I spent weeks researching hotels in NYC. I was planning a trip with my daughter, to celebrate her graduating (last month) from college. I had a specific wish list. Non smoking rooms, not a high rise, far enough away from Broadway, yet close enough to walk. I received friend recommendations on different hotels, but review after review (even 5 star hotels) were many negatives - elevator waits that could take 15-30 minutes, smelling cigarette smoke from other guest rooms, photos of cockroaches, peeled wall paper, hair left in sink from the previous guest etc. Then we happened upon The Library Hotel through a search for boutique hotels.
Since my daughter is a book lover and writer, she immediately knew that's where she wanted to stay. I read many reviews and couldn't believe all the positives. Some mentioned the small rooms but if you look at the photo gallery before you arrive, this shouldn't be a surprise. Could this hotel really be that good? We booked the hotel during Cyber Monday! We arrived on January 24, 2018 for a two night stay.
We arrived at 6:30am, much too early for our room, but the hotel offered to keep our luggage and invited us to their continental breakfast. We were surprised as we were not yet officially guests. After breakfast, we headed out to see the city. At about 8:00am we received a message from Stephanie that our room was ready. We were exhausted from the red eye flight, but by that time we were in Rockefeller Center and decided to continue with our morning plans. We arrived back at the hotel around 1:00pm and very grateful to check in early (regular check in is 3:00).
The hotel is beautiful, spotless, and beyond our expectations. We loved the book theme. Having never stayed overnight in New York before, we weren't sure what to expect. I cannot say enough wonderful things about The Library Hotel. The staff was very accommodating and attentive. Stephanie was wonderful. I heard from her before and during our trip offering assistance and forwarding information.
Regarding location, it was close to everything. Two blocks, if that, to Grand Central Station. One block to the Public Library and Bryant Park is right behind the library. We attended Anastasia on 44th and the walk took less than 15 minutes. One morning, we walked to the Downton Abbey Exhibition, then on to Central Park, lunch at Tavern on the Green and lastly visited the National Museum of History. Returning back to the hotel from the museum was a reasonable $12 Uber ride.
On a side note, we are from Los Angeles and everyone/hotels use low flow shower heads and faucets. Since there is no drought in NYC, the water flowed from the shower head like gentle buckets. Could have stayed in there for hours. Oh, and the elevator - never had to wait more than 20 seconds. If you are researching hotels and wavering on The Library Hotel, you can't go wrong. And yes, this hotel is really THAT GOOD!
