16 Essential Bars and Restaurants in Chattanooga, Tennessee

"No, you didn't fall asleep and wake up in the intro of The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, but that’s exactly the nostalgic swagger owner Tiffany Pauldon-Banks has curated at Lil Mama’s, with its loud pink-and-green graffiti and gold thrones. Undoubtedly the last thing you imagined you’d be eating in Chattanooga would be a Chicago-style hoagie, but it’s one of best things between two slices of bread in the 423." - Eater Staff, Clair Lorell, D.R.E. Lil Mama’s is a solid place to eat. The juicy j (sweet lemon tea and fruit punch) was INCREDIBLE. The chips with the Parmesan and oil were also unique and tasty. The OG hoagie was a little average. The flavor was solid, but I didn’t think it was anything special or up to the value of a $14 sandwich. I don’t want to sound negative. It’s a good sandwich, it just wasn’t something I would go out of my way to come back and get. I do want to come back and try another sandwich and even the hot dog. The atmosphere was great and the staff were amazing and kind!

I’m from Chicago and being here in Chatt for 4 years, you miss some food from back home. The Chicago style hot dog and beef! I had these 2 delivered as traffic downtown was not something I felt like dealing with (lol). Delivery was fast and food hot. The hot dog- OMG! So good and hit the spot. The beef- YUM! Tasted just like home. I am not too sure how often I can order as prices are a little high (not complaining, everything is expensive these days) but it was a nice treat to go back home for dinner. Thank you for the authenticity!

Google
Great sandwiches and super cool staff. Very unique, interesting and friendly environment. Sandwiches are massive. We even got some free Parmesan chips which we can highly recommend. Went with the Crew sandwich and can’t imagine a better way to experience this for the first time. This place is a winner. We were in town on spring break but I can assure you if we make it back to the area. We’ll be back!

Love the vibe and fresh prince style and decor of this place. The music is great and it’s nostalgic for any millennial. I got a large the crew hoagie to share. It was good but the sandwich came to $18 which is quite steep for one sandwich, and I got one drink… so one sandwich and one drink were around $22. It was quite pricey but I liked the atmosphere and the staff were very nice.

Google
My husband and I ordered the OG and Grinder Hoagie and it was delicious! It was so messy though so make sure you grab lots of napkins. We also ordered the ALL THAT AND A BAG OF CHIPS. I liked the parmesan and chili flakes but I thought there was a little too much oil and the bottom chips were soggy. Next time I'll order the oil on the side.

Google
What a delicious and messy sandwich! We were given instructions on how to properly eat the sandwich because it was definitely messy but absolutely delicious. The atmosphere was so cool, the food menu was easy to understand, and the sandwiches were fresh and yummy. If you are ever in town definitely stop by Lil Mama's and enjoy The Crew sandwich

On our trip to Chattanooga, TN, we decided not to spend a lot on food and spend more in bars and attractions. So, we decided to visit this sandwich shop that looks original and different from any other sandwich shop. Location: The location is perfect, in the heart of the city. Nice and clean area. Parking: You don't need to worry about this. You can park on the street and pay at a parking meter or you can park in any of the republic parking around the area. Service: There is no table service, you just order at the cashier and wait for your food. It took about 20 minutes for our order to be ready. It's an inexcusably long wait time for a sandwich. Food quality: The sandwiches are fresh, large, and delicious, but there is nothing authentic or special about them. I don't see any difference between this place and any other sandwich place like Jimmy John's or Jersey Mike's Subs. The hoagies just taste like any other type of typical deli sandwiches. We got The OG (Turkey, Swiss, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Mayo + Mustard, Oregano, Salt & Pepper) and Hella Ham and Hella Chedda (Hella Ham, Hella Chedda, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Oregano, Mayo + Mustard, Salt & Pepper). Price: If you consider the location and the decoration of the store, the prices are ok, but I feel like the prices are a bit expensive for a sandwich shop. We pay for 2 sandwiches $26.22. Atmosphere: The street-style decoration and music match and the presentation of the menu is nice. This place could be 5 stars if the sandwiches had something authentic that differentiates them from any other sandwich shop. Recommendation: The store is not very big and has only a few tables, I recommend you arrive before popular hours. Would I visit this sandwich shop again? MAYBE and ONLY IF they offer unique recipe sandwiches and IF the service is faster. Follow me. Instagram @hoppincities Facebook: @hoppincities Twitter: @citieshoppin hoppincities.com

Man. That Spicy Mama is amazing. The flavor, the toppings, I took a few bites and bad to take a break so I could get a picture of it. I also got the chicken Philly which was a special. Definitely coming back each time I'm in Chattanooga.

Yelp
What a fun place to dine! The graffiti was so colorful. I got a color splash in my eyes the minute I walked in. Big menu on the wall was easy enough to read without squinting. I ordered the big daddy Spicy Mami and it was tasty. Service was over the moon. We got greeted with a big smile. I hope they will open a restaurant in Nashville soon. They will do so well over there.

Yelp
Chicago is known for its great food, but there are three signature items for which everyone knows Chicago, its pizza, its' Italian Beef and its' Chicago dogs. I'm not exactly sure where this Chicago Hoagie thing came from, but I tried the Italian Beef when they first opened (and it came up woefully short versus a true Chicago Italian Beef) and today I revisited to give their version of a Chicago Dog a try. Here's the problem, no Vienna Beef ( you shouldn't have to ask) no truly iridescent relish, I'm not sure what that attempt of fresh cut chopped onions was, and while it was a poppyseed bun, it wasn't the soft fluffy bun I expected. The mustard and celery salt they got right, but the Chicago Dog is iconic, with a flavor profile known and loved by tens of millions and this just comes up far too short. It's a cute place, the service was fine, but if you're looking for Chicago signature food products, it doesn't work. Hoagies, not really a Chicago thing, so I don't know.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch with a new coworker (well we're both new) after my sister passed by and thought it sounded good. And boy was it! My coworker and I ordered two sandwiches and split them so we could sample both. We had the Spicy Mami and the Crew. I had my half of the Spicy Mami at the restaurant and it was delicious! I took my half of the Crew to go and perhaps since it was in my work fridge for the second 1/2 of the day was very soggy. So don't wait, eat it all fresh. We made our meals a combo and had some of the best 1/2 tea, 1/2 fruit punch I've had in a while. But those chips... honey! Deliciousness. I know it's just Lays but the sauce on top makes the chips. I guess that's why their called "all that and a bag of chips". The chips are a definite don't pass! Loved the overall decor and how the theme carried through to the menu. Cute restaurant and a definite add to my list of go to spots for lunch!

Yelp
Utilized catering on a long work Saturday at UTC basketball. Usually have pizza in our media room for GameDay staff and media with Papa John's taking great care of us. Lil Mama's stepped up on a doubleheader weekend for a special treat. Sandwich array was perfect with 100 minis. Add in beverages - do not pass on the Juicy Jae - and timely arrival, and the hit was a home run. Kori & Michael we're great to work with too. Give them a try either downtown or via catering. You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
A fantastic and fun little spot for lunch, especially if you're just passing through town. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the decor is exactly what you want from a sandwich spot in an urban area.

Yelp
I can not say enough good about this place! The sandwiches are fun and creative. We did the lunch combo. And at first I was a little disappointed by the sandwich being on the smaller side. However, once I started eating - it was more than enough. Quality ingredients made it very worthwhile!

Yelp
We don't get down town to Chatt much but heard great things about here! Was joy disappointed!!!everyone has to try this place!

Christine B.

Yelp
Everyone knows mama makes the best sandwiches. So fresh & so clean, you know what I mean

Christy T.

Yelp
Delicious hoagies! I had the Hella Ham and Hella Chedda - so good! Friendly service, nice outdoor patio. We will be back!

Yelp
Cool little sandwich shop. It's a great location too. Easy to get in and out of. Service was good too. Out front was a sign about it being voted the best sandwich in Chatt. No lies there. I got the Spicy Mami, and it was really good. Also, they make their chips in house. Everything tasted fresh too. Word to the wise. A Chicago hoagie is wet because of the oil and vinegar. They wrap their sandwiches with serán wrap. Peel off the first layer. Roll back the second layer as you eat, or it's crazy messy. It was delicious tho!! There's not a lot of seating, but I went before it got too busy. I could see where this place gets real busy at lunch during the week. Definitely check this place out!!

Yelp
$80 for 3 sandwiches, chips and drinks. Little steep in my opinion. Sandwiches were good. The ambience is cool. I like the style inside with graffiti art all over
google avatar

Ryann N.

Yelp
The food here is impeccable! Best sandwiches in town hands down! Italian Beef and Spicy Miami are my favs! Salads are great too when you want to cut the carbs a bit! Service is always amazing as well!

Yelp
I am so glad I decided to check this spot out!! It is honestly the BEST sub I have ever eaten! Lil Mama's Chicago Style Hoagy is an amazing spot that you have to check out if in downtown Chattanooga TN. It is located in a shopping plaza that offers paid parking. I think we paid $2.00 for 2 hours. It's easy to spot- look for the bright colors and graffiti script. When we walked in it truly brought back memories to my childhood! The decor is so cute, fun and simply takes you back to the 90's! There is a menu on the board, but the staff is also available to tell you more about each hoagy. My party that consisted of 2 adults and 1 child ordered two 9 inch subs. We tried the The OG ( Turkey, Swiss, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, Mayo + Mustard, Oregano, Salt & Pepper ) and The Crew ( Turkey, Ham, Bacon, JP Sauce, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Oregano, Swiss Cheese, Cheddar Cheese). We also ordered the All That and a Bag of Chips ( Plain chips, topped with our famous oil + parmesan cheese). Let's talk about how amazing this meal was. I know it sounds cliche but this sandwich was the best tasting sandwich I have had in all my years on this earth. Have you ever buy into something and immediately wanted more? In addition doing this and dreading it being gone before it's all gone? That's how I felt with this sandwich. I hated that I agreed to split it with the kid! Everyone in my party agreed that this hoagy was EVERYTHING!! The chips also get an A+! If you are ever in Chattanooga TN I am begging you to stop by this place. I can't imagine anyone not liking what they have to offer.

Yelp
Sweet patio on a quiet, downtown side street - perfect spot to share Lil Mama's signature hoagy. The dessert is alive with scrumptious flavors of strawberry cake and banana pudding! Your taste buds will thank you:)

Yelp
We enjoyed our hoagie from Lil Mama's. It was delicious and delightful but, messy. The aesthetic is unique with the graffiti art and decor. There were however things I would point out. They unfortunately were lacking good structure, especially regarding their front-of-house presence and management. The place was empty for the most part with people only coming in to pick up orders yet, tables had crumbs on them and there was quite often nobody in the front area. There were three people present and one seemed more interested in walking around talking on his cell phone then anything else. Personally, I would recommend placing your order ahead, to-go. The biggest issue for me when eating was that the hoagies are double wrapped in plastic wrap...about 2-3 yards of it. This combined with the oil, that each hoagie comes standard with, makes for a very messy experience. The hoagies are also smaller overall than other places (ex: Jersey Mike's, etc.) for relatively similar prices. A paper wrapper would be more approachable and manageable for customers especially those who are eating in since plates are not provided and all hoagies are wrapped to go.

Yelp
The sandwiches we ordered were top-notch and the decorations were cool. The lady at the front was very friendly, and it's easy to tell she cared about what she was doing. I'm not sure if she was the owner, but she treated us like she was. I hope she enjoys Orlando with her grandkids. The cost of $16 was a bit high for a 10-inch sandwich. Also, the pre-existing sandwich menu was a bit limited, and it's not clear if you can build your own and what was available to do that. I'd go again.

Patrick T.

Yelp
Had The Dip (Chicago Italian). Outstanding sandwich! Staff was super nice and polite!
google avatar

Eden M.

Yelp
Good food, just wish the workers looked a little more cleaner. Every time I go in there this one lady is sitting down telling everyone else what to do. Makes me wonder how fresh and clean they are in the back.
google avatar

Diane C.

Yelp
Yummy gluten-free sandwich! Awesome service, ensuring my health by making my sandwich Gluten-Free, ordered it with extra Mayo and it was a delicious messy sandwich. It's a very fun environment with a friendly staff who seem genuinely happy to see us! Will definitely be back for more fun and yummy food.
google avatar

Yelp
As someone who recently went to visit Chicago, this does feel like a little piece of Chicago landed in Chattanooga. The sandwiches are solid. And the banana budding was absolutely top notch. And above all else they could teach a master class on customer service. Everyone was extremely friendly and also very personable.
google avatar

Yesenia H.

Yelp
It was my first time trying a hoagy and it was great. I dream about my spicy mami hoagy all the time The customer service though was terrible the girl had a whole attitude and BARELY talked .. she was mumbling the whole time.
google avatar

Buddy B.

Yelp
A great little spot for lunch. I always try to support small business and this is a great opportunity. I had the Italian which was new to the menu and was not disappointed. True Chicago style, roll the cellophane down as you eat. Sauces were tangy and zesty and the bread was great. Plenty of meat on the sandwich. The chips with olive oil and Parmesan were ok. The decor took me back to my teenage years with full late 80s/early 90s tunes. Oreo banana pudding was borderline obscene it was so rich and good. The total meal was a little pricey but everywhere is more expensive now and I'd rather give a small business a few more dollars than a chain. Overall very pleasant experience and I'll visit again.

Stacie K.

Yelp
The environment is a vibe. Grab a gallon of the fruit punch. You can't go wrong with any of the food.
google avatar

Jess M.

Yelp
Really cute inside. The tea was amazing! I liked the pink lemonade and the mixed version. Nice people.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I found this joint searching online. Awesome sandwiches! I do believe on Thursday they offer steak and cheese subs. I got one....it was so good! One thing though.....the bun got pretty soggy towards the end. My wife got the original....she loved it! Homemade drinks and Cori the owner is super chill and laid back. Really easy to talk to. The decor screams 80's Fresh Prince!

Dayna W.

Yelp
These are some the most fresh and delicious sandwiches we've had. We always make the effort to stop by when we're in town or driving by.
google avatar

Traci C.

Yelp
It reminds me of 90s retro, Fresh Prince of Bel Aire kinda vibe. It's a little different than your usual sandwich shop (a bit more $$ as well). The sandwich is huge (the small one was enough for two in my opinion) so it was worth the price. I had the Spicy Mami (of course, because it had jalapenos and such) and the "All That and a Bag of chips"- plain chips with oil and parmesan (takes 'em to a whole new level!) They don't have Coke (bummer) but I did have a delightful glass of their in house version of an Arnold Palmer and it was tasty. The lady who took my order was very helpful in explaining the menu options and recommending her favorites. If you're looking for a thick, juicy sandwich then check them out.
google avatar

Kendrick M.

Yelp
Great to find a spot to get a taste of home. Was craving a Chicago Style hot dog and they delivered. Quickly got us our food and we're very attentive. Cool surroundings as well as a good location.

John N.

Yelp
disappointed. last time I was there it was great. this time the "Chicago " style hot dog was not a real chicago, Vienna beef hot dog and no sport peppers
google avatar

Michael L.

Yelp
Banana pudding. This is why you come here. Amazing. Sandwich was good. Bag of chips was ok. Total for two sandwiches, two chips and splitting a banana pudding $50. Went back and bought two more banana pudding. Absolutely amazing and life changing.
google avatar

Mrs L.

Yelp
A super cool place with a great nostalgic vibe. The food was great, especially if you like Chi-town faves. The chips were amazing and the staff/owner are very welcoming.
google avatar

Joshua G.

Yelp
First time hoagie and it won't be my last! My hoagie was immaculately tasty. The service is sweet and the ambiance captures a unique 90s vibe.
google avatar

Katherine O.

Yelp
Absolutely amazing sandwiches!!! We will definitely go again! Service wonderful! Fruit punch is legit and took me back to my childhood!

Marc K.

Yelp
Great hoagies and service Owner was running checkout and was very friendly. Menu choices are great, can't wait to try the Italian beef and Chicago dog
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Okay, I just want to start off with how delicious there sandwiches are. But for the price you should be getting what you paid for. We ordered a 9in .. this has happened the past 3 or so times.

Catherine Q.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches, homemade potato chips, and banana pudding. Also located in a great spot with lots of shops in walking distance
google avatar

Nayana N.

Yelp
One of the best sandwiches we've ever had. Was a bit of a wait even though it wasn't crowded, but worth the wait. We got the OG to split as a snack to hold us over for dinner and immediately regretted not getting a whole sandwich for the each of us lol. A simple sandwich so wonderfully put together. Will be a must any time we visit Chatt.

Yelp
Love this local spot! Everything from the graffiti walls to the 90's hip hop music is such a vibe. The interior is super creative and fun. I had a big ass hoagie (OG) and regret nothing haha. I've never had one that is oiled and seasoned on the outside of the bread and it was delicious. Also I'm so glad the helpful woman working suggested the bag of chips cause they are FIRE. Definitely trouble for me cause I could eat a giant sack of those things. Such a great place, we can't wait to come back and try some of the daily specials soon.
google avatar

Yelp
THE best hoagies. I have to stop myself from ordering more than once a week. Mouth watering! I usually order for delivery to my office but I enjoy going into the shop, as well. Such a cool vibe with 90s themed ambiance. Staff and owners are friendly and welcome!

A S.

Yelp
Such a cool spot! The 90s vibe was a lot of fun and the customer service was great! I got the lil mama grinder and should have bought another for later because it was freakin delicious. Don't sleep on the Oreo banana pudding! I only bought it because my husband loves banana pudding and historically I hate it. Turns out I only like it if it's from Lil Mama's! We'll absolutely be stopping again next time we are in Chattanooga. SO GOOD.
google avatar

Allen C.

Yelp
Lil Mama always makes sure the boys are well fed. The meat is delicious, toppings fresh and bread holds up like a Mike Singletary led front seven in Super Bowl XX. I had the Spicy Mami and the Fancy Banana Pudding. The hoagies are huge! Two Lil Mama size feed all four of our family members. The Spicy Mami was loaded with protein. Vegetables are crisp and the banana peppers and jalapeños take it to Wrigleyville on the Red Line. The Fancy Banana Pudding is delicious. It is a spring church potluck on the lawn in a cup. Love this place and the people. Lil Mama is on my play list.

Riley C.

Yelp
Absolutely awesome place! My husband and I went to visit a couple weeks ago. The staff member were super friendly too!
google avatar

Stori P.

Yelp
This spot is so awesome! The atmosphere was so fun. There is unique graffiti on the wall and super cool tables. We took pictures in the throne of all the walls. The staff explained the menu to us and told us the most popular items to get. The sandwiches were a little overpriced considering there was mostly mayo and lettuce in mine but they tasted super good! Loved this little spot. The banana pudding is to die for!

Lisa D.

Yelp
The best sandwiches we have ever had! Do not skip this place!!!! Everyone in our group raved! Don't pass up the homemade banana pudding either!!!

Alyssa R.

Yelp
The environment is sooo fun & everyone is super kind. Amazing hoagie too! Def recommend this place

Yelp
As a millennial with fond memories of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and music by Outkast, Lil Mama's Chicago Style Hoagy was a treat. Bursting with decade-culture and personality, LMCSH hits you right in the nostalgia funny bone. The décor is unapologetically 90's and I loved it! The Chi-Town vibes made me want to head north and get me another dose of The Windy City. Taste: I had the Spicy Mami for lunch today and at 12 inches, you better bring your A-game. Lil Mama does not hold back when it comes to filling up that hoagie with protein and veggies. The heat was on the mild side, which is not a complaint! Jalapenos, banana peppers, and red chili flakes will only get you so much spice, but that caters nicely to those wanting some heat without feeling overwhelmed. The All-that-and-a-bag-of-chips are potato chips with a splash of oil and parmesan cheese - very tasty. The Juicy Jae is Lil Mama's take on fruit punch and sweet tea - on the sweeter side and tasty, bring that insulin! The food was a little on the oily/condiment-heavy side so check your pride at the door and ask for extra napkins. Price: As you might expect for well-crafted hoagies bursting with personality, the price tag for this dining experience can rack up to the mid 20's range very quickly. You may be able to spend less for lunch somewhere else, but my guilt for spending too much money is buried deep under the weight of this stuffed feeling as the "itis" sets in for the afternoon. I'm glad I work close enough to Lil Mama's to make them a part of my regular lunch rotation.
google avatar

Stephanie B.

Yelp
What a wonderful experience. Found this little gem from a tick-tok post & decided to try it. The sandwiches & hot dogs were delicious & the service was great.

Katherine A.

Yelp
Lil Mama's is amazing!!! I was craving a Grinder Salad sandwich and it over delivered. Also, the "all that and a bag of chips" is to die for, a must order. Run don't walk to Lil Mama's, you will not be disappointed
google avatar

Greg O.

Yelp
Lil Mama's is definitely worth trying. The best things about the restaurant are the service and the location. The food was good, somewhat gimmicky, not authentic Chicago style in my opinion. The value was just not there. The prices were high for what you actually got. When I got "all that and a bag of chips" and it was a small bag of plain lays with olive oil and dry herbs sprinkled on top, I wasn't sure about the "all that" part.
