The Best Italian Delis in Metro Detroit | Eater Detroit

"Licavoli’s specializes in calzones, strombolis, pepperoni rolls, and its famous “Italian Stallion” sandwich. This place is as Italian American as it gets, and there are tons of to-go meals ranging from lasagna to soups, but also imported cheese and meats, too." - Danny Palumbo

Google
The Spicy Sicilian pizza is absolutely top tier. I've tried some of their other pizzas as well, and they've all been delicious. The crust is very unique - thin, but soft. I also recommend the eggplant sub.

Google
The pizza is cooked to order and taste wonderful! Very clean location. The ingredients were Generous portions and fresh. The market area has lots of sweet treats and other items to purchase. The staff were friendly and respectful.

Had an absolutely amazing lunch today at Licavoli’s. The interior is so beautiful and the staff were so pleasant. My friend and I sat outside and shared their Italian Sub which was out of this world. You could taste each ingredient and everything was so fresh and high quality. Their pizzas are always fantastic but we were too full from the subs to try a slice! We ordered the Funghi pizza with sausage, mushrooms, and Caramelized onions. If you haven’t been here you’re definitely missing out.

Google
Took my kids to try the pizza. We ordered a good amount of pizza slices. Sadly the slice my son got was cold and did not taste good. It tasted old. The other slices were ok but definitely not heated up. I was a bit disappointed for the kids. The weird thing to me is we ordered the slices in the heated display and got some other pieces which were leads me to guess it was older pizza. The Service was ok. Place was nice. The food did not impress my kids and they love pizza. We will have to try again to see if it was a fluke.

Absolute best pizza and subs on the east side. Amazing.

Google
What a disappointment. We found this cute little place, it looked like a hub in the community, oung kids riding their bikes to get a pop or a snack, but then we ordered they food. It was just BAD. Nothing original. It's an Italian deli, I ordered pizza, and it was made out of some kind of pre-made crust. No flavor, only a few pepperoni, just not as I hoped. My husband had a sub sandwich, and the same thing, just no flavor. We bought pop, but they had no cups if ice. I bought a package of cookies that were dry and crumbly. Just all around a disappointment. Unfortunate.

Google
I had high hopes, but was underwhelmed. After hearing so many rave reviews about the pizza, I was so excited to try it but found my Margherita pizza was very bland. The presentation is beautiful but I felt like it was missing flavor. I kept taking more bites to try to figure out what it was and I don't know if it's the crust, the sauce, or cheese, but overall, it felt like an overpriced pizza for subpar quality. I will say, their cannolis are small but definitely hit the flavor spot! I didn't get a warm and friendly feel after walking in, and it was only me and one other guest. The inside is absolutely beautiful and reminds me of a market in Italy. I really wanted to love it but for the other reasons above, I don't think I'll be back.

Google
We're new to the are and Licavolis continues to be one of our favorite spots to grab a bite to eat. The shop itself is awesome with all kinds of Michigan made products and great snacks. The pizza, subs and calazones are my personal favorites here. Enjoyed the salad and cheese bread this time ad well. Definitely recommend if you're looking for a different pizza than the usual chain spots.

Yelp
THIS PLACE IS AWESOME! So many good choices in the area but I find myself coming back again and again and again. The own is an awesome dude and has a great staff! They are all hard working and cool people. If you like Italian food, THIS IS THE SPOT! Competes with Philadelphia! I suggest the Eggplant Parm Sandwich it's soooo goood! I order two in one day. Also try the meatball parm sub, handmade meatballs, if I wasn't working I would have went back and got a second one.they sell deserts and pasta from Italy and local businesses. Truly awesome people making top notch h delicious food. If you're debating, search no longer, just go! Order now it's fiiiiiiiiiire. I'll be back! Also they sell merch (T-shirts). New fav spot! Much Love, -Zach (Detroit/Philly)

Yelp
Great food ! Awesome take away selection, no need to order or wait. Less expensive than comparable sit down Italian but absolutely just as good, better in many cases. The bolognese is great, maybe the best in the area, and I had an Italian granny. Also very cool vibe, and very family friendly. My kids loved the cookies as well!

Yelp
Great Italian market that also serves excellent pizzas and subs, and you can also purchase beverages, dessert and other items from the store. Prompt service in preparing the pizza and the interior atmosphere is very stylish and Italian. Also their personal pizza with crab is out of this world - very flavorful and the cheese goes perfect with the seafood taste of the crab! Highly recommended and I believe they have other locations elsewhere in Michigan.

Yelp
Charming local market with fresh fare and premade takeaway options and lots of local offerings. The delicious smell of the food hangs in the street outside. The service staff was prompt and friendly both in person and on the phone. Grabbed dinner for the family. We split an original pepperoni and mushroom pizza. The sauce was rich and bright, the dough was soft thin and crisp on the edges. The pepperoni and mushrooms were finely singed on the edge from the stone fired ovens. Absolutely phenomenal. We tried the lemon chicken sub sandwich, it was quite large and the dressing was vibrant and sharp against the lemon breaded chicken. The mozzarella was so fresh. Highly recommend. It was a cold day so I ordered a cup of "Italian penicillin" which is their homebrewed chicken bone broth soup. So hearty and flavorful and it really warmed me up. I will definitely be returning to try more sandwiches and calzones.

Yelp
Best pizza in town. Great pizza and food options with efficient staff. This is my number one choice in the area. Highly recommend.

Yelp
I can see why this place is so popular; it has solid offerings that's great for people on the go. Garden salad- Grape tomatoes, sliced cucumber, mozzarella, and thinly sliced red onions sit atop a bed of romaine and spring mix. They're in strips so you can choose how much of each ingredient you want on your plate. I liked how thin the onions were, so you can control the aromaticness of each bite and not have it be so overwhelmingly spicy. The croutons are home made, and some of them are more browned than others, but all were very crunchy and had herb seasoning on them. The homemade Italian dressing wasn't too pungent and had a lightness that complemented the ingredients. Sugo pasta- The rigatoni had a texture slightly past al dente which was wonderful. The pasta sauce showcased the quality of the ingredients-crushed tomato with garlic and basil. It was perfectly seasoned and wasn't lacking for anything despite the simple ingredients that went into it. Interestingly enough, when I had this for leftovers the next day, the pasta sauce had sweetened up more for some reason, maybe the acid in the sauce was absorbed by the pasta? It was still delicious. Chicken piccata- This is different from what I was expecting. This dish had tender moist boneless, skinless chicken breasts with artichoke hearts in a large amount of brown-grey gravy. I seriously would not have thought it was piccata other than the fact that it was labelled on the tray. There was no lemon or capers to be detected anywhere, and the ratio of solid to liquid was off..if someone had chopped up the food into bite-sized pieces it would easily pass as soup. Cheesy sticks- Essentially a round of their pizza dough that's topped with mozzarella and parmesan. The crust is thin and crispy, and the cheese is nicely melted. The ingredients complement each other; some places use the bread to pile on as much cheese as possible, but this place has a great balance of each component. I'm still not sure what was going on with their piccata, but it was delicious even if it wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe it's a family recipe? I would characterize the food as delivering on flavor without weighing down on your stomach-you can taste the quality in each bite.

Yelp
I'm saddened to update this review after the pizza I just ordered. The crab pizza I ordered tastes like someone POURED salt on it. It's terribly disappointing and unhealthy to add that much salt to food. I will go with other options moving forward. i returned the pizza and was given a refund.

Yelp
Ordered some dinner from here through DoorDash, next time I might just order it directly, DoorDash didn't really let me know how long it would be. I checked in at the counter and they let me know they were working on my order. The chicken parm sub was excellent, good amount of sub but not too much to make it soggy. The chicken was crispy and a good portion. One of my favorite things to get here is the roasted beet salad. I don't think I can ever have too many of the candied walnuts which are just the right amount of sweet but not too candied. The lemon vinaigrette just ties everything together. I love you can shop for other things while you're there. Also believe there is a little spot where you can dine it which I need to do in the future.

Yelp
This was our first time to this Italian market and deli, as we're not eastsiders. We had planned to spend the day in the Grosse Pointe area and had read great reviews about Licavoli's pizza. We stopped in and ordered the Marghe "Rita" pizza and asked for extra basil. Well, we were not disappointed! In fact, the pizza (which was up in about 15 minutes) far exceeded our expectations. It's a NY/East Coast-style thin crust (a definite homage to Neapolitan pizza), done in a stone-fired oven. And it's done perfectly, with a wonderfully tangy sauce and plenty of mozzarella. But the crust may be the real star here - the consistency and flavor are superb. I was in heaven while partaking of my first slice and may have reached nirvana on the second slice. The sauce, the thin tomato slices, and extra basil worked in concert to create a beautiful symphony. We really enjoyed our visit; the staff was friendly and we ate at one of the tables. I do wish there was a little more in terms of Italian grocery items on shelves and it would be nice if they had a deli counter with meats. They do have prepared deli items that look good. We will be back. I highly recommend Licavoli's pizza!

Yelp
I work nearby in Harper Woods and this is amazing. Great subs great pizza can't go around. It's a hit every time.
google avatar

Nicole E.

Yelp
We stopped by here to grab two round pizzas. One Classico "pepperoni" and a MargheRita, that way it covers the meat lovers and vegetarian friendly folks. We brought some other sides from Holiday Mkt K.N. the way to the east side to pick up some pizza. The pizza is thin crust and longer slices, but not NY style. The MargheRita and the Classico were both decent and enjoyed by the guests.

Yelp
I stopped in on a whim and am glad I did. Dennis was incredibly kind and helpful. When I walked in I overheard him thanking a customer for some advice he had given him years prior.. really wholesome moment. He took the time out to give me recommendations steering me in the right direction towards an Italian sub while explaining why the turkey sub was his favorite. Awesome guy, all around great store.

Heidi P.

Yelp
Honestly just a really bad pizza. We had the potato rosemary. Not sure how this is even possible but burnt crust with raw potatoes on top. The rosemary wasn't stripped from the stem so it was big chunks that were not digestible. I prefer to avoid chain pizza and try to support local establishments-cant say I'll be back. This place has always been hit or miss for me but this was a big miss.

Yelp
Been going here since it opened! Best subs, pizza and salad on the Eastside! The Antipasto salad is like a sub in a bowl! Amazing dressing!

Kate C.

Yelp
We get pizza from here regularly and always good. For a change I ordered the wedge salad and it was the best. So impressed that everything was fresh and lettace was so crisp no wilted leafs at all. They will now be my salad go to as well. The service is always good as well.

Yelp
Always on the lookout for that east coast hand tossed pizza. Nothing against Detroit style that's delicious as well, but I grew up near Boston so I do like my nostalgia pie from time to time. A coworker turned me on to this place so I gave it a shot. It's got a cool little market to shop for some essentials while you wait for your pie. What can I say. It's really good! Quality ingredients, nice crispy crust not to thick. I put this on my list along with Luigi's. Great Pie.

Yelp
My made to order pizza was perfectly done and delicious. The very this crust, red sauce and cheese in harmony with my favorite toppings. Reheats in the oven in ten minutes and fantastic.

Yelp
5 stars for the cutest Italian market / pizzeria ever!! We are so excited to here of the second grosse pointe location being that it's right next to us!!!! But this location has served us loyal for years! Having the best authentic baked subs, to thin oven fired pizzas, calzones & their to go section is filled with pre made pasta & protein dishes that all you have to do is warm up at home! The family that owns these places are so sweet and we look forward to continue seeing them here and in the new location in the Village!!!
google avatar

Katie M.

Yelp
We live about 5 minutes from Licavoli's, and I can't imagine getting pizza from anywhere else! It's fantastic, and we absolutely love it. They fire the pizzas when you arrive to pick them up, so they are always hot and fresh. The other menu items are just as great, and the market is fantastic! Everyone is always friendly as well. So lucky to have it close by!

Yelp
We were in the mood for outdoor dining (which the market offered on a fall day). That brought us there and the food will bring us back. For the pizza (we had two one traditional, another more exotic)--the crust simply made for pizza delight. The Italian sub is what they always should be. The calzone (?--or something like it) was shareable and tasty.
google avatar

Yelp
Oh my here I go again giving a 1 star. I must seem like the new person in town always comparing things to NY...well that's pretty much what I'm doing. I'm only reviewing the sandwich didn't get anything else. Once I opened up the sandwich and saw the bread I was like this is not going to be good...wtf kind of bread are they using? I don't know if this is what Michigan folks are used to cause I've tried that Italian place down the road and another one in Farmington hills. All bad. Who is making this bad bread...if this was served in NY that baker prolly end up in Bayonne!!

Michael D.

Yelp
Very good Italian food , the Pizza is very good and the Subs are very good for much better by far then Tropical Smoothie ever thought of being for far less money.
google avatar

Amr M.

Yelp
Family owned. Authentic. Quiet ambience. Service is mostly take out. No plates or cutlery. Pizza is elite. Fast too
google avatar

Ned I.

Yelp
As a local, it's hard not to like Licavoli's. Its location is convenient, and the options are plentiful. Phil, the owner, is well-known around the Pointes and is always friendly. The calzones and subs are both top notch and are arguably the best around. The pizzas are traditional, round, and thin. As someone who prefers Detroit-style pizza, I must say the pesto pizza is ridiculously good. I'd much rather give my business to a place like this over a rival chain.

Marian F.

Yelp
Awesome food !!.... Authentic Italian food !! Outstanding However.... Everyone that works here very cold, no smiles sad to say poor attitude Gross Point snobs !! Mr Duke
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
I know I'll get bullied by local people for this... but that past three times I've gone in to pick up my order they always say "he's popping it in" I wait 15..20..30 minutes patiently each time. Then I heard "nobody told me" or "sorry they forgot" I must just not be liked by this place. All while people walk in, place an order, and get their food ahead of me. Update: they called when I got home, gave us the wrong pizza and asked us to come back. We didn't since it was already late and still didn't offer an apology. Just said "nobody knew you were here" when I clearly walked up twice and talked to someone. All I wanted was an apology. I'm a nobody to them so now I'm just ranting.
google avatar

Joe A.

Yelp
It's simple: Step One - Walk in to this small Italian market Step Two - Order literally any pizza or calzone Step three - Enjoy an amazing meal Repeat
google avatar

Atem A.

Yelp
I have to say get in early for those calzones and pepperoni rolls, they are totally worth it! Great local authentic Italian food and kind people.

Yelp
I liked this place! Leave it to yelp to lead me to some little unknown corner store when I was looking for something to grab for breakfast. It's a store, a very small store with just a few things. A few italian staples, frozen specialty goods etc. The winner is the Hot Counter, the Olive Bar, and the pre-made food to go. They have a delicious assortment of ready to heat and eat Home Made food selections like lasagna, lasagna rolls, manicotti etc. We decided to pick up a breakfast sandwich as stated in their menu _ when asked they said they no longer do it, but they could do a breakfast pizza. So i waited and paid.... We ate the pizza, but it wasnt the best breakfast pizza , matter of fact, it was pretty over cooked and dry. But it was about 11 bucks. If we ever go back- itll be because we were in the area, and we would want to try a personal pizza. if you are into small specialty shops, give it a go, it's nice inside.
google avatar

Steve K.

Yelp
I don't get it. Lots of folks seem to like this place and it's pizza. I've been here maybe three times. Each time I've been treated like an annoyance. Frankly, I also think their pizza is rather meh. There are lots of better pizza choices in the Pointes in my book.
google avatar

Mark D.

Yelp
Just moved to the area, found this little slice of Italy. Tried their Italian sub and their classic pie. Delicious every bite! Been there twice already and expect to visit again and again.
google avatar

Nick B.

Yelp
This is hands down the best pizza I have had in Michigan. Get the margherita pizza! Simple and delicious. Their sauce is the best hands down. Prices are decent. People are very friendly as well.
google avatar

Amie K.

Yelp
One of my favorite sandwiches is served here. The lemon chicken sub. It's out of this world. The pizza is old fashion thin crust deliciousness.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Love the chicken parmigiana sandwich and the service is always friendly and fast. I like sitting outside and eating and they have a little spot indoor also, just a nice Italian market

Taylor J.

Yelp
Easy to order and pick up. Pizza was great. And the cannoli I normally don't even like them but they looked too good not to try.. so I got a few and wish I got more after eating them. Very good and fresh. Nice crisp. Not soggy at all. They have a lot of other great things on the menu looking forward to trying soon.
google avatar

Karen S.

Yelp
We've tried their pizza a few times to give it more than one chance to impress. Unfortunately, the conclusion is that they forget to include ordered items and the pizza is very bland. I wish I could have given them a better review!
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Always amazing ! Cannoli are made per order. The pizza is always good. You can tell the sauce is homemade
google avatar

Anchovies A.

Yelp
The food here was ok nothing stood out but it's a great place to get cheese and I like the ambiance of the market place.
google avatar

Kyle R.

Yelp
Excellent thin crust, stone oven pizza in the land of Detroit-style. Really tasty and will keep coming back!

Michael O.

Yelp
Best pizza in the grosse pointes by far. Sandwiches and salads are great too, nothing here will dissappoint.
google avatar

Paul P.

Yelp
Wife and I ordered two subs for lunch. I got the Italian, she got the meatball. They were simply the best sandwiches we've had in the points, better than bommaritos, uncle Harry's, charlevoix, lunch box, you name it. This is our spot for sandwiches in Grosse Pointe. Don't @ me.
google avatar

Cato C.

Yelp
Pizza was on point. 1st time trying it today and it did not disappoint. Perfect amount of sauce, cheese and ingredients!!!!!!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Pizza pizza pizza pizza. I've never ordered anything but pizza and their pepperoni rolls, but they're amazing. If their other dishes are half as good as the pizzas they will be amazing too.
google avatar

Chris K.

Yelp
This place is consistently excellent. You can't beat the salads here - roasted beet and spinach. So so good. Their pizzas are super thin crust and tasty, consistently great. I honestly am not a big fan of most of their assembled pizzas, so I just choose my own toppings. I prefer pizza from some other places, but this is a much lighter option and the salads bring this place over the top. Will definitely continue to order from here - fantastic!
google avatar

Michael T.

Yelp
I have NOTHING bad to say about Licavoli's other than I'm not certain of the proper pronunciation of the name. Their personal pizzas are amazing, and super quick, and their variety of prepared foods, drinks, and various other Italian items is great. I'd order pizza from them any day.
google avatar

Lori S.

Yelp
The subs from here are so good and can't best the price! Best deal around! Yummy! They sell amazing thing here!
google avatar

Kathryn G.

Yelp
I have lived on the Eastside for most of my life, driving past this place for years without stepping foot inside. So upset I waited this long to discover this place! Licavoli's is a cute Italian market with some seating to eat inside. They have high quality products in the refrigerated section, including take and bake entrees, as well as a deli area where you can order a plethora of ready made food items, like pizza, Stromboli, pepperoni rolls, soup, subs, etc. Everything I have tried so far has been delicious. Based on how I like my pizza, their pizza might just be one of my favorites now. A thin crust, but not too thin, with amazing well balanced sauce, cooked to perfection. Last time we tried to order a pizza there was an almost 2 hour wait for one, so you know it's good when they have wait times like that. The take and bake entrees are fabulous. I love their palomino sauce. not too thick, but the right consistency packed with flavor. I thought I knew which palomino sauce around town was my favorite, until I gave theirs a whirl. Their lasagna was another meal we purchased which was delicious. A little too much red sauce, but it was easy to set some of it aside. The pepperoni rolls are delectable. the perfect amount of peps and cheese inside. they use a generous amount sesame seeds on their breads for pepperoni rolls and Stromboli's but they don't fall off and make a mess everywhere when eating and are toasted perfectly. They also get in cookies from Brooklyn, which I have also seen at other Italian Bakeries. I found some pistachio biscotti and it is literally to die for if you are a fan of pistachios. There are a variety of cookies to select from, but get there early so they don't sell out. The last item I have tried is the Italian Penicillin Soup. It's a chicken broth with the option to add noodles. They add these last when they pour your order so the pasta keeps its integrity. It is such a simple soup, but my gosh, it's delicious. PERFECT for a cold day. I'm a fan for life and will continue to give them my business. 10/10!

Yelp
Great subs and even better pizza. I highly recommend this place. Fair pricing and prompt service.
