Leung's Chop Suey House

Google
I got the spare ribs with lemon chicken and fried rice plate. The spare ribs were mainly just bones and sauce. There was more daikon than meat. The fried chicken pieces were ok-ish, but the lemon sauce didn't taste right. The fried rice was ok. I also ordered 2 pork hash as well, and those were probably sitting there awhile because they were pretty dried out. Went there for lunch, but the food wasn't even freshly made. If you're gonna charge an arm and a leg for the food, at least make it enjoyable to eat. Some days the food is good and some days the food isn't all that great... what made me even more upset were the won ton. I got an order of 12. More wonton wrapper and a little tiny piece of meat. This is something I could've easily made at home myself....I know back in the day this place was awesome. Now, just like some other places in Hilo, it sucks🫤👎🏼👎🏼

Google
This has been a staple whenever I visit the big island. Awesome cake noodles.

Google
Took my wife to try this place today. We couldn’t even barely eat the food it was honestly so bad. I would’ve rather eaten Panda Express which is fast food which is just sad unfortunately. First off there was more bones and cartilage in my chicken than meat and nearly cracked a tooth. My wife’s noodles were very dry and bland, my fried rice had about as much flavor as steamed rice. Nothing had any flavor except the red pork which was incredibly salty. To have spent $40 for nothing edible was a disappointment. The lady and vibe was very much hurry up and order, and the kitchen was incredibly dirty. I hope they are able to turn the place around as I appreciate local food, but tonights dinner essentially ended up in the trash and we need to get something else.

Google
We ordered a lunch plate with three topping options for $13. Took it to a park down the street and enjoyed a nice picnic.

Jeremiah S.

Google
One of the long time best Chinese joints in hilo for a quick bite that’s quality. Their char siu is my favorite compared pretty much most of the lunch type Chinese places. They have a nice buffet type set up where you can choose what you want. Pay by the choice. Great place !

Mahealani M.

Google
My favorite Chinese food in Hilo! Customer service isn't always great but the food is by far worth it. Really good price too.

Pono G.

Google
This is a classic stop I like the crispy stuff here easy location right on the main stretch by the airport

Pat F

Google
First time I walked in this place I did feel like a fish out of water, but that's cause after a decade of going here is clear they know their regulars, which I become. But from that first day there I've never had Chop Suey like this! Their black bean Chicken is my favorite, and always generous portions 🙏🙌✨

Keith K.

Yelp
The beef broccoli cake noodles is my favorite delicious!!!! Pork hash is a must really worth it.

Yelp
When we ordered for the amount of 5 people for certain dishes, they came in such small containers. The price you pay for the amount you get is too small. We had to go to L and L to get the trays and paid way less than what this place gave us.
google avatar

Yelp
Me and my cousin went 1st time. This is not ordinary Chinese food. The orange chicken was white. I've made orange chicken before and it tasted like orange chicken. The only thing to me was good was the 4 shrimps I got. The beef and broccoli was not good. The Chinese pork that was red was ok not the greatest. PLEASE DONT GO THERE! It's not all that good. Not real Chinese food. Maybe it was cooked by Chinese people but not the real deal. Mc. Donald would of been better

David W.

Yelp
Years of good Chinese food. Good portions. Delicious grindz guaranteed to return here!!

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Big Island. Parking can get busy but once you walk in, there is so much food options.

Yelp
I recently went to Leung's and it's been a long time since I've visited. It brings back nostalgic memories of growing up. What people need to understand that this is Chinese food with the influences of all the cultural histories of Hawaii. The food was delicious just as I remembered. I honestly enjoyed seeing the owner there sitting and making the wontons and greeting all the customers. I wish they would open later, but I understand our little old Hilo town does close early & it's what gives it a great charm. If you want rice cakes there's phenomenal! I love the roast duck and the roast pork as well! One of the places I would go back to over and over for the "non authentic" Chinese food.

Elena B.

Yelp
What I love about this place besides the food... the nostalgia of it. The aunties and Gramma in the back. Food is good, all kine selections. Price is decent.. approx 13-15.00 and they load up the servings. A lot of food for the price. Always busy but the line moves quickly. Never had a bad experience regarding service. These are the kind of establishments that you want to stick around. So many are closing nowadays. Will continue to support this business.

Yelp
We had a delicious sit-down, family-style birthday lunch with chicken chop suey, char siu pork, pork cake noodles, and beef chow fun. I told the server it was my daughter's birthday and they graciously brought her a lovely fortune cookie with a red bow on it. The food was scrumptious, and the service was outstanding. We will most definitely be back!
google avatar

Lina O.

Yelp
Best chinese food made to order in Hilo. Service is excellent. Ambience is lit. Love the manapuas, pork hash, gau gee, lemon chicken, pork tofu. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Lorna M.

Yelp
The people are very nice, buuuuut the food is inconsistent. Sometimes It's good and on other days it's not. That wasn't enough for me to completely avoid this place. Unfortunately, I order Ong choy with harm ha and let me say, while I don't know How to cook Chinese food, I've been eating it all over the island and across pacific and back my whole life. Anyone who knows me, knows I love Chinese food. So I know what I'm Ong choy with harm ha or garlic taste like. I couldn't believe what I was tasting... it was burnt... like eating a soupy burnt soup with burned veggies. I was so disappointed because this place was my convenient go to place. It was so bad tasting that it amazes me that they were willing to serve it. Never again. So long Leung's.... I can do bad on my own.

Funke D.

Yelp
I don't think Chinese people eat here. Had the orange chicken and Kau yuk two choice plate today. Based on the sheer amount of food they gave, you can tell that leungs builds its reputation on plates with plenty food. I give them 4 stars for portion size. It's just that the food is not real good. The chicken was freshly cooked, but the actual chicken meat tasted old. Like it had been frozen for a long time. The Kau yuk was just salty and not so good. So if you are looking for volume, this is your place. If you are looking for taste and quality ingredients l, this is not the place.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst representation of Chinese food I have ever eaten in my life. Sweet & Sour Pork Fluorescent orange sickening sweet sauce with daikon (?) or cabbage chunks and what appears to be pickle. A few pieces inedible pork jerky rounded out the contents. No pineapple. No vegetables. Absolutely disgusting. Beef & Broccoli A couple of microscopic pieces of beef with broccoli in a tasteless sauce. Lemon Chicken Hideously overcooked breaded chicken chopped to order with a glowing yellow sauce. One point the the basically edible fried rice. Why do so many people eat fast food in Hilo? Panda Express is not great food but it's a step up from Leungs.

Wa D.

Yelp
Love the variety of dishes. They make good food and it looks clean when I go in. Love that they are also a double points business with my Hawaiian airlines credit card.
google avatar

Kellie D.

Yelp
Service was awesome she was very polite and quick. I ordered from their line fried rice, lemon chicken and pork tofu. The fried rice was a bit better than the other restaurant down the street with a similar name. Portions are more than I can eat in one sitting and prices are reasonable. I can't say I was disappointed nor can I say I would rush back. Parking is limited.

Cheyenne R.

Yelp
My Order of Beef Broccoli cake noodles with barely any noodles. Total waste of money.

steven s.

Yelp
Leung's special cake noodles no meet just vegetables and 5 cake noodles. So small and not worth it, so sad.
google avatar

Erin C.

Yelp
Lots of choices from the quick-serve counter! For me, I was expecting more depth of flavor in all the dishes I tried: 1/2 fried rice, 1/2 chowmein, tofu in sauce, and orange chicken. The food looked like it had been sitting on the hot counter for some time, so actually choosing a food item by looks was challenging. 1 * amount of food choices 1 * for cleanliness I would try another Chinese restaurant before going back to Leung's for now.

Yuzen Y.

Yelp
I was served by an older lady when I visited today. I placed an order for chicken and she proceeded to fill the order when another customer (seems like he must have been a regular based on their conversation) came in and ordered the same chicken. The lady had the nerve to ask me if i could wait for the chicken because she wanted to give the rest to the other customer! I've never encountered this kind of service, EVER!

Jessica B.

Yelp
Ordered 2 won ton mein with the noodles separate from the soup. When I was adding some noodles and veggies to a bowl I noticed 2 cockroaches with my noodles. Waste of money, this place used to be good. I live far so getting a refund is just humbug at this point.

Tony A.

Yelp
Food is always delicious. Filipina employee needs to have proper training when dealing with customers. She has a bad attitude.
google avatar

Gary K.

Yelp
Don't know what happened with the food that I used to love. 2nd time going to order takeout in the past two months and the noodles were not fully cooked, this time ordered orange chicken also and it was really hard. Pork tofu was ok but sad to say quality went way down from just a year ago. May be my last time for takeout at this place.

Come on S.

Yelp
WHAT HAPPENED??? This place used to be great years ago. Now their food simply isn't the same as before. Not as flavorful or overly salted (probably to hide the blandness). Doesn't feel nor look good for all customers in the line and seated to see someone (especially the owner/manager) preparing raw food right on a customer table out in the open in plain view either. That's what you have your rest kitchen for.
google avatar

Maile J.

Yelp
Our go to for Chinese food We only get our usual lemon chicken, char siu pork, & fried rice. can't go wrong!

Ellen N.

Yelp
Went at 10ish and they had told me everything I wanted wasn't ready yet and to come back at 11. Bought some manapua and it was dry .

Ray C.

Yelp
This is the most disgusting Chinese food in Hilo, I could venture to say in all of Hawai'i. We came as a family, each took one bite then threw it in the trash. The place should be bulldozed for a nice park or parking lot. The cooks should have a restraining order placed on them from coming within 2 miles of a kitchen. Their customers are locals who knew the owner for decades, that's about it as for the clientele. I guess you get use to swill if you eat it long enough. They give Chinese food a bad name.
google avatar

Elle V.

Yelp
Whenever I come here I have the wor ton mein soup, which is a supersized bowl of noodle soup with vegetables, meat, and won ton. There are multiple items on the menu with similar names, so I usually double-check that I'm ordering the one with noodles, vegetables, meat, and won tons all boiled in yummy broth. There is also a version with "gau gee" instead of "won ton," the only difference is that they are a different shape -- their won ton and gau gee actually have the same ingredients. This is addicting to me. It is a special day when I have the time to eat lunch at Leung's. You can also add this Chinese mustard with a true kick, but the taste elevates the whole thing to another level. (I tend to put the tiniest bit on my chopstick with a whole lot of food and need to wash it down with water, but then again I don't really eat spicy food.) The last time we were here, it seemed like there were a couple of families celebrating graduation from UH-Hilo, which was nice to see. It is a low-key and casual place with good and plentiful food. Seating consists of a couple of booths that can probably seat 6 or 7 people, with a few smaller tables. The building itself is pretty old because it's been there a long time. It is a testament to their good food that this business has been able to survive the ups and downs of economic conditions all these years. Go early. If parking is full, come back another time. Note that they are closed in Sundays. Service can be slow, so go when you have time, especially if it is crowded and especially if you want something like wor ton mein soup that is made once you order. I have never been here for dinner. Someday I will also try their other food, but so far I can't seem to tear myself away from that wor ton mein soup.

Yelp
With the variety of Asian foods in Hilo, our preference is Leung's They've been our choice forever because of the service and choices. We recommend them to everyone.

Stansi L.

Yelp
Always satisfied with the taste of my favorites! Friendly staff and owners. Even though no dining in, I still pick up food from them.

Guy K.

Yelp
Ordered Shrimp chow fun, char sim fried rice and chicken with mushrooms and mixed vegetables. The chow fun was over cooked and mushy. The fried rice didn't have observable char siu and lacked flavor. The chicken with mushrooms and mixed vegetables also lacked flavor and was drowning in overly thickened brownish gravy. This is not the place to go when you are craving Chinese food.

Rick L.

Yelp
This is how much pork in their Manapua. 3 were like this. If they are going to cut back on expenses, then they should lower the cost of each Manapua. Don't know if they purchase these from a vendor, or make it themselves, however, quality control please. In Chung Wah Kah Kam from Honolulu comes to Hilo, their Manapua will blow everyone else's manapua away.

Reece N.

Yelp
It's not a trip to my home town without a stop or two at Leung's. The pork hash and gau gee are so good and the steam table is filled with local-style Chinese food. This isn't ABC but rather authentic evolutions of many old-school Chinese dishes influenced by Hawai'i residents' tastes. I always bring visitors here because it's a touchstone of Hilo's melting pot of dishes.

Yelp
"You don't sew with a fork, so I see no reason to eat with knitting needles." - Miss Piggy, on Chinese food Call me crazy, but I do actually prefer eating with chopsticks! I just feel so much more dexterous when I eat with them. That said, the food from Leung's is best eaten any way, just as long as it gets to your mouth. This place is a favorite among locals for good Chinese food. Offering great eats straight from their steam table or by order. Any time I go here, I know that I'm going to eat well. All of their food from the steam table is pretty darn fresh, considering that they're almost constantly having to refill it due to the amount of customers that they get. They also always load up my plate with very generous portions, which I think is a huge plus in their favor. I mean, there's nothing worse than a place that'll charge you an arm and a leg for a rinky dink little amount of food. Either way, that's not something to be concerned about here. I've never really dined in at Leung's, and I think it is supposed to be a primarily take-out place, but they do have a pretty decently sized dining area in the restaurant. Some of my favorite things to get here are their sweet and sour spare ribs and beef and broccoli. With those, ya can't go wrong. I also make a point of getting some good ol' fried rice with all my combination plates. All in all, Leung's is just a really solid local spot to get great Chinese food. I always like eating here, so I do feel inclined to recommend it to anyone else who is looking for some tasty Chinese food here in Hilo.

Neil T.

Yelp
This is the "old" fashion Chinese Style Food that reminded me of the 1960's. During Covid 19 this is only take out, but the food was delicious. I had the noodles, mixed with onions, and bean sprouts. Then I added Char-su, and Roast Pork with crispy skin. This brings back good memories of yesteryear. They "gave" us a container of Chinese Mustard Sauce, mixed with Soy Sauce. This was made 'in-house". This is one of the BEST Value, for the money. It is very busy during the lunch hour. The crowed parking lot is the only negative to this place. I'm waiting for someone to lead me to a better old fashion Chinese-Kitchen style restaurant on the Big Island. This could be the BEST Chinese Style /Chop Suey restaurant. Don't expect fancy furniture, do expect old ladies sitting down stuffing won-ton skins with their own hands, and a small dish of water. The restrooms are only for the employees. One last suggestion, take your lunch box with a can of soda, to the Queen Liliokalani Gardens. There are plenty of picnic tables outside if it is NOT raining. An enjoyable meal. I will be going back soon to try other dishes that making. I might even try the beef "tripe".
google avatar

Darrell P.

Yelp
The food here is decent for what you pay for. Never did this place fail me. Eat in or take out, the food is still good. The roast duck and spare ribs are my favorites. Although the spareribs are manini pieces, its ono with the daikon and pineapples added in. When I order a three choice, the spareribs go right on the steamed rice. Another thing this place has is their fresh mini gin dui. You'll have to wait a while for it but its worth the wait. You might want to wait for it to cool down a bit before you bite into it. The parking lot is small. The same way you pull in is the same way you reverse out unless there's room to turn around which is a lot more safer.

Queenie I.

Yelp
I love this place. I have since I was a kid. I honestly wait every year when I go home to come to Leung's to eat the lemon chicken = my favorite! I like the selection of food they have here and the portion to price is always good. The cake noodles are ON POINT! Just writing this review has made me wish my annual trip came sooner.

Brian S.

Yelp
The food here was good...long time ago. Everything was greasy, the orange chicken needed more flavor, the red pork needed more flavor, the fried rice needed more flavor, etc. Prices were comparable but the magic of the food is not there. Different generation I guess.
google avatar

LaurieAnn L.

Yelp
Everyone in my Ohana loved the food we purchased. It was the first time for us as we live on Oahu. We will definitely be back the next time we are in town.
google avatar

Janelle D.

Yelp
By far my favorite Chinese restaurant in the whole world (and I've made my way around). They have an incredible selection of vegetarian dishes. My favorite by far is their cake noodles. Haven't quite found a place that just them justice. Leung's also has incredibly friendly staff. My family goes very frequently to the point they know our order by heart (even if we call in on the phone). Unfortunately, I don't live in Hilo anymore, but every time I come back to visit, Leung's is always my first stop!
google avatar

Tiger S.

Yelp
While making my plate lunch the woman behind the counter turned her head only slightly when sneezing. Her nose became runny and she started snorting up her snot. She finally blew her nose then handed me my food without washing her hands....I left immediately!! No amount of Hawaiian Airline miles was worth that!!!

Bargain Items G.

Yelp
Great place for lunch plates. Wide variety of food. Love their manapua and pork hash. Also love the roast duck, char Sui, and lechon.
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Wow this place is delicious!! We got the orange chicken, broccoli beef, chicken fried rice, the chicken chow mein, and of course the chicken chop Suey. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Tuts W.

Yelp
Been going here for years. The won ton min is great on cold, rainy Hilo days. The best crispy gau gee n cake noodles ever!!
google avatar

Naomi P.

Yelp
I wish there was a negative star. I don't think this place would pass a food inspection and the food was the worst Chinese I've had - like ever.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
I've been going to leungs since I was a child. Still love their food. This is the only place I will eat chinese. Leungs, and canton kitchen. Whenever someone asks where is the best chinese place in Hilo, I say leungs! I always get half rice half noodles, an order of shrimp canton, and beef broccoli. Their eggrolls and charsui are also good. Now I want leungs, lol.
google avatar

Eve D.

Yelp
Leung's house cake noodles and some manapua are all you need to make your day! Don't get this confused with the other Ling's or Leung's places out there - this one is right on Rt. 11 in a small red building. They are extremely friendly and can help you make a selection but honestly you'll want the cake noodles. The house version has shrimp, chai sui pork, duck, chicken, and fried pork along with tons of veggies in a thick and delicious gravy. A taste of everything. When you enter the restaurant you'll see a buffet-type counter at the opposite side, you can order to-go or sit-in from here or you can take a seat to be waited on. We saw tons of locals getting take-out on their way home from work so you know this is THE place to get Chinese food. Some of the kitchen workers sit at the table nearest the soda fridge and make eggrolls or snap the stems off peas while they joke around with each-other. You just shouldn't miss this if you're in Hilo!

Yelp
Leung's Chop Suey House has been a family favorite for many years. We go there on a regular basis; so much that we can walk in the door and they already know our order! It's a family owned business and we always receive friendly service from them. Our order has always stayed the same, with little variation here and there. We really enjoy the tofu & broccoli cake noodles, egg fu yung (with sauce on top), lemon chicken, and special beef. Leung's makes their cake noodles in house and it's FRESH and crispy and just so delicious. I've been to other Chinese restaurants in Hilo that serve cake noodles and it's more soggy, like it's been frozen and then thawed to order. The food has always been consistent and the taste and quality is always there. At first glance, Leung's may not seem like a place to find quality Chinese food, but don't let the appearance fool you! My husband is a plumber and has done work in their kitchen and he says it's really clean, so I have no issues believing that the food is prepared in a sanitary environment. Give Leung's a try. You won't be disappointed. There's a reason they've been voted the best Chinese restaurant in East Hawaii for years!
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Love you Leung's Chop Suey House. This is one of the biggest reason to be in Hilo. Yummmm Noodle cake! Mahalo!
google avatar

Alex G.

Yelp
Let's put it this way: Leung's is doing it right! Huge portions for cheap prices. The food is so delicious and nostalgic. The flavors are what you can expect from Hawaii's take on chop suey cuisine. Order the "3-choice plate" and you'll be glad you did. There are so many mouth-watering and appetizing choices to select from. You get a choice of fried noodles or fried rice to start then your choices. I got the choi sum, orange chicken, and char siu. Don't bother with the orange chicken though... Too much breading and chicken was dry, tough, and over-cooked. It was a bad choice. The home made char siu Manapua is my favorite in Hilo so far. I tried a piece of the lup cheong (Chinese sausage) which was expensive for one small piece. It was too greasy and oily, served at room temperature. Would not try that again. The rice cake for desert was freaking awesome for not having eaten it in over 4 years! Overall, the quality of the food, the portions (enough for two grown men to share one 3 choice plate), the price, and service will get my repeat visits!

Yelp
Food is ready fast. I went with my boyfriend and his dad today. My boyfriend and I got the 2 choice plate and his dad got the soup that everyone seemed to be getting there today. The waitress told us it's because of the weather. It looked delicious like a ramen filled with all things good, wholesome, and comforting. I'm very jealous that I didn't get it. My plate consisted of chow mein (standard), chicken, and zucchini. The boyfriend had what looked like char sui, fried rice, and eggplant. The eggplant is delicious! I would get a plate of just that. Friendly service and an understated atmosphere, good prices too. I recommend coming here if you want some comfort food. Especially on a rainy day like this.
