6 Best Day Trips from Paris

"There's no mistaking you're in a converted, historic building: long before the Flemish gabled structure was Lille's first five-star hotel, it was a 15th century hospice. There's a massive stained glass window on the façade, an old hospice room still intact, and a 17th-century chapel. All of this sits alongside modern art, vast courtyards, a glass canopy, and a modern restaurant. Rooms are a mix of modern and a bit old fashioned: exposed wood beams, wood panels lining the walls around the bed, great light. There's fine dining in the red vaulted-ceiling restaurant, and it's considered some of the city's finest." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

"How did it strike you on arrival? There's no mistaking you're in a converted, historic building: long before the Flemish gabled structure was Lille's first five-star hotel, it was a 15th century hospice. There's a massive stained glass window on the façade, an old hospice room, still intact, and a 17th century chapel. All of this sits alongside modern art, vast courtyards, a glass canopy, and a modern restaurant. The good stuff: Tell us about your room.Rooms are a mix of modern and a bit old fashioned: exposed wood beams, wood panels lining the walls around the bed, some with tiled floors. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. There's fine dining in the red vaulted-ceiling restaurant, and it's considered some of the city's finest. Also, there's a small spa with pool and sauna. What was most memorable about your stay? It's set away about 10 minutes by foot from La Grande Place in the city's center, but is a Lille institution with tremendous history. Bottom line: worth it, and why?For travelers who want to accrue hotel points when traveling, this is a smart property to book. It's part of Marriott's Autograph collection, so guests can expect Marriott comforts and services—yet with local style imbued with rich history." - Lindsey Tramuta

"It’s hard to imagine how a hotelier with a historical bent could do better in terms of raw material than the gorgeous 15th-century hospice building in old Flemish-style Lille that now houses L’Hermitage Gantois. And while it’s managed by a company under the Marriott umbrella, you should know that the Autograph Collection is a world apart from the brand’s ordinary business hotels. Not content with just a lovingly restored exterior, it opts for a heady mix of eras and styles in its interiors as well, spanning the range in the bedrooms from Louis XV oak panels to transparent Lucite chairs by Philippe Starck." - Tablet Hotels

I had an incredible stay at the hotel after a couple of years. The service and staff were exceptional. I want to express my gratitude to Angelique for arranging my dream room. As a titanium member, I felt truly pampered. The spa pool is a marvel, and the gardens are beautiful. The serene atmosphere, nestled near a bustling city, creates a peaceful ambiance. The restaurant serves fresh and delectable food in a charming setting. The entire team deserves credit for making my stay flawless.

This is supposed to be a 5 star hotel but didnt feel like one. Our suite was spacious and the bed was comfortable however the room was tired and dated. The Wifi quality was really poor with a weak signal. Also a number of the plug sockets in the room just didnt work. |Check in was unwelcoming. We arrived just after 2pm to be told check in was at 3pm and therefore our room was not ready. We asked what time the room would be ready and were told it was unlikely to be ready at 3pm. We needed the room for 3pm as we had a conference call booked for then and were told it was now possible to let u have it but it hadnt been checked. There were dirty cups and water bottles still in the room which were not sorted until a couple of hours later. It felt the staff just didnt care. TO be fair check out was better service.|The location of the hotel is quite good between Eurostar and the center. |It wasnt bad enough to make a complaint but not good enough to return at anytime soon.

Beautiful hotel, super huge room with all the comforts. Lots of interesting history as parts are an old church but blended with modern. Valet parking and excellent staff. Everyone so polite and helpful. They can’t do enough for you.

We stayed at L'Hermitage Gantois during our trip to follow Tour de France. It's the most impressive hotel I've ever been to. As an Autograph Collection hotel, L'Hermitage Gantois has its own unique charms that appeal to visitors who appreciate historical sites. Originally founded in 1462, it served as a hospice until 1995. Subsequently, it underwent restoration and renovation, emerging as a 5-star hotel in 2003. There’s a chapel still on the grounds of the property, adding significant character to the hotel, which I believe will be exceptionally well-suited for wedding events. Our room is on the ground floor, next to the chapel, which also granted us the privilege of accessing both courtyards within a minute. We stayed there for a few days and had dinner at their bar and restaurant twice because the cuisine was exceptionally great. 👍👍

This hotel is great but still I wonder why some hotels got 5 stars when some stuff are at that level: - Shower has not a good pressure its terrible - The pool is not that great. I mean, it is surrounded by mirrors that are all not clean and the noise in there is crazy. This can’t be 5 stars - In a 5 stars hotel I expect the beds to be absolutely perfect which is not. They are more on “the used side” then on the “new”side” All in all don’t get me wrong, its a good hotel. But I am just wondering how much we have to pay to get a real 5 stars.

A truly unique stay experience From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed by the incredibly friendly staff, who personally accompanied us to our room and gave us a brief tour of the property. The hotel has a fascinating history—it was originally founded as a hospice in 1462 and was renovated into a hotel about 20 years ago. Within the building, there’s a beautiful chapel and an elegant hall, perfect for family or company events. Our room was decorated in a classic style, featuring wooden frames, tasteful paintings, and plenty of space. It truly felt like stepping into a different era. The facility is a bit old though, given it’s renovated 20 years ago. A bit drawback is the hotel doesn’t have its own parking lot, so need to park nearby alongside the road, luckily it’s Easter holiday so totally free. Overall we had a very pleasant stay here, hope this hidden gem can be discovered by more travelers!

Nice rooms. Ours needs a new shower head and I was not impressed with the condition of our kettle. Other than that, it was a perfectly lovely place to stay. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and, would definitely return.

The building is beautiful and iconic full of history and lore. Staff are very nice. Though this hotel is very much lacking the details usually associated with a 5 star experience and hotel. We came for a romantic minimoon experience for 3 nights. Sadly there are several details that fell short for us on expectations. - Key cards repeatedly kept wiping each day and needing to go back to reception to get a new key card. On one occasion had to wait 10 mins for reception staff as there was no one on post. - Towels were not replaced when room service cleaned the room. - found it odd when the room service cleaned the room to stuff all the fancy pillows behind the TV and not lay them on the bed. - Plug points broken - Tile fell off in the bath while using due to a poorly fastened towel rack. (Screws screwed into the grouting rather than the tile itself causing it to force the tile free) - Not enough seating or hooks to hang your robes when visiting the pool. Pool side is very small and limited to first few users. - TV in room was as old as the building, no modern apps, netflix ect. Back to watching a late night movie from the laptop. Not what you'd expect for a 5 Star. - for a building with such history and intrigue a tour on arrival would really add to the experience.
