"One of the oldest Mexican restaurants in the South Bay and a bonafide local institution, the first thing you should know about Leo’s in Lawndale is they’re famous for something called “cheese chips,” which are exactly what they sound like: a plate of tortillas chips underneath a blanket of broiled white cheese, like something you’d make in college at 2am with an empty fridge. But wow, if it doesn’t hit the spot with a tall Cadillac margarita on the rocks. After you’ve polished off your last round of chips and admired the retro faux-abode decor, order the Leo’s excellent chile con carne (red or green), which comes with fluffy rice and creamy refried beans that don’t taste like an afterthought." - Garrett Snyder

Leo's is pretty good for this area. They have well seasoned meat and fresh tortillas. I wouldn't dine in, as the seating isn't great, but take out is perfect. The host was really nice.

Google
Fun place, but it’s not my favorite option for the price or quality. They only accept cash, and while the food is good, the $10-15 plates are not necessarily worth the price. It’s not super inviting, and for a hole-in-the-wall joint, it’s just average.

Google
I hate to leave a bad review but the food cleanliness is questionable. It’s expensive and cash only there aren’t really menu prices listed and the food is really just OK maybe.

I've been going to Leo's since the early 90s when my Dad use to take me there. The food has always been excellent 👍🏼. One of the most authentic Mexican food places still around. A hole in the wall with the best tasting food. My favorite are the Huevos Rancheros. I highly recommend this place.

Google
We love this place. We're from Portland and every time we come to Hollywood we eat here. The women working are always super sweet and welcoming! It's a smaller place and the service does take awhile because there are usually only 2 people working, but it's well worth the wait. Everything we've tried there has been amazing and the homemade tortillas are to die for! If u haven't tried their food u need to! Make sure to tip, they work their butts off there!!

Google
Terrible service and terrible food… Terrible ambiance… I’m not one to be mean and leave a bad review, but this place earned it. The rice was so dry, it felt raw. Like they just gave us the ugliest food they could give. The meat was mostly nerve, and was extremely greasy. In my honest opinion, the only good thing about this place was the tortilla and the caned soda, because the “aguas frescas” were just food colored water. Also, when asking for and update on an order of 2 tacos, the lady was snappy and rude. Anyway, go at your own risk. This place honestly sucks. Would’ve been better off going to one of the two taco stands that were outside. Now I know.

Google
Everything is Overpriced they my want to b reach fats . The place is dirty. Not a good place to eat. Not a good experience to be here. I don't recommend

Google
I had the Chicharron plate with hand made tortillas... yummmm. Maria said she can make it not spicy and she did. Man that was good! This place is cash only, so go prepared.

Yelp
Hard pass. I took a mega risk in my health going here. Only reason I went here is because I used to come here as a kid. Food was fire in the 90s lol. No prices on the menu board. Spent $24 on nachos and a burrito. Food was mid. You could get the same quality from any taco truck on the street these days with $5-$10 less. The reason why I say I took a mega risk is because when I left the restaurant, I kind of questioned the quality/cleanliness. I looked all over the front of the building and by the register and there were no Health Inspection Grades visible. Well I took a chance eating my $24 food. So far so good. But who knows what might be growing in my gut lol. TL;DR - Hard pass. Go get same low quality but cheaper food elsewhere.

Yelp
Horrible costumer service. Super rude owner. Don't spend your money here. Food is super mediocre.

Leslie Z.

Yelp
Worst fucking place ever!!! I didn't know it was okay to yell at a customer for asking a question. A simple no would be okay. If you're miserable with your fucking life don't take it out on the customers. If I could give this place one star I would. I lost my appetite right after. Just because you're the owner in a bad mood it doesn't make it okay to be super rude.

Patricia D.

Yelp
5 stars to this amazing Mexican restaurant in north Hollywood. If you haven't been here your missing out on good food.

Arlene P.

Yelp
The food @ Leo's is authentic Mexican food. They have great hand made tortillas, and you could always count on the best caldo de pollo when you're feeling under the weather. Their chicken soup has lifted me from the dead.

Kassie C.

Yelp
The nastiest roach infested excuse of a Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. My boyfriend warned me not to eat here but of course I wanted to give them a try. Please! Please!!! DONT EAT THE RICE!!!!

Solis S.

Yelp
Worse place ever the food is very price the portions very small customer service is horrible we order 2 birrias the plate come out with 1 meat bone and 1 piece of meat the plate full of red water with out any flavor my husband pay 28 dl for 2 little meat bones and 2 pieces de meat small never never I going back horrible place and service

Joe M.

Yelp
This place is horrible the taco meat from the asada was hard, no lie like rocks the only good thing was the tortillas a Mano other then that it sucks don't recommend I order 5 tacos 2 coke and one small order of rice and beans it came out to a whooping $28 yes that's what I said.

Ignacio G.

Yelp
As expected, food is good. I've been wanting to visit Leo's for some time and finally made it. I ordered "chorizo con huevo" and a coffee. Looks like the lady made tortillas by hand? Whaaaa? I had my laptop, because I was working, so the lady brought everything to my table, how cool is that! The only horrible thing is the parking lot.... sad face... Lucky for me when I arrived one person left so it was meant for me to have breakfast there. Local people go there a lot and they know each other by name, so I find that cool. I will return when I'm in the area and I'll make sure to have cash in my pocket.

Clarice G.

Yelp
Handmade tortillas are good. The Al Pastor was better than the Carne Asada. I gave this place 3 stars because the meat tasted like it was recooked. It wasn't freshly cooked. It was still good though! They only take Cash.

William A.

Yelp
This is a small local eatery on Laurel Canyon Blvd. I had three of the best beef tacos there. Just $6 and everything is fresh and not made until you order it. You can call ahead tho. If you walk in be prdpared to wait. But the food I have there is worth it. They make some pretty big burritos too.

Steve G.

Yelp
Got food poising from this place DO NOT EAT HERE , only thing I ate yesterday and within 3 hours I got a headache, nausea , now I'm in bed waiting to throw it up and hoping for this sickness to pass

Raymond B.

Yelp
I stop here often. So glad there's a really good Mexican food spot close to home! I usually get enchiladas or nachos. It's cash only though so be prepared to bring cash!

Brussly S.

Yelp
This place was a small Mexican restaurant with good food but now is just a small Mexican restaurant with terrible service and mediocre food. After waiting for my meal for 20 min they told me it would take another 10 min and when I told her that I had order the soup because she recommended to order that since it was ready, previously she told me not to order another dishes because they would take a long time. She said this is how long it takes and you should know I told her you can keep your soup there are many other Mexican restaurant. Will never go back there.

Mattie G.

Yelp
I live down Laurel Canyon and eat here all the time. Excellent food and excellent service :)

Ally Y.

Yelp
Best Mexican food I've ever had. Truly. They did speak English, cash only, no alcohol but don't worry because the food is out of this world. Home made tortillas. I got the steak tacos (2 with rice) and it was $7.25. The area isn't the greatest... Don't go alone, but us three girls went and I was great!!! Cheap and good. 5 stars in my book!

Robert A.

Yelp
Excellent prices and food, I really enjoy the service and the chile rojo :)

Songlian K.

Yelp
First off, this is a total hole-in-the-wall taco place that I would not recommended going to solo, unless you're a guy or it's the middle of the day. The area is on the sketchy side. I don't think it's necessarily too bad of an area, but it's definitely scary-looking. It's located in a strip mall, so keep a close eye out for it. OK, enough about that! I've been here several times, but I can't comment on too many of the food items. Here's what I do know. I love their carne asada tacos! They are absolutely delicious. The carne asada is nice and savory. They handmake their tortillas right on the spot and put a thin layer of beans on the tortilla, then the carne asada and top it with onions and cilantro. A couple of these is usually enough to fill me up. Their beans are good, rice is so-so. Taco's are about $1.79 per taco, so it can make for a cheap lunch! These are my favorite tacos in the area! I can also recommend the Chile Verde plate. That was pretty good with a nice kick in the spiciness level. I would NOT recommend anything carnitas from them. When I got my place, I thought, "Did I order chicken?" because it was so pale. Not that great. Because it is a hole-in-the-wall, the interior is not that big. There are about six booths and maybe 3-4 tables. You order at the counter and pick it up when it's ready. The people that work there don't speak English, so be prepared with some Spanish to order. Anytime I've been in there, I've been the only non-Spanish speaking person in the place.

Raymundo C.

Yelp
Food is good. Service not so much. Food takes a bit of time to get served. Went in one time and they forgot about my order about 20 minutes after I ordered my food the staff said "Oh, we haven't given you your order." They go on it promptly and 10 minutes later I finally got my order without a discount or any extra items to make up for their gaff. This has happened twice. Food is still good though.

Yelp
La la loooove this place. Carne asada burritos are THE BOMB. The best time to go is before 7pm. They close at 10pm. The workers are very nice. There chips and salsa is also really good. Parking is ok but overall if your looking for a good big nice carne asada burrito in that area then you need to stop in and get one I PROMISE U WONT BE MAD

Walter S.

Yelp
Walked in at 10:50pm realized they only take cash. Walked into the liquor store next door to get cash, walked back in at 10:55. Was told they were closed... Seriously? Shitty ass service

David V.

Yelp
This is a great little hole in the wall kind of place. Cash only, no English, hand made corn tortillas, cactus leaves. 1 lady took care of everyone in the restaurant. She is a hustler!!

Sebastian R.

Yelp
Once again, I am not a food critic but from my point of view this is beyond what I expected, the only thing that I dont like is the fact that they only accept cash but its a small, homemade like mexican restaurant, the food is great, the service is good but it could be better if they had more staff to be on the lookout for what customers need, overall it is delicious.

Ry P.

Yelp
I've only had the crane asada tacos but they are pretty good ! Fresh handmade tortillas are always a plus . You feel me ?

Matt T.

Yelp
This place use to be really good back in the day around '97 and im sure before, me and my friends use to love skating up the street to get burritos and gorditas. I always judge a mexican food joint by their salsa and leos i thought had the best red salsa i literally swigged some after every bite from my burrito. Unfortunately around '06 or so i think they lost their main cook and whoever had the salsa recipe because around that time my beloved salsa was gone and their food has never been the same for me. Now their just like any other mexican food joint.. Still good food though.

Bertha V.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots for a good mexican breakfast, absolutely love there chilakiles, menudo and there hand made tortillas, for reasonable price. Hate there parking spaces though, always full tried parking at liquor store and angry owner came out yelling lol had to wait a couple of times for people to leave but hay all worth my meal.

Mark A.

Yelp
I went to this restaurant because of the 5 Star review's .DON'T BELIEVE THEM.. I was going McDonald's but I wanted enchiladas so I made a detour Leo's restaurant. Humongous enormous mistake. The enchiladas were overpriced 9.75. for only 3. rice & beans. tiny crappy salad. $ 1.50 coffee. Presentation of plate very POOR. enchiladas were cold and flavorless. so was the rice. and the coffee was an INSULT. SHE BROUGHT A MARKET JAR OF FREEZE DRY INSTANT COFFEE. JOY BRAND. VERY LOW QUALITY CREAMER. SUGAR. STYROFOAM CUP WARM WATER. McDonald's could have served a better breakfast then this for half the money. These people are in the wrong business. They should be making shoes for Payless store.

David M.

Yelp
Fat Juicy mouth watering Taco's with steak that's soaked overnight ......I haven't tried anything else on the menu

Teri G.

Yelp
I agree with Songlian K. as I don't usually go there w/o a buddy. BUT the family favorite thing to order is a carne asada burrito con crema, queso, arroz, no frijoles... oh and lots of salsa

Edward K.

Yelp
Their tacos contain a lot of protein making them twice the size of other tacos it seems that are nearly the same price. They provide a small amount of chips with their meals and offer carne asada, carnitas, and chicken. They have a breakfast menu I have yet to try, however their food is overall good. The tacos with freshly made tortillas and an unusually large amount of meat... That is where I find the best value here. Great food at a reasonable price. However choose off the menu carefully, some items are definitely better than others.

Salomon S.

Yelp
I love Leo's the best Mexican food place on laurel cyn .!! I recommend to everybody!!

Feliz A.

Yelp
Place definitely needs some remodeling, but food and service are great :) recommend the flautas.

John S.

Yelp
The best asada tacos with handmade tortillas ever.I have been going there for 20 years and tried everywhere..and have decided.
