9 Affordable Private Island Resorts Around the World

"Likuri Island is a dreamy island off Fiji's main coast. It is steeped in local history and offers guests an array of cultural activities such as medicine plant tours, Fijian weaving and cooking classes, and tours of an ancient pottery site nearby. Of course, you still get to enjoy those notoriously beautiful Fijian beaches and clear waters and all the fun activities that come with them, like surfing, snorkeling, swimming, and stand-up paddleboarding. The island has 23 bures, or Fijian bungalows, with private bathrooms, nestled among the lush greenery just steps away from the beach. A buffet-style restaurant serves a variety of dishes prepared with fresh, organic produce, while the island's beach bar offers a selection of local beer, wine, cocktails, and gorgeous ocean views. Nightly rates from $50, likurifiji.com" - Travel + Leisure Editors

Just spent 9 nights al Likuri Island resort. Beautiful little island with a pristine beach. Loads of activities from snorkeling to crab cooking to nightly entertainment. The staff are outstanding, always smiling, helpful and the service is impeccable. It is an extremely well run resort that doesn't break the budget. The rooms are clean and well maintained. It has such a lovely atmosphere and I would highly recommend it. We will definitely go back

Our stay at Likuri Island Resort was nothing short of magical. The food was absolutely delicious, with every meal full of flavour and freshness. The cultural performances were breathtaking – the dancers were incredible and gave us such a special glimpse into the richness of Fijian tradition. Swimming in the crystal-clear island waters was pure bliss, like stepping into paradise itself. What truly made the experience unforgettable, though, was the hospitality – warm, genuine, and beautifully heartfelt. Likuri Island is a place that leaves you feeling enriched, relaxed, and already dreaming of returning. Margarita the island boss lady went above and beyond to make sure everyone was well looked after adding a very personal touch to an incredibly beautiful holiday!

CAUTION !! We booked the last two days of our holiday at this island though booking.com the photos made it look like a paradise island where you could snorkel and swim off the beach across coral reefs and relax in peace. This is not the case as soon as we saw the island on approach we noticed it was a mud flat bar in the middle of the estuary, surrounded by mud flats in practically all directions apart from the side where the boat pulls in, the other side you could actually walk back to the main land if you had Wellington boots . The water is murky brackish river water and full of sea grass and probably bull sharks not the sort of water you want to swim in, the sand was silty and grubby. When we checked in we were told we needed to pay another $870 for the transfers and compulsory food package (which we knew nothing about as you have to scroll down and click a conveniently hidden drop down box on booking .com) after I picked my jaw up we decided to cut our losses not ruin our holiday and get the next boat off that swamp island and went back to our original hotel on Natadola beach what’s half the price and infinitely better. on the way back to natadola beach the cab driver told up he’s heard only bad stuff about the island with power constantly keep going off and its mainly for back packers with the shows and day trippers turning up all day.. :(

We had an amazing time at Likuri Island Resort! The staff were super friendly and made us feel so welcome. The beach was beautiful, and our bure was really comfy. We loved kayaking, snorkelling, and paddle boarding — such a fun way to enjoy the stunning surroundings. It was a bit disappointing that the Hobie Cat sailing was out of action, but it didn't spoil the trip. We’d definitely stay here again if we get the chance. Highly recommend!

Just returned from six nights and loved every second of it. The staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating. We had one of the fancier air-conditioned bures and it was great. The activities are going on every day, generally free and lots of fun. The shows happen roughly every second day and are very very good, including traditional dancing, fire dancing, and machete tricks! They even still performed on the one day it poured with rain. Canoes, kayaks etc are free to use as well. The buffet provided is excellent and healthy enough to keep the travelling tummy happy. We had the "half board" (breakfast and dinner only) and it was plenty of food with the occasional extra bowl of fries.

My favourite place on earth. The pictures online do not do it justice, the island is so so beautiful and everyone that works there is incredible. I loved the food, my room, the tours, everything was amazing! Make sure you get a massage. I will be back as soon as possible!!!! Also the boat ride there and back is stunning.

We booked our stay for 10 days and 9 nights, and when it was all said and done, we didn’t want to leave. From the moment we arrived, Likuri stole our hearts. The journey started with a 30-minute boat ride, and as soon as the island came into view, it absolutely took our breath away. We were welcomed with music, singing, and the warmest smiles—it instantly set the tone for the days ahead. Likuri has such a laid-back and genuine feel. Every day there were authentic cultural and island activities to enjoy: basket weaving, cultural dances, volleyball, kayaking, crab and coconut tasting, nature walks, and more. We especially loved learning about the native trees and herbal remedies during the nature walk, and the fact that half of the island is still undeveloped—it gave everything a truly natural, untouched vibe. Some days we joined the activities, and other days we simply relaxed under the beach cabanas or treated ourselves to a couples massage at the island spa. Snorkeling was one of the highlights of our trip. The reef surrounding Likuri is alive with vibrant marine life and stunning coral formations. Swimming through the crystal-clear water and watching schools of colorful fish pass by was absolutely magical. It felt like stepping into an underwater paradise! Not to mention how great the temperature of the water is! The evenings were just as special. The night shows were incredible—fire walking, machete and fire dancing, and traditional performances that left us completely mesmerized. I also celebrated my birthday here, and the staff surprised me by singing and bringing out a cake. It was such a thoughtful and memorable gesture that I’ll never forget. We stayed in a Family Bure, which had more than enough space for us and a lovely deck where we enjoyed tea most mornings with Tuesday, the island cat, keeping us company. We slept like babies every night thanks to the comfort and the peaceful sounds of the island. Food on the island was another highlight. The Lovo meals were an absolute treat, and we couldn’t get enough of the fresh flavors. The fish in coconut milk and the baked potatoes were some of our favorites, and we could taste the care and effort put into every dish. What truly sets Likuri apart, though, is the staff. They went above and beyond to make our stay unforgettable. We want to give special thanks to King Julian, Shaun, Fiu, Tuks, Ana, and Seru for elevating our experience in the most positive way. We are so grateful to each and every one of you! To Avi and the rest of the kitchen staff—thank you for the freshest, best-tasting meals and all your hard work feeding us and the rest of the island guests. And to Ruci and the housekeeping team—thank you for keeping our bure spotless and cozy every day. Leaving was bittersweet, but the comfort comes from knowing this won’t be goodbye for long—we’re already planning to return for an even longer stay. Until then, Bula Vinaka, Likuri family!

We loved our time at Likuri Island resort. It was beautiful and very relaxed. If you wanted to get involved, there were lots of activities or you could always find solitude on a lounger or hammock. The staff were impressive - constantly busy but always a friendly Bula and a chat. Highly recommend!
