The Best Montreal Cafés for Working or Studying | Eater Montreal

"This longtime, beloved Little Burgundy coffee shop has not lost its step after 16 years in business. The menu is simple: top-quality coffees and teas alongside a couple pastries and a breakfast sandwich, but it’s a great place to get some work done. There’s also a location in Verdun." - JP Karwacki

"15-year Little Burgundy staple Lili & Oli just made its first expansion, down into Verdun — expect the same good coffee (with beans from Montreal roaster canal), and friendly service that turned Lili & Oli into a neighbourhood favourite in the first place." - Tim Forster

Nice and quaint cafe. We went for a Cold Brew and a Petit Cafe Glace (which wasn’t so petit!) on a hot day. Loved them both. Interesting idea of coffee infused ice cubes, so more coffee as the cubes melt. We didn’t try the food as we weren’t hungry. The staff was nice and friendly. A couple of parking spots on the other side of the street. Definitely recommended.

Google
Fantastic espresso - clearly they care deeply about the quality of the beans they use, as my shot was expertly prepared and tasted beautiful. Accordingly, I bought a bag of the same beans (for which they also gave me a sample of pour-over coffee) and the espresso tastes just as good at home. On top of the top-tier coffee, staff, and service, their baked goods were very good and the breakfast sandwich was literally perfect: the texture and taste of the bread, egg, bacon, and tomatoes blended together perfectly. How do they do it? Johnny a beaucoup aimé. Yum

Google
Cute little spot, came on a Friday before noon and barely found a seat. They have good matcha and lattes, definitely recommend. However, they were already out of most of their pastries.

Lovely small café with a great taste of music, superb lattes and very good pastries. My fave place in the neighborhood where I stayed for a week.

Google
It's a small cozy café with AMAZING coffee. Like, I was taken aback by how flavorful and tasty it was. The attention and service is outstanding. They prepare your drink practically in front of you. I'm a little bit sad that they don't have more options to eat, because it's such a nice place.

I literally loved this place! The vibes, the team was amazing, helpful and professional. The place is fresh and warm! And finally loved the coffee Enjoy the vibes ☕️

Google
Loved their coffee. We ordered cortados with oat milk and they were made perfectly well. They had apple carrot muffins but we didn't try them. Nice and sunny place. Gets busy sometimes.

Google
This place used to be good but now the music is so loud. Feels like you're at club. I couldn't even hear my friend talk. It's also weird to put the music so loud considering most people are on their laptops.

Yelp
The latte's were tasty, and the girls here were so sweet and helpful. There are no flavored coffees here. It's so peaceful inside.

Yelp
Made a special trip over here as a place you can comfortably bring your dog inside. A supremely cold day, though a couple tables were still available at this cozy cafe. Between two people, split the Chocolate Chip Muffin, Chocolate Croissant, and two Lattes (total $20ish). The coffee is balanced and served in a thick clear glass. Good pairing with the pastries and not overly bitter. The croissant is dry, not as buttery as would hope and the chocolate isn't very spread out inside. Muffin is also okay; spaced out chocolate chips but not moist either. Service gets items out quick, and the pup had a fine time without being bothered by others. Definitely cramped inside, so wouldn't spend too long here.

Yelp
So awesome that they use coffee in their ice cubes!!my husband and I found this great little place while exploring Montréal today. Beautiful, clean and modern space with a small menu. We opted for iced, oat milk lattes and shared a muffin. Both were absolutely delish. The ice cubes were made with coffee, so they didn't dilute the drinks. The muffin was so moist and filled with lots of raisins, nuts and carrot. The service was super-friendly and efficient. Highly recommend this place!

Yelp
Great coffee spot! Friendly team, welcoming location, never disappoints! While ive never tried the pastries, the drinks are always on point and atmosphere perfect to work remotely or just grab coffee !

Yelp
This was our go to coffee spot in Montreal. The service was exceptional and the coffee was phenomenal. It was pretty busy every morning but we really enjoyed being there. The best part was seeing people with their dogs... super cute dogs! Aside from coffee they also have amazing pastries. Muffins, croissants, cookies, and some danishes. The place has lots if natural light and plants and it's small and cozy. It's on a great spot right next to other shops and restaurants.

Yelp
Very good spot, coffee is good and the casual, chill vibes are on point. One of my faves in St Henri

Yelp
As I am into cafe crawl montreal, I spot this coffee shop while I am walking on Notre Dame street. The name of this cafe caught my attention. I meet up my sister and tell her... let's try this place. I come back here. It's a very small space, but has a cozy feeling. The service is friendly, but it was long, since there is only one person working. My cappuccino was good, but I had better. Plus, it has free wifi... whooo whooo...

Yelp
My go-to every morning for the past year and a half, a cosy little place with a lot of history too, I'm always satisfied with the unique quality of their coffee and the home feeling the owners create when they serve customer after customer after customer. No wonder people stream through this spot bright and early, it's not just the coffee, it's the service!

Ana C.

Yelp
It was good ! I liked the grilled cheese sandwich, the iced coffee and chai latte. I would go back.

Yelp
After attempting to grab a coffee here for many years, I finally made it today. I thought they would have great coffee but sadly enough their lattes were nothing exceptional- froth and coffee itself. Something for them to work on perhaps to improve the froth and pick a better coffee brand. The tables are extremely cramped which made it less enjoyable. I am glad I can cross it off my list.

Yelp
It's a nice little cafe right around Atwater Market. I went there since I was in that area and was looking for a study spot. It was packed with people in the morning and the whole cafe has this nice aroma of coffee that welcomes you as soon as you step inside. One extra bonus is that they allow dogs inside and even if you don't have a dog you get to pet dogs when someone stops by with their dogs :) it was something lovely in the middle of studies :) The latte was strong and I would say the coffee quality was on the top 15 percentile of all the cafes I have been to in Montreal. The only downside for me was that it was pretty noisy and it was hard to concentrate on studies. But again maybe it's just a great place to have great coffee and hanging out with friends - not for quiet study session. Also given that there are very few cafes in Montreal that allows dog inside, this place deserves an extra star! Would definitely go back!

Yelp
My go-to coffee spot. I love the service I get there, always consistent and always delicious. Everyone is so nice and friendly.

Yelp
Excelent coffee The mocha is delicious! I can't wait to try the latte and cappuccinos. I think the vienoiseries come from a place not far. They are very fluffy and tasty.

Yelp
It's a small coffee shop next to atwater market. They have a tasty coffee, and a friendly staff.

Yelp
Adorable little neighbourhood café on Notre-Dame St. The service was very attentive and welcoming and the music was excellent. I definitely recommend this place to meet up with a friend or to study. The atmosphere is so chill and cozy.

Yelp
J'aime tellement l'atmosphère détendue de Lili & Oli. And the fact that your four-legged furry friend is welcome to sit in the warm café at your feet and chill, or make new friends is great. Mais les cafés eux-mêmes était très, très ordinaire, malgré qu'ils ont été fait devant nous, par un barista enjoué, était froids, pas beaucoup de saveur. Maybe it was just a bad batch of coffee, maybe the "machina"'s température gauge was faulty but definitely NOT worth the price!

Kayla M.

Yelp
Amazing place!! So happy to live nearby. I love that they use coffee in their ice cubes so your drink never dilutes itself. Friendliest staff ever too. Left me with a smile on my face!

Yelp
TLDR: Quiet atmosphere and good coffee. The barista was very sweet and had great suggestions. I had their mint tea and an almond milk latte which were quite enjoyable. It seems like a very good place to get some work done, as everyone around us was working and were quite studious. They also have Fous de L'ile, which is not an easy find. Definitely, a nice calm cafe to visit.

Yelp
We enjoyed our perfect almond milk lattes with a delicious muffin! It was a bonus that dogs are welcome inside this cafe. We brought our dog's inside to sit by us too!

Yelp
Come by this coffee shop at least once a month and it's a 1 hour walk from my place. Amazing staff, always smiley and welcoming, good selection of teas and excellent music always. If you like butter, the croissant is pretty much butter in the shape of a bun, so decadent and delicious! I don't usually drink coffee, but I have friends who love their cappuccinos or a cup of hot chocolate. Cozy, warm, very Montrealy! ;)

Adrien S.

Yelp
One of the absolute best coffees in Montreal. If I'm in the area, I always make a little detour to get one there. The staff is friendly and the place is quite nice, though very small so seating depends on time of day. But worth trying out if you're around the Atwater market.

Ana Paula S.

Yelp
Favourite cafe in Montreal. Dog friendly and relatively quiet enough for work. Definitely recommend the grilled cheeses, pastries (from Chez Fred I think), and lemon bars!

Yelp
4.5- My boyfriend and I were visiting from New Jersey and Lili and Oli was conveniently down the block from where we were staying for the weekend. It's perfect for an on the run cup of coffee as well as to sit down. We settled in, ordered cappuccinos and a croissant from the barista, and spoke to a few locals who were welcoming and helped us start our last day in Montréal on a good note. I'm very picky with my espresso drinks and their cappuccino has the right balance of roast intensity and frothy milk. Unfortunately, they didn't convert our US dollar to CA dollar and they only take cash. Besides that, awesome spot!

Yelp
Love this dog friendly cafe. Spent a nice afternoon there with my chihuahua. The service and coffee was good.

Yelp
Location: East of Atwater, on Notre-Dame. The closest subway is Lionel-Groulx (Orange) and it's less than a 10-minute walk from there. Street parking is available - both metered and not. There are certain streets that are not zoned where you can park without paying. The place: It's not much bigger than their previous location but the layout is better. The decor is more urban and 'clean', if you will. Very simple, no bells and whistles. I do miss the other location's funky furniture as I think it added charm and a unique style, but what can you do? I do find the lighting to be a little dim. One of my favourite things about Lili & Oli is the music: 80s alternative. LOVE IT. The goods: I've ordered an almond milk latte both times I've stopped in, and they were both enjoyable. Service: Well, the barista is still a little surly and smiling is not his forte but again, what can you do. He makes some decent coffee and that's why I go there. Price point: $4 for the latte - I don't think there is an extra charge for the almond milk but I'm not 100% sure.

Yelp
My favourite latte/capp. in Montreal, and in my top 2 cafes (along with Pikolo). The few times I was here, the espresso had a deeper, richer taste than in a lot of other shops i.e. more Italian, which is what I prefer. Every time, my milk drink was well made. If you haven't been here, you should check it out.

Anaïs B.

Yelp
Best coffee in the area. The barista's are so nice. There's a terrace in the back. Try the muffins and croissants : 100% butter! Kids and dog friendly.
google avatar

Jim M.

Yelp
Was there on a quite afternoon, very quick service. What's better than having a good cup of coffee with a man's best friend?
google avatar

Steph B.

Yelp
Happened to walk by this place and decided to order a latte. Was a little unorganized trying to order as it is set up like a bar so there isn't really a place to stand in line. My latte was delicious though so it made up for the confusion. downside to this cafe is that they only take cash.

Honest R.

Yelp
I LOVEEE that their ice coffee drinks (cold brew, latté, etc) has ice that is frozen coffee (instead of water) so that your drink is not watered down as the ice melts. Phenomenal - bang for your buck!! More places should do that, esp since some cafés load a drink with way too much ice. This café also closes late so you can actually work into the evening and their wifi is great! In addition, I love the dog-friendly atmosphere. The only aspect where I had to minus points was that the cups they use to serve hot drinks do not have a handle; it makes it inconvenient to hold in your hand due to the heat. Hot beverages belong in a mug with a handle!!!!

Talha R.

Yelp
Nice little cafe with decent coffee. Didn't try any of the food so can't comment on that.

Yelp
I miss this incredible coffee joint terribly! Best coffee in Montreal! Such a gem in such a vibrant city!

Yelp
Great environment and friendly people! Nice place to people watch. Coffee was a bit bitter for my liking

Yelp
This might be the best café I've ever been to. The coffee is excellent, they specifically make it to your liking and the atmosphere is very cozy. The location is great not only because it is next to my barber, so I can get a coffee or snack as I wait, but also because it is in the middle of everything. It is a great place to study as well.

M A.

Yelp
This was the best coffee in Montréal. Not to mention friendly, accommodating, and passionate. The ice cubes in the cold brew were made of coffee! Major kudos to the staff at this gem next to Atwater Market!! Love from NYC!!!

Marc O.

Yelp
The coffee is great, nice music and atmosphere. However, during winter time, we could as well taking a coffee outside, it's freezing ! Don't forget your coat. They could add a second door to protect their customers from the cold winter.
