Limapulo

"Opened seven years ago, the restaurant has a rustic edge with vintage canteen-style furniture that evokes waves of nostalgia across a dimly lit venue. Limapulo (which means fifty in Malay), is managed by a team of Malaysian chefs. It’s best to choose plates for sharing and be sure to order the popular Nyonya laksa – a standout dish indeed. The signature sate has a special sauce homemade from star fruits and pineapple. Some menu items are only available on certain days." - Michelin Inspector

Very delicious! I ordered Pie Tee(crispy cup with veggies filling), Nyonyan Laksa(rice noodles curry with fish balls and shrimp), Ayam Pongteh(chicken stew), Sago(sago balls with coconut sauce), and 2iced water. These were for 2 people and they cost 71.95MYR (including 10% service charge), i thought i was reasonable for this portion. And you got carbohydrate, protein, and texture varieties all in one meal!

I came to this restaurant twice (just note—it’s closed on Sundays). I ordered their signature laksa, and it didn’t disappoint! It’s creamy, rich, and the curry flavor hits just right. I also tried the cucur udang—crispy on the outside, soft inside, and nicely savory. The es cendol was quite small, only 5 MYR, so don’t expect much—it’s decent but nothing special. My only feedback is that the table area was a bit dark; better lighting would make the dining experience even nicer. The place gets quite a lot of customers, so it’s clearly loved by many!

The chef-made chicken fusion dish(sorry I forgot about the name but I have a photo!) is soooo delicious!!! The fish is a novel taste for me, not too surprising but I do love that they have only a few bones and the lemon leafy thing gives a good punch. Chow mein is ok to try but I’d recommend to match the dishes with rice. This restaurant is definitely a must-try in KL. Nyonya dish is absolutely amazing!

Venue: 5 minutes walk from Medan Tuanku Monorail starion or Dang Wangi MRT station (Red line). Vintage style Chinese design in an old house. Recommended to book for air-conditioned indoors dining. The outdoor dining area is usually for walk-in diners. Causal rustic setting ourdoors with very small tables. Good vibes. 2 unisex toilets. --- 7.35/10 Service: Busy. To be seated. Write down your order on the order slip, then pass it to the staff. Can order add-on verbally. Food served very fast. Utensils and serviette are already placedvon each table. Polite and smart staff. Proactively gave us bowls for sharing. Pay at the front desk. --- 7.3/10 F&B: English menu with photos. Normal presentation. Good portion. Reasonable prices, +10% service charge. - Ice Barley, MYR 4.5: good - Ice Lemon Tea, RM6.8 with lemon slices: ok - Pai Tee, MYR 14/4pcs: served with chili sauce. Oooooverhyped! How do they have a Michelin star? Ayam berempah lunch: 5/10 (taste was very average) Mee goreng: 3/10 (I have had better at a street side stall) Cucur udang: 2/10 (disappointing, under fried) Pai Tee: 5/10 (I have had better Pai tee in random PJ nyonya places. Here's the worst part of the whole thing... An 'object' that was soft and quite heavy, fell on my shoulders as I took a seat at the table. I jumped in fear. No response from the staff I informed this to. A couple of Malaysian guests quietly scooched over to me at the end of their meal and confirmed it was a rat! When I was leaving, the cashier did own up begrudgingly, that they have a rat problem. And she was also rude, muttering under her breath, rudely raising her voice when she had to repeat to ensure we heard her asking us our preferred payment method. Best part of this shop are the 2 or 3 hardworking ushers and maybe 6/10 for their peranakan Ale. Sorry guys, but no number of stars you rack up can bring me back to this place, ever. In fact you have thrown new light on Michelin's quality itself, in my book.

Tried the Nyonya food here but personally found the taste didn’t suit me — the flavours leaned more towards sweet, lacking the depth and complexity usually expected from traditional Nyonya dishes. Also, the portion sizes weren’t ideal for sharing in a larger group. One bowl is only suitable for 2-3pax, so for a group of 10, you’d need to order 3-4 bowls of the same dish just to share properly. This made dining a bit chaotic and less enjoyable for larger groups as we had to keep passing around small dishes. Might be better suited for smaller groups or those who prefer a milder Nyonya taste. For larger groups, would recommend to order the individual plates (lunch set).

The moment I entered the place, I knew there's something special. And I was not wrong. The place checked everything you can ask for from the restaurant. The food, the ambience, the service and the location. The must try Nyona Laksa was superb. It was flavorful, tasty and filling. The staffs we're prompt and well trained. And I had a chance to speak to the owner who seemed very pleasant and passionate about the food and legacy of the place. I'd visit Limapulo again and I highly recommend it too.

Limapulo: Baba Can Cook is a charming spot in Kuala Lumpur that captures the warmth of Peranakan heritage through both its atmosphere and food. This Michelin-recommended eatery feels like stepping into a nostalgic family home, with vintage décor, old photographs, and mismatched furniture that all add to its charm. The star here is the famous Nyonya Laksa—rich, fragrant, and deeply flavorful, with a coconut-based broth that’s perfectly balanced between creamy and spicy. The noodles are cooked just right, and the toppings are generous, making each spoonful satisfying. Other menu offerings, like the ayam pongteh and Nyonya fried chicken, complement the laksa beautifully if you want to explore more of their home-style flavors.

Yelp
Aka "baba can cook", Limapulo is a hip spot right next to the Sheraton Imperial for authentic Malaysian eats. I saw this on YouTube and glad I made the trek out because the Nyonya Laksa really hit the spot. There were two types of noodles in the laksa broth along with a hard boiled egg, bean curd sheets and fish cake slices. Their lemon ice tea was super refreshing. They just ran out of the roti jala which was unfortunate but the service was great and with plenty of seating outdoors and indoors you won't have much of a wait, if any.

Yelp
This is located off a side street across from the Sheraton. GPS takes you elsewhere. Cute laid back place, but not the sate was bland and nasi lemak was average. Also, give a verbal order as I waited quite a bit by filling out an order slip (they forgot my order).

Yelp
I came here on a Wednesday, thankfully, because I came here specifically to have the laksa. I had to wait a moment even though I was solo eating, because the restaurant was super full and there were some people waiting outside as well. The restaurant interior was a quite nice and not the usual hole-in-the-wall looking place. When I got seated, I was handed a menu, and I saw laksa on the menu so I ordered it soon after. I waited a bit and then my food came out. I was surprised to find there was a mix of thin rice noodles as well as the normal yellow noodles. The flavor was really good and I really enjoyed the food! The noodles were chewy cooked well, and portions were big enough for me to be full. Definitely recommend, but make sure you come on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday if you want laksa!

Yelp
AMAZING. I came here twice in one day. The laksa was the best but come early for it as it sells out. I also had the satay (the chicken for once was cooked right, juicy, unlike every other time I had chicken in Malaysia) which came with a delicious peanut sauce (they add caramelized onions to it or something!) - this was essential because the chicken m'est itself lacked flavour. I also had the pai tee which I thought was delicious but nothing special. Last, I had the pongteh chicken (sweet curry because of the onions I think and the chicken was again very tender). I think if you're looking for very traditional tasting nyonya food, besides the laksa, everything felt like it was toned down in terms of fishy and spicy flavours that you find elsewhere in Malaysia. You may also find it overpriced if you are looking for a more street style of cooking. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for restaurant quality food and service.

Yelp
The modern outside belies the rustic-looking inside, the latter which is full of character and much better represents the wonderful, traditional Nonya flavors served here. There is plenty to choose from on the good-sized menu. I had the highly recommended curry laksa, which was excellent. Also, the satay here immediately became one of my favorites, especially with its wonderful peanut sauce. (Peanut sauces usually taste about the same to me from place to place, but the sauce here -- despite having all the usual ingredients, I'd assume -- was a cut above in the depth of its flavor.) Limapulo is a smallish place, but there is a good amount of seating inside and outside. The staff members a mix of friendly/patient and aloof/impatient, but all are efficient. I would definitely recommend a meal here!

Yelp
I got to Limapulo a couple of minutes early for their 6pm dinner opening time and sat on the edge of a planter, watching a few older men chilling at the entrance, smoking cigarettes, drinking fruit juice, and laughing. The front door was open, but I waited until one of the men sauntered over to the sign and flipped it to 'Open' before entering. The menu is tough if you're not Malaysian, because the order sheet has no pictures and the picture menu has no text. It can be hard to figure out what the pictures are called on the order sheet, but the waiter is more than willing to help out. I ended up with their Tuesday-Thursday special, the lodeh - basically lontong sayur, after sadly passing up their squid sambal petai, one of my favorite dishes. I figured I should try something new. Lodeh, sadly, only sounded new, and tasted pretty much like lontong sayur. No twists here. Was it good lontong sayur? Sure - not bad. I wished it had a wider variety of vegetables, but I particularly liked the two variations on tempeh - one almost crispy despite being in soup, and one gooey - and the broth was thick and rich with coconut milk and the mixed in peanut sauce. If you aren't crazy about sweets, I recommend you remove the red sauce on top of the peanut sauce and don't mix it in. The broth was better before it.

Yelp
Limapulo is one of the places I visit for Nyonya food. Located in town, I was surprised with how easy it was to secure a parking lot during the weekends, as opposed to the weekdays, probably because of the working hours. The place however, can get a bit crowded, but I didn't have any problems on the day I visited. The service here is really nice, attending to our needs very quickly and efficiently. The food here is pretty amazing too. I really fell in love with the Prawn Sambal which seldom happens. The cuisine here proves to be very authentic and you can surely taste the most subtle taste of a Nyonya delight. I had a taste of my friends' dishes as well and they all tasted very good! Sadly, I don't remember the name, but I'll make sure I remember them on my next trip there. What's a Nyonya meal without the signature desert of Cendol and Sago Gula Melaka. These are the bomb man. It's like the grand closing for a 4 years NASA space mission (sorry for that reference, recently watched a show about space). The Cendol is very flavored and the Sago was sweet as ever, I really recommend you have these two after your mains. If you're in for a Nyonya treat, Limapulo will be the place of your choice.

Yelp
Ok first the good: Deco is amazing. They really put in a lot of effort to achieve a retro look. You'll see nostalgic pieces of old Malaysia everywhere you look, as well as plenty of Peranakan nuances. The uncle that runs this place is friendly too. Now the bad: Growing up in the heart of Melaka and eating Peranakan food since I was little, the food here was disappointing. We ordered Pong Teh chicken and it came out diluted and watery. Chap chai was a mix of undercooked and under-seasoned cabbages. Cendol lacked santan and the ice was not freshly ground. It had been taken from a refrigerator/freezer as it stuck in one chunk. Look, I know KL foodies and tourists rave about this place. I don't have any negative agenda. I came here because I wanted a taste of hometown cooking; Peranakan dishes that are full of passion. And if uncle is reading this, this small town girl really hopes you understand i'm not trying to hurt you or your business, but I really hope you rediscover the heart of Baba Nyonya cooking.

Yelp
This place is baba nyonya meets hipster. The food flavor is great, portion not bad. Cozy & earthy. Will come again to try other dishes. Space for improvements though

Yelp
Excellent food and great atmosphere. The food is the combination of Chinese and Malay and it is the best of both worlds imo. Must come if you are in KL.

Yelp
This is not a review, just a warning! They only serve their famous laksa on MONDAYS WEDNESDAYS & FRIDAYS! Take note, friends. The food I had instead was ok. I can't remember what it was - disappointment fogged my memory.
