I was in Abilene for a day trip. I wanted to find a place with really good pie, and well, the reviews of this place were amazing, and I wanted to check it out. Briefly, this place was everything I thought it would be: Amazing!
First of all, the place is small...cozy but spacious. They had my favorite tea's...Taylors of Harrogate...which was my first pleasant surprise. This is a gem of a tea, and if I was staying in town a bit longer, I would have enjoyed a cup of tea with my pie. Sadly, I had to take it to go, because I had a time commitment.
Next, the staff was friendly. The board with the pie names was a delightful touch! It added charm to the place. Again, I was in a bit of a hurry, but they had it very tastefully decorated...cozy is the word I'd use...a place that just says "Relax...sit down...have some pie and a cup of tea." Literally, I felt my blood pressure drop a notch once I walked in! The staff was very friendly and helpful. I interacted with three people, and all three were friendly, warm, like seeing old friends!
Now, the important part: The taste. I bought a full "The Washington" (Cherry Crumble" for my neighbor...I owed him a big one, and after he and his wife tried the pie, they asked "Where did you get this?" We live in Austin, so when I told him where, he said "Road Trip!". I assured him I am going up there next month, and he wants another. "Best Cherry Pie...Ever!" His words.
My wife had the "Chocolate Heaven"...her words. Really, it was the Chocolate Buttermilk. Rich, creamy, deep chocolate...Devine! She especially loved the chocolate crust, because no one does that anymore, but the pie overall was a delight. She is looking forward to my next trip!
Me, I had the Key Lime. It was the perfect mix of "Tart/Sweet" lime and a flaky crust that had to be handmade from scratch. The details reminded me too much of what my Grandmother made for me and my brothers when we visited...it brought back memories!
All in all, this is some of the best pie I have ever tasted. I will be back for the pie!
