so we asked to taste it....but it was almost like we were bothering her. They forgot to return to our table, so many times, so I had to raise my hand to flag some help. It's a small place, one of those ladies, eh????.....so we could order more food, order drinks, and remove appetizer plates, that we had to stack up for them to actually take away, and no one but us noticed, that were too many plates for our meal.... They forgot the extra plates, we repeatedly asked for, so we could share our ice cream with our young kids....They only time they remembered anything, was when we ordered something that actually cost money. 3 or 4 wait staff for 15 tables, how hard could that be (?) and they were just too busy for us to be there. Not really. Order. Eat. And be quiet. Waitress never said a word, as she put our bill down, at the table....Never asked us if we were done, or ready for it. $113.62. Chump change.
Then, we noticed, they charged us for all the condiments we'd asked for to eat with our food....$1 for the "131 sauce" for our burger, $1 for ranch for our fries, another $1 ranch for more fries, $.50 for an extra oreo cookie in our malt.....etc. Because at Leo's, you have to eat the food as is, eat it dry, OR PAY for absolutely anything you might need to eat their food. If it isn't ketchup or mustard, salt or pepper, YOU PAY FOR IT. Surprised they don't charge for those too though. Or napkins....or the crayons they give the kids (exactly 4 crayons for three kids to share-and fight over).
And to have anything but nasty burnt kettle chips (from a bag) with your meal, YOU PAY, even when a not-so-large burger is already $10-15. (We never noticed this the first time!) Want fries with your burger? Add $2-3! Everything is a-la-cart, except, this is not a 5-star restaurant we are talking about, it's a burger/malt-shop joint, with plastic tabletops, and greasy floors. Some very disappointing policies there that we paid for.
Why open a restaurant, if the condiments are too expensive, for you to offer to your customers for free, to eat the food that you are selling to them? Fast food places, and dairy queen, don't even do that. And since no one complains about it, it won't ever change.....it'll get worse. Restaurant owners open restaurants, take all the profits, but want their customers to pay their employees salaries outright (tips), and at Leo's, we have to buy our own condiments- with our unfriendly service too.
We had to ask for help with high hairs, boosters, and even a clean table to sit at....no one came to help us voluntarily.
And they looked at us like we were unbelievable, to ask if we could wait for a clean booth-because there were several dirty options waiting for us. How dare I. "Wait at the door, and get what we give you" looks. Can't hide those facial expressions. Our kids don't sit still, so a booth is very necessary, to keep their other customers content....We have to box ours in. How dare we approach them, and ask for anything, they were working, can't we see?!! Yeah, I'm over THAT kind of treatment since covid......
We asked for a to-go box, and was told to "get one over there". No one came back after our ice cream order. Why did we have to ask for all of these things (above)? Because we sat there waiting, and waiting, and waiting, during every step of our holiday lunch. They didn't seem to care one bit about it. It's just lunch, right? There are customers waiting to eat there. They don't need our $113 + , to be bothered by us, and our questions. Hard to hide my husband's anger when leaving. He said nothing, but says he will NEVER spent another penny there. ("Never coming back here again!") Hope those extra condiment dollars are worth it to them, because we won't go back a third time. So sad.
