6 Best Day Trips from Paris

"There's no mistaking you're in a converted, historic building: long before the Flemish gabled structure was Lille's first five-star hotel, it was a 15th century hospice. There's a massive stained glass window on the façade, an old hospice room still intact, and a 17th-century chapel. All of this sits alongside modern art, vast courtyards, a glass canopy, and a modern restaurant. Rooms are a mix of modern and a bit old fashioned: exposed wood beams, wood panels lining the walls around the bed, great light. There's fine dining in the red vaulted-ceiling restaurant, and it's considered some of the city's finest." - Lindsey Tramuta, Mary Winston Nicklin

"How did it strike you on arrival? There's no mistaking you're in a converted, historic building: long before the Flemish gabled structure was Lille's first five-star hotel, it was a 15th century hospice. Anything stand out about other services and features? Whether it’s childcare, gyms, spas, even parking—whatever stuck with you. There's fine dining in the red vaulted-ceiling restaurant, and it's considered some of the city's finest. Also, there's a small spa with pool and sauna. What was most memorable about your stay? It's set away about 10 minutes by foot from La Grande Place in the city's center, but is a Lille institution with tremendous history. Bottom line: worth it, and why?For travelers who want to accrue hotel points when traveling, this is a smart property to book. It's part of Marriott's Autograph collection, so guests can expect Marriott comforts and services—yet with local style imbued with rich history." - Lindsey Tramuta

"It’s hard to imagine how a hotelier with a historical bent could do better in terms of raw material than the gorgeous 15th-century hospice building in old Flemish-style Lille that now houses L’Hermitage Gantois. And while it’s managed by a company under the Marriott umbrella, you should know that the Autograph Collection is a world apart from the brand’s ordinary business hotels. Not content with just a lovingly restored exterior, it opts for a heady mix of eras and styles in its interiors as well, spanning the range in the bedrooms from Louis XV oak panels to transparent Lucite chairs by Philippe Starck." - Tablet Hotels

Mind blown at the amazing quality of this hotel. From the moment you are greeted with a red carpet entry through the check-in process and opening your door, you are greeted with unique style and comfort. I loved my one night stay here and highly recommend to stay here! The breakfast has been the best I’ve had in a European hotel which was complimented with a black tea (I’m American). This hotel was about a 15 minute walk from the Christmas market but could have been shorter if I wasn’t taking my time and soaking in the scenery. I do recommend that the hotel invest in TV’s where you can project your phone streaming through cromecast or screen mirroring.

We went for drinks during the day. The hotel staff is very friendly and the lounge area is spacious and light. The interior and the layout can use a refresh to be more in line with similarly priced hotels. Service was friendly, quick and efficient!

This is a beautiful historic property with centuries of history echoing throughout the buildings. We stayed here for two night back in May and were extremely happy to have used my Marriott points to stay here versus elsewhere. We ate dinner one night at the bar which was good however extremely expensive for the city so we went out our other night. The breakfast each morning was okay, the cold items were all delectable including the fresh croissants however the hot options were extremely limited and…not really hot. My only primary criticism is that the building is falling apart. It appears the team on property are doing everything they can to keep up with the maintenance of the historic building, however the back wing we stayed in had severely sloping floors which felt almost unsafe, though there’s monitoring signs throughout that people are watching for any changes. It appears the building is so historical it takes an act of parliament to make major repairs. I was worried the bed would be sloped too however the experts here had the posts cut down to make the bed level. It was a walk down a hill essentially to the other side of our room to walk up into the bathroom. Again, it’s historic and completely understandable but sadly does take away from the experience. Location is about a 15 minute walk from Lille Europa but there’s a nearby metro line as well. Public transport was plentiful throughout the city and we did it completely on foot/public transport from here.

I’d like to share breakfast experience in the hotel. We arrived 45 minutes before it finishes and most food was gone. The most important there was no eggs or sausages for my kids. The staff was running around but no eggs or sausages coming. In the end I can see my kids just eating bread, which was also almost gone the same as croissants. The eggs came in the end with some strange look, like a porridge. They brought extra bacon which no one ate in the first place but no sausages. I had to have and argument with so called manager and she said many times there’s no more sausages. She repeated many times there’s no more, I said I will have to complain and then she threw a plate of sausages on the table with an attitude. Also before leaving a cook named Claude came ouf of the kitchen and went after me that I can’t talk with a person like that. I like their attitude, lying there’s no food and then suddenly magically appearing. It’s all the little things that annoy you on holiday with the kids. So you can’t get decent food in the hotel you were hoping is good. Would say stay in the hotel but don’t bother with the breakfast.

I had an incredible stay at the hotel after a couple of years. The service and staff were exceptional. I want to express my gratitude to Angelique for arranging my dream room. As a titanium member, I felt truly pampered. The spa pool is a marvel, and the gardens are beautiful. The serene atmosphere, nestled near a bustling city, creates a peaceful ambiance. The restaurant serves fresh and delectable food in a charming setting. The entire team deserves credit for making my stay flawless.

Beautiful old building in a good and quiet location. The room was spacious and clean. Great breakfast. Nice pool (though not too big). Everything was up to a 5* level.

All I can say is WOW! The hotel is a few blocks from city center. The outside of the building is historic, the inside will blow you away. The bar area in particular is awesome. The receptionists were very helpful. I drove to the hotel and it was easy to get to the hotel and then they parked the car. I did not have to drive in the small streets of the city center. If you are in the area, definitely stay at this hotel. It is worth the experience.

I thought this hotel was good. Front desk is very friendly and helpful. If you have marriott status, they are very generous with their benefits. Room was clean, very "american". full temperature control. large fluffy towels, including wash cloths. Full set of toiletries. Good location, especially if arriving by train - 10-15 minute walk, depending on the station. Easy walk to the shopping area. but very quiet at night. Great sound proofing. I slept very well. really good pillows. There are shutters for the windows - not drapes - so you can make it VERY dark if you want to. Didn't use the spa. I would stay here again. If you get one of the suite style rooms, they are very well designed. The sitting area is between the bedroom and bathroom -so one person can get up, shut the bedroom door, shower, get dressed, and even leave the room without disturbing the other person. BRILLIANT.

Yelp
A quaint hotel with lots of external character. Unfortunately, the rooms don't match up. The beds were like cots; sunken in the middle with minimal support. The lighting was poor and our room was adjacent to a construction area where the crew started promptly at 7am. When we checked in staff were pleasant and helpful but there was no mention of the construction or accompanying noise. The food was okay but not great despite the reviews we read before opting to eat at the hotel.

Yelp
Very Nice hotel. Rooms are very different and ecclectic. I had 2 rooms booked for my family. One was average with wooden beams old styled chairs and a nice king bed. Bathroom was nice and room had a fridge. Room also was very hot. Other room was in the old hospice part and was a fantastic suite. That room had a massive bathroom, scale, fireplace, king bed, Old style chairs and a fancy cappucino coffee make and a ton of lotions, shampoos, razor and more. The other room had a basic coffee pot and a lower level of shampoos and lotions. Hotel has a nice bar with 10 euro wine and 20 euro mixed drinks. Breakfast area had a continental for about 12 euro and full for about 23. I recommend full with cheese, salmon, eggs, bacon, ham, sausage, beans, waffles, pancakes and lots of bread, cakes, muffins and selfserve fresh squeezed orange juice. You also get fruit and champagne included. 5 star breakfast. You must visit the chapel and library and museum of old hospice and banquet rooms. Stained glass windows and plenty of artwork. Has a spa and pool but didnt use. Convenient location.

Yelp
Maybe I've been watching too many Game of Thrones episodes because I was 100% convinced that this converted 15th century hospice would be my magical medieval hideaway replete with fireplaces, creepy portraits, and cosy times during a recent business trip to Lille in the dead of winter. While the building itself is quite impressive, the hotel's interior is a confluence of genres that frankly don't quite mix well. The modern atrium is light, airy and quite massive, but it was coooold as hell in there. Not exactly the type of hunker down lounge I was hoping for. And while I thoroughly enjoyed my meal of in the downstairs restaurant, or l'Estaminet, the decor felt more like a Marriott than the basement of a historic building. In terms of my room, the bedroom was spacious, but the mishmash of mainstream carpeting, wood paneled walls and Stark chairs just didn't work for me. In a similar genre, The Dominican in Brussels does the monastic-chic theme 10x better. Aside from that, the staff was attentive, and my overall stay quite satisfying, so I'm going with 4 stars since the best intentions were there and my meal was quite tasty.

Yelp
I spent one night here for a business trip. The hotel is amazing and very French. I had what appeared to be an old nun's quarters at the entrance to the hotel. While you are there make sure you wander the hotel area, there are some amazing rooms and gardens throughout the property. The service was excellent and being a Marriott property was a bonus. I highly recommend staying here if you find yourself in the Lille area.

Yelp
Very nice stay here. Breakfast is nice and dinner in the small restaurant offered regional dishes. This used to be a monastery or church and they're still paintings and statues along with the beautiful chapel. It's nice to sit in the interior gardens and relax. Really helpful staff and enjoyable visit.

Yelp
Interesting building - a good effort has been made to retain the character. We stayed in a premier room, which had lots of wonky character. I wasn't at all keen on the shower with a tap positioned to soak you with cold water as you turn it on, with a shower head which would have been trendy five years ago but is now showing its age with a leaking union and sadly drooping bracket. The tiles were a designer's dream, but a cleaner's nightmare, being black uneven glaze with a coating of limescale speckle. The sink was another trendy mistake, looking like some kind of agricultural sluice rather than something you shave in. The hotel is expensive and the service doesn't quite match the price in my view. Breakfast in the room (because the breakfast room was horribly crowded) was a shambles: stuff slopped on the tray, three items clearly ordered in French were forgotten. The good bits were a nice quiet night and a very comfortable bed in an interesting environment.
