Lion Kitchen - Review - Sunset - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"For Chinese dishes like wonton soup, boiled dumplings, and Peking duck, Lion Kitchen fits the bill. The cash-only Outer Sunset restaurant also has a selection of clay pots with curry seafood, beef brisket, and more. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Julia Chen

The food was fresh, the portions were generous, and the staff was welcoming. We had a great dinner. My kids especially enjoyed the wonton soup. We live in the neighborhood and are so happy to see this place finally open!

This place just opened and we are very impressed! Highlights were the dumplings, the shrimp with walnuts, and the peach gum dessert. The staff were very attentive and helpful. Happy to have a new place in the neighborhood and I will be back!

Dumplings are hand made and fresh. Delicious! I tried a both a spicy and non spicy ones. Also, their lobster sauce prawns were awesome, One of my favorite dishes. Hopefully they bring in more drink options. Although I was happy with tea, I would have liked something a little sweeter or carbonated.

Six of us were here for dinner after an afternoon concert. Food was delicious. We ordered 7 dishes to share with 6 and the bill with tax and tips is less than $20 each.

Fresh, flavourful food! Large portions at reasonable prices. We just happened to stop by on the way to Golden Gate park, and it was a great decision :) Recommend the pork and chive dumplings, the Mapo tofu, and the salt and pepper prawns.

Excited for this new opening. The portions are VERY generous and everything was great! The take home frozen dumplings are a must as well.

This Chinese Restaurant just opened today! For now, it is cash only. I was very excited yesterday, to ask someone there about the opening and now I'm excited to have a new Chinese restaurant near where I live! Rice is included with the entrees and they have all the standard menu items near the Judah St and 29th Ave trolley stop! The sign has been there for a while, but now it is open!

Yelp
good authentic food. We got takeout, and it didn't disappoint. It was spicy and good. the food was cooked fast.

Yelp
The food was delicious and the space is pleasantly open for a small restaurant. The prices are very reasonable - especially from their long list of $10.99 specials. They just opened recently so they don't have their credit card system up yet - they take cash and Zelle for now. Great fresh flavors and big value.

Yelp
"Lion kitchen" sign has been up for ages, restaurant is finally open! We ordered: green beans, salt and pepper prawns, shrimp fried rice. All were delicious, but the prawns were incredible! Came on a weeknight and we were one of two seated tables - I don't think many people realize this place is open yet. As an update, they do take card now. They are offering 10% off many dishes as a grand opening special! Come in and support a local business!

Yelp
After seeing all the 5 star reviews, our expectations were very high. Being a new restaurant, we did expect the service to be slow, but were disappointed when our dry fried beef ho fun came looking extremely "shiny" and VERY greasy. Flavor was good but was so oily. Also ordered the pan fried dumplings which came deep fried (even though the picture showed actual pan fried). The filling was tasty and would have been much more enjoyable without the tough deep fried wrapper: Sadly, we couldn't even "melt" the bread with our tea since it came lukewarm. Couldn't get the waitress's attention to ask for hot tea. She checked in with us when we were done eating so we asked for hot tea. Dropped off a new pot and it was the same lukewarm (almost room temperature) tea so maybe that's how they serve it. Hopefully these are just growing pains and will see future improvement.

Yelp
Good food and service! Came here on a weekend afternoon while there were not too many people in the restaurant, but many people grabbing their orders to-go. There's seating available for a few dozen people, and the furniture/decorations are pretty typical of this type of restaurant. I ordered their Dried Scallop and Egg White Fried Rice to-go, and it was ready within 15 minutes. The portion itself was generous for the price, and there was as a good amount of dried scallop, egg whites, and onions sprinkled around the rice. The dish was perfectly seasoned, not dry, and part of a satisfying lunch. I would recommend this place for their rice, and I have to try their many other dishes next!

Yelp
The place was new. 10% off grand opening special for some regular dishes, except for the specials. We got mushroom wood ear dumpling, pan fried tomato beef noodle, and eggplants (comes with a bowl of rice). We didnt know eggplants were a little spicy. It was good. They were generous with portion size. You might need to ask for serving spoons. Parking was no problem since we got there when they open for dinner. Right at the corner, Grey outside but magenta pink inside. Service was good. Never seen the teapot like that. It didnt spill or drip like old traditional ones.

Yelp
Newly opened Chinese restaurant on 29th and Judah. They've been renovating for the past few weeks. The menu is a variety of stir fried, dumplings, and noodles. Dumplings are really good. They are fairly large compared to other places. Portions for stir fries are also really good. Cash only for now.

Yelp
We ordered 5 dishes: Beef chow fun with gravy(wet)-delicious noodles with smoky "wok hay", tender beef, shitake mushrooms, and bok choy. Chicken, stir fried with rice noodles-tasty dish with smoky flavored noodles and white chicken meat. Special now for $9.99 Salt and pepper pork chop with rice. Special now for $10.99. Delicious, crispy pork chop with good seasoning, and not overly salty. Salt and pepper grouper with rice. Special price of $10.99. Tender pieces of fried fish that were lightly seasoned in crispy batter. Salt and pepper chicken wings-8 fried chicken wings with salt/pepper seasoning. We really enjoyed our dinner tonight. There were only 2 tables with customers, as most people don't know this place exists. They now take credit card payments, thank goodness. We would have ordered more food if we knew sooner that they accepted credit card payments now. We know better for our next visit. Anxious to try more of their menu items. It's great that they currently have so many $10.99 meals, as a grand opening special, so try them now for a great price. It's always good to support new neighborhood businesses.

Yelp
Great neighborhood spot! We've been walking by waiting for months for Lion Kitchen to open, and they did not disappoint. The food is delicious and the interior is bright and tidy. We've gone twice this week and intend on making Lion Kitchen our regular dinner spot.

Yelp
Great location, lots of dining room seating, friendly staff. First time here, so I just ordered Dry Beef Ho Fun TO GO. I've had better. Rice noodles were NOT the traditional XX-wide size which makes chow fun in a restaurant special, but they had a nice smoky flavor. Meat was not well tenderized, some chewy, untrimmed pieces, and not much flavor or color to make it stand out. Bean sprouts were not as crunchy, slightly overcooked. Scallions were sparse and hard to find. Could use some improvement:)

Yelp
Try this place based on all the 5 star reviews. It's close to my house, so decided to pick up myself to get a bit of exercise in. I can say that parking is just ok if you are driving there. Basically just street parking between houses. There aren't really any meter parking or parking lots. Place is newly remodeled and clean inside. Kitchen is behind a door and the few times they opened the door, I could see that the kitchen is very busy and a couple of Chinese cooks shouting at each other. There were a couple of waitresses serving and taking in the orders over the phone, Our food wasn't ready when we stopped by, I live about 7 blocks away. They told me that they were making it. I think they are doing more take out than in house orders at this time. There were only 3 tables being served while we were waiting, so not very busy in the restaurant. Food Beef chow fun dry. 5/5. The chow fun had good wok hay and there was plenty of it. Sweet and sour pork. 5/5. Pork was well coated in the sweet and sour sauce and they had nice pieces of pork. I hate it when they just fry up fatty pieces of pork Beef and broccoli 5/5. This was excellent. Broccoli was firm, just the way I like it. Hot and sour soup. 4/5. So I didn't realize that this was a seafood hot and sour soup, I saw hot and sour soup and was in a mood for it, but it's the first time I've had it with seafood. Why did I deduct a point? It wasn't because of the seafood. Normally, hot and sour soup is made with white pepper for the hot part. They used chili flakes. It was spicy, but not the right kind of spicy that hits you at the back of the throat. I would be sort of ok ordering this again if someone else wanted hot and sour soup, but it just didn't hit the spot for me Tomato beef chow mein 3/5. My husband thought it was just ok. Now the description did say that it was pan fried, but it's really deep fried noodles. Pan fried implies that there are crispy and soft noodles to me. The tomato beef part which they packed separately was fine. We just would not order this again as the noodles were too crispy for our liking. Overall, I would definitely come back. Please note that their menu is geared more Americanized Chinese food which is what we ordered. If you are looking for Chinese food with fermented sauces and pickled vegetables that grandma and grandpa like, that is a smaller part of the menu. Next time, I'm going to explore their clay pots and more authentic items Oh one more thing. They did not have a cash register and were struggling to give me change. Not sure they have the money thing down yet.

Yelp
We came here to try their $10.99 specials. I had the salt and pepper shrimp and my husband had the salt and pepper spareribs. Both were very good but the shrimp stood out. Big portions and delicious. We were the only ones dining in. There were so many to go orders that kept them busy. We will be back to try other dishes.

Definitely come try to spot out. Great Chinese spot with yummy cheap dishes. We got the salt and pepper pork chops, dry beef ho fun, and dumplings. All were very good! Service is great from this family owned spot. Come check them out!

Yelp
I was delighted to find that Lion Kitchen has open just down the street from my favorite laundromat. I stopped in today and ordered the pork and cabbage dumplings based on the recommendation from my server, a very attentive young woman, that dumplings were their specialty. (Indeed, they had a number of selections.). They were some of the best I've ever had--freshly made and perfectly cooked. Their tea is also very good, which is something that has been hit-or-miss with me with other places in the past. With the 10% grand opening discount they're currently offering, my dumpling feast set me back $8.75. (Note: since they just opened, they're cash-only for the present.) I can't wait to go back.

Yelp
Brand new Chinese restaurant in the Sunset. It's newly renovated and is clean and fresh. We had the pork and cabbage dumplings which were juicy and flavorful. We also had the wet style beef ho fun (chow fun) and the chicken with Chinese long beans. Portions were generous and everything was tasty. Staff is friendly and service is quick. We'll definitely be back to try more delicious dishes. They're so new that they're only accepting cash for now. Plenty of street parking available.
