Les Suites at The Cliff Bay - PortoBay (Funchal, Madeira) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Just outside Funchal, on a clifftop promontory overlooking the Atlantic, the original Cliff Bay is one of Madeira’s most upscale hotels. When the property next door went up for sale, the owners snapped it up, restoring its tiered gardens and a pair of century-old villas — and adding a new wing and a gorgeous infinity pool — to create the even more luxurious Les Suites. While there’s no doubt these, with their ultra-spacious layouts, sea-facing floor-to-ceiling windows, and lavish Greek marble bathrooms, are the more exclusive lodgings, guests will be glad to take advantage of the amenities at the neighboring hotel, including a spa, open-air Jacuzzis, direct access to the ocean, and the two-MICHELIN-Star Il Gallo d’Oro restaurant." - Tablet Hotels

The perfect stay! We have travelled all over Europe & this is one of our new favourites! The highlight is definitely the rooms - huge spacious suites with amazing amenities & modern bathrooms. The power of the shower is the best I’ve experienced for years. The AC is the best I’ve experienced in Europe (equivalent to Middle East/Asia standards!). The thoughtful gestures & turndown chocolates were very much appreciated. The overall pool area was okay - nice infinity pool on the ocean although relatively small, the spa is at the sister hotel, which feels less boutique & more mass market. The neighbouring Reid’s palace is beautiful for sunset drinks on the terrace however the rooms at the suites Cliff bay are way nicer so stay here & walk over there for an aperitif! I’m quite a fussy traveller & this was the first time in a long time I felt more comfortable in a hotel room than my own house/bed! We will 100% be back & have already recommended to friends. Special mention to Rosanna who checked us in - she was very welcoming & kind!

I literally cried tears of joy for how beautiful everything was. Absolutely stunning hotel and location. Restaurants are amazing, really delicious food and a good variety. The spa was so relaxing, the best massage I've ever had. Fitness rooms were well kept and spacious. The staff was incredible, they are so thoughtful and I could tell really loved their jobs and providing a nice experience for guests. I would absolutely stay here again. This hotel is one of the best in Funchal, every detail has been thought of and executed to perfection.

Just returned from our fourth stay at Les Suites and once again it never fails to please. We had the Prestige Package staying in a garden suite with our own private lawn overlooking the sea. ||We love the Prestige Package but were a little concerned that it might not be the same this time because of the temporary closure of Avista restaurant following a fire in June. Avista is, in our opinion, one of the best restaurants in Funchal but we needn't have worried! The hotel has introduced a replacement dining experience, Blue Lagoon at Night, located in the adjacent Cliff Bay on a deck overlooking the sea. The ambience and food quality was every bit as good as Avista and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. The service was impeccable although we must say a special shout out to Victor who looked after us both nights we dined there.||Our package also included a four course dinner in Il Gallo D'Oro , the Cliff Bay's Michelin 2* restaurant. The food was out of this world and again the service from the restaurant staff made it a truly memorable experience.||It must be a unique selling point of the company that the staff in each and every department are so happy and go that extra mile to ensure the guests . We have found this to be the case in all of the Portobay hotels that we have stayed in and is one of the reasons we keep returning year after year.||Thanks again for making our stay so realaxed and enjoyable and we look forward to seeing you next time.

We stayed at three hotels during our trip to Madeira and Les Suites at Cliff Bay was the most luxurious. If you can afford to stay here, you probably should. Photos do not do it justice. The suite was spectacular, rivaling the hotel rooms in Asia. Spacious, modern, clean, comfortable, and oceanfront. What stood out to me was how quiet the property is. After a day of hiking, I would go down to the pier and swim in the sea, lay out on the pool deck and then sit on the balcony and stare at the sea for hours, uninterrupted.||We arrived 90 minutes early and our room was not ready, so we were given drink vouchers for beer or wine and offered the opportunity to relax on the pool deck until checkin. The pool deck is stunning. I wish they would heat the jacuzzi beyond lukewarm, but we enjoyed the pool and had a large soaking tub in the room. ||Unfortunately, the Avista restaurant was closed due to a recent fire, so we did not fully experience the property. Our dinner reservations were cancelled, and while they did place us on the waitlist for Gallo D'Oro, we did not get called. They did provide two alternate dining experiences, but the Mediterranian option was on the pool deck of The Cliff Bay which was chaotic, so we didn't try it. We had breakfast at The Cliff Bay one morning which was average and very busy. After that, we opted for room service which was very good.||Pro tip- there are no pool towels in the room, at any of the pools at The Cliff Bay or on the swimming pier. After taking the two different elevators and walking down several levels to the swimming pier without encountering any towels, we were told that we would either have to go back to Le Suites for towels, or go up to the spa in The Cliff Bay (cannot be accomplished from any room at Le Suites without three elevator rides). ||Every member of the staff that we encountered was pleasant and unintrusive. ||Overall, the magnificent room that you get at Les Suites is a good value regardless of which resort amenities are available at your time of travel.

NEXT LEVEL LUXURY AT LES SUITES||Just back from Madeira Portugal where we stayed at the beautiful Les Suites at Cliff Bay a Luxurious Cliffside Hotel. From the moment you arrive until you depart the entire staff make you feel welcome and work extremely hard to ensure the Les Suites is the Next Level in Luxury accommodation. The parking lot at Les Suites is very small only accommodating about 5 cars but, the sister hotel Cliff Bay has adequate additional parking. The reception staff were great, got us checked into our room immediately upon arrival in the early afternoon. Everything throughout the hotel is high quality from the carpet and flooring to the incredible pictures adorning the walls and other artwork throughout the public areas. Our suite was lovely with a separate king-sized bedroom with superior blackout curtains. In the living room quality leather couch, a separate chair and table as well as a desk. Both the bedroom and living room have their own TV’s. The bedroom is very well equipped with a very comfortable king bed with quality linens and an assortment of pillows. The Wi-Fi throughout the hotel and in our suite was very good, the suite has numerous USB connection points for charging electronic devices. A beautiful bathroom with two sinks, huge bathtub and a very large glassed walk-in shower. The waterfall shower head and separate wand pressure is superior to most hotels I have stayed. Lots of superior quality toilet products are provided. There is a daily replenished min-bar in which the soft drinks are provided complimentary. Additionally, upon check in there was a delicious fresh fruit bowl that again was replenished daily. During our 9 nights stay we were given 3 complimentary bottles of champagne and an assortment of fresh baked goods. The balcony is very large with a clear glass protective railing two very comfortable outdoor teak chairs and comfy cushions as well as a couch for lazing about. The view from the balcony is directly out over the cliff to the Atlantic Ocean where you can watch plenty of pleasure boats cruising past the hotel. Les Suites has an incredible Infinity Pool looking right out over the Atlantic Ocean with lots of high-quality padded loungers and umbrellas. A very relaxing tranquil type environment with a well stocked bar that also provides snacks and ordered lunches. The landscaping throughout the entire property including the sister Cliff Bay Hotel is impeccable and the groundskeepers stay on top of it daily. Currently the hotel’s restaurant the Avista is closed due to a previous contained fire, to accommodate for this guest can have breakfast in their suites or at two restaurants at the Cliff Bay hotel. Both are excellent one is their 2-star Michelins restaurant serving to order the other the Rose Garden is both buffet and to order. There is a fantastic selection food, fruits, baked goods, juices etc. well beyond expectations and a beautiful setting and atmosphere inside or outside on the patio. The coffee is very good and they also offer a variety of specialty coffees, teas and the service is top notch. Breakfast was really a great way to start the day and everything we had was delicious. Cliff Bay has two pools one being actual salt water and direct access to the crystal-clear refreshing waters of the Atlantic Ocean. In my personal opinion Les Suites at Cliff Bay is a perfect resort hotel that would be especially suited to adults given is tranquil relaxing environment. Les Suites overall is next level in luxury accommodation that I would without reservation or hesitation recommended highly.

This place has everything - incredible location, great service and facilities plus delicious food. We enjoyed every part of our stay and can understand why people come back year after year. We particularly enjoyed being able to wander out on Estrada Monumental or down to Funchal to restaurants, swimming in the ocean and salt water pool, jaw-dropping views across the bay and really high levels of service. Thank you Cliff Bay, we will be back!

My second time to this Cliff Bay spa hotel and first time to Les Suites with husband. in general the service from airport pick up to departure was top notch. There was nothing that was too much (even when I came pouty at my room and Rosana at he front desk, agreed to change it straight away!). |Other little touches like I asked for a larger mug for my home bought coffee dripper and it was bought to the breakfast table every morning. Fresh flowers, cut fruit and bubbles on arrival. Everyone knew us by second day and we felt like we were VIPs. There had been a fire that meant Vista Asia and Mediterranean were closed but we were offered a magical evening by the seafront with an extraordinary menu, music and sommelier who made our night. |Les Suites had the added benefit of a dedicated reception, infinity pool, jacuzzi , outside bar and breakfast at Vista restaurant (if available - due to fire we were offered complimentary in room or any of the other breakfast services), as well as the facilities in the main hotel.|The spa treatments were decadent and unrushed BUT BOOK EARLY!!!|We are seasoned traveller and very particular and wanted for nothing. We had considered the much acclaimed Reids Hotel but from our visit for dinner and the difference in service, we agreed we made the right choice and it would not be our last visit to Cliff bay. Reids maybe dining off its previous reputation whereas the Cliff seems to respond to the importance of the building their reputation in the present. Well done to all - see you all soon

Les Suites at Cliff Bay provided an exemplary experience during our stay. The staff was welcoming and professional with a thoughtfulness in anticipating guests needs and addressing any unforeseen issues with care and urgency. Unfortunately, a fire occurred at one of the on-site restaurants during our stay causing notable damage. Management was exceptional in their response to the incident, rightfully placing the safety of their team members and guests as a top priority, while ensuring effective communication and accommodations for impacted team members and guests. ||Our room was beautiful, clean, quiet, relaxing, and provided an outstanding view of the sea (and the fireworks in the harbor). Every staff member we encountered was warm and professional. We will definitely return!

Yelp
The Avista restaurant is beautifully decorated with a gorgeous view. The seating is very comfortable, the drinks are good, the food is great. The shrimp and beef tartare starters are must-gets and the veal in beurre blanc was incredible. The rice that I got as a side was plain rice however it was the most flavorful plain rice I've ever had a restaurant. This would be a 5 star review had it not been for the terrible service. A member our party has a nut allergy and alerted our waiter to it and he kept asking her if it was just an intolerance or an allergy to which she kept replying that it was an allergy. He'd make a face and then take 5 minutes to write it in his notes. He barely checked on us throughout the night and proceeded to give us dirty looks when HE tripped near our table and almost spilled something on us. When we were ordering food (with the intention of taking some home so we could try more) he kept insisting it would be too much food for us and made us feel bad about ordering so much. I would have loved everything about this restaurant if it weren't for that waiter.

Yelp
A stunning hideaway! Gorgeous views and delicious food. Great experience guaranteed:) The first floor has fish, steak, pastas, all you could ever dream of, combined with the view it really might feel like a dream! The second floor is sushi only and is only open on weekends- chef's choice in sushi assortment but everything we got we loved so trust the chef! Either way, a reservation is pretty necessary so be sure to make that with them or the concierge at your hotel. Be sure to get a glass of Madeira wine with your Tiramisu! Also if you get cold, they have heaters and blankets for you :) Thank you to Leonardo and João for taking the best care of us!!!

Yelp
You will feel like you are in Positano or Torrey Pines, but better because this jewel box of a location remains relatively undiscovered by the masses. Yet every luxury demanded by even the most discerning international traveler is exceeded. Wow. Wow. And wow. Sit in the terrace for the view, then order a 5 star meal at Avista. Can't wait to return!

Yelp
It's a nice property but the service from the administration is ridiculously poor. The snobbery, unfriendliness, and bad management are nowhere approaching professional. Perhaps they didn't like us. We were repeatedly approached to ask if we were staying there and treated like were were trespassers. We were staying for over a week. Very odd. After a full week at the hotel and constant poor service and just weird interactions bordering on offensive, we asked for a late check out and were immediately told no. I mean, immediately. Like she was taking pleasure in it. Like we were begging from her. Normally a top quality hotel will at least pretend to check to see if anyone else is taking the room. Perhaps charge us more money? Whatever. We were given a hard no. Yes, soooo sorry we spent thousands of dollars at your hotel and asked for an extra hour. My bad. I recommend stopping by for tea, if you want to see the property. Reid's is nicer. Then again, there are a whole lot of nicer places on the island that don't require you to receive service from the hotel people, bordering on abusive rudeness, certainly when it comes to the hotel staff (the service at the restaurant is good, meaning pretty standard). I do notice that most of these Yelp reviews are for the restaurant, not the hotel. Tripadvisor might be different. If you want a superior experience, look elsewhere.

Yelp
Cliff Bay is a five-star, European spa of great style and refinement. Staff, food, facilities and service are top notch. Plan on dressing for dinner. I highly recommend the resort to American travelers seeking a high-end spa experience; Cliff Bay is a well-kept secret of German, French and UK guests. Dining, swimming in the sea, wine by the pool, spa treatments and working with reception on excursions around the island (whale watching, hiking and more) are all fabulous. My recommendations: join the Prestige club online first. Choose a premium package room with daily breakfast, and a water view. Book hotel dining reservations several weeks prior to arrival (at least). But if you don't, there are many options. Not to worry. Relax!

Yelp
We had a great sty the food is good but pricey. The staff at Avista (restaurant and pool) was great and fun to be around. These people deserve 5/5 The reason why only 3 out of 5 The management of this place is mediocre at best. When we arrived we had a lengthy and exhausting process of checking in. But where I lost my confidence in the establishment was when a 400$ bracelet went missing after the room was cleaned. The management was in no way accommodating or even thought of taking any responsibility and blatantly said "well go to the police then" (it was our last day). Their "investigation" into the matter was a bad joke. "We asked the girl who cleaned the room and she never saw it" -- sorry but not good enough. Hotel management was not trying to help but was defensive and deflected. Even trying to get them to recognize this incident at all was a fight. It was handled poorly and reflected atrociously kn the entire stay.
