"Every person should have a friend that they can just spend time with. Someone you don’t have to have a plan with, nor do anything with. Someone you can just exist next to. You’re familiar with each other, and it’s effortless, sitting in silence, in your underwear together, again. The same goes for neighbourhoods and restaurants. Every neighbourhood should have a place that’s nice, reliable, and there when you need it. Linden Stores could be Highbury’s. This wine shop and restaurant is just really quite nice. It’s like knocking on your mate’s door unannounced and plopping yourself on the sofa. Equal amounts easy and comforting. The shop-restaurant setup means that people treat it like so. They come in for a glass of bubbly and a snack, before wandering out after half an hour or so. “See you in a bit”. Or they pop in, bouncing their bike off the door and into the living room sized restaurant, just to pick up a bottle. “I can’t remember what it was, we had it last week...whatever you say, I trust you”. This in-and-out, “you alright”, “see you later”, atmosphere is familiar. It’s lovely. And it’s not something that comes easy. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Similar to that friend’s sofa you’ve spent countless hours, days, nights, and eternities on, you can pitch up here with great ease. For a start, glasses of wine are a fiver. Even Freddo’s cost a fiver these days. This is almost certainly the friendliest wine shop pricing in London. The food is of the small sharing plates variety, obviously, which makes it very easy to dip in and out of. And best of all, there are no instructions or pressures. You just want the pea croquettes for now? Sure. And that’s a good choice because they’re delicious. Need to soak a bit of liquid up with the bread and marmite butter? Good idea. Oh, and marmite butter? We’ll have serious problems with anyone who claims to hate this stuff. If there’s one complaint, it’s that the food isn’t always top notch. We’ve had an oxtail pie here that was so rich and satisfying, we’ve been dreaming about ever since, but some things fall flat, like lamb sweetbreads with bovril mayo, or broccoli with yoghurt and peanuts. Steamed broccoli? Do we look like we’re watching our weight? Not that we mind, because other things, like homemade bourbon biscuits with rhubarb liqueur ice cream, are down right delicious. And, to be honest, it doesn’t matter, because we think we’re going to be coming back here alone, introducing it to a mate, or even someone we really like. Linden Store feels like a keeper. Food Rundown photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Chicken Skin, Smoked Cod’s Roe, Radish A4-sized crisps of the chicken skin variety. Do they definitely need the cod’s roe? Not really. Do we care they have it? Not really. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Bread And Marmite Butter The creamy, salty combination of butter and marmite is very moreish. Crispy Jersey Royals, Wild Garlic, Duck Egg We don’t know if Jersey royals are the most tasty potato in the world, but we do know that when they’re crisped up, and served with wild garlic and duck egg, they’re pretty tasty. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Pea And Yorkshire Fettle Croquettes If you see a word beginning croq- on a menu, you know things are okay. There’s gonna be some cheese, some crunch, and you’re going to wish there was more. These are no different. Torched Plaice, Cockles, Peas ’He’s taken a cockle from me wallet, nicked me keys, ’n torched the bloody place ‘n all’. This is a line Ray Winstone has probably said at some point, and probably inspired this dish. We’re glad it probably did, because it’s excellent. Oxtail Pie, Bone Marrow Mash After tasting a dish as rich as this, it’s hard to imagine why anyone would think of making pie with anything less than oxtail, or mash with anything less than bone marrow. photo credit: Karolina Wiercigroch Elderflower Panna Cotta, Shortbread, Strawberries No, no, that’s not a door on your plate. That’s just an enormous piece of shortbread. This is familiar, sweet, and makes you feel in good spirits. Bourbon Biscuits And Rhubarb Liqueur Ice Cream This is inspired. It’s like a Famous Five recipe come to life. “Julian! Dick! Come quick! I’m dipping a bourbon biscuit in Aunt Fanny’s rhubarb ice cream and it’s absolutely scrumptious!”" - Jake Missing

Went there for dinner on a Friday evening. Really nice and cozy place, great atmosphere, and wonderful service. To begin with, they go beyond to accommodate food requirements and allergies (e.g., gluten free). The food was delicious and goes well with the wines they have on offer. The format is small plates to share. We got six dishes between the two of us, and all tasted good. Some highlights were the beetroot dish, as well as the meat pie (which could have benefitted from a bit more salt though). Moreover, as I mentioned, they did go out of their way to make certain dishes gluten free. Will definitely go there again.

Very, very delicious! As a northerner I love the food, northern at heart but with a very stylish and professional twist. The tatty scones and oxtail pie were a highlight, but in truth I could have spent an hour just eating the bread and butter. The wine was tasty and the staff very knowledgeable. A great place, enjoy your visit!

Wine shop with a restaurant that allows you to even buy your bottle of wine and have it. Restaurant area is really cozy, makes you feel almost like being at home. Food is really tasty with a lot of flavours. As a wine shop they have very reasonable prices and quite interesting wines. We'll be back again!

Exceptionally good! We went as a group of four and tried almost everything on the food menu. Standouts were the smoked & fried spuds and the Scottish inspired dishes of haggis and the tattie scones. As we're local we will definitely return and love that their menu is seasonal so looking forward to trying other delicious dishes. The wine list also offers some great variety and the host helped us select a lovely bottle.

This is a real treat and local hidden gem in Islington. Went for dinner yesterday evening as a group of 4. We had almost everything on the menu, including both desserts and a fair few from the wine selection! Absolutely delicious food, we could have had it all twice over and fantastic wine and service to match. Definitely go, you won't be disappointed. We'll be back!

Really enjoyed the tapas style menu. And the wine selection is quite varied and great. Surprised by the rose choices. The restaurant is tucked away and nice for a larger group of people. Also great for an intimate dinner with a friend or partner.

Delicious night - great vibes in a small restaurant. Fabulous wine and great food to accompany!! Short menu- but everything was amazing on it. Good value for money too - definitely recommend.

Yelp
I read about this new opening in Islington online and decided to drop by last weekend. We live a little closer to Provisions, the other wine bar in the area, which was super busy when we were there the previous weekend, and by comparison Linden Stores is still in ramp up mode. It opened at the end of last year when Prawn on the Lawn moved to their new location just down the street. We were the only guests when we arrived around 6:30 pm and had our choice of tables both upstairs and downstairs. The downstairs has a cozy little fireplace, but seemed too isolated when empty so we took a table upstairs. They had two whites and two reds available by the glass, but also a large selection of things by the bottle, which could also be bought for takeaway. While we were there, there was a group that came in just to buy a bottle for takeaway, and the wines are quite reasonable with plenty in the low-to-mid teens in terms of price. If you drink in, you pay a £10 corkage, which is the same as it is at Provisions. We had two glasses of Rioja and a cheese plate with homemade crackers. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to try the rest of the menu, but I hear it's good, so we will just have to come back!

Yelp
Our first time at Linden Stores, which I'd read about on The Nudge, and it really surpassed our expectations. Very interesting wine list which was a lot of fun to choose from - the staff were very helpful and knowledgable. A nice simple interior, with white tiles and all the bottles on display, made it feel like a cool wine bar rather than a stuffy restaurant. But the food was the star: absolutely delicious sweet onion fritters, followed by a super-fresh dish of tomatoes, broad beans and goat cheese, cod cheeks with tartare sauce, and 'spuds' with Bovril mayo. Bit too full for dessert but couldn't resist the elderflower pannacotta with strawberries. Dishes brought when ready, so it was easy to share while enjoying our (reasonably-priced) wine. Everyone seemed to be having a really good time without that Friday night rowdiness, so the atmosphere was very pleasant. Service was attentive without being annoying - someone even ran halfway down the road after me because I'd forgotten my sunglasses. Bill was £76 for two pre-service, for above dishes plus a bottle of wine, two glasses of wine, and a post-dinner Talisker (the glasses are all a fiver), which seemed very reasonable for such good quality. The sort of place I'll recommend to everyone I know.
