14 New D.C. Coffee Shops | Eater DC

"The latest spot from Bayou Bakery’s Chef David Guas serves Counter Culture coffee in the Darcy Hotel. Zagat recommends the house-kegged, flash-brewed nitro iced coffee as a must order. It’s also worth taking advantage of any of the food on offer, including Guas’ muffulettas, gumbo, and pimento cheese." - Rebecca Gale

Lil Cow Cafe Bistro, located in Rolling Valley Shopping Center in Burke, offers a cozy, farmhouse-like atmosphere with large windows that flood the cafe with sunlight. It serves fresh, high-quality food, especially sandwiches, with a diverse menu, friendly staff, and charming fall decorations. We loved the large logo in the center. The coffee, brewed with La Colombe beans, was excellent—robust and not watered down. We were delighted to find perfect sandwiches this morning. You can choose your bread from Whole Wheat, Soft White, Wrap, Sourdough, or Ciabatta. We highly recommend: 1. Southwest Wrap, containing grilled chicken, avocado, spinach, tomatoes, onions, provolone cheese, and Chipotle Aioli. All ingredients were fresh, tasty, and the sauce complemented everything nicely. 2. Gourmet Bacon Chicken Cheesesteak sandwich, made with grilled chicken breast, crispy bacon, and cheese on an Italian Hoagie roll, and served with French fries. The ingredients were fresh, the sauce excellent, and the bread light and not dense, resulting in a satisfying sandwich.

1st visit to this local cafe & we enjoyed every minute! Warm welcome by the young lady on the morning shift and staff. GREAT menu options & fun adorable harvest decor. Cafe had a steady stream of visitors & noticed the food service was quick. We had the turkey club, prime rib bacon & turkey cranberry chutney sandwiches and they were fabulous! Mocha & house coffee was tasty. We highly recommend & are happy we found a local family cafe to support! See you again soon 😄

Google
Perfect breakfast spot! The food is fresh, tasty, and comes out quickly — exactly what you need to start the day. It’s a great place to grab a bite before heading into work at 11. Friendly service and good portions make it an easy favorite for mornings.

Google
Roasts La Colombe coffee, which disappoints for a place that's boutique, especially that said "specialty coffee" outside. Still, friendly staff and smooth ordering process. Coffee is pretty good. Inside feel is farmhouse-like, which is a feel they're going for. Interesting sandwiches on menu.

Google
Great food. I had the avocado melt, blue raspberry lemonade, and vanilla latte. They were all spectacular. The customer service was outstanding. There was even a miscommunication error with the order, and they fixed it quickly!

Google
Best coffee in town. Excellent service and the food is outstanding. This place never misses. Lil Cow always hits.

Cute and calm place to relax, chat, or study. I had the butterscotch latte and it was decent. Also, the barista brought my drink to me!

Google
Found this place on "breakfast places nearby" on the Yelp app. It's located in the Rolling Rd shopping center near LIDL. Off the bat, cute interior and vibes. Cashier was friendly and helped me make some decisions for the order by letting me know which ones were more popular. We ended up getting the ham, egg, and cheese breakfast burrito and the southwest sandwich on ciabatta. Although, it took a bit of time to get our food- once we got it, it was delicious! I loved how the freshness of the veggies elevated the sandwich and wrap. We also got the peach mint lemonade- which was very refreshing. Glad we got a chance to check this place out and excited to come back and try some other items.

Yelp
Hands down the best coffee in Burke. I come here weekly for the iced vanilla latte or iced caramel macchiato . It's strong and perfectly sweetened. The staff is incredible and service is fast. They always greet you with a smile. I also had the cow rib eye cheesesteak which was huge and flavorful .

Yelp
Updated Review: Came back with some friends. I enjoyed the Mexi Cali Bowl and White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha. The Mexi Cali bowl was very filling (enough for two meals). My friend was a little disappointed because she got the southwest sandwich on sourdough bread- she wanted to sub the meat with turkey but they said they don't sub things for sandwiches. I still enjoyed my food and would still come back again. Highly recommend checking it out!

Yelp
Vibes | Options | Pumpkin Chai Vibes: This spot has an amazing atmosphere--bright, cozy, and modern. The visuals are clean and inviting, making it a great place whether you're grabbing a quick bite, catching up with friends, or settling in to get some work done. There is no music, and the noise level is low. The seating is plentiful, and the overall vibe is relaxed yet lively. It's the kind of place where you could easily lose track of time--in the best way. Options: The menu strikes an excellent balance between traditional coffee shop favorites and more substantial options. You'll find all the usual pastries, teas, and espresso drinks, but they also offer a surprising variety of lunch and breakfast items. The wraps and sandwiches are fresh and flavorful, and the warm snacks are perfect if you're looking for something light but satisfying. It's nice to see a café that caters equally well to both coffee enthusiasts and people looking for a quick meal. Pumpkin Chai: I tried the Pumpkin Chai Latte, and it was outstanding--rich, aromatic, and perfectly spiced. The pumpkin flavor came through beautifully without being overpowering, and the drink struck that perfect balance between sweet and savory--definitely one of the best seasonal drinks I've had in a while. Pro Tips: - They offer a 10% military discount, which is a nice touch. - Plenty of parking is available in the complex, so no need to stress about finding a spot.

Yelp
3.5 stars TL;DR: Would come for coffee, but would skip the food Made a quick stop for some coffee and breakfast. The interior was very cute, and there is plenty of seating. FOOD: ~Iced Americano (4/5): Solid ~Morning burrito (3/5): Had good flavor, but it is VERY small especially for $10+ and does not come with any sides. ~Cow Ribeye (3/5): Meat was most like ground beef than chopped steak. The gochujang flavor was a little too strong. The bread was untoasted, so it was difficult to eat/got soggy quickly ~Fries (3/5): Came with the cow ribeye. They were okay, but under seasoned. Would come back here for a coffee pitstop if I am in the area.

Yelp
Came in for takeout on a Wednesday afternoon after seeing other Yelp reviews. Smallish dining area with about 10 small tables (one high-top). My mushroom cheesesteak was really tasty- added the garlic sauce ($1 extra). Sandwich came with fries and reasonably priced. I grabbed a bag of deli chips because I didn't read the sign saying fries were included I'd come here again for the sub and to try a frappe.

Yelp
Wonderful little coffee shop and cafe in Burke. There is indoor seating and plenty of parking. It's always nice supporting local coffee shops and cafes.

Yelp
I found this place after searching through cafes near me. I was surprised that I've never heard or seen of this place! The inside was really spacious and homey. It had a good amount of seating and cute details on the walls that help the place stand out. I ordered the strawberry matcha for me and a strawberry lemonade for my mom and two muffins, lemon and blueberry. The muffins were really moist and fluffy! They weren't overly sweet and the lemon one had a strong flavor. The blueberry muffin didn't have that strong of a taste as the blueberries were all at the bottom of the muffin. The matcha was really good, the strawberry tasted very natural and not processed. The strawberry lemonade on the other hand was a bit too sour for my liking. I cant wait to come back and try their other items!

Yelp
Good food at a reasonable price. Everyone in our party enjoyed the food. We have been there twice and plan to go back again soon.
google avatar

Alex B.

Yelp
Food and drink was great. Peach lemonade that was recommended was excellent and the cheesesteak was on point. Christmas decorations made everything even better.
google avatar

Tim L.

Yelp
I tried the Turkey Club and it was one of the best sandwiches I've had in awhile. The sourdough bread with the avocado and the crisp lettuce really balanced well with the turkey. I'll definitely order it again the next time I'm in the area.
google avatar

Melanie J.

Yelp
Came here for a quick coffee and snack to grab! Really sweet workers that delivered great service! The coffee was not overly sweet in flavor, it was just right and their coffee cake muffin hit the spot after running errands all day. Great space for brunch or to hang out with friends.

Yelp
Hair in sandwich. ...and this is not the first time I've had an issue with their sandwiches but it is the first time I've called for a refund, as I was too far away, at the time, to return. Looks like I'm going to have to drive out of my way another 25 minutes to get $10 refund b/c they won't do it over the phone and need the sandwhich in front of them. They just lost a regular.
google avatar

Yelp
I had the Original Ribeye Cheesesteak. *Chef's kiss* Very flavorful and satisfying. I'll be back to try more of the menu.
google avatar

Jay D.

Yelp
Really delicious, good quality Philly cheesesteak. I got the original with onions and mayo. I thought I also asked for hot peppers but I didn't really taste anything spicy in my sandwich so maybe I forgot to order them. The meat was great quality, highly recommend this place and will try again. It's not greasy like the cheesesteaks in Philly. I was sad that they don't have whiz but that's fine by me. I also really liked the fries that came with it. The lavender latte was pretty ok. Not the best I've had but I can't wait to try more of their drinks. There's a great variety to choose from. My mom got a BLT on white bread, the bacon was nice and crispy the way she likes it. The restaurant was nice and clean. I did take out so that's all I could gather from walking in and out.
google avatar

Yelp
Great avocado melt, even better chai latte! Very cute cafe near my house that's become a regular for easy eats!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a favorite casual breakfast/lunch place. They have sandwiches, cheesesteaks and breakfast burritos. My favorite items to order here are their cheesesteaks! The service is quick - you order at the front and they bring the meal to your table. There aren't too many tables, but typically people are in and out so it isnt much of a wait.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this place multiple tries before I wrote this review. Not having many coffee shops/cafes in Burke, I really want this place to thrive. To start, you are always greeted by a friendly staff upon entering the cafe. First time here, I ordered the Original Cheesesteak with fries, in and out in about 15mins. Over the course of a year, I stopped in for coffee or a matcha latte. The last time, I did a mobile order, it was on a Saturday 1225pm, for pick up at 1235pm. Arrived at 1245p and did not receive my order until 103pm. Just shows the lunch rush can get busy here, as all the interior seats were occupied. The cheesesteak is juicy and flavorful. Very minimal grease absorbed into the sub roll. The crinkle cut fries are a no for me. Both times, they were over-fried. Cheesesteak 8/10, Fries 2/10. The Mexi-Cali bowl was recommended by a friend and described as "A-MAZ-ING" but I was not impressed. Start off with a bowl of white rice, then top it with blanched spinach and can mushrooms, a quarter of an avocado, grilled peppers and onions, chicken, barely noticeable pieces of shredded bacon, fried egg, and shredded cheddar to top it off. The water from the spinach and mushroom seeped down into the rice. The rice bowl gets 5.5/10 as I would like to see this dish be prepared with fresh mushrooms (not from the can), freshly grilled peppers and onions (where it still has its texture), at least half an avocado, and a sunny-side or over easy egg (not overly fried). The chipotle aioli that comes with the Mexi-Cali bowl is definitely a 11/10 though. I'll still frequent for the coffee and matcha latte. Overall 4/5 and hope to return to give it an updated 5/5 some day.

Yelp
I visited Lil Cow Cafe Bistro for lunch with my daughters and mother in law. We had coffee and a strawberries and cream frappe and a vanilla frappe to drink, chicken tenders and fries, a club sandwich on sourdough and a southwest on a wrap. First of all, this place is super cute and the staff are helpful. The sandwiches were really delicious. We both really enjoyed them. The chicken tenders and fries were meh, but what do you expect at a sandwich place!
google avatar

Yelp
3.5/5 Inside: They need better AC. It was scorching hot but for some reason it was very humid and sticky inside. I couldn't really stay there longer than an hour (came here to do work but couldn't concentrate with the heat) Food: I ordered the avocado melt. It was less than 10 dollars for the sandwich but it was quite small with thin slices of avocado- which they should be a little more generous of. The arugula took over the sandwich because of the lack of avocado in the AVOCADO sandwich :/ Coffee: 5/5 loved their coffee! We just moved around the area so I'm glad I found a reliable place for a cup of coffee. Will be coming back for my dose of caffeine but I don't plan on using their space.
google avatar

Andrew L.

Yelp
Little how has some very nice hot and cold sandwiches. No burgers. But I like the ow Ribeye Cheeseteak or the Chipolte Ribeye Cheesesteak sandwiches. The sayrcex are tangy! I order these with fries and an iced tea. There are weekend breakfast sandwiches and coffee and tea drinks that I have not tried.
google avatar

Savannah L.

Yelp
LIL COW ROCKS I am so obsessed with this place. This is silly I don't even like coffee, but their LEMONADE IS EVERYTHING. The seasonal ones currently are blueberry and lavender. I would come here every single day just for a lemonade. The staff are really nice too. And I'm obsessed with their Christmas decorations.
google avatar

CT P.

Yelp
Seems like this place has changed. In the beginning- their Matcha Lattes were perfect. I went a couple days ago, same latte they used real dairy! I was nauseous with a whiff, I told them to remake it without dairy. And they were rude.
google avatar

RightCoast 1.

Yelp
Seriously some of the best coffee in the area. Service behind the counter is friendly, great vibe, great food (sandwiches, yummy baked goods). But seriously. This coffee? So good.
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Nice lunch spot that punches above its weight for a strip mall shop. The cheese steaks are as good as advertised in the other reviews. The Dirty Chai Latte was a pleasant surprise and apparently a specialty. Seating was plentiful enough to easily find a table at lunchtime, and the solid wood tables and fun decor touches gave it a comfortable bistro vibe. We'll be back. Next time we gotta try those scones!
google avatar

Mark M.

Yelp
Nice menu choices for casual meals. Comfortable environment. Great place to meet with friends.
google avatar

Yelp
Lil Cow's food has been consistently good in the past 2 years. Ditto with the coffee. The staff is friendly, the place is clean, and I appreciate that in a sea of boring mediocre it's a lil gem that is a nice place for an afternoon break.

Larry R.

Yelp
We usually like to go here and have a relaxing cup of Lavender coffee and a light dinner. But tonight first their coffee machine was broken. The at exactly 8pm the waitress/ order taker came up to us and told us we had to leave as they were closing, even though we were not quite finished with our meal. I have worked in service for over 30 years and you never tell a customer they have to leave. You apologize and then say we are closing. Someone needs to work with the staff here and teach them how to treat customers.

Jeremy S.

Yelp
I ordered a crispy chicken sandwich to go, found out when I got home that only half the sandwich had chicken in it and the other was literally just bread and vegetables. When I came back and complained the owners looked at this sandwich and retorted this was the right amount of chicken. They remade the sandwich but insisted I was wrong to bring it back to redo because they usually out the same amount of chicken on these, even though I've ordered the same sandwich a few times before and it had a normal amount of protein in it (so they lied). Not a good experience.

Yelp
I'm a fan of Lil Cow Cafe Bistro! This cute little Korean-owned cafe serves up some great eats and delicious coffee! Just note that breakfast options are only served on the weekends, and their main menu (artisan sandwiches and subs) isn't served until 11 AM. I ordered: +the Cow Rib Eye Cheesesteak - rib eye steak cooked perfectly, dressed generously with a homemade Asian party sauce, served on an Italian hoagie roll with a side of fries; the sauce reminded me of a jaeyook sauce (the sweet/spicy marinade sauce on pork); it definitely had a kick, but this was so finger-licking good! Definitely a messier type of eats! The fries were dropped fresh and were hot & crispy; the portion was more on the smaller end, but still filling +the White Chocolate Mocha Latte - served extra hot, this was creamy and strong, just the way I like it! +an iced half and half - brewed fresh, this was a great combination of both tea and lemonade; not too sweet, but super refreshing! I'd love to try the rest of their cheesesteaks and their sammies the next time! I love the decor of the shop - it's so bright, cheery, clean, and inviting. The staff are very sweet and welcoming, too! There are a handful of seating inside, and this place does get packed. Plenty of parking in the shared plaza lot. +great coffee! +Cow Rib Eye Cheesesteak +friendly staff +parking in shared plaza lot
google avatar

Veronica S.

Yelp
So far best coffee shop around here, coffee is always tasty and hot! Service- the employees are always friendly! Ambiance- I try to go here during the week as in the weekends sometimes is a bit of chaos.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
Another great suggestion from Yelp. In the area for the day and looking for a place for a quick meal. Yelp suggested the Lil Cow Cafe Bistro and hit the nail on the head. The Chipotle Rib Eye Cheesesteak might be the best sub I've eaten in thirty years...it might be the best I've EVER eaten. The rib eye was so amazingly tender and tasty and the combination with the chipotle aioli was perfection. I can't imagine I'll ever order anything else. The protein bowl salad was also excellent (but was mysteriously missing the avocado). The staff (perhaps the owner...not sure) was suuuuper nice and attentive. We have to come back to Burke every week or so and I plan to swim by LCCB every-single-time!
google avatar

Ron H.

Yelp
I love this place. We come here as a special "made it through the week" treat on Friday mornings. I really love the avocado bacon burrito and go between an americano and chai latte to drink. Service is always terrific, portions are great, the price is right and I've yet to have an order that was less than delicious.
google avatar

D C.

Yelp
Ordered a couple steak sandwiches and salads. Not much substance in both items. Skimpy on the steak you are better off at a Jersey Mikes
google avatar

Mariella M.

Yelp
Love this place! Their steak and cheese is the Bomb Diggity!! I love their lattes and cappuccinos. I have never eaten inside just ordered for pick up. The inside looks clean and I see people sometimes there on their laptops working. The service has always been great for take out. The food has always come out correctly and hot and fresh. Definitely recommend them ! Stop by , for a quick lunch, you won't regret it

Austin T.

Yelp
Really good breakfast burrito, sort of different than what I was expecting but loved it. Will be back. Local business too it seems like!
google avatar

Abigail D.

Yelp
I usually get the strawberry matcha or the dirty chai, both are great options when going here. I love this little cafe and the atmosphere. Also very great service!
google avatar

E M.

Yelp
Very nice place for a quick brunch meal on Sunday mid morning. Chicken cheesesteak was great!
google avatar

Jasmine J.

Yelp
I love a good spot to get a good unique latte. I tried the strawberry Matcha so good, if you like sweet drinks you would really like this. The ambience was very clean and spacious a great place to get a quick bite or do some teleworking. The service was also good pretty normal.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
This cute lil cafe bistro is tucked away in a corner next to Sakura. It's nice and clean inside, ordering is easy, and you can order through your phone scanning their QR code. I got the protein bowl salad and I highly recommend it! Everything in it was fresh and the chicken was hot and tender. It came out pretty fast and they even brought it out to me at the table I was sitting at. Awesome customer service.

Franken S.

Yelp
Look, I don't usually review food places good, bad, or average....but I HAVE to make an exception here. I've eaten here three times and all three times have positively beat my expectations. This time it was the MexiCali bowl. I ordered it with no Veggies and got the sauce on the side with an extra sauce for $0.75. The extra sauce was needed to coat all of the rice with that saucy goodness, but I cannot express enough just how good and fresh all the elements come together and how good of a lunch it was. If you have been here and are on the fence, go.
google avatar

Alex Renato L.

Yelp
Had the Burke Sandwich , WOW! First time coming here nice little spot with delicious food.
google avatar

Nora A.

Yelp
After seeing all the positive yelp reviews, I've been wanting to try this place for a while! The interior is super cute and cozy, but honestly the food was not memorable enough to go back. We had a take out order and the sandwiches were on the smaller side, as was the portion of 'complimentary' fries. I tried the chicken cheesesteak and felt they skimped on the protein, so it was not good value when compared to other cheesesteaks in the immediate area. Furthermore, the staff could not be bothered to greet us in any way at all. Maybe dining in is the way to go here but did not find any need to return...meh!

Claudis R.

Yelp
Dirty ice latte is delicious and the sandwich are just in point! Love this place! The bad thing they just serve breakfast after 11 am!!
google avatar

Catherine C.

Yelp
Cute little place. Food is ok. It is fresh. Dine-in is single use containers and plastic silverware. Service is ok. Order at the counter and someone drops off your food in the takeaway containers at your table.
google avatar

Fobby N.

Yelp
Freshest sandwich I've ever had! I had the Turkey Cranberry Chutney sandwich and it was so good! Great balance of taste and perfect toasted sourdough bread. Will be back.
google avatar

Kyunghee K.

Yelp
They seem newly opened and the space is very clean and neat. I had the mushroom rib eye and oat latte-- it was such an addictive sub i've ever had in town. The layers of fresh mushroom & tender beef with melted cheese are the perfect combination to taste! They use La Colombe beans for coffee, you know that's much richer than Starbucks, feels like New Yorkers. (-; Their avocado & arugula croissants was just the right one for your breakfast. I'm super excited to find this place! I love the chipotle sauce as well. Highly recommend it and love to revisit tomorrow! (-; One thing i wish for them is to have more tables/seats to embrace more people- sometimes there is a waiting line and it gets crowded inside because of people standing.
google avatar

Rebecca A.

Yelp
Cute vibe in there, nice selection of food including a delicious Asian style Philly cheesesteak that was delicious!! The fries were nicely salted but a little overdone, overall I rate this a 9/10! So good!!!

Joey C.

Yelp
They make the best breakfast burritos, I would for sure recommend this place for quick breakfast spot
