Where to Find the Best Fried Chicken in Portland, Oregon | Eater Portland

"One might expect to find a restaurant called Lighthouse in the other Portland, on the opposite coast, yet this off-the-beaten-track, old-school Linnton classic is a favorite among Portland chefs, especially for its fried chicken. Serious chicken heads should start with the dry-spiced, Louisiana-style chicken wings, served with classic blue cheese dressing and celery, before moving on to the hearty fried chicken dinner — boneless, buttermilk-brined fried chicken stacked on top of mashed potatoes, gravy, and braised greens." - Ron Scott

This is a great spot for food after mountain biking at Rocky Point! Check it out. Parking out front so you can keep an eye on your bike or there's a patio for the side lot. I got the nachos and they were surprisingly amazing, my friend got the french fries which were perfect. We had draft beers and ciders, the service was awesome, food was fast and delicious, prices are great, everything was very clean, and we will be back!

Google
My partner and I love visiting this bar—it’s become one of our favorite spots, especially when Siri is working! She’s incredibly kind, attentive, and always fun to talk to, which makes every visit even better. The vibe is always welcoming, and the food never disappoints. If you go, don't miss the pulled pork sandwich—it's seriously mouthwatering and one of the best we've had. Whether you're stopping by for a quick drink or settling in for a full meal, this place delivers every time. Highly recommend!

Google
The food was excellent. We were told that it was the busiest Tuesday they have ever experienced. Our waiter was very friendly and he explained that due to the traffic back up this evening, they got swamped. We had to ask a few times for our drinks. He even asked if he had forgotten anything, of which we informed him that we had not received our drinks or clam chowder. One clam chowder arrived after we received our entrees. Then the sodas and ice tea arrived, another reminder about the second order of chowder being missing, but it never arrived. We informed a lady who had delivered our meals earlier, and she appeared to have her purse in hand and snarkily replied, "Sorry, I'm leaving for the night. You will have to ask your waiter." It was just a busy night, I guess. Return visit...8/17/24 Today, we had the best server who made excellent recommendations for our lunch selections. I went with a special benedict with avocado, tomatoes, and Hollendaise, plus hashbrowns. My friend went with the country benedict, which is a buttermilk biscuit, sausage gravy, fried chicken, poached eggs, more gravy, and is served with hashbrowns. All very good. I bumped my rating back up to 5 stars.

Google
This place is my not-so-secret secret spot. Been on a mission to find a place with wings that remind me of ones back in Virginia and Lighthouse has come the closest. I make the drive out here whenever I really am craving a solid wing. French fries are great. Service is always killer. Pool table and plenty of tables. It’s truly a gem

Google
Everything was made fresh and not microwaved from a box. My pulled pork sandwich had that smoke house slow smoke delicious flavor to it accompanied by a sweet sticky sauce 😋. The fries are made fresh and not frozen. OMG delicious. My wife got to enjoy the fish and Chips. Beer battered cod with a local brew. This place was Unexpectedly delicious. Menu is simplified with easy choices. You can't go wrong. I hope you get the pleasure of meeting Armad. 😊 what a great person to meet. So much life in that guy

Google
very weird vibe from this place. we walk in and it’s like a sit down restaurant but there was no host? so we sit ourselves in a booth and after about 5-10 mins a waitress comes by and nonchalantly asks “have you guys gotten menus yet…?” we say no so she comes back with menus. we order with another disinterested waiter. the food & drinks are solid and filling (i recommend the $10 cranberry drink); good portion size. but i can’t shake the vibe that the staff is very unhappy.

Google
A polished version of a neighborhood bar and grill. We had the hash browns, which were delicious. Staff is friendly and attentive, and the inside is a gleaming version of traditional watering hole. Great place to go after a hike in Forest Park.

Google
We went for lunch got there at 11 which is when they open. The hamburger and fish sandwich were very good but the fries were day old. The fries were cold and hard. They must have had fries left from the day before and the passed then on to us

Yelp
My friend and I were coming off a trail and had lunch here. The staff were so, so friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu. I loved the decor which had layers of cool stuff. I was impressed that they had so many house-smoked meats. The turkey sandwich I had was just delicious and perfectly flavored. I look forward to coming back next time I'm in the area.

Yelp
I always look forward to grabbing lunch at this half dive bar, half restaurant on the way to Scappoose. One side is cooler, darker and basic, with a long bar on one side and tables scattered around the rest of the room (the bar part); the other side, where I like to post up, is brighter, with more windows and warm wood tones. Way more cozy. Looks like the menu has changed a bit since I last visited; breakfast is only offered on weekends, so this last time I had the chipotle chicken tacos which had a very nice subtle zip to them. Great flavors and good sauces but alas the chicken was dry and a bit overcooked. Service was outstanding though, as always, and I'm sure I'll be back. The vibe is low key but inviting and the drive past Forest Park and the St John's Bridge alone is worth it.

Benis P.

Yelp
One of my fcking earth tacos didn't have barely any meat on it. They was cold too. And the mac and also cheez was DRY. Pulled pork was good tho.

Yelp
Stopped by here tonight finally. I pass it all of the time and it always seems pretty busy. The service was good and the food was good. It did take a long time for the food to actually make its way out though. I noticed that with all of the tables. It's a nice place to stop and have a drink if you're in the area. I will say that my nephew loves this lace and is here all of the time.

Yelp
Our bartender/server was great! She gave us some history about Linton that we never knew about which was the kind of thing we like to find out when we're trying something/somewhere new! It's a great "hide-away" bar if you're from St. John's or even if you're just passing by. Great food! I would give the place as a whole 5 stars, but the food is just 4 stars. It's not horrible food, just not 5 stars. You know what I mean? I look forward to another runaway date here!

Yelp
This is such a hidden gem! Whoever put together the music playlist deserves an award. P.s the food was incredible.

Yelp
I drove out here past the Saint John bridge on the highway, 30 to meet a friend. I had never heard of this place, but he said it was a quiet place to have a nice visit. Upon arriving, I was really charmed by the decorations on the inside. Fairy country cabin. We ordered the special for that day. Being a weekend they had homemade biscuits! They were the best biscuits I've had in a while. Light with a crispy exterior, so buttery and delicious. We got the country fried steak that came with fried potatoes and your choice of eggs. The scrambled eggs were cooked perfectly and the country fried steak was homemade and so crispy delicious. The service was pretty good, considering our waiter was the only one working our section. She was super busy, but we were taken care of. I will definitely come back here and try some other of their delicious looking eights. Well worth the drive.

Yelp
This place used to have some of the best burgers back in the 90s, but ownership or the cooks changed a bunch of times and now it's not as great as it was... the service is great, but the food not so much

Alana R.

Yelp
My husband was on his way home from work and decided to stop here to pickup dinner. We've passed by this bar many times but have never actually eaten here so didn't know what to expect. To our pleasant surprise, the lemongrass burger was really tasty! Def recommend it for any vegans passing through and wanting a delicious and quick takeout meal. Will have to stop by again soon.

Yelp
Came here for a second time. We ordered the Ruben sandwich (which was killer), cheeseburger with fries (make sure you tell the server how you like your meat cooked), beef nachos and the fried chicken sandwich. All the food we got was very flavorful. The nachos came out cold and the server was very receptive and immediately corrected the issue by having them remake it. They came out the 2nd time hot and delicious, so no knock on them for taking care of it. Overall, we will be back.

Yelp
The food was shockingly better than I expected and we had to order a second smoke sandwich to go so we could study that mind blowing delights of it!!! The Ambiance is cute rustic sea dog hide out style. Jamie our server was above and beyond friendly, fun and informative. You might think locals only or trucker stop given its HWY 30 Linton location but it's a worth the drive from Portland kind of welcoming fun place with great food!

Yelp
Stopped in here after a hike in Forest Park and was pleasantly surprised! True dive bar feel with super friendly bartenders, cold beers, and delicious food. It was quiet/not super packed for the week day lunch rush. The Philly was super tasty! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Absolutely love this place. They have the best burgers around and friendly staff. I always go here if I want a good burger

Yelp
Love this spot! Service is always amazing in the bar, food is super yummy and the scene is fun with lots of light house/ship deco.

Yelp
We were in that area, picking strawberries and doing our weekly walk, and it's time for food-to-go picnic as part of our ritual pandemic couple activity. We search for the nearest restaurant and Lighthouse was our choice to go. Ordering was very easy. We ordered the Crispy Fish-wich and the Reuben Sandwich, both came with house fries. Both sandwiches were excellent! DH noticed that the corned beef in the Reuben was extremely favorable. He speculated that the beef was prepared specially at the restaurant. Sure enough, checking the menu, it was revealed that the corned beef was house-cured corned beef. It was fantastic! My crispy fish-wich was about 4" thick, contained colesaw and special restaurant sauce. Luckily, we always bring knife & fork with our picnic bag, that we were able to cut it in 1/4's (so was the Reuben), so I CAN finger eat it, since my mouth doesn't open 4" wide! It was a messy task, but this is what desperate hungry people do! When the food is messy, it must be tasty . . . and THIS WAS! We were too pre-occupied pigging out on our sandwiches, we left very little plus most of our fries behind for 'leftover dinner' pig out! (Note: when planning a picnic, make sure you have packed with you cold bottled water from home, and extra water (doesn't have to be cold) for rinsing off your fingers! They come in handy, when messy eaters get all over your fingers! I'm not, just sauce dripping at everything.

Yelp
This is just based off the food. We come here a lot and love every one who works here. Sharon, Siri and Layla work their tails off and the food has nothing to do with them. That being said I'll post pics of the fish and chips and my husbands Philly cheesesteak. The fish and chips was soggy and more like frozen fish sticks. Very tiny portion for way too much money. The Philly has no flavor and the meat was chunky, chewy and almost not edible. The fries are always good freshly cut and yummy I feel like there food is a hot or miss, but not always bad this was just one of those big misses.

Yelp
Love this spot. Great bartenders, good pours, tasty food. Quality divey feel. I'll be back
google avatar

Yelp
Friendly staff and food hits the spot. Dim lighting makes it more cozy. Great place if you're looking for an out of the way place.

Yelp
At the risk of creating so much demand that I have to wait for a table, this place is a hidden gem! We sat in the bar and ordered happy hour food. The Calamari and Brussels sprouts and wings were so good that we ordered more of each, there were 5 of us sharing. The only drawback for me was RC cola

Matthew P.

Yelp
Girlfriend ordered the Fried Chicken sandwich with potatoes salad and I ordered the Rubin sandwich with potato salad. My sandwich was OUTSTANDING but the potato salad was a little bland. Girlfriend's sandwich was really, really good! Service was good and the ambiance is very inviting. 100% will be returning, just gonna get fries with my Rubin next time.

Yelp
So finished up a round of golf at Wild Wood. Beautiful course by the way. Then headed down to this restaurant. The food is always very good, and the employees are very friendly but you do need to allocate some time . It can take awhile to get your food. But the being said it's a great place for a meal.

Yelp
I had heard the hype about the fried chicken... And I love me some good fried chicken so I thought I would check it out. I went around 2 PM on a weekday in between the lunch and dinner rush. This place is located just west of Portland in the industrial area. When I entered I saw a large group of people in the bar all sitting at the same table but there was no one in the restaurant. From the front door straight back is the kitchen and part of the restaurant and the kitchen were filled with smoke and it smelled like something was burning. I almost found it comical that nobody was concerned about this...I thought the kitchen may be on fire until I saw a man in the kitchen that didn't seem concerned. I stayed around approximately 10 minutes before anybody showed up. I was just getting ready to leave and the waitress showed up, apologized and told me to sit wherever I like and she would get me some water. She also brought me a menu and I took my drink order for an ice tea. I was the only one seated in the restaurant. My mind was set on fried chicken so I chose the fried chicken breast sandwich which I ordered with tater tot's. I also ordered a side salad for an additional five dollars. Wow I was sitting there waiting I noticed how does the flash and kept things were. There was food on the windowsill as well as spiderwebs in the light above the table was coated in dust. I catsup bottle top was extremely dirty.... underneath the lid and the tip. It didn't look like this place had a thorough cleaning job for a while. While I was waiting the waitress and a cook we're on the deck outside my window smoking... That was attractive. You would think that they would go outback or somewhere where the patrons could not see them. Also the locals and regular started trickling in and heading to the bar. This is definitely a place with a lot of regulars when they get off work for the day. The bar was getting full but the restaurant was empty except for me. It took me approximately 17 minutes to get my order and I did not get my salad ahead of time. The salad was caked in chopped pickled beets with a couple cucumbers and a pile of lettuce. They should've called it a beet salad. The ciabatta bun for the sandwich was amazing... very soft and tasty. That chicken breast was not very large and definitely did not fill the bun. I could tell it was cooked in dirty oil and the coating was burnt around the edges. It was greasy. They were also pickles and raw onion. I ate part of both because I was hungry... But I definitely do not have plans of coming here again and other than it being in the historical building... There really isn't anything else special. Oh and in case you were wondering they no longer serve onion rings or a couple of the other things there are photos of on Yelp.

Yelp
Perfect place to stop on your way to/from Sauvie Island. Outdoor patio and plenty of indoor seating. Freshly made tortilla chips and roasted salsa is a must-order. So delicious! Fish and chips were perfectly crisp. Will be back for drinks, tacos, and more chips & salsa!

Bryan R.

Yelp
One of the top burgers in Portland and we've been going here for years! Hidden gem that my whole family has enjoyed every time we're driving down Hwy 30. Great service - it's always good. Old classic tavern w a section for all ages plus bar next door.

Yelp
A friend invited me to join them for dinner. As I often do when going to a new to me restaurant, I read reviews ahead of time and made sure there would be food items that I could and would like to eat. Having read reviews and knowing that most places are understaffed and overwhelmed, I kept my expectations in check. Was service a tad bit slow? Yeah. Took about an hour after ordering to receive our food. It was middle of the week, around 6:45pm when we ordered. Once the food was delivered, it did not disappoint. I got the nachos without any protein. They were scrumptious and only the very last chip got soft. I call that a win! I was quite impressed. My friend got the pulled pork sandwich and a bowl of chowder. They enjoyed both of them. I think that if people keep their expectations in regards to timely delivery of food to one's table, in check, then you won't be disappointed and you will have a lovely time.

Yelp
Walked in, ordered a plate of tacos, and waited. And waited. And waited. I only get an hour for lunch. Forty minutes passed, and I had to get back to work. No tacos. I won't be back. How could I possibly leave a review for food I never received?

Inez F.

Yelp
We have been going to the Lighthouse for years! But tonight will be are last time. Waited forever for our food finally came cold. I also asked for my burger to be cooked well done. Apparently she didn't hear me or the cook didn't care. Because it was medium rare! Got done eating waited forever for our bill finally got it! I could understand if it was extremely busy but it wasn't the problem we noticed was the waitresses & bar tenders standing around talking.

Linda K.

Yelp
House made smoked turkey sandwich is my favorite sandwich in the area. The staff is really friendly and the value is good. Fell in love with this place on my first visit and I've never been disappointed.
google avatar

Catherine D.

Yelp
Met a bunch of people there for breakfast! Food was forgettable but the historic bank/nautical bar ambiance, no wait time, ample space, and good service made it the perfect out-of-the-way spot to catch up with friends. (I did enjoy my waffle and sausage but the Brussels are not a good choice)
google avatar

Mike R.

Yelp
Interesting to see such mixed reviews. All I can base it on is our experience this evening. Admittedly I was a little nervous having never been here before. After 15 minutes we decided we have to come back, and nothing the rest of the evening changed our mind. Admittedly they inadvertently dropped an order of fries on the table as soon as we sat down. Hungry piggly me assumes that's there 'enjoy while you decide' hook. Wrong. However the fries were great. Hot, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. In my embarrassment I told them to put them on my bill but they refused. My wife and I shared the Brussels sprouts and fish and chips. I'm an old dude, and have loved Brussels sprouts since I was a kid (weird kid then huh?) so much longer than the last 10-15 years where they've become trendy. Seriously the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had. Ever. Soy, ginger, candied Walnuts .... bring me more! Fish was lightly battered, hot, well cooked, white and flakey. What could be better? And the chips, we'll, guess I've already floated over those above. However. I have to comment on how hard everyone there was working. Never standing still, every trip was delivering, retrieving, filling, making and serving. You better be treating them well Lighthouse owner or someone is going to take them from you!!!! Thank you for such a great experience and we'll see you again!!!!

Yelp
This place was fantastic! The first sign was the active smoker in the parking lot. Our server was fabulous- friendly, entertaining, and appropriately attentive. My turkey sandwich was utterly delicious! Thick slices of house smoked turkey with a thin edge of the smoked crust. Plus bacon, shredded lettuce, good tomatoes, and a fun aioli. My greyhound was served in a pint class and clearly a double pour. All for $19+tip. My pal seemed to really enjoy huevos rancheros (w black beans on a crispy tortilla). Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Alana R.

Yelp
This place was good! Kind of an out of the way place but a perfect port in the storm for something to eat on a rainy night. The customer service was excellent. The drinks were tasty and the food was better than average for bar fare. We ordered the Popeyes coated wings (delish) and a burger. Both tasty. Loved the feel of the place with its weathered wood interior. Will return and recommend!
google avatar

Christina S.

Yelp
The smoked turkey sandwich was very good! My husband had Grandma's tacos, and they were surprisingly good! Service was terribly slow from our server, but the bus boy and bartender graciously picked up the slack. This place is a hidden gem.
google avatar

AE V.

Yelp
I take my 6 year old here for burgers and fries after all of our duck hunts on Sauvies. On our last day this year he told me that the best part of duck hunting was going to the Lighthouse afterward.... I totally get it. Love this place. BTW most of the things people complain about on here amounts to pretentious trivialry. Trying to up their Yelp cred.
google avatar

Whitney R.

Yelp
Stopped by on the way for a family day hike and mistakenly looked only at the overall rating for this location and not the ratings in the last year and a half. The service was non existent. The tables were not clean, and the sodas were completely flat. The tufo and turkey sandwiches were okay but I would not recommend due to the horrible undertstaffing
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
Service was horrible. Took over an hour to get our food. Someone walked up to our table and asked if we wanted our check and we hadn't even gotten our food yet. The waitress never checked in on us, never brought things we requested when food was finally delivered, the food was cold, fries nachos were horrible. Main dishes were barely edible. At the end, I went to cash out a win slip from the lottery machines and she shorted me 10¢ and didn't say anything. I asked moments later about the 10¢ by saying "excuse me, it is short 10¢." She replied with an attitude, "well, if you want, I can give you 10 pennies." Will not be back. Do not recommend.
google avatar

Adriana A.

Yelp
I'm leaving 5 stars because of Sharon. My husband and I are in the service indistry and saw how much she hustled. She was running that FOH by herself. And she did great!
google avatar

Mary C.

Yelp
Yesterday my friend and I went to the Lighthouse Restaurant for a bite and drinks. The server was at the register and we asked her if we could take one of the tables outside. It had shaded already which made the tables nice. The server brought us menus and waters. We glanced at the menus. My friend got the ahi tuna sandwich and I got the nachos. The server brought us our drinks and then food shortly after. The fries were very stale. When my friend informed the server she was very kind and offered to replace them. My friend politely declined. My nachos were not good. The cheese is a bad idea. It is a queso type that tastes very plasticity. I recommend they do regular good old trusty cheese! If it weren't for the server it would have been three stars she was amazing and kind. I will be back again for the service and drinks.
google avatar

Brooklyn R.

Yelp
The food we ate was pretty decent, it was hot and ready but service was a little slow. The people were nice though

Gayla S.

Yelp
Food super good. Kinda had weird service... couldn't get a 2nd beverage or even a glass of water. Had to go out to my car for my own water bottle. Think it was server confusion?? Had to hunt down our own bill to pay. Odd communications. Food great though.

Bill O.

Yelp
Had a great dinner and over all dinner/evening at the light house. We normal do not frequent this restaurant because of the service. Smitty was a delight and took great care of us. We will be back.

Ron L.

Yelp
Top notch food...top notch service. This has quickly become one of my favorite spots to frequent!

Yelp
After being in St. Johns and starting my lunch crawl and deciding where to go first, I saw the ratings here and had to check it out. Walking in was what you would expect from a Tavern type atmosphere, neighborhood people, day drinkers and such. But after pursing around the restaurant, what I didn't expect was the cool decor and how nice it was. I found a table back by the windows and after looking at the menu and knowing I had a couple of more stops to make I choose the Calamari and confirming with the bartender on how good it was. It was a 5 star dish. Fresh tasting calamari, not to chewy, light breaded and fried to perfection. Call me surprised. The owner/chef has taken the food to another level here. Great service, strong drinks, great food and atmosphere. It gets my blessing and I'll be more frequent diner here.

Yelp
Normally I like to try a place more then once before leaving a review, but we had an odd experience when we visited the restaurant last Monday, so I thought I should add it on. I will try it again (the menu and food photos look great) next time we head this way so I can hopefully change the review. We showed up to eat lunch (around 12:30pm) and could not see any staff working on the restaurant side. After about 4-5 minutes, I walked to the bar side and didn't see any staff working there either. Almost all the tables were full on both sides. When I did see one (the lady we saw smoking outside on our way in) she said she was the only one working both sides that day and to find a seat and she would bring us water. We found some seats and started studying the menu when we realized that no one we passed on our way to our table had their food yet. We were starving, so we ended up just leaving. She did show up with the waters, just as we were getting up to go. I hate to just leave, but there were 10+ tables with no food and our little kids weren't going to last a long wait. I totally understand that being short staffed happens and I feel bad for her. It just would have been nice for them to put up a note about longer then normal waits or to seat ourselves. Again, we'll try again another time!
google avatar

Chris E.

Yelp
We recently had a weekend breakfast here and it was great. Comfortable, friendly service, well-made cocktails, full breakfast menu with some interesting choices. The Huevos Rancheros and Breakfast Tacos were especially good. Good pricing. Easy parking. We'll go back again.
google avatar

Rick S.

Yelp
Great food and good beer selection. The service is to be desired. I try to be forgiven during COVID times. I have been here 5+ times this year and there is alway some issue with the service. We have been over charged and forgotten about. The wait staff are all friendly lovable creatures , but terrible at service. We had a wait staff come take our order, the come back 5 min later and ask us if we are ready to order!?!?!
google avatar

Lilly B.

Yelp
Ugh, I came here once a couple of years ago and I don't remember an issue with service but my food came with a long blonde hair in it. I just calmly pointed it out to the bartender, paid my bill and swore I'd never return. Well, fast forward to yesterday...my husband really wanted to try it again so I hesitantly agreed. Once again, I was disappointed with The Lighthouse. I met my husband there, he was sitting at the bar and already had a beer. I sat down and was immediately acknowledged but it took her 15 minutes to take my drink order. After another 10 minutes, I finally got my drink. We wanted to order food but guess what? 20 more minutes for someone to take our food order. We were there for probably a little over 2 hours waiting for drinks and food. While we were patiently waiting, we noticed how dirty everything was. The mats in the cooler that glasses are sitting on are absolutely disgusting. The service was horrible, food was mediocre and the place is dirty. I'll for sure never go back!

Yelp
Disclaimer: I don't typically write reviews but feel compelled to write one after my visit tonight. We arrived after 8pm after the dinner rush and decided to sit on the bar side. We seated ourselves and were greeted right away with menus and waters. We were told our server would be with us shortly. Our server (who was the bar tender) arrived quickly and took our drink & food orders. 15 minutes later my boyfriend went up to the bar to ask our server about his beer. He was told she would be right with him. 30 minutes later, no drinks and no food. Meanwhile, the tables around us sat down, ordered & received their drinks. 60 minutes into our visit we debated, not wanting to be rude and just walk out, we walked up to the bar to notify the bar assistant that got us our menus at the beginning of the night. She apologized but it doesn't make up for the hour wait. Perhaps think twice before trying this place...

Yelp
We've gone to the Lighthouse several times and was happy with it. Went today and...not so happy. The tables were dirty, we changed tables and the 2nd one was dirty as well. The server was new or acted like he was. I ordered the turkey, bacon and avocado club which arrived on a sub roll with no avocado. Mu husband ordered a breakfast bowl with eggs over easy on biscuits covered in gravy. The eggs were over done and it was fairly unappetizing. In addition there was a stream of profanities coming from the kitchen accompanied by heavy metal which was very loud. We saw our server once during the meal and had to search him down for our check. The menu has changed with limited selections. Sorry lighthouse...not coming back.
