Iconic NYC Cookiemaker Levain Bakery is Headed to Williamsburg | Eater NY

"I note that after months of speculation and many customer requests, Levain Bakery is finally headed to Brooklyn: it will open July 1 in Williamsburg at 164 N. Fourth Street (between Bedford and Driggs Avenues). The menu at the new bakery will be similar to its other locations and will include the bakery’s newest concoction, a gooey two-chip chocolate chip cookie. Co-owners Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald have been serving their cult-favorite cookies on the Upper West Side and in Harlem for more than 25 years, and with two new locations that opened recently on the Upper East Side and in Noho and plans to go national (with a site to open in either Boston, Chicago, or Washington, D.C.), the Williamsburg shop brings Levain’s total New York locations to seven and marks its first expansion into Brooklyn." - Luke Fortney

Google
The chocolate chip cookie from here has inspired a lot of highly viewed recipes, Instagram photos, and TikTok thumbnails. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to walnuts - so rather than the more famous version that includes walnuts, I went with the two-chip chocolate chip cookie version I don't think I've had a cookie like this one before. The outside is just perfect - so crispy, and there's a real firmness to it that you don't often find with cookies. Normally, pressing down on a cookie results in it collapsing in on itself, pressing down on this just had it pressing back up at you with the same force. This hardness was present both on the top and bottom, and it was perfect The real impressive part, though, was the inside. It really was magical. It's underbaked by *just* the right amount, so that it gives you a bit of the flavor of raw cookie dough. When you pull the two sides apart, the gooeyness of the chocolate chips is really apparent, and it has the right amount of stretch before relinquishing its grip on the other half. Again, it's hard for me to express how fantastic the texture of the dough on the inside is. I've never had anything like it in another cookie Maybe the only downside was I think there was too much chocolate. A lot of people might find this a positive, but I actually preferred eating the parts of the cookie that were just the dough without the chocolate chips. Maybe that's just me though It cost around $5, which is a little expensive for a cookie, but this cookie is also massive. Like it could easily feed two people Overall, I think this is the best cookie I've ever had. 9.25/10

Google
Such a great spot for extra yumminess! We loved the dark chocolate peanut butter cookie Thank you Clint for your assistance in deciding a cookie flavor and warming it up. Truly fantastic! We will always use this route to go home ;)

If you’re looking for a high-end cookie that actually fills you up and makes you happy, you have to try Levain Cookies. These aren’t your typical chocolate chip cookies — they’re crispy on the outside, perfectly chewy on the inside, and absolutely delicious. My kids love them, and I honestly can’t wait to get more.

Jesse Y.

Google
Heard so much about their famous chocolate chip walnut cookie and boy it did not disappoint. Massively oversized cookie loaded with walnuts and gooey chocolate chip. A bit steep at $5.75 per cookie but heck, not every day everyone gets to enjoy a calorie bomb cookie such as this. This Levain is bright, spacious and clean with a cheerful staff.

Maid C.

Google
Levain Bakery in Williamsburg is one of the best dessert spots in Brooklyn. The moment you walk in, the smell of fresh-baked cookies hits you, and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. Their famous oversized cookies truly live up to the hype — warm, gooey, and perfectly balanced. The chocolate chip walnut is incredible, and the dark chocolate peanut butter chip is a must for chocolate lovers. The shop is clean, bright, and a great stop whether you’re grabbing a quick treat or bringing a box home. If you’re in the area, Levain Bakery is absolutely worth the visit.

Google
Levains makes the best cookies ever. And so great to have a location in Brooklyn. You can’t go wrong with the OG chocolate chip walnut cookie but my new fave is the caramel coconut. So good. And if you can, enjoy them straight out of the oven all warm and melty. Yum!! Vee is awesome and will take care of you.

Dayra D.

Google
The best part is when you step in, you’re greeted by the warm aroma of freshly baked cookies that instantly put you in a good mood. But what really makes this spot (Williamsburg) stand out is the vibe. The music they play is everything. They have the perfect soundtrack to enjoy your sweet treats. The staff is super friendly, and they really seem to get the balance between good food and good energy. Highly recommend for anyone who wants a treat that tastes as good as it feels!

Google
This place was the perfect spot for celebratory cookies after (spectating) the NYC marathon. This was my first time here and the Double chocolate PB cookie did not disappoint! It was rich, gooey, and warm. We were helped today by Corey who is super kind and came to check on us to make sure everything tasted great. Will definitely be back next time I visit!

Yelp
Levian lived up to the hype in my opinion! Tried the fall chocolate chunk, chocolate chip walnut, and dark chocolate chocolate chip flavors. Am not a huge fan of fall spiced things but the fall chocolate chunk cookie was really good. My favorite is the chocolate chip walnut, great flavor and texture especially with the crunchy walnut bits. Order and get food at the counter, and there is some cafe seating inside. One cookie is around $6 which is a little on the expensive side, but they are pretty large and very filling. Worth a try if you are visiting NY!
google avatar

Alicia L.

Yelp
I have never been more disappointed in bread. It was extremely dense and dry. +1 star because the staff were nice
google avatar

Maggie B.

Yelp
Levain is consistently ranked as one of the top bakeries in NYC and their cookies definitely live up to the hype. They are thick, gooey on the inside, and crunchy on the outside. The caramel coconut chocolate chip is my favorite. I'm usually not a coconut fan, but the flavor is subtle enough. The two chip chocolate chip cookie is also top notch. I ordered delivery from this location and the delivery person was waiting for my order for nearly two hours. I'd imagine their in-person service is a lot faster but seems like operationally, they were having a very off day.

Yelp
WOW! one of the most decadent, flavorful and sweet cookies I ever had. I finally made my way over here, and so happy I finally did. the cookie was very soft and warm and delicious. It is really so recommended for dessert lovers. I also had a slice of the lemon cake and it was soft and sweet and perfect amount of lemon. friendly staff. I highly recommend stopping by for a sweet treat
google avatar

Yelp
An absolute must when visiting New York! The perfect crisp on the outside with an ooey gooey center. I got the chocolate chip walnut classic cookie and it paired so well with their iced latte with almond milk.
google avatar

Elaine O.

Yelp
Had to try this spot for their cookies and got the regular chocolate chip. I don't think I got a fresh one because it wasn't as gooey inside but still good nonetheless. These cookies are massive and very filling, which is why they're $6 which is a little pricey. But of course this is the spot to treat yourself to satisfy the sugar cravings. Would love to come back to try more flavours.
google avatar

Sanchit K.

Yelp
Had this place for a while in my bucket list but whenever I'm in the city I always used to find a huge line of waiting customers which always discouraged me from getting inside. Well luckily this location isn't crowded and the service is pretty quick whereas the vibe is pretty chilled. The order was quick. I went for their original chocolate chip walnut cookie, it was served warm and fresh which made me understand why this place is so highly recommended by people. The taste was really great whereas the chocolate chip was melting in my mouth, I felt the amount of butter in the cookie was a bit high as it felt a little greasy but overall I was satisfied!
google avatar

Carol G.

Yelp
I ordered the new lemon cookie, my go to peanut butter and chocolate, and the must have chocolate chip walnut, which was the first cookie that was created in the initial process. The history behind these cookies is a very interesting story. You will love reading the history behind the walnut chocolate chip favorite cookie!

Yelp
Levain Bakery lives up to its hype! Whenever I have high expectations of a place, I usually end up a little disappointed and think that it's just a social media phase. BUT, this was not the case for Levain. I ordered the Chocolate Chip Walnut cookie, and it was delicious! Yes, it's overloaded with sweetness, but for a sweet tooth like me, this was definitely one of the best cookies I've had. It was huge, filled with lots of chocolate chips and walnuts, all for just $5! Slowly breaking the cookie in half is so satisfying as it reveals the abundance of chocolate chips and walnuts. So make sure to have that perfect video for your Instagram, lol. Other places specializing in cookies have a higher price point, so I was quite surprised here. Luckily, when I went, there was no line at all, but the store quickly became flooded with customers as soon as I left. They have excellent customer service that can also give you recommendations for their favorite cookie if you're having trouble choosing one.

Yelp
What's not to love about levain bakery and their ginormous cookies?? I've been a fan for some time and have mostly been to the Manhattan one but this location is also just as good and great staff! Super friendly and cool staff and also very patient with me coming back to the counter to order more cookies for souvenirs for my friends. I would say my top fave flavors is still the chocolate chip walnut and the dark chocolate peanut butter ones, but the double chocolate chip seems to be a fan favorite as well for the double chocolate chip portions with every bite. They also have cute levain tote bags for about $20 each and you bet I got myself one after carrying my friend's levain bakery tote bag - very sturdy after carrying 3 bottles of vitamin water. They have one design with a taxi and one with a bicycle. Love it!!

Yelp
Best cookies ever ! I have them for breakfast sometimes. Great service & good ambiance.
google avatar

Yelp
Blessssss They have a Brooklyn location! Not the OG, but that's ok. They gotta share the goods. I walked in and immediately heard K-pop. I did not expect that, but I enjoyed the vibes. I got the walnut chocolate chip cookie. It was soooo goooey and soooo delicious. Ugh. I am salivating just writing this review. I saved some for the next day. It was still as delicious, if not better. I loved the touch of walnuts. The cookie be thicc.
google avatar

Anna J.

Yelp
After all this hype I have heard, I finally got the chance to try Levain bakery! Thankfully we stumbled upon it while in Brooklyn so it was perfect place to take a pit stop while walking around. It was not busy at all so we were able to be helped immediately! I got the dark chocolate chip cookie and my friend got the 2 chip chocolate chip cookie. Both cookies were soft and delicious. The dark chocolate chip cookie was rich and moist and the perfect amount of chocolate and just unbelievable. The 2 chip was your classic and it was just perfect. You honestly cannot go wrong with the cookies on this menu. I wish we had been hungrier so we could have tried more because I'm sure they would be just as great. Lives up to the hype and definitely worth the stop.
google avatar

Priya K.

Yelp
I swear to god I think heaven melted inside my mouth. This cookie was so soft and warm and gooey, it made my whole day.
google avatar

Saasha G.

Yelp
Definitely a solid 5 stars! I've been told about these cookies for over 10 years now but never tried it. A stop at the Apple Store around the corner and a walk past the store led to me to purchase one chocolate chip walnut cookie. It was gooey and sweet and warm. But soooo big I had to eat it in to sitting with a glass of milk each time. It was well worth the hefty 5 dollars.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
This place is 10/10! I was wondering if it was just hype since so many people go there and $6 for 1 cookie sounds like a lot if you ask me. There were a lot of people in line when I went and the staff were really nice. The ambiance of the Williamsburg location seems more like a grab and go vs somewhere I would want to hang out and eat. They did have chair there though so technically you could. I wanted to go here because I needed to find something that had both regular items as well as gluten free dairy free. After eating the cookies I understand why they are $6. First of all they are huge and heavy like holding one feels like you are holding a boulder. Despite how dense the cookie is it was flavorful and amazing!! I seriously cannot wait to go back.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
The chocolate chip walnut is where it's at! The fall pumpkin cookie was not good yall. It had a weird aftertaste and was trying to give pumpkin vibes, but wasn't pumpkin lol service was great and the ambiance was clean. Swing by to grab a cookie on the go.
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
We LOVE levain! The gluten free cookies are $1 more than the regular chocolate chip cookies. Always worth every bite!
google avatar

JiHae L.

Yelp
I would come here whenever I'm in this part of Williamsburg. It is near many restaurants, and the area is bustling with tourists and residents. Good area to be located at so they run out of flavors sometimes. The cookies here are so good. Not many places can match the taste and texture of it. I go just to get the cookies to bring home for dessert. I really enjoy the oatmeal raisin cookies, and now there's a new flavor called the caramel coconut chocolate chip cookie. It wasn't all that I hyped it up to be in my head, plus I'm a bit biased as I'm not a huge coconut fan. But all in all, I'll be returning again as this is my fourth time, and it never seems to get old.
google avatar

Julliette S.

Yelp
The cookies were amazing, however the coffee wasn't. There was this chemically taste to it. Not sure if my taste buds are only used to cheap and Starbucks coffee or if was off? Lol The customer service wasn't good. Girl behind the counter seemed bothered. Absolutely 0 enthusiasm. After mentioning that it was our first time and we were taking a little long to decide the girl seemed annoyed. But anyway, the cookies were delicious, coffee cake was okay and the Raspberry Bomboloncini was the absolute best.
google avatar

Marin C.

Yelp
A very kind person sent me some cookies. They arrived on the doorstep via UPS. We tried the oatmeal raisin since that's my dad's favorite. I will heat it next time. The slightly doughy center was nice. Chonky cookies. Noms.
google avatar

Nicole B.

Yelp
I actually didn't love this as much as i thought i would. I was in Williamsburg after my sugaring appointment, and just so happened to stumble upon this bakery. As a NY'er, we hear about all these coveted places, and i feel like Levain is one of them. I decided to ditch my diet for the moment and grab a cookie to see what the hype was about. The indoor was great. The service was great as well. They moved quickly; we're super nice, and happy. Can't beat that. The ambiance was cool also. It wasn't too busy or too crowded. They had a cool coffee shop vibe. What i didn't know is that 1 cookie was $5! I was absolutely shocked by the price. Very much a whoa moment for me. I ordered the original chocolate chunk cookie. It was a thick cookie, but was it worth $5. I don't think so lol. With inflation and everything else happening, $5 shouldn't seem so steep, but i still feel like wow! Lol. The cookie was warm, and i broke it up so that i didn't completely break my diet. I ate it over a course of 3 days. The first day it was very chewy. Almost had that soft baked underdone flavor. Which i didn't hate. It definitely requires some milk if you ask me... but, the days after, it became a little firmer. Which i also didn't mind. The chocolate was good and rich, but for some reason, it didn't move me. I wasn't completely blown away by it, which is what i was expecting. Overall, i feel like this bakery is hyped. It was just okay. But, i can say i tried it and didn't love it. It was just a like for me. Give it a try for yourself and let me know what y'all think.. no pics this time.

Lalita S.

Yelp
After seeing so much hype around levain cookies I was so disappointed. The chocolate chip cookie was hard and cold. I'm personally not a fan of crunchy cookies and like a more chewy cookie. It was not my cup of tea but maybe others will like it better. The service was great and it was pretty clean in there.
google avatar

Hadiya M.

Yelp
Huge Levain fan! I have been to the Bleecker St and 74th/UWS locations prior to this. We pulled up late Sunday night around 9:30 pm (they close at 10) and were greeted very politely. The cookies were fresh (and still warm!! ) we ordered Two chip and the special Coconut caramel. Realized we needed milk so ordered some to go and were graciously given a large milk that was also very fresh. Headed back home and dug in to what have been the most consistently delicious cookies I have had since I first tried them earlier this year.
google avatar

Lisa Z.

Yelp
This location is definitely on the bigger end and still had a nice cozy feeling. The staff were super nice and helpful. I do agree that this location might bake the cookies slightly longer than the Manhattan locations but it still tasted good to me.
google avatar

Simon W.

Yelp
Levain's been my favorite cookie since the first bite from their original shop off Broadway many moons ago. Since they've started to branch out, all the new locations look like carbon copies, and look visually welcoming and appealing. There is also more room to line up inside the shop instead of out the door like the original. Now I've had plenty of cookies over the years, from many in New York City that claim they are the best, but for my money, there is no other, Levain is still #1. In fact, just about the only competition for Levain, is other Levain locations. I still feel the original location makes the best cookies, they just look more well crisper with well defined edges, maybe a little heftier as well, even though that probably isn't true. When I can't to OG however, Williamsburg will have to suffice, or try to anyway.
google avatar

Katey G.

Yelp
I love Levain. Ever since I had their cookie almost a decade ago I fell in love. For me, the chocolate walnut is the best cookie on earth (although, I might go as far as to say their raisin scone is even better). I preordered individually wrapped cookies for my wedding (very easy to do for events!) I'm able to order delivery from this location to my apartment, which always makes convenient gifts and treats, A true New York classic!
google avatar

Jody W.

Yelp
These cookies are the bomb. They're HUGE! I received a lovely gift box recently of beautifully packaged, giant chocolate chip cookies. These have walnuts in them - which I don't usually care for - but they are a perfect ratio for these excessively decadent cookies. Prepare yourself-these are really rich. I can only do a half at a time. I've been keeping them frozen and they heat up perfectly for a few minutes in the toaster oven.
google avatar

Melissa A.

Yelp
If you have a sweet tooth, Levain is worth the hype. I've never experienced such a gooey cookie before and the wait wasn't bad whatsoever-- I visited the location on the Upper East Side. In my experience, the one in Williamsburg isn't usually too crowded either. The gluten free chocolate chip walnut cookie was a delight, as was the chocolate peanut butter cookie.

Madeleine L.

Yelp
Best cookie I've ever had! Cookie is crunchy on the outside and soft and gooey inside, and not overwhelmingly sweet. There was quite a line but it moves quick, and I felt that the wait was definitely worth the cookie. I got the original chocolate chip and walnut- a 10/10!
google avatar

Usha P.

Yelp
Their chocolate chip cookies are intricately crafted but it would taste a lot better if they warmed it up, it tastes better when you warm it up at home. You can't eat too much though, it's one of those things that after a few bites you get nauseous.Their oatmeal cookie is good too but I prefer soft and chewy oatmeal cookies. Also the hot chocolate was the worst, it was so bitter the sugar packets couldn't even save it. Finally it is a nice clean space with some chairs and tables but there is room for more.
google avatar

Matthew L.

Yelp
What do you get the "Cookie Monster" when she's fighting in NYC? Levain Bakery of course! They truly lived up to their reputation. We tried a few different cookies and loved them all. What else can I say?! Go get some!
google avatar

Ethel P.

Yelp
Chocolate chip walnut cookie and oatmeal raisin cookie heaven! Levain never disappoints whether you eat at the bakery itself or have it delivered. Yes it's a bit pricey but totally worth it! Update 2/28/22 - bought the ciabatta bread yesterday afternoon. We were very disappointed when we cut the bread in half and there was raw flour in between the cooked bread. I guess we will stick with the cookies.
google avatar

Ryn E.

Yelp
Tasty. Friendly service. Lots of options. Awesome spot! Great dessert and love bringing guests here
google avatar

XTina Q.

Yelp
Ugh... I like levain for there cookies and breads . I went in yesterday and decided to try something new..... big mistake. I had the brioche with chocolate chips . It was the driest thing I've ever eaten. Nothing about it resembles brioche. It tasted like a day old bread roll with chocolate chips . It was so heavy and hard . Such a shame . I really was hoping it was good . Very disappointed.
google avatar

Naomi T.

Yelp
I tried their vegan cookie after seeing it on Instagram. The cookies at Levain resemble drop biscuits. They're round a bit misshapen. The cookie itself is crisp without being hard. The chocolate chips were gooey and the walnuts were crunchy. I wish they offered more options, but I think they might give my favorite cookie from Confectionery (the chocolate chip walnut cookie) a run for its money.
google avatar

Quin X.

Yelp
Really good gluten free options! I will deff go again. The place has many seats and good ambiance too if you wanna study or read there too
google avatar

Ashlee S.

Yelp
Scrumptiously delicious! I have been a fan of Levain for about six years and it's never let me down. I love the chocolate chip and chocolate chip w/ walnut cookies. Can't decide which is my favorite! Now that I'm gluten free, I'll have to try the GF options soon!
google avatar

Nga C.

Yelp
My friend and I was in the neighborhood and we both were craving sweets and so we decided to grab a cookie each to meet our needs. Once inside, the person that greeted us was very friendly and welcoming. We asked a lot of questions and she was great. Told us which one just came out of the oven in case we wanted them cookies hot and which one is the least sweet. In the end we both choose the chocolate with walnuts and shared an oatmeal cookie as well. Taste wise, the chocolate/walnuts was certainly warm and gooey. Though it was way too sweet for my liking and I didn't feel like they put enough walnuts. As for the oatmeal, there were way too many raisins but I guess that can also fall under personal preferences. Overall, I like this shop and the people that works there. This cookie shop was brightly lit and you can see the kitchen in the back. In my mind...that's the best backdrop for any restaurant or eatery can have. Cookie wise it's $5 a pop (yikes) though I can tell they used great quality ingredients so that's justifiable the price and since it's so indulgent, it will only be consider a treat whenever I need to satisfy my diabolic sweet desires. On a side note, the only thing I wish they would offer are seating areas inside their stores.
google avatar

Rob W.

Yelp
Every time we are remotely close to Levain it beckons like a siren call. The cookies are simply that good. We love the walnut chocolate chip and dark chocolate chocolate chip the best. They are huge and decadent. In a good way. The best way. Always a fun stop with the ever chipper staff. Highly recommended.
google avatar

Mikhala F.

Yelp
Ooh, this lived up to the hype. We had exceptional service from the staff here and waited for our fresh-made cookies on the patio outside. The cookies were warm and moist, and absolutely massive! Highly recommend the chocolate walnut or two-chip cookie - you can definitely share one between two people. Get a latte or cold milk to accompany your cookie - trust me, it's worth it! Reasonably priced and so, so good. A NY staple!
google avatar

Amanda W.

Yelp
We were craving sweets while staying in Brooklyn and my wife's cousin recommended this place as the best cookies that we had to try. My wife was not impressed although I enjoyed the rocky road cookie! I regretted not getting an extra for the flight home!
google avatar

Waheda I.

Yelp
I had known about this bakery for a long time but I refuse to wait an hour in line. So I was happy to see they opened a location in Brooklyn. I told the cashier I knew about their store and excited about trying their cookies. He was so sweet in giving me recommendations. We got the chocolate cookie, the one with peanut butter and even got the banana bread free! Get it all warmed up and dig in. The cookies are great warmed up. Everything was so decadent and creamy. I definitely want to try all their cookies. They were busy. There was people in and out the entire time. Either picking up or taking orders to go. Understandably so, great cookies!
google avatar

Hsin-Yi W.

Yelp
Levain Bakery is one of our favorite spots for cookies in NYC and we were so excited to know they opened up a location in Williamsburg which is the closest one to us. We got all 4 flavors of cookies as we always do and they were still delicious, soft inside with crunchy layer. We also got their Coffee Pound Cake, which was puffy with great coffee smell. The staff was friendly, attentive and served everything quickly. It was a great experience and we will definitely continue to visit again.
google avatar

Estee A.

Yelp
Levain is a religious experience. The staff here are super friendly and efficient. The cookies are delicious, gooey and rich, not for the faint of heart. I usually split a cookie with my girlfriend. They eat well the next day and are such a great treat. It's a massive chocolate chip cookie with walnuts, what could be bad? I also love their double chocolate chocolate chip cookie.
google avatar

Ahmed M.

Yelp
I've been wanted to come here for whole but did not want to make the journey to uptown Manhattan. I happened to see this place while walking around Williamsburg so thought it was my chance to try their cookies. The cookies are very good and really thick. Though they're five dollars each you're getting a huge cookie. You can definitely split one with a friend. It's good but really sweet. You'll be on a sugar high by the time you finish one. There are a decent amount of seats inside to chill and enough space to. I got a latte as well and it was good. I'd come back.
google avatar

Caroline D.

Yelp
Undeniably great cookies, however, this location does tend to over bake them a bit. The chocolate walnut cookie is fantastic, and I also love their seasonal apple cinnamon muffin.
google avatar

Sydney G.

Yelp
I mean yeah, their cookies are undeniably delicious. The chocolate peanut butter is a 10 typically. However, the one I got from this location was a little over-baked. Their cookies are iconic for the crispy outside and gooey inside, but this one didn't live up to that. The fall cookie was also a letdown. I love a good fall flavored dessert, give me all the pumpkin. But there was something off about this. Would not order again. Giving it 3 stars because their other flavors are almost always a hit. The two chip cookie is insane. Next time I'll stick to that one. Like I said, they are delicious, there's no denying that. But there's places in the city that make a better cookie (hot take, I know).
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
These cookies are still as great as always. Tried their new rocky road flavour too, walnut chocolate is still my favourite. $5 a cookie, tax included.
google avatar

S O.

Yelp
I stopped by this place yesterday and bought two cookies and one loaf of bread for souvenir for my family. Cookies were tasty and I thought I could come back for more in the future. My family were very excited to try their bread this morning and what a huge disappointment...the bread was underbaked. Most parts were doughy and not edible. I was shocked by this. Who would expect this from high end bakery. When I am around the area I might stop by for some cookies and tea but no more bread.
