I really wanted to give this place multiple tries before I wrote this review. Not having many coffee shops/cafes in Burke, I really want this place to thrive. To start, you are always greeted by a friendly staff upon entering the cafe.
First time here, I ordered the Original Cheesesteak with fries, in and out in about 15mins. Over the course of a year, I stopped in for coffee or a matcha latte. The last time, I did a mobile order, it was on a Saturday 1225pm, for pick up at 1235pm. Arrived at 1245p and did not receive my order until 103pm. Just shows the lunch rush can get busy here, as all the interior seats were occupied.
The cheesesteak is juicy and flavorful. Very minimal grease absorbed into the sub roll. The crinkle cut fries are a no for me. Both times, they were over-fried. Cheesesteak 8/10, Fries 2/10.
The Mexi-Cali bowl was recommended by a friend and described as "A-MAZ-ING" but I was not impressed. Start off with a bowl of white rice, then top it with blanched spinach and can mushrooms, a quarter of an avocado, grilled peppers and onions, chicken, barely noticeable pieces of shredded bacon, fried egg, and shredded cheddar to top it off. The water from the spinach and mushroom seeped down into the rice.
The rice bowl gets 5.5/10 as I would like to see this dish be prepared with fresh mushrooms (not from the can), freshly grilled peppers and onions (where it still has its texture), at least half an avocado, and a sunny-side or over easy egg (not overly fried). The chipotle aioli that comes with the Mexi-Cali bowl is definitely a 11/10 though.
I'll still frequent for the coffee and matcha latte. Overall 4/5 and hope to return to give it an updated 5/5 some day.
