On the Grid : Les Piaules

"Thanks to Les Piaules, you don’t have to stay at your friends tiny flat anymore when you come to Paris. This brand new hostel has rooms from 2 to 8 beds, where everything is designed for your comfort. Along the common room there is a huge bar where you can drink local beer from Montreuil or Oberkampf, Belleville coffee or eat products from neighbouring shops. This room also features arcade games, photo booths and punching bag are one side, and a reading area around a stove on the other. The best of all is definitely the rooftop overlooking all Parisian monuments!" - Hyphen

The common areas were cozy and well-kept—especially the kitchen and lounge space, which felt like the heart of the place. The dorms were clean and comfortable, with decent privacy for a shared space. Beds came with personal outlets and small lights, which I always appreciate. It’s not a luxury stay, of course, but everything you need is there, and it’s clear the team puts care into the details.

The room is clean, but very dark with dim light and no light at the (tiny) sitting area. Beside the beds, there is one tiny sitting area that fit an open suitcase,so only one person can open their suitcase at a time. The bunk bed top is DANGEROUS. I fell down every time i tried to get down, was very concerned i might break my back or shoulder due to lack of rail to grip. The top beds are high but the stair up is badly designed. There is also no rail on the bed side so i felt unsafe sleeping at night. The bed is spacious and clean. The shared toilet was clean. The staffs were friendly and helpful. There is no kitchen and no way to even brew tea. The breakfast is a joke, the coffee tasted the worst i had in my whole trip, worse than the 1 euro auto coffee machine even. Overall, i won't recommend or going back due to safety concerns and lack of kitchen. I'd recommend go to the people bercy as it has kitchen and safer bed stair.

Great vibe and effort from the team! Overall, everything was great for a hostel. The place is quite clean, all the infrastructure works well, and you can see they really care about creating a good experience. During my stay, there was something happening almost every night — jazz jams, live music on two evenings, and even a DJ night. It’s clear that the team isn’t just running a hostel — they’re putting their heart into building a place with soul and community. No complaints at all. Solid five stars from me!

I stayed in the girls only room with six beds. The rooms were clean, each bed had a curtain, one electric outlet and a little light. The bathrooms seemed like they were cleaned regularly. They do not provide shower soap, so bring your own. Bring your own locks for storage lockers, and your own towels. There is no kitchen, so there is no place to store leftover food. Also, you can’t prepare your own breakfast/meals. Their café has no vegan options. The rooftop has a nice view of the city. You can see the Eiffel Tower from the top. The hostel is well connected to Transit, with two train stations within walking distance.

My stay at the hostel was unfortunately well below expectations. I had specifically booked a male-only room (which costs extra), but women were also checked into the same room. This raises concerns about the consistency of room assignments — I wonder if the same could happen in female-only rooms.||The bathrooms on the upper floors were extremely humid, to the point where it felt like being in a sauna.||Despite having paid for late check-out, I was woken up and asked to leave at the regular check-out time. I had to inform the staff myself that I had purchased late check-out — this information should already be known to the hostel team.||On the positive side, the hostel is in a good location.

Lively youth hostel set over a neighborhood bar. The rooms are clean and comfortable, with cozy bunks. We loved the excellent jazz nights, and the feel of being integrated into the lively Belleville neighborhood. We found the staff to be kind and very responsive. Their " Big Ass Break fast" is delicious and hearty, and they make the best "Grand Crème" we had in France. It's a space that keeps you coming back with it's quirky blend of Hosteling and neighborhood hangout. Surrounding Belleville is a multicultural melting pot, with excellent food, music and parks abounding and easy access to the rest of the city. The view from the rooftop terrace includes Sacré Coeur and the Eiffel tower, and is worth a visit on its' own terms. I have kept returning after multiple visits, and you can bet I will be back. Merci à toute l'équipe!

Just went for their unlimited breakfast which had a limited choice. Very good if you eat a lot of carbs. Pleasant terrace, charming staff. At ten euros it could be good value.

Great experience in my first hostel, room are comfortable and good privacy as well as storage for luggage. Bathrooms were always clean and fresh. 24/7 was a blessing and they are all so friendly. Definitely recommend this as an affordable option in Paris

Yelp
During my recent return to Paris, I decided to stay at The Peoples Hostel (Les Piaules) because I had a great time back in 2016. However, I decided to reserve a private room instead of a dorm room because I wanted more privacy while still getting the hostel experience. I highly recommend booking a private room if it's within your travel budget instead of the dorm room, especially if you're traveling solo or as a couple. Trust me! After a long day exploring Paris' many historical sites and museums and riding around the city in crowded metro trains, you'll want privacy to relax, rest, and unwind without strangers coming in and out of the room throughout the day and night. If you have the extra money to splurge a bit, I recommend booking a private room. Overall, the hostel hasn't changed much, if at all, since 2016, except for a name change, but it's still charming, an excellent place for all travelers, and close to many restaurants, stores, and metro stations. If you're a bit older (40-50+) and prefer a more relaxed and quiet hostel experience, you can find that at Les Piaules, but it will be loud on the nights scheduled for events like karaoke (Monday) and music provided by a local DJ (Friday and Saturday). The hostel (bar/lounge) is quiet throughout the day and allows for a great a working space with free wifi throughout the hostel, including wifi in your room. The hostel staff is friendly and helpful if you have questions about Paris. You can also purchase breakfast in the morning at the bar. There is a Franprix store a few minutes walk from the hostel, so you can get water, food, and snacks to bring back to your room. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, there is a farmers market steps from the hostels' front door. I'd stay here again if and when I return to Paris because it's reasonably priced and close to many stores and restaurants, including a laundromat (10-minute walk) in the local neighborhood. I also enjoy the vibe of the hostel. Whether traveling solo or with friends, I think you'll fall in love with this hostel. It has a comfortable, friendly, and safe vibe with a great social space (bar) to meet other travelers. Safe travels!

Yelp
I would not say I was a fan of my stay at Les Piaules, though I also don't have any serious complaints. Here is my opinion: Pros: - clean - friendly staff - relatively convenient location (Les Piaules is sandwiched between two metro stations, which puts you at a less than 30 minute commute for most places in Paris that are north of the Seine) Con: - rooms are small and I found it awkward when I had to sort things in my luggage as other people would then have no room to walk - rooms that are towards the far end of the hall are noisy at night because of the Hostel's proximity to the main street I would say that the right living quarters is what diminished my experience the most as I found it inconvenient to move around in the room. Final note -- it seems that the neighborhood is somewhat of a ethnic enclave for the Chinese community in France as there are large Chinese grocery markets, restaurants, and more in the area. This was quite a delight for me as I was able to get authentic Chinese dumplings nearby when I got tired of the local French cuisine.

Yelp
It was our first time in Paris and we only stayed at Les Piaules for one night. After a long and exhausting day of sightseeing, we checked in around midnight. When you walk in it looks like a bar/cafe/communal area. At first I thought the place was sketch (but this view may have been influenced by the outside area) and was glad we were leaving the next morning. HOWEVER, once we went upstairs, everything was great. What a relief... super clean and modern and not sketch AT ALL. We found that other visitors were very normal and friendly as well. Our primary purpose here was to sleep/shower and the beds were amazing! I'd say 4-5 star hotel quality, which was such a pleasant surprise. However, bunk beds are very high up and they only have two sturdy vertical belt things to keep you from falling off. My friend wasn't bothered by it but I was because I have a fear of falling. Also, bathrooms were very clean and up to par but don't forget to bring your own towel. In the morning, we were able to buy a quick breakfast and be on our way. The staff was very fast, friendly, and there was no language barrier. The downstairs area where we checked in/out with the bar/cafe that I previously described as sketch at night was the complete opposite in the daytime - was filled with people just doing what people do. If you're staying in Paris for a night or two, I would recommend Les Piaules.

Yelp
I stayed here for two nights at the start of my trip to paris. I was supposed to stay for 5 nights, but they put me in a bunk that was about 7ft off the ground. It was unsafe and barely had anything to hold on to at the top. I swear I saw my life flash before my eyes climbing up there. I asked a couple times to be moved to a lower bunk and they refused to because they were "booked" even though there was one open in the same dorm. So I called hotels.com and they arranged for me to get a (partial) refund on a non-refundable room. To me it's a bit ridiculous that they wouldn't just move me to another bunk, especially when plenty of people were checking out the next day and no one had reserved a specific bunk. Also they stop serving drinks at the bar at around 1130 and stop serving food at about 10pm. The craft cocktails they serve are just okay. The bartenders and front desk workers could be personable, some of them just rush you out. Check in is pretty slow when more than more than one person is in line. The dorms themselves are very small and narrow. There's almost no room between the bunks to open your suitcase or find your stuff. I did appreciate the privacy curtains though; I wouldnt stay in a hostel without those. Another big problem about this place is that there are NO FULL LENGTH MIRRORS anywhere. I find this absurd. In the bathrooms some genius decided to tilt the mirrors up so you couldn't see your entire body even if you wanted to. There's also no paper towels in the bathroom. No seat covers in the toilets. Don't expect to get a washcloth with your towel; it's only a towel. But at least the bathroom was mostly clean. The hostel itself is not in a very nice area. It might be safe, but it looks like skid row in LA. At least it's centrally located to a subway, but expect to take several lines if you want to get anywhere. There are also a couple of pharmacies and small markets that are reasonably priced near by, which was nice. The common area down stairs gets super packed in the evening. It's difficult to find quiet space to sit down and make a phone call. Regardless of all this criticism, it's a pretty decent hostel. Probably nicer than most hostels. The only reason I wouldnt stay there again is because of the bunk situation.

Yelp
Friendly staff Accommodations great for the price Clean facilities Decent bar and food Easily accessible through the metro (if you fly in just take the metro to the hostel) I don't really know what else you might expect from a hostel. It was pretty cash. Oh the rooftop has a nice view of the Eiffel Tower on a clear day.

Yelp
If you are visiting Paris and are looking for an affordable stay then this is your place. Overall atmosphere is great with an extremely helpful and friendly staff. Only downside on our stay was check-in and out delays due to technical issues. When my friends and I checked in we had an unpleasant situation the place was experiencing technical difficulties with their system. We had booked a hostel for four people and assumed we would be placed in this one; however they were placing us in a larger hostel which we mentioned to the staff was not the deal. After a few moments they figured out something and gave us two rooms with king beds to share for one night until they could accommodate us in the hostel we had reserved. This was a pleasant upgrade for a night as we got our own private space and our own bathroom in each room. The lobby turns into a bar at night which is very crowded and stuffy, but you'll have a good time if you are trying to meet new people and grab a couple drinks. The convenience of the surrounding shops and restaurants is great, not to mention a farmers market right in front of the place during the day. Despite the small check in issue which was handled in a professional and amicable way this place has treated me and my friends quite well. If ever in Paris again I will be arriving to this place, upgrading to the room would be a good idea.

Yelp
Terrible hosts at the front desk! There were two girls super rude. We got to the bar and asked them about the rooftop because we saw it online. The girl at the front desk SUPER rudely told us that it's only open for the hotel guest and didn't even looked at us. Afterwards we asked her if she knew any other rooftop in Paris because there was an Amazing sunset and she said no, again without looking at us. Service is the key of a good hotel/ bar and this places DOESN'T offer that

Yelp
This was my first hostel experience in Paris and Les Piaules really set the standard for cleanliness and customer service. The showers were hot and powerful. Don't make the mistake of forgetting your own towel or thongs- essential. Bed-wear was clean and warm however the hostel rooms were fairly cool. The lobby/lounge area is buzzing in the evenings and early in the mornings with locals and visitors alike stopping in for a drink or coffee. The staff is really friendly and without hesitation answered all of our questions. Careful with the top bunks if you're a shorty like me- scary coming down as it was going up.

Yelp
Spent my first night in Paris here. Was a little hard to find but it was also my first night in Paris. The staff is very frienmdly and helpful. Can't say much about the location but there's a beautiful view from the rooftop hangout (especially at sunrise). Splurged and got the Salty breakfast, which was honestly too much food but very good. They even let me leave my bag here ("Did you want to leave your bag here? It looks heavy.") Definitely want to come back.

Yelp
Les piaules is awesome!!!! Such an awesome, chill vibe going on here and great beer and food at great prices. Let's take it from the top. A little background info: this is actually a youth hostel / bar. If you're traveling and looking for a place to crash in Paris, look no further - les piaules has u covered. This place is brand spanking new, and the rooms are very affordable (around 24€ a night per person). I had the chance to visit the rooms and they are clean and spacious, curtains give the beds privacy, with large individual space under the beds for storage (where you can add a lock). The showers are individual cabins, and wait for it....there's a rooftop!!!!! Best views of Paris from up there - I kid you not! Super chill with some chairs and tables and lounge space - just amazing. This is Paris and not nyc so rooftops are a super rare thing here. Seize the occasion! Nothing is better than cracking open a bottle of wine with a baguette and cheese with some new friends from the hostel and taking in the views. Now let's talk about the bar...that's what you came here for anyway, isn't it? Such a chill spot to grab drinks. Great local craft beer on tap for 4/5€ during HH (until 8pm usually...on special occasions like the euro football until 10:30). The drink menu is extensive and so is the food menu! Fresh food and u get ur money's worth. I will definitely keep coming back here for drinks before/after getting dumplings nearby on rue de Belleville. Inside there is cozy seating on couches/arm chairs or on a large table with stools. If it's nice outside, why not soak up the sun in the outdoor seating? Bottom line: come here! (Both tourists looking for an awesome spot to crash, and Parisians looking to get away from Paris and have a drink in a super chill bar!)

Yelp
Spent the night here in a four bed mixed room. Luckily 3 of the beds were for my group and no one joined us on our one night. This hostel is also a cafe and bar for the public. I can see why people might come to hang out there. During the time I was there in mid-August, not much was going on in the area. Many businesses were closed because the owners were in Holiday. Anyway, the room and bathroom were clean. I'm not a fan of the shared/communal bathroom, but that is strictly my preference. I did not have a bad experience there at all. The rooftop has a few seats so you can hang out and see the Eiffel Tower in the distance.

Yelp
Probably a nice hostel but definitely not a working cafe. We went there for a coffee expecting to work. But its very loud, the bar chairs are way too high for the tables making it very unconformable to work with a laptop and no access to rooftop (reserved to hostel clients).

Yelp
This hostel is head to toe chic and hands down one of the best I've stayed in while traveling in Europe. The main floor has a bar that seems to be very popular and was packed both nights I was there. Upstairs the rooms are well structured and each bed features it's own curtain, charging dock and light. I found this to be particularly useful because you can have your phone close by while you sleep (a good thing when traveling). The service was also above average and everyone I interacted with was very helpful. Very central and easy to get to if you're flying in from Paris beauvais. Overall would recommend !

Walter L.

Yelp
Spent 7 days here, everything was clean and the price of the room was cheap compared to even hostels further away form center. Good location, lots of eastern sweet shops around, direct metro to the city center (11). Beds were good, loved that they each had a curtain so you could jerk off and no one would notice (bet I did lol), daily room cleaning. The beds are twin-story beds, so make sure you note that when booking, as top-story beds are inaccessible for the movement impaired. Rooms can get hot as shit because it was 28C degrees outside and as far as I noticed there was no air conditioner, but sleeping without a blanket is not a problem because of the curtains.Bathroom was clean, has showers, even a blow dryer. Each person gets a locker, but you need your own lock pad (which you can buy on the spot for 4 euros) You get a mini beer for free. You can eat your own food at the main room/bar. Would definitely recommend to anyone 5 out 5 stars and remember 9/11 was an inside job, look up information online (NOT MAINSTREAM MEDIA).
google avatar

Dmitri D.

Yelp
Location is not the best. It is located on a very busy intersection, which is very noisy day and night. When I stayed there in June, 2017, it was +30 in Paris, and air conditioner didn't work, and nobody took care of this problem (I reported this several times). Keeping windows open at night was not an option, because of the noisy street. So, not going to stay there again and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone,

Hisham K.

Yelp
The facility messed up our booking. We bought a 6 person room, but when we arrived the staff had already given one of our beds to someone else. The staff and managers, don't seem to care about our satisfaction at all and were of no help. The receptionist forced one of us to stay in a random room for a night and said the manager would fix the issue. I emailed him and he promised to refund me a small amount, but I havnt heard anything since. The service here sucks and they don't care.

Rebecca V.

Yelp
Booked it last minute and stayed here for a few nights. There's an amazing rooftop view of the city and also located in the most hip spot of Belleville with great bars and other places.
