The 38 Best Restaurants in Vancouver

"Open for: Lunch and dinner Price range: $$ Lila is a joyful collaboration between two of the city’s most important chef-owners, good friends Meeru Dhalwala (Vij’s) and Shira Blustein (the Acorn), known for their long-time championing of sustainability, community building, and mentorship and support of women in hospitality. Located on the “Michelin Mile” strip of Main Street and boasting one of the city’s best hidden patio gardens, Lila brings Dhalwala’s modern Indian cuisine and Blustein’s plant-based sensibility together for truly plate-licking results in a slender charcoal-grey and sage-green room festooned with leafy plants. The menu prioritizes plants, plus some dairy and sustainable seafood, and it begs to be shared, so don’t be shy in ordering one or two extra dishes — you haven’t lived till you’ve devoured cold garam masala-marinated jackfruit for breakfast. Whatever you do, always make room for the potato and cauliflower pakoras with bright mango-and-mint chutney. Best for: Vegetarian or vegan tasting menu dining." - Nikki Bayley

My husband took me here for dinner. We dined outside in the back patio. We ordered 3 dishes to share, which for us was more than enough (papri chaat, portobello mushroom and paneer curry and black chickpea and zucchini cakes in curry, extra bowl of rice). We’re Indian and the food was a modern take on classic Indian dishes. My husband loved the chai. The service was great, one of the servers was very attentive and because one of our dishes took a little long to come out we were treated with two complimentary desserts (the gulab jamun—so good!). All in all was a wonderful experience, will definitely be back again.

I went to Lila for my birthday dinner and had a fantastic experience. The service was super warm and attentive, the back patio was very cozy. This was my second time going and the food was equally as delicious and high quality. The arctic char was perfectly cooked! The papri-chaat was a standout as well, perfectly crispy and bursting with flavour. The mogo fries were a bit too salty for my liking, but the taste was great otherwise. As a pescatarian, I loved that I could choose from anything off the menu! Tons of vegan and vegetarian options! Will definitely be back again :)

Such a good find for a different take on Indian food! Portions are good for sharing, around 2-3 dishes per person is a perfect amount. Flavours were very fresh and tasty, not too rich or strong. The chaat is SO good!

Overall good food. Appies had varying flavour and came at a decent time, though served before our cocktails arrived. Id say the inside of the restaurant is cuter than the patio. We ordered around 6:20 and our two mains (the only two fish entrees) came at 8 pm…… no one acknowledged or apologized for how long it took. Overall slow and inattentive service.

Came here last night with 3 friends. The patio is a hidden gem. Don't mis out on trying it for the summer. Now onto the food. We shared everything and had 9 different dishes from start to finish. Some of my favourites were: - Spicy Beets - Marinated and Seared Arctic Char "Risotto" - Pacific Prawns - BC Ling Cod (Line Caught) - Organic BC Portobello Mushroom and Paneer There's a jackfruit dish which is very similar to the prawns dish. Don't order both as the two curry dishes are almost the same. The pakora was good but didn't wow me personally. Get two orders of the spiced beets instead. We got one of each dessert for the table to share. Both were great and a nice way to end the meal. Great spot for a meal, if you're visiting from out of town or just looking for something different then your usual spot.

We came here for Valentine's so it was super busy and with a great bustling atmosphere. Staff were friendly and were able to accommodate my fiance's wheelchair with no issues. Our server recommended the beets and we were thankful to take the suggestion as it was actually one of our highlights from the evening. The mushroom and paneer curry was equally as flavourful, with a thicker sauce. We also tried the pea and halloumi curry but it wasn't to our personal taste. A bit more of a watery sauce compared to the paneer one. The bread was also fell a bit flat for us but could just be personal preference as we prefer thicker and fluffier bread. Overall we had a great night and were glad we tried this place out!

What a beautiful vibe! Sitting in the garden to have spectacular food and had the best service at a restaurant so far while being in BC. I’m still talking about the food from last night and how beautiful it looked but also the taste 😍

Excellent service, a great playlist, beautiful decor, and one of the most beautiful gardens I’ve seen. The quality of the produce is outstanding! The combination of creative, flavor-packed sauces and texture of the best vegetables/fish you can get in Vancouver can compete against any meat dish in the city— and it’s all very affordable. The Portobello mushrooms, the lingcod, the ravioli, the summer salad, and the mogo fries with Bengali sauce are definitely a must-try

Yelp
I've been wanting to try Lila since I found out about it opening and I finally did. I love that it has a modern twist on Indian food with a number of dishes being vegan/gluten free or having a vegan option available. As someone who has been dairy free for over a year, I often find it difficult when I there's no dairy free or vegan options available (and Indian food is one of my favourite cuisines). The restaurant itself is small so I would recommend making a reservation especially when heading into the evening dinner hours. They have super cute but small patio upfront and also a back yard too with some tables (didn't get to see this). Service was wonderful. The staff were quite friendly which was amazing. I will definitely be back here.

Yelp
What a fun experience. We tried most of their vegan items this time and I am impressed by their variety. We just barely made their happy hour so I managed to get their Pretty Hard Lemonade which was tasty and refreshing. The menu is designed to be shared and they recommend approximately 2 dishes per person which was pretty accurate. Now on to the food. Cauliflower and Potato Pakora: 10/10 came in a plate of 5. Decent size and for the happy hour price, it was very reasonable. Great flavour, well seasoned and the chutney was delicious. Highly recommended. White Bean and Kale Curry: 7/10 although my friend rates it 10/10 I found it a bit salty for me and lacked flavour compared to everything else we had. I expected a bit more heat with the jalapeno, but I didn't even notice it was there. Potato Tiki: 9/10 I loved the flavour. I'm a huge fan of the salty sweet, so the tamarind and blueberry mixed with the potato and chickpeas was the perfect combo. I would say the reason its 9/10 was because we both though the dish would be hot but it was a cold dish, and feel like it should have been noted on the menu. Black Chickpeas and Zucchini Cakes in Coconut Curry: 8/10 zucchini cakes could have used more flavour and the coconut curry, while good, wasnt as flavourful as I expected. Flavour was mild with just a touch of heat. The basmati rice was excellent. Super fluffy and cooked perfectly. Our service was great and attentive. Would love to come back and try the vegetarian/meat dishes one day.

Yelp
A new restaurant on Main street, which I believe is associated with Vij's and the Acorn. Very plant forward restaurant with friendly service and surprisingly big (and warm) back patio area. Potato & Cauliflower Pakoras with Fresh Mango & Mint Chutney ($7 during happy hour) 7.5/10 Look, it's very hard to mess up fried food in general, but the fresh mango and chutney really takes it up a notch! This is one of the few food options for happy hour, so would recommend you take advantage of it. Halloumi Cheeese and Peas in 7 Spice Bechamel ($23) 8.5/10 My love for halloumi cheese might make me biased, but imo this is the best dish in Lila. Love how rick and thick the curry was, our friend couldn't stop dipping everything in it! Black Chickpea and Zucchini Cakes in Coconut Curry with Basmati Rice ($24) 6.5/10 A pretty interesting patty like curry. I like the coconut taste but felt like the curry was very watery. Cauliflower Sauteed in Cumin and Tomato Masala ($15) 6.5/10 Somehow this dish was also rather unmemorable to me. Pretty much what it says on the menu? Indian Mango Custard ($12) 8.5/10 The mango in combination with the blackberry jam is tdf. We underestimated this dish given how simple it looked but devoured it in minutes. Ginger Cardamom Chai ($3.5) 7.5/10 Nothing like a good old chai to warm you up when the weather gets chilly (and a portable heater). Very good chai with a nice kick.

Yelp
Solid Indian fusion place that's similar to Vij's, which is no surprise given that it's a collab between Vij's and Acorn/ex-Arbor restaurateurs. They have a bunch of vegan options, which is what got us in the door to try the place. We sat out back in their pretty garden dining area. Their menu is done like Acorn's, in that the smaller portioned items are listed on top, with bigger items at the bottom. We ordered: -Potato & Cauliflower Pakoras with Mint & Mango Chutney ($10 for happy hour; $15 normally). This came with 5 pieces -- why 5? That won't be evenly divisible for most tables! -- with a really nice batter that wasn't too thick and a nice creamy dip that I wouldn't have called a chutney. Not too oily, with a high vegetable-to-batter ration. This was a nice way to start the meal. -Sprouted Mung Bean Salad ($8). Don't order this right now -- it needs major revising. Very boring and plain. We told the server about this, and he wiped it from the bill, thanking us for the feedback. Real nice service. -White Beans & Kale Curry ($17). Super tasty, moderately spicy, moderately rich curry, though I didn't really notice any kale -- perhaps it was pureed and blended into the curry. The beans were does nice, the fried onions were phenomenal in here, and the dish was garnished with chopped fresh tomatoes and raw onion. Excellent dish. -Sauteed Seasonal Vegetables & Lentil Curry with Pakoras & Tamarind ($26). Solid dish, with lots of carrot, edamame, onion, with 4 pieces of pakora, and a soupy pureed lentil curry. Nice flavours and textures, and very filling. The food was very tasty other than the one dud. Lots of care was put into the dishes and to the aesthetics. Service was absolutely top-notch. Reservations recommended, as it gets busy, especially on the weekend. We'll definitely return in a few months once they've fully dialed in what it is they do. But it's already a nice spot and worth visiting.

Yelp
Amazing taste and quality, with the same excellent service and dining area as the Arbor which preceded it. Back patio is super chill. My only gripe is the price and lack of options for bigger eaters. This is not a place to stuff yourself. 5 pakoras for 15 bucks is a hard pill to swallow, even though they are truly incredible tasting

Yelp
Stumbled upon a soft opening at Lila & luckily all 5 of us were seated. Ordered all 7 starters to share & they were superb. Service was great - a happy crew. cocktails, also excellent. Had 'marg' with spicy rim, tamarind, and a mega ice-cube, so it's chilled till the last sip (why doesn't every place do this?) Warm, cozy room, great decor with the greenery. Can't wait to come back and sample the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Food was absolutely delicious - and the back patio is so perfect in the summer. The beets, cheddar samosa and arctic char were some of my favourite dishes but loved them all. Great cocktails as well.
