Lexie's Frozen Custard - Review - Berkeley - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Blink twice and you’ll miss Lexie’s Frozen Custard in Downtown Berkeley. The inside is tiny, with barely room for three bodies at once, but if you’re willing to let go of personal space, you’ll find this creamy and rich custard mind-bending. There are typically four flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and two flavors of the day (one custard and one vegan sherbet). While you could just order single or double scoops, any one of the nine overflowing sundaes, like the decadent peanut butter oreo with chocolate custard, peanut butter sauce, and oreo crumble, are the way to go. We recommend getting the sundae concrete—they’ll blend in all the toppings like chocolate cake chunks and biscoff cookies." - Ricky Rodriguez

Google
Lexie's is THE BEST! Her frozen custard is so velvety and creamy, it's a whole other level up from ice cream or soft-serve. She uses really high-quality ingredients and a Straus base, and you can taste the difference! The flavor of the day is always wonderful, as are the sundaes, but don't overlook the ice cream sandwiches and ice-cream pies in the cold case! Her pies are the ONLY way my family celebrates our birthdays and special occasions.

Google
Loved stopping by Lexie’s! Their flavour of the day was made with fresh strawberries from the farmers market. Several vegan options to choose from made from real fruit.

Great little spot. Tucked away in the “theater district” of Berkeley small shop but huge impact line out of the door when we went, but it went fast, delicious dessert, and friendly staff.

Google
Since it’s a special day, figured I’d dessert it up. Found Lexie’s, packed on a Friday night, clearly I don’t get out enough. Lexie was behind the counter, we had a quick back and forth…she’s 2 months younger and even offered a candle. I declined, but we both had a shared twinkle in the eye. Got the sorbet with a selection of toppings suggested by her. Check this spot out.

A MUST GO IN BERKELEY. This is my favorite ice cream (frozen custard) place in the entire Bay Area. The frozen custard is so smooth and creamy and flavorful, and all of the house made toppings are fire! The cobbler a la mode they do on the weekends is so good. I once bought it and ate it outside and then immediately went back in for another. My other favorites are the banana caramel sundae and the very berry sundae. The pies are excellent too - I have tried the pumpkin ginger snap (Thanksgiving special?) and the key lime, both were amazing!

Google
The Banana sundae and cookie monster concrete were delicious! This was my first time trying custard (not very common in California) and I was a fan! The smell of toffee as you enter the store is divine. Lexie was extremely friendly and answered all our questions! We're excited for them to become a local favorite!

Google
The frozen custard was dense and creamy. It paired perfectly with the tart lemon sauce and fresh raspberries. The generous swirl of whipped cream complemented the custard well. Service was prompt and courteous.

Google
I love this place! Their frozen custard is so good and I love the fresh ingredients on their sundaes. I’ve eaten at their food truck numerous times and I can’t wait for their store to open. Edit: omg this place is the best! Their flavors rotate, and don’t sleep on the dark chocolate sorbet! It’s deadly chocolate heaven

Yelp
Friendly, upbeat, Lexie's always smiling. Delicious frozen custard. Love to bring soemthing from Lexie's to a friend's. Its always a great contribution to a dinner party. i love serving it to my own guests. Makes dinner a special occasion. Lots of unique flavors which change every two days. Delicious after theater - the Freight or Berkeley Rep or the Aurora. Treat yourself!

Yelp
Needed a sweet treat and came across this super cute and yummy place! Small and sweet!!! The Banana Lexie was AMAZING! Can't wait to come back and try the pie slice

Yelp
Lexie's has frozen custard that is very rich. It's basically like eating solid cream. It's not like ice cream. I had frozen custard a couple of times and this is a nice velvety version of it. We had the special of the day which was pistachio but I didn't really taste the pistachio. It's kind of a subtle flavor that was slightly unpleasant for me because it did not taste like pistachio. I think vanilla or chocolate will be the safer option here. They had a peach pie crumble with vanilla custard for $7. That looked very good. Sharing a double script was easy and only $7. Service was very friendly and courteous. Will definitely come back if I want more frozen custard.

Yelp
was next door for a show and wanted a sweet treat. really loved this mini sundae. It was the perfect amount of soft serve and wasn't too overwhelming. They have all their flavors and menu posted inside, so we were able to take our time to decide what we wanted to order.

Yelp
Sometimes you need some sweet indulgence before a theater matinee. Jamie W and I were a bit early for a performance at Berkeley Rep. Now I suppose we could've used the time to exercise like dropping down and doing fifty push-ups. But that seemed unlikely since I can barely do one. Or we could come here and see what frozen custard will contribute to our lives. Gee, tough decision. They serve the frozen custard in various delectable forms. Either by scoop in various flavors, or in sundaes with complimentary ingredients, or under the catch-all category of specialties like affogato, pie slices, and root beer floats. We decided to share the $9 Regular Peanut Butter Oreo Sundae with a base of creamy chocolate frozen custard topped with a thick, ropey peanut butter sauce, whipped cream, Oreo crumbles, and a pair of black cherries (Photo 9). Quite the yum and not overly sweet. Good decision. FOOD - 5 stars...tasty frozen custard that doesn't overwhelm your sweet tooth AMBIANCE - 4 stars...compact spot with seating outside SERVICE - 4.5 stars...very friendly and helpful TOTAL - 5 stars...a shareable treat quite unlike froyo shops RELATED - Exploring Berkeley? Yelp
Been there 3 x's and it just gets better. Great ice cream, amazing staff and clean and cute spot. I'll continue to come back.

Yelp
I'm officially obsessed! This custard shop is a hidden gem. You can taste the difference--everything is made with super fresh ingredients, and it shows in every bite. The custard is incredibly smooth and rich without being too heavy. The absolute best custard I've ever had!

Yelp
Located at 2010 Addison St, to the right of Freight & Salvage Coffeehouse, a small custard shop lives - Lexie's. It specializes in a small menu of classic flavors - chocolate and vanilla along with the flavor of the day - thin mint (on our visit) and a seasonal vegan sorbet - guava. There are seasonal sundae options available, which I partook in. All options are fresh, organic and house made. The flavors can be enjoyed simply in a cup or cone as a scoop or as a specialty item ranging from a concentrate, to sundae option, affogato or shake to a kids classic - dirt & worm sundae, which my daughter enjoyed. Don't forget to ask your little one if they would like a cup or cone. Cones cost and many parents were circling back to pay the difference since their kid saw a kid with a cone - this means another wait in line to do so. For the Kids Dirt & Worm Sundae, my little one picked Thin Mint as her custard flavor, which was layered with crushed/ground cookies and organic gummy worms. For $4.50 it's a yummy indulgence to create memories with. For the Concrete ($9), I opted for the Brownie Sundae which is chocolate custard, house made brownie chunks and chocolate fudge sauce all blended together and topped with whip cream (optional). The flavor was well balanced and the brownie bits were so plentiful I left a few behind to discard. I really enjoyed! The flavors were not too sweet, delectable and tasted of fresh, quality ingredients. Inside, near the register, are options of toffee popcorn, cookies, fruit chews and caramel. There is a mini freezer housing pre packed pints and cookie ice cream sandwiches. The interior was well maintained and clean, it is also very quaint and intimate. It is hard to distinguish between who is waiting on an order and who hasn't ordered - be kind and ask. Service can be slow due to one cashier and one preparer/server, based on the size of the shop it is understandable and the wait was well worth it - not horribly long with 3 families ahead of us. Following a Freight & Salvage performance (directly next door), Lexie's can get packed quickly. The staff was very friendly with smiles and patience, thank yous and assistance with add on options to assist with orders. Apple Pay, cash and cards are accepted. The shop is accessible by BART from the Downtown Berkeley stop, by car with street and garage parking options or by foot if you are close by. Lexie's opens at 1PM Tue-Sat, closed Mondays, and closes between 9-11PM depending on the day. *For those with little ones or little bladders* ...there are public restrooms - traditional gender specific - to the left of the shop, open to the public (no key or code needed). The women's restroom was well maintained and clean but lacked toilet seat covers and some stalls have no toilet paper.

Yelp
Great frozen custard and the sundae menu is fantastic . I loved the very berry - super fresh with fruit sauce and fresh strawberries. Customer service was friendly and sweet - street parking was easy on a Saturday. Great experience overall!

Yelp
Cute mini sundaes are perfect after a show at the Berkeley Rep (and/or Freight & Salvage)! One can get simple, one-flavor cup of frozen custard or make other creations like sundaes. My friend and I got the Speculoos & Peanut butter and Oreo sundae (mini size) each. I thought it was the perfect serving! P.S. they serve real cherries so don't refuse your cherry on top if you thought it was Maraschino like me.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're a fan of chocolate desserts, you must go to Lexie's Frozen Custard! My friend and I had to fulfill our chocolate cravings and ordered the regular brownie sundae. The brownies had a rich chocolate flavor, and it paired well with the creamy frozen custard. Portion was also generous-- regular size is definitely enough for two people to share. Overall a great shop to stop by for a solid sundae!

Yelp
2010 Addison St Berkeley, CA 94701 This was my first time at Lexie's Frozen Custard shop in downtown Berkeley. It was around 9pm on a Tuesday, and I was flipping thru the Yelp app looking for a frozen dessert place that was still open. Wow, Lexie's is open until 10pm! This is a small shop with a neat storefront. It's right next to the Center St parking garage. I was immediately greeted as I walked in. I told them it was my first time there, and they offered me samples if I wanted to try a flavor. They offer scoops, sundaes, shakes, pies, cookies, and pre-packaged goods. Oh well, I played it safe and ordered two scoops of chocolate & vanilla for $7. I should of tried the strawberry and fruity sorbet. They told me all the custards are made onsite in fresh batches. How was it? It's like a creamy soft serve, but not as sweet. It has a somewhat unique silky texture. It's not icy cold like frozen yogurt. If you want a quality frozen dessert, with great customer service, try Lexie's Frozen Custard. BTW, this shop has only been here for about a year. So all the 1-3 star reviews from years ago, don't apply to this place. This is pretty much a grab and go place. There's a few tables outside. Support Local Business!

Yelp
Delish. Never had this type of ice cream. Still taste like ice cream but also custard. Go figure. Haha. Tasty.

Yelp
For frozen custard afficionados, this is top-rate. A college friend lived in St. Louis for a few years where she introduced me to the wonders of frozen custard and the many variations(sundaes, concrete etc.). Ever since, I have been hooked. I discovered Lexie's during intermission at a Freight show. I had lemon custard sundae special which also had their delicious berry sauce, whipped cream and good quality luxardo cherry on top. OMG. Another time I had their brownie sundae. Last night we stopped by and my husband ordered the vegan sorbet and added the berry sauce, coconut whipped creem, the cherry on top. The sorbet was a many berry concoction, but the special part was that there was lemon added which made it really special. I tried the chocolate chip ice cream sandwich which as good for a smaller dessert option. Every time I'm in Berkeley I have to find an excuse to visit Lexie's!

Yelp
Headed to this place for a sweet treat after dinner. Delightfully surprised by how much flavor these mini scoops came with. I got the hazelnut custard and my bf got the vanilla with bacon bits maple syrup and waffle cones. I personally liked mine on its own, it came with the nuts and ribbons of Nutella! His was also tasty, a little sweeter for my taste but we were surprised by how tasty the bacon and waffle cone toppings were! Staff was super nice and offered us samples. The shop itself is tiny. You mainly go in and order then take your dessert to eat outside. I only wish the custard wouldn't melt so fast. Yet overall, it's a cute spot to stop for after a show or dinner nearby!

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place, but I was disappointed in the frozen custard. It felt and tasted like regular ice cream, or maybe lower fat ice cream. I had not tried frozen custard before, so I was excited because I love dense, smooth ice cream and I love eggy custards. I tried the vanilla in order to get the pure taste and mouth-feel of the custard. It was not any smoother than ordinary ice cream and the flavor was bland -- no custard flavor and not a lot of vanilla. It definitely seemed lower fat than premium ice creams. Maybe that's intentional but it does not help the creamy texture. The price of $5 seemed like a lot for a small scoop, but I found out later from their website that it's organic, so that seems more reasonable. It's WONDERFUL that they use organic milk and cream, plus compostable bowls, and it's right next to The Freight & Salvage, so I might go again and get toppings on it. I will just go expecting regular old ice cream, which is always fun. Just not special. P.S. The Freight lets you bring food in to the theater, so you can enjoy it during the concert.

Yelp
Little ice cream shop in downtown Berkeley that serves soft serve, sundaes, and other cold desserts. We got the speculoos and banana caramel sundaes, and a scoop of the Vietnamese Coffee. Ice cream was delicious and I could tell they make it fresh. The Viet Coffee had a good kick to it, as it should. Servers are nice and welcoming. Parking can be tricky as it is in downtown but there should be a parking garage close by. Or you'll have to park on the street. Overall, would come back here - it seems like they change up their flavors a bit so would like to try other seasonal flavors!

Yelp
Great tasting custard. Texture, no ice in the custard, multiple flavor options and a great combination of toppings was my experience. The shop is clean and served by two interesting personalities. Very pleasant experience. It's now my favorite place to go in Berkeley.

Yelp
Amazing product, amazing service. Generous and kind business owner. The energy of the business will bring joy to your day and trying times. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing hidden gem that I can't wait to go back to. Not sure why it took me so long to check this place out but I'm so glad I did. The vanilla is perfection. Smooth and not too sweet. The daily flavor was banana pudding and it was just enough banana to not feel like you're drowning in it. The homemade waffle cone was just the right thickness and crunch. Yum!!
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
Who am I kidding? I love this place. I go all the time -- more than I should -- and the sundaes are great. Give it a try!

Carlos M.

Yelp
Love love love their concretes/custards! I just found out this place last week and I'm already obsessed. So delicious without being overly sweet and the texture is perfect. Service is very good.

Antonette L.

Yelp
Wonderful, unusual flavors. Rich and creamy! Also able to test the flavors. The owner was there and let me mix 2 flavors to balance the sweet and tart.
google avatar

Aby B.

Yelp
Felt like I got store brand ice cream, syrup and a week old brownie. Then put them together and sold it for $10. Below average! Please start with some good cutlery and fresh ingredients

Yelp
Good friendly customer service and great frozen custard. Love the owners and her staffs such awesome individuals

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! There's tons of flavors for frozen custards and rotations for sundae flavors. I've tried multiple sundaes so far but my favorite is the key lime pie sundae. I love all the handmade curds she uses in the fruit sundaes. They also sell pints. They're a little pricey at $11 but so good. I love the lemon blueberry yogurt and grab that in a pint when it's available . Lexie has been there every time I've come here and she is an absolutely gem! So friendly and you can tell, she takes a lot of pride in her business. It's a cute little shop right off Shattuck on Addison. Parking is a little tricky down in this area, so I usually double park right out front and run inside and am in and out quickly. Definitely one of my go to spots! Thanks, Lexie!
google avatar

Ashley S.

Yelp
the menu here is super simple, but the limited options is nice for anyone indecisive! there is no seating, only a window to order on the outside. banana sundae - i love the caramel sauce a lot, because it tastes so homemade. i thought it'd be overly sweet, but it was perfect! it's also a great portion for the price. this place is never too busy, but it's pretty good!! so underrated
google avatar

Bruce K.

Yelp
How much do I love Lexie's? As much as a man can like a frozen custard place! Sure you can go to Wisconsin and find frozen custard in every other town. But here in Bay Area, Lexie's is the only place I know that serves the authentic stuff, with a rich creamy texture and good deep flavor. And one in a while you'll find a pretty great sorbet like the cherry pomegranate sorbet my wife ordered tonight. And there are often fresh baked goods like chocolate chip cookies or brownies or good stuff like that. Lexie herself is almost always there and they stay open to 11 to get the Freight and Salvage and Berkeley Rep patrons on their way home. So make the stop, you won't regret it.
google avatar

Nermeen R.

Yelp
First time here and obsessed! We were able to sample the custards prior to purchase. The very berry was creamy and balanced. We also tried the almond toffee sundae which was also really great! There was a small table outside but no other seating so it's more of a grab and go establishment. Will definitely be returning to try more flavors or go back for the same ones!

Rose A.

Yelp
Just tasted like ice cream that they whipped. I was expecting something a little for custardy flavor.
google avatar

David T.

Yelp
We've been looking for a local frozen custard shop and now we found one. Our son Jeff recommended Lexie's and she was so friendly and her custard is yummy! We ordered one of her key lime pies for Christmas! We will be visiting often!
google avatar

Bre'a C.

Yelp
So... Hubby and I went to a closed Broadway play that is currently not on Broadway in NYC, but playing right here at Peet's Theatre in Berkeley across the street from Lexie's. After the 8PM week night play, of course, we wanted a sweet treat before going home, and they were STILL opened -and there was a crowd. I ordered the chocolate-vanilla banana caramel custard AND a package of 6 deliciously crispy walnut sandwich cookies -for us to share- and we were in heaven. As cold as it was outside last night, we sat outside at a little table for two, shivering and happily ate everything! Lexie's is a wonderful little shop with sweet treats and great Staff!!! Everyone was so nice and truly appreciated our business!!! Thank YOU so MUCH!
google avatar

Dar V.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic frozen custard. Lexie creates delicious unique flavors, a new one every couple of days, along with a special flavor sorbet for the dairy free folk and good old vanilla and chocolate for those who love the basics.
google avatar

marilyn h.

Yelp
I have been back 2 times and it hasn't even been two weeks since first came on a Wednesday for an Olli class at F & S. Alexa's custard is unequaled! I am not a desert person but a cone and scoop are stellar and worth driving across town for. She makes the delicious mandatory cones from her own recipe. The flavors change. All are wonderful!
google avatar

Connie H.

Yelp
This is my favorite custard place in all of the Bay Area. I'm serious. It's so delicious, they make all custard and almost all toppings (like brownies!) in house. And prices are so affordable. The owner and staff are always so friendly. And love that everything is compostable. Even cups and spoons. I noticed their pay screen doesn't even have a tip option. I really hope they're around for a long time and make enough margin to thrive.

Michelle C.

Yelp
Every single place I've gone cannot get the s'mores taste and texture ratio correct. That all ended with Lexie's. 1000% get the s'mores mini sundae. You will not regret this decision. I love Matt and Lexie.

Sonya L.

Yelp
Cannot recommend this place enough! Visited today for the first time and the customer service was amazing, tons of selection for sundaes/toppings and everything was very reasonably priced. On top of that the quality of ingredients is incredible and I love that they use natural maraschino cherries that don't taste like chemicals, as well as organic gummy worms and other toppings. Definitely going to come back and support so they don't close like so many other Berkeley small businesses! My favorite was the key lime custard pie slice which was only $5 and to die for.
google avatar

B P.

Yelp
Love this spot! The vanilla custard is so good and I really enjoy the flavor combinations. The staff is also fantastic! Always helpful, warm and friendly.
google avatar

Bee S.

Yelp
So happy to see Lexie's new storefront! Love the shop and its location - next to a downtown parking lot for easy access! Homemade chocolate chip cookies and apple cider caramels too. In addition to the vanilla and chocolate, flavors are creative - like fig, pumpkin, waffle cone caramel! At this visit, had the banana sundae (loved the natural cherry on top!) and another in our party had the apple crisp special. So delicious! The chocolate cherry pie in the freezer caught my eye too. Service was excellent. Plan to return.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is such a sweet gem, located right next to the parking garage in the downtown arts district! We get our small (perfectly crafted frozen custard-the REAL DEAL) sundaes before we head to the Freight & Salvage for a concert or to the Berkeley Rep for a play. It is high-end ingredients perfectly served by lovely employees and well worth the price for perfection!

A D.

Yelp
This place is fantastic! The custard is super delicious and so are all the toppings. I had vanilla with chocolate sauce and pecans. Their chocolate sauce is homemade and they toast their nuts! And they're very friendly and give out samples! Highly recommend going here to check them out!

Christopher W.

Yelp
Lexie's Frozen Custard is an outstanding downtown Berkeley establishment serving superb confections and run by a warm and exuberant owner, Ms. Alexis. Her staff is exceptional as well, doubling the pleasure of every visit.
google avatar

Lara S.

Yelp
We came in for the bananas Lexie sundae and were amazed at how delicious it was! First, the chocolate custard was so good, but the vanilla wascincredible! The homemade chocolate sauce was fantastic and really great counterpoint to the vanilla. The bananas and toffe pieces , as well as the high end cherry, were just so amazing. I'm running out of adjectives to describe how delicious this sundae was...suffice to say it's a cold day and still this ice cream sundae was super wonderful. Also, Lexie herself was super nice, friendly, and a genuinely sincere person IMO. I recommend everyone try this place if you are in the area. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Hilda L.

Yelp
Stopped by for a little treat before heading to lunch with my parents and we were all blown away. I ordered the lemon raspberry custard in order to avoid dairy and could not believe how creamy and delicious this vegan delight was! My picky as heck dad ordered the (also vegan) dark chocolate custard and immediately made his approval clear. Mom went with the classic vanilla and was too into the dessert to even chat with the rest of us as we walked to the car Definitely want to go back to grab some of their pints to go!

A F.

Yelp
i really like the custard, a little smoother than ice cream. good sundae, good flavors i like this place

Lima C.

Yelp
Amazing amazing amazing. The owner was very kind and gave us a sample of the berry sauce leading me to get a double scoop of the Very Berry. It was topped with whipped cream and an organic maraschino cherry. The fruit toppings were incredibly fresh and the sauce was excellent. Also tried the key lime pie (absolute banger) and the chocolate malt shake (also deluxe) Can't wait to go back
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
We got the peanut butter oreo sundae and the pineapple sorbet with lemon sauce and they were both really good!
google avatar

Keith L.

Yelp
Their frozen custard is creamier and smoother than ice cream. They have a variety of sundaes and other options featuring their custard. The almond fudge custard sundae was wonderful, full of cookies and fudge. Nice staff too. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Lexi's custard is AHHH mazing. Everything is hand made, from the cookies to the custard to the pies. Lexi pays special attention to the presentation, which most of us wouldn't notice, but I appreciate her dedication and love of her product. Deliveries from Lexi got us through the pandemic feeling connected to our neighbors and her, and we are THRILLED she's got a storefront now, GO get you some!
