In Hawaii, Nothing Says You’re Home Like Zippy's, Mac Salad, and Spam | Bon Appétit

"An all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant in Valencia, California, where family visits sometimes yielded abbreviated versions of beloved Hawaiian combos — for example, a pared-down Zip Pac with beef teriyaki, mac salad, and rice." - ByElyse Inamine

Google
This is an outstanding Sushi bar. Out of all the sushi bars in Santa Clarita Valley, this one is just a different level of quality. Their sushi rolls are simple and traditional, with excellent portions. This spot is consistently not just good but GREAT every time.

Google
I used to come here regularly. It is over a 40 mile trip, but the sushi i well worth it. Saturday night was rather busy, but the food is still excellent. Had to wait turns sitting at the sushi bar for AYCE, but our chef was very good at keeping the sushi flowing. Spicy Tuna salad is always fantastic <amazing>. New item i had never tried is a Spicy Octopus Salad. Out of this world delicious . Prices have gone up, so for AYCE sushi, it is considerably more than most places i go to. But for those two options, i will definitely make this trip at least once a week. Dinner after a trip to Magic Mountain. They got more waiters, si the service is even better than before.

I miss Light and Healthy!!! Jack, Miguel, and all the staff. Absolutely the best Sushi!!! Sushi Chefs are so talented and friendly. Best fresh quality of fish. The skills are the best and presentation is amazing. We moved to Smithfield, Virginia and have been very disappointed with all the Sushi restaurants here.

Google
I’ve lived in Japan. I love food. This is goooooood! Crispy Salmon skin salad. Unagi was just right. Even the tempura shrimp heads. Itsmaesan came out to chat with us. Just like a Yokohama neighborhood izakaya but here in SC :)

Light & Healthy is THE BEST SUSHI IN CALIFORNIA! Maybe I should say in the West coast, I now live in Washington state and ever time I travel to the Santa Clara area I have to stop here. So essentially I traveled 1100 miles for this deliciousness! I’ve have turned so many people on to this place! Every time we bring new people they love the fish 🐠 & they continue to bring people. The fish is fresh and the cuts are perfect as they melt in your mouth. It’s a very small place that opens for dinner at 5 so get there at 5 to get a seat or you will be waiting. They do have all you can eat it’s expensive but if you are hungry it’s worth it. Thank you Jack for all your years of service there as a sushi Chef.

Kristin E.

Google
I've been going here since 2011. Thirteen years of consistent excellence. The highest quality cuts of fish, fantastic customer service and unique flavor combinations. I live almost 500 miles away in a food mecca but all I dream about is Light and Healthy sushi. Once a year I get the privilege to enjoy this experience. I'm so grateful. Check the photos out.

Google
I love Light and Healthy, it's so freaking amazing. I grew up eating here and moved to Santa Barbara, but I still make trips to take my family there whenever I can. There is no sushi this good in SB!! Love Jack and the team. It may seem a little expensive, but the "all you can eat" is a great deal, and you won't find sushi this good around.

Jean A Giraldo C.

Google
Some of the freshest Sushi, Sashimi and Nigiri around, I legit drive 45min to an 1 hr 10 min depending on traffic just to eat here. All you can eat but its not your typical all you can eat. I love the white fish Sashimi and the Spicy Tuna Salad.

Yelp
You get the warm family run restaurant feel here! Welcoming, the chef/owner makes you feel like you're in Japan enjoying fresh sushi. You don't feel rushed, he'll do omakase style so you just sit and enjoy. Priced very reasonably. Limited menu but great quality. My least favorite was the spicy tuna handroll, my most favorite and I think the crowd pleasers are the spicy salads which is sashimi on a bed of cucumbers.

Yelp
Another yummy visit to our favorite/the best AYCE sushi bar in the area! On a Monday night I don't think they anticipated a full house because they could have used a 3rd guy behind the sushi bar.. but Eric and Yoshi were working hard to fill the numerous large takeout orders pouring in while taking care of everyone at the bar and sitting at the tables. The guys and Mikki were hustling to keep our glasses filled and the tables clean. The ambiance is casual. No weird, overly sauced rolls with little sparklers on top.. just basic, good and authentic sushi and sashimi. I didn't take pics of everything, I was too busy nom nomming! It's always a good day to enjoy dead fish at Light & Healthy. I've been going there for more than half of my life!

Yelp
Delicious sushi, always fresh tasting with amazing house made Serrano ponzu sauce and chili oil. Has AYCE. My favorite sushi spot in town.

Alejandra L.

Yelp
We went and ordered chicken teriyaki a la carte and the 3 sushi hand rolls with two extra miso soups. We only got three soups even though both the chicken teriyaki and hand tools are supposed to come with a soup each. We also only got one salad even though both combos are supposed to come with a salad. We were still charged for both of the miso soups we ordered even though we didn't get one of the soups. The sushi is better than some other places we've been to. There were two women doing AYCE and the sushi chef was very attentive and gave them everything they ordered. So at least they were happy. We decided we won't be returning. How do you miss a soup and salad when it's written as included in the menu?

Yelp
I've been looking for a new sushi spot. I found it. There's no fake cheesy Japanese decorations that sushi restaurants have. This place makes you feel like your in Japan eating at a local Sushi haunt. The owner and staff are super charming. Great energy. The menu has all of the traditional fish and rolls. They'll customize to your liking. This place has been here for 40 plus years and now I know why. Long live light and healthy!

Yelp
We have become regulars here because the food and service continues to amaze us. The fish is fresh, the rolls are delicious, the staff are friendly. This time we had a roll and they brought us ponzu to eat with it as a recommendation. They were spot on, the ponzu definitely made the roll even better. The spicy tuna salad is a must, we order every time. We also had Sapporo's which were a great addition to our meal. The restaurant is small so it's good to come in smaller groups or be open to sitting at the bar.

Yelp
My favorite sushi spot in SCV - I have been going here since I was a child. Always has fresh sushi.

Yelp
Good hand rolls, okay sushi, below average service, filthy bar. Overall, at a high price of $60+/per person, all-you-can-eat is NOT worth it at this location. I'm surprised the ratings for this location are so high - maybe we just had an unusually bad experience? But at the price point, there are so many better sushi restaurant options. The hand rolls and cut rolls taste great, hence the 2 stars (instead of one). Everything else lacked. Management needs to hire another chef and server to accommodate busy hours. We did not get offered drink refills once during our entire stay. When ordering sushi at the bar, wait time was 5-10 min per single order (at the request of the server because the chef line can't handle their head count in addition to online orders). Additionally, the bar is absolutely filthy if you look closely. I should've taken pictures, but I probably don't have to because I'd bet it'll still be the same for customers who decide to sit there close to the time of this review.

Yelp
I have never left a bad review but two roaches ran across the bar table ! And the chef gave no mind and said it's okay they are going to come out due to fumigation. They offered nothing after we lost our appetite to eat.

Yelp
All time fav sushi spot. Great chefs. Easy service. I do not leave hungry. Love love love this place!

Yelp
Our new favorite place!! Everyone is so nice and they treat us like family. Eric is the best! He knows what we like. I love it!! Food is fresh! Delicious! Best sushi in town!

Keivan J.

Yelp
I had an amazing experience with Ricardo, great atmosphere, very good quality and overrall pleasant experience. I trusted his judgment with each order that I placed with their all You can eat. I highly recommend that way. I am excited to go back again as this was my first time there and the best all you can eat sushi I had, and I have been to many places over the years.
google avatar

Yelp
I love sushi, and I especially love good all you can eat experiences that center around quality fresh fish, nigiri and hand rolls. At the risk of giving away this secret of a gem in Santa Clarita, I can honestly say that this is the spot for that. If you were looking for crazy oversized specialty rolls go elsewhere; this is for the authentic and simple sushi perfection. Perfect light sauce, delicately placed toppings and perfect preparation. I made this a sushi experience that I can never forget, and it will be one that I will repeat very often. Eric runs an incredible bar and is a master sushi chef. I was honored to have a seat at this incredible sushi bar.

Yelp
Top notch sushi spot in Santa Clarita, and honestly better than the majority of places in LA. They've got a sushi bar and also dining tables. The sushi quality here is really good, and the owner, Miguel, another fantastic chef, has been running the business for the last 35 years. Eric, our chef, was exceptionally helpful and delightful. He puts care and precision into each sushi dish. Some of the plates here included a beautiful sauce/concoction of sesame oil, ponzu sauce, and other spices. It makes for a killer sauce and flavor. Their yellowtail is to die for here. All you can eat for $46/per for lunch. I've always been lucky with parking here, which may mean that it's not actually that tough. There is in fact plenty of parking around the building in its parking lot, but I've always found a spot close to the entrance. I've come here for business meetings and birthdays. It's a humble sushi restaurant, offering a clean and high quality service.

Yelp
My wife and I tried LIght & Healthy tonight on the recommendation from a friend who goes there often. We're glad he did! From what he says, this place has been here for 21 years, although we missed it somehow. If you're looking for a fancy, expensive build-out, this is not the place. It's in an older shopping center and the shop shows its age. What it IS is clean, comfortable and welcoming. They have a long bar on the right and booths on the left. My wife and I chose to sit at a table. The service was prompt and attentive. I had the "Sushi Paradise", an assortment of sushi along with a Cali roll. It's served with miso soup and salad. I also ordered a side of spicy salmon roll. Our server asked if I really wanted that much food, but I did..and ate it all. The wife ordered their tempura, which was a huge portion of shrimp and vegetables, also served with miso and salad. I tried one of her shrimp, and the batter was very light and tasty. I know about five words in Japanese, and when she brought my soup, I said "thank you" in Japanese. She brightened up and asked "Oh...you speak Japanese?", to which I had to confess to my total limitation in the language. "But, you spoke Japanese" she said. "Yes", I said (also in Japanese), but that was it. We laughed. She was very nice and accommodating. I'm guessing owner. The fish on my sushi was very fresh and flavorful, and the rice was perfect. It was just sticky enough, but not heavy, and everything was very good, especially the cut rolls. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for fresh sushi. It was well prepared, well presented and tasted great. I asked if they can do Omakase, and she brought me the all you can eat menu. $45 to sit at the bar and eat everything the Chef throws at you sounds good to me.

Yelp
Great service, Miguel attention to our needs was impeccable. The staff were friendly and attentive. My favorite sushi place for the last 25 years.

Yelp
Best place in the area for NiGiRi and sashimi. They offer limited menu of ayce at the bar sitting does get packed so come asap when they open. Kitchen items are pretty good as well. If you're a none seafood eater. For roll eaters, the rolls are kinda ugly here and disappointing but they have mastered the nigiri. So if you're more traditional on Japanese sushi this will be a good spot for you. Customer service is great! From the chefs to the servers everyone is really nice. Drinks are refilled along with empty plates being consistently picked up.

Yelp
Everything was excellent. From the food to the service to the music, I loved it all. The chef was also amazingly kind and helpful.

Yelp
I was at Valencia Pharmacy for one of my school rotations when I was planning on what to get for my lunch break. A quick yelp search had me eyeing Light & Healthy, as it was a 5 minute walk, if not less. I called in an Assorted Sushi combination (which came with salad, filled to the brim and pretty yummy miso soup), and it was ready within 10-15 minutes. I got there a little early and was welcomed by 3 staff members (all with masks) - one by the bar, another by the cashier, and another - an elderly man. As I was waiting for the food, I got to speak a little with the elderly man, and in asking how this business was doing in light of the pandemic, he simply shook his head. It pained me to see how this hole in the wall gem is struggling; given the fresh-tasting quality of the fish, please consider coming here to satisfy your sushi cravings as it did mine. If I'm in the area, I'll definitely come back here to support a deserving small business.
google avatar

Adam W.

Yelp
Pretty good sushi but overpriced. Also for a place that's called "light & healthy" I have never smelled a sushi place that had such a strong scent of frying oil.

Cindy D.

Yelp
Just had lunch today and it was awesome! It had been years since we've been here and decided to try it for my birthday . Eric took great care of us! Thank you! Fish was fresh and loved the spicy ponzu sauce. We'll be back!
google avatar

Jay R.

Yelp
We wanted to like this place. We got the all you can eat. It is by far the most expensive all you can eat that I have found I this valley, and has the most restrictions on what can be ordered. No rainbow or any type of specialty roll, very few kitchen offerings which doesn't even include gyoza. A limit to how many orders of salmon or yellow tail that can be ordered, and only a few different types of sushi and rolls are offered at all. The AYCE is $44.95 per person. So my dinner for 4 was about $230 for not much. Will definitely stick to other places out here that are more In The $30 range and offer more choices ** I would like to add that there was nothing wrong with the food or service. My rating is based solely off the selection and price for the All you can eat.

Yelp
First time to try this place, definitely glad we drove Santa Carita to check it out. Very old building the restaurant has been around for 33 or 35 years. The building is dated, and there's a lot of things to look at in the dining room. We got there right at open and the guys inside making a Sushi were pretty terrific, they would take her order verbally and just handed over, it's a definitely a simple back to basics kind of sushi,.
google avatar

Kelcey V.

Yelp
My husband grew up eating here as a child and now I'm glad I get to enjoy it with him. We live down in San Diego now but my husband drove alllllll the way up to Santa Clarita for this! I'm from Hawai'i and I know fresh seafood and the places I've done to in SD just don't compare. Light & Healthy Sushi Bar has the best handrolls I've had so far. We ordered about 10 hand rolls: spicy tuna, spicy scallops, and spicy crab & shrimp. He was able to call in his order and pick it up. It traveled well for the 100+ miles back home. The handrolls are always amazing. The ratio of rice to the other fillings is perfect. There's just enough rice and more filling you are really getting your moneys worth. Everything is always extremely fresh and I've never felt like any of the seafood were about to turn over. I wish we were able to dine in again for AYCE! But look at the soy sauce containers! They could've printed out labels, write on the container with a sharpie, or just not even label it at all...but instead there are little notes with a hand written label AND wrapped in plastic. And other restaurants just toss these liquids in your bag without wrapping them in plastic. To me, that shows how much you care about your business and the little things. I appreciate this gesture. If we lived closer to Santa Clarita, we would be here WEEKLY. I highly recommend! Please see this small business if you are looking for great quality seafood. Thank you so much for our meal!

Manuel F.

Yelp
Ben going there for quite some time. Service is great the sushi is even better. Very casual setting.
google avatar

Lindsey K.

Yelp
Favorite sushi place of all time. We ordered take out since that's all we can do currently. We got 5 spicy crab and scallop hand rolls, 2 spicy yellow tail hand rolls, 2 spicy yellowtail cut rolls, 2 spicy tuna cut rolls AND 1 spicy salmon cut roll. It was only about $100. They have THE BEST ahi tuna I've ever had at a restaurant. Their spicy tuna salad is also an amazing choice and probably my favorite thing on their menu. The employees and the owner are so amazing. I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Karla G.

Yelp
The food itself is so amazing. I never have a problem with how amazing the Chefs are or how fresh the fish is, that's only reason why I keep coming back, but I noticed ever since the first time I've came the server/waitress with the dyed blonde hair is so rude, when you ask her for even a water, she looks at you with such bad face. She's very short with her responses, and she seems more like you're bothering her, even though she spent most of the time sitting down on her phone in the front or in the back. That's the only reason why I'm rating this place so low because yes, the food is amazing but it feels horrible to feel like you're bothering them by being there. Too much attitude
google avatar

Natalie B.

Yelp
BEST SUSHI EVER! Best service and always a fun time!! I always enjoy my experience here! The sushi is amazing and the service is as well! They also gave some rice and mini hand rolls for my nephew! Super sweet

Jasmin S.

Yelp
The sushi here is amazing!! The yellowtail, salmon, and whitefish melt in your mouth. Also, the mackerel? Top notch. I get why people like mackerel now. I would go here weekly if I could, but the prices make it a better fit for a special occasion. I think that's pretty standard pricing for good sushi though.
google avatar

Cat N.

Yelp
I'm glad someone told me about this place. Super friendly family type establishment. It's small but cozy. This place is Japanese owned and operated. It reminded of Japan when I was speaking with the sushi chefs and staff. They have plenty of options but I decided to go with AYCE at the bar. There's a special menu at the bar for that and you can request some modifications like with ponzu sauce, spicy, or with chili oil, etc. You can do nigiri, maki, or handle rolls, and cooked kitchen items. All fresh hand made to order. Only at $35 a person. I ordered the tuna, yellowtail, salmon (with and without sauce), squid, octopus, mackeral, shrimp, salmon roe, and hot tea. Everything was delicious. The ratio of rice to fish was well thought out. It all tasted fresh. My favorite was the yellowtail. Fyi: They will put wasabi in the nigiri unless you tell them otherwise. My review is based on the nigiri only and I would definitely come back next time when I'm in town. Thank you!

Emma G.

Yelp
Amazing food!!! I have been going here for 14 years and every time I go it never disappoints. Everyone there makes you feel like you're at home, everyone feels like family and the service is amazing! I always crave their food and as soon as I walk through the door I get a whiff of the smell of the sushi and my mouth drools!
google avatar

Hugo F.

Yelp
I have to say after years of going to my favorite spot sushi 661, i have found a new go to spot...Light and Healthy Sushi, just go chefs choice and you will be amazed at the taste and quality of their fish, AMAZING!
google avatar

Lucy Z.

Yelp
This place is the best! Delicious all you can eat sushi. The spicy tuna salad is amazing!
google avatar

Judy L.

Yelp
The best kept secret of SCV. Been going here for almost a decade-- first visit and I was hooked. Fish delivered daily, real Japanese servers and chefs, nice homey feel... what more could you ask for? Miguel makes good sushi, as does Yoshi.
google avatar

Jeffrey M.

Yelp
I cannot even begin to understand how this restaurant has four stars. I left feeling frustrated and ripped off. First of all, the food is not good. The Nigiri was small and thin, and the rice had a strange flavor to it. Secondly, the chef would not write down anyone's order. Obviously, this is fine if he has a good memory, but he made at least two mistakes every time I ordered, often forgetting multiple items. I also mentioned a food allergy which he totally forgot about. The menu is extremely limited during lunch and your only choice is all you can eat. I don't mind a good all you can eat place, but I like to have the option to order À la cart if I want to. This place only offers the most basic items and even put limits on salmon sushi, something I have never seen another all you can eat sushi restaurant do. The owner and staff were nice enough, but it was insufficient to make up for the low quality service and food. I can very comfortably say that I will never be returning to this restaurant.
google avatar

Tim V.

Yelp
Spotty service, Chef plays favorites with who he provides service to. Waited 35 minutes before waiting for an order as he spent time serving the couple next to me 2 rounds. ( he apologized and said they were his friends). At leas the price is good and nothing wrong with the food.

Mario F.

Yelp
Quality sushi. Miguel serves the perfect ratio of rice and fish (master)! Staff provides Japanese hospitality. You are taken back to early 70's ambiance with the owner Jack.

Rocco T.

Yelp
Personalized service, great service, been going here since 1980, the wife and I have been going there since 1986 and love it. We loved when Jack (the owner) had his collection of base ball caps on the walls was there. The Sushi fish is is super fresh and portions are super large. The interior has been made a lot more sterile since the 94 earth quake, then again after idiotic pandemic scare. The staff have soldiered on through it all and continued the quality of product and service. Oh by the way we like sashimi, we do not like all the fancy fu fu rolls, so I can not comment on them. We sat and watched the slow speed drive the murderer OJ lead the police on, messing up LA Friday rush hour traffic from SD to Brentwood while threatening to shoot himself, he should have. lots of great times there, to manny to list.

Denise B.

Yelp
We love going here. Everything is always fresh. It is a smaller place that doesn't take reservations so it's better to get there earlier. They can get busy but they definitely hustle to keep everyone happy.
google avatar

Jonny M.

Yelp
Best sushi in Santa Clarita! Such a gem. Better than a lot of places in Los Angeles in general
google avatar

Rodrigo R.

Yelp
Best sushi hidden gem in SCV! The hand rolls are legitimately Nippon-meets-Socal! Mikki rocks as the host of this legendary spot for sushi in the Santa Clarita Valley! My wife has been coming here since 1989 with her family and our children have started early here as well! Excellent family and environment and super friendly staff!!!!
google avatar

Zan H.

Yelp
If you like low quality, cheap sushi you might like this place. They have an all-you-can-eat menu which should have been a red flag but this place came recommended so we tried it. The first thing I noticed was how stale the rice was. The fish quality wasn't great but it wasn't bad. The service was decent. Nothing special, you get what you pay for.

Dave B.

Yelp
First time in over 5 years and I can not rave about this place enough. The sushi was so fresh and amazing. The sauce was just enough and AYCE was plentiful. If you want a true Japanese experience without all the fusion/glitz this is the place. A diamond in the rough for Santa Clarita!
google avatar

Pete N.

Yelp
"Japanese owned and operated". Great pricing. If you're looking for a fancy restaurant then this is not for you. But if you're want delicious Sushi. This is the best spot. Between Jack, Miki and Miguel the service is excellent. The only thing better is the food. I've been eating sushi here since the early 90s. I've had sushi at many other places. Not fair to even compare them with Light Healthy. Fortunately I found this place, unfortunately sushi elsewhere just doesn't cut it. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Angela F.

Yelp
Excellent sushi a dicey location. It's quiet and you enjoy a conversation and the food. The service here is great as well. If you want real authentic food come on in! We ordered egg rolls, a shrimp tempura, and veggie tempura roll. Light, healthy, and fresh. They have a few other options besides sushi if you are not into sushi.
google avatar

Liliana L.

Yelp
Their sushi is amazing. If you know fish, you know that they have very clean fresh fish.
google avatar

Elizabeth L.

Yelp
I grew up in Santa Clarita, and watched the town grow and grow. It's so wonderful that this place is still around AND still has such excellent service and quality. Not only do I have fond memories of this place being my first sushi experience, I am so happy to report that since relocating back to my home town this staple of the community is still thriving and fantastic. Fresh food, fantastic service. Keep up the good work
google avatar

Gabriel S.

Yelp
I've been coming here for over 30 years and to this day it is still my favorite Sushi place. I live in Hollywood but still make the drive to come here. I've spent a lot of time in Japan, and still love Light and Healthy most! Jack (the owner) is funny witty and a bit sarcastic with his regulars and keeps me coming back, along with all the amazing staff. Miguel and Yoshi are truly sushi masters and have become friends over the years. Mikki is always there right when you need her and always smiling. It's also nice to know they are truly Japanese and Japanese speaking. It makes it all the more authentic! I'm excited for my next visit just thinking about it!
