We visited L’Étiquette hoping to enjoy the warm, knowledgeable wine atmosphere it’s praised for. Unfortunately, our experience was very disappointing and quite the opposite. I attempted to place our order in French, listening to the owner about which wines to try. When he asked me a question quickly and I apologised (in French), he rolled his eyes, and then repeated the same question a moment later in perfect English. From then on, he largely ignored us: barely acknowledging our presence, didn’t respond when we thanked him, nor reply goodbye as we left.
As someone who makes an effort with the language and was genuinely interested in his wine recommendations, I found his behaviour unnecessarily dismissive. It felt as if he was unwilling to engage with anything but fluent French speakers or wine-insiders.
There are many great wine bars in Paris where passion, patience, and respect go hand in hand - this sadly was not one of them for us.
