Vegan Paradise El Jardin Opens Inside Mission Square Market | Eater San Diego

"Run by Adrián Villanueva inside Liticker’s Liquor & Deli in Ocean Beach, Litiker’s Mexican & Vegan Cuisine popularized dishes such as açaí bowls, breakfast burritos, vegan wings, and vegan birria quesatacos—many of which Villanueva is now featuring at Mission Square Market’s El Jardín." - Kelly Bone

Google
This place has the best vegetarian Mexican fast food in town, bar none. It's actually one of the reasons I choose to stay here by the beach. Every time we're here we walk down and grab at least one or two meals a day here. I look forward to eating here every visit.

Eric S.

Google
Just because it's in a liquor store doesn't mean the food isn't awesome. It is! The menu is massive and everything is great. And almost everything can be made vegan. And then the liquor store provides any possible drink you could want. A locals treasure Friendly people too

Google
Cheaper than Tacotarian and so flavorful. I used Grubhub. Can’t wait to come in person! I got the tj birria taco, tj asada taco, 3 rolled tacos, and a coke for $30.

Google
Hands down best burrito spot in Ocean Beach. Dare I say San Diego. The menu is huge and expansive. It’s incredible to see a vegan menu this huge. These guys out in an insane amount of work. Amazing tasting rice and beans, yummy salsas, tacos! Burritos, Tortas, quesadillas, tamales. Shoot, even pizzas, burgers and sandwiches. They got it all!

Google
An evolving multitude of accessible items to tether your taste bud tamperings…quaint staple in town with outside seating & easy to go to the tummy of anytime things. Tab on up for the homies here!

I love that there are many vegan options.... But like one review said it feels like frozen and reheated food. I understand being in a liquor store you can't exactly be fresh to go, but I would at least hope the tamale wasn't still half hard :(I got the chicken tamale thinking it would taste somewhat like chicken, but there wasn't really a flavor, and honestly tasted like cardboard. I forced myself to finish it because I hate wasting food. Disappointed. I thought there should have been more cheese considering the sz. *Sigh* Rating 4 stars because there are a lot of options regardless of flavor. Which is hard to come by being vegan. Definitely do NOT get the chicken tamale bowl. Not sure how they even consider it a "bowl" tbh.

Google
Top notch vegan Mexican food! I order Doordash from these guys all the time and they never disappoint. The proteins they use are really well seasoned and everything I've tried so far has been amazing.

Google
I used to come here all the time because I'm vegan and it's very convenient. But then I started coming and getting the same item and each time it would be different, this happened for months... Different prices, different ingredients...Sometimes receiving a totally different burrito from what I ordered. And I did all of those for about 23 to $25 per burrito, that's more expensive than Eweron 😂 I think I'm done supporting this company. I'm tired of not getting for what I pay for and then when I do ask them to redo it or fix it, I get attitude.

Yelp
This spot is peak OB San Diego energy...a true hidden gem with a shockingly hearty vegan option. It's tucked inside the corner of this cool little liquor store, the kind of place where you can grab your food, grab a drink, and catch an ocean breeze all in one stop. Total local-hangout vibes... the type of spot where someone will randomly tell you wild stories about "back in their OB days" while you're just trying to pick up your order. If you haven't been, go...it honestly feels like you're tasting a piece of OB history. We'll definitely be back for round two.

Yelp
LOVE this place! This is our first time trying them out, drawn in by the excellent selection of vegan options. We ordered delivery, and the food arrived hot. The vegan birria plate and the vegan chicken ranchero each came with 3 corn tortillas. The vegan birria was good, but we found the vegan chicken ranchero to be too bland for our liking. The vegan incredible burrito was great, a bit messy though. The vegan California burrito was the favorite - super flavorful.

Amanda H.

Yelp
This place has the BEST vegan burritos, including breakfast burritos. So many options. 10/10 every time.
google avatar

Maya K.

Yelp
Bomb every time. I've tried the breakfast burrito, rolled tacos, and chicken quesadilla! All very good! The hot carrots are 10/10, don't forget to get those! They accept ebt too which is amazing! Staff is always nice! I recommend calling ahead of time and picking up because it can get busy during dinner hours
google avatar

Yelp
This spot is awesome! The food is super affordable and tasty! Its a walk up counter in a grocery store with seating outside. Service is quick and the best part is that they have a ton of vegan options! Making it a perfect spot for everyone!
google avatar

Yelp
Food is amazing and they have so many options if you are plant-based! Love that it's fresh and fast right by the beach :)

Yelp
I think this place could use a lil more love. I truly appreciate the ability to make almost every non vegan item on the menu into a vegan dish. I had ordered the al pastor vegan tacos and unfortunately they were extremely salty and had way too much seasoning. However I will say, the jackfruit that was used for the Al pastor texture was spot on. Shout out to the young cashier/cook. The liquor store cashier lacks a lot of customer service skills. Young man was on his phone as he attended to us. Didn't greet us when we walked in nor did he try and make conversation. Hope he didn't have a bad day, however definitely didn't make us feel acknowledged.

Yelp
Litickers Mexican and Vegan Cuisine is a go-to spot whenever we are in San Diego. Almost everything on the menu can be made vegan, and the food is consistently delicious. The fish burrito and the wings are my favorites, both flavorful and satisfying. You can tell the food is made with care and attention. They also have a great selection of drinks, making it an easy choice for a casual and tasty meal.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the Acai Bowl but decided not to consume it. The food server was not wearing gloves to prepare it after being the cashier also. The Tamales were good, at least they were prepared ahead of time and wrapped in corn husk. I heard the tacos are good but they need to be better with cleanliness.

Yelp
I've only ate here twice and I enjoyed both meals. Also compliments to the chef for hooking up my order. They were very genuine with the portions & gave me plenty of food to enjoy. However, I noticed they did over charge me by a couple dollars. I don't know if because sauce is extra or what, but I really can't complain since they hooked me up good! I do recommend this place to try vegan or not vegan and check your bill!

Yelp
If you grew up in San Diego or Southern California, you have a certain expectation of Mexican food. If you then suddenly stop eating meat, well, good luck finding equivalent vegetarian/vegan versions. Liticker's solved this. Vegan birria, adobada, carne asada, chicken, you name it -- done right. These are not the craft options that exist elsewhere, it's the street style San Diego x Mexican food you expect, but without meat. I highly recommend anything with the vegan birria.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was mid to be kind. We ordered every flavor of rolled taco, but they gave us only potato and tossed random "carne asada" onto it. I would say as a plant eater, I would skip this spot, UNLESSSS it was late and you needed a vegan option. They did not listen to orders of condiments on the side, and they loaddddd you up with fake cheese. To me the unsalted guac and fake cheese combo really didn't do it. DO NOT take her here as your first choice
google avatar

Yelp
I have never been to the actual place but have ordered through Uber Eats many times when I'm in town. The burritos are loaded and are so flavorful. I love that there is tons of vegan options. The salsas are delicious as well!!
google avatar

Peter O.

Yelp
Really good vegan options! Their vegan menu is overwhelmingly comprehensive! I would love to try everything on it, however it would take a long time. This is definitely not a bad thing either!
google avatar

Yelp
I stop in here most days for an energy drink, a Gatorade, or whatever I need that day. Their convenience items and snacks are very cheap and easy to grab. Their normal liquor is about the right price, they have individual beers so you can try a few for cheap, and they have a few rarer whiskeys available too. The food counter is excellent! All of their burritos are awesome and they do a great birria. Everything is cooked up within view and doesn't take too long. They also have some specialty Mexican pizzas that are unique and great. It's almost always the same guy at the counter and he asks how my day is going and gives my dog a little snack.

Gabrielle F.

Yelp
Worst breakfast sandwich I've ever had. There wasn't even egg or cheese on the other side of the sandwich it was only bagel? It was $9 and I tipped and unfortunately got 2 of these sad sandwiches. What a bummer. I'll gladly stop back in for a refund.

Yelp
Yesterday I cruised by Litickers MexicanAndVeganCuisine to try their Chicken & Shrimp Fajitas Combo which was grilled chicken and shrimp, bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, rice, beans, salsa, lettuce, fresh guacamole, and tortillas. Dayumnnnn! So good. They continue to make incredible food over there. This combo now gets bumped up to my favorite menu item they offer. This combo could easily be split with a friend as I ate the second half of this meal for breakfast. If you haven't tried their food, you're missing out! If you've had their food, you know just how delicious it is. This gem is located inside Litickers Liquor on Voltaire between Cable and Bacon.

Yelp
Recently been more interested in vegetarian and vegan options so I decided to give this place a try! Food: Ordered a vegan hash brown burrito and while it was tasty and a decent size, it was definitely lacking flavor and needed salsas to make it better. It would be too dry to eat by itself. It took about 10 minutes. Service: Pretty awful. The man ordering in front of us had a 10 minute conversation with the cashier while we were waiting to order which was not okay. The lady at the register didn't seem to care about our business and had the most apathetic attitude. She didn't want to be there and clearly didn't want us to be there either. Parking: There's a small lot on the side that's pretty empty and reserved for this place so that's nice especially because OB is a busy spot
google avatar

Yelp
Both vegan and non vegan options are available. They have a large variety of vegan options including Vegan Birria street tacos for $4 Note that they do not have vegan consume to go with it. Vegan options include vegan meats such as seitan and soy, as well as vegan cheese. They did a great job with the texture of the vegan Birria "meat!" I still ordered the consume, although it wasn't vegan, and it was pretty oily and didn't have much flavor,

Yelp
5 stars all day long Litickers is the fuckin bomb! Lesss gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooi

Yelp
We were on vacation and so excited to find vegan Mexican food! We don't have many options in our hometown. I ordered the vegan carne asada nachos and a side of home fries and a Jamaican drink. My wife ordered French fry nachos with vegan chicken and the corn in a cup. My wife loved her fries. She also loved the corn. I had a bite of the corn-it tasted good but was 50% mayo. Yuck. My order was a lukewarm (literally)mess. I ordered NACHOS-meaning chips. I got French fries. I hate French fries. They weren't even good French fries. The carne asada was weird. It had an odd tang to it, and from the texture I'm not quite certain it was vegan. Then it was covered in this gray-green slip that I guess was guacamole. I ordered a half order, which was $15. I ate 3 bites but was so grossed out that was it. The home fries-I expected chunks of crispy potatoes that were fried and seasoned with some house blend of spices. Nope-more disgusting fries. Not even salted. And cold. The Jamaican drink on the menu (I checked 3 times!) said it was 32 ounces. It was 12 ounces. And it was warmer than the fries! Not a speck of ice. I'm really surprised we didn't get a side of food poisoning. Stay away!!

Yelp
Wow what a big surprise. It's inside a convenient store. They had tons of options both vegetarian and regular. My husband had Carne Asada taco. It was very tasty and I had a smoothie. We will definitely be stopping by again. Service was very good and quick.

Yelp
The service was great, super friendly gentleman that helped us out. The menu was great, so much to choose from and even easy for my Jewish natural foodist friend to eat from their menu. And trust me it is never easy for him to pick

MJ I.

Yelp
Absolute trash! First off, I was given the wrong food. CA burritos do not have beans and lettuce. The food I was given was NOT vegan! After going back to get my order corrected, my CA burrito was much smaller than the initial one I received and was NOT worth the $17. This burrito tastes absolutely HORRIBLE. I love onions, but these chunks are WAY too big and take over the bland burrito. Plus the place is in a connivence store and does not look like it would pass a random inspection. This food will literally make your stomach hurt. Take your money to Hugo's Cocina about 4 blocks down. I should have stuck with what in knew and gave my money to Hugo's Cocina, at least there I would get good food, good service, and have a nice place to sit and eat.

Sarah O.

Yelp
Total hole in the wall spot for vegans, absolutely obsessed. So many menu options, so many vegan options, and the food is incredible. Every time I'm in town, I pick up food here. It's a spot for the food, not the location. Grab the amazing grub and go eat it on the beach.
google avatar

Sergio G.

Yelp
Definitely not a place I would try again. I ordered a Vegan Cali burrito and it had decent taste but literally a drop of guacamole. For a $13 burrito I was expecting more. The customer service was also not too great. I would not recommend this place. Horrible experience
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Tried this on a whim in Uber eats. But should have checked here first. What's up with the quality here? Ordered salsa with my burrito and received none. I was going to let that slide until I got a mouth full of paper in my sandwich. The flavor is ok, but I don't think they give a crap about what they send out. Gross guys. Come on. Now I'm dissecting my food to see what other surprises you left me.
google avatar

Yelp
BEST VEGAN FOOD! I'm genuinely surprised by the 3 star reviews, as I have never had a bad experience Litickers! Perhaps the vegan menu options are better than the regular food here. All the vegan food is AMAZING, large portions bursting with flavor! Even my boyfriend (non-vegan) orders off the vegan menu now because of how flavorful the food is! This time we ordered the Mucho Nacho Burrito and Carne Asada Fries, in addition to the California Burrito we order every time we come. Let me tell you, we use to absolutely devour the vegan California Burrito, BUT the Mucho Nacho somehow even surpassed that! One pound of carne asada, beans, red sauce, chipotle aioli, guacamole, cheese, salsa, and corn chips makes for the perfect meal. While Litickers does have outdoor seating, I love that you can drive three short blocks to eat at the beach. Love Litickers!

Yelp
Lovely little optional vegan spot with delicious food. Service was so fast as well! Loved the tacos.

Yelp
I had to put personal feelings aside and try this place again, this time I brought a friend with me. I learned my lesson and ordered in person vs online. I raved about how great the wings and pizza were for being vegan. It is indeed on the higher price range but it's healthier alternative for fast food and has a lot of flavor. The disappointment this time came from the wings and pizza. My friend wanted to try the garlic wings which these were a dry wing and didn't come with sauce. The flavor was ok but the disappointment was the texture and how it was cooked. The first time I thought they were great. This time the outside was crispy but something was wrong with the inside. Perhaps it wasn't cooked long enough? the inside was and odd gooey sticky texture, it just didn't taste right. Definitely not the same when I first had them. The pizza was also a disappointment, it was bread with bbq sauce and chicken nuggets thrown on top. It didn't have a pizza taste and needed more cheese. It felt like eating bread with bbq sauce and not a pizza. My friend was a fan of the chicken nuggets as far as the flavor and texture go but the pizza can be improved by being similar to the adobada pizza. Have more cheese and then instead of just an entire chicken nugget have it cut up into pieces and put that on the pizza. It's supposed to be a bbq chicken pizza and as far as vegan pizza goes it was ehh. Place seems to be a hit and miss. It does have a lot of potential. I want this place to succeed but there is some work that needs to be done. Consistency and flavor is key and this time it lacked in both.

Yelp
WOW!!!! The best vegan Mexican spot in all of SD! I'm a vegan foodie who has traveled around all over for the last 7 years trying vegan food and no vegan Mexican spot compares. The beer battered fish tacos and California burrito are insanely flavorful. The beer battered tacos and fries were SOOO crispy. While waiting for my food I shopped around the market. They have so many vegan options and fun snacks/ drinks. Can't wait to go try more of the vegan menu and check out more unique snacks from the market.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome tasty vegan Mexican food! Have never had a bad meal and it's a go to destination each time we visit the area.
google avatar

Daniella S.

Yelp
My first time here and I ordered a vegan cali burrito before closing. I've never heard of this place but I was eager to try the vegan food since it's rare to find Mexican versions of it ! I really enjoyed it along with the salsas that came with it. I'm excited to go back and try the other options on the menu ! ^_^

Colby T.

Yelp
Solid Mexican food. The fact that they have a whole vegan menu is a plus for people with different dietary requirements. Four stars because they do have a tendency to mix up orders and in a city with amazing Mexican food options, this is a solid choice but not the best.
google avatar

Taylor B.

Yelp
This was our second time at Litickers. We ate lunch here every day of our visit to San Diego. I had the TJ style vegan tacos three days in a row - carne asada, birria, chicken and abodaba. The vegan birria and abodaba is PHENOMENAL. This place is awesome because they have a huge vegan menu, as well as a huge omni menu. I wish we lived closer because I would try their entire menu. Thank you to the wonderful staff for always being helpful and kind.
google avatar

Paula S.

Yelp
This is the best vegan burrito I've had in San Diego. Definitely worth a try. They have so many vegan options to select from. I had the Cali burrito which was absolutely delicious! My husband had the vegan chorizo burrito which was also excellent. They do offer outdoor seating, delivery, or pick up.
google avatar

Dee G.

Yelp
We ordered a Vegan hash brown breakfast burrito. It was 90% refried beans on one end with little evidence of hash browns, tofu, or cheese, and no vegan sausage, the other half had the actual listed ingredients but it was still mostly beans. It was big, and tasted ok. Also ordered the vegan fish burrito. Most of the fish burrito was just cabbage, salsa, etc, because the two small pieces of vegan fish were at one end of the burrito. The biggest disappointment with both was that the ingredients weren't evenly distributed, and both were mostly the cheap filler ingredients.
google avatar

Terry V.

Yelp
Just had the Birria combo plate. Amazing. Meat was so flavorful and they are generous with their portions. I don't write reviews, but I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Annie W.

Yelp
I would give 5 stars, but the service could use improvement. I asked to replace tofu with rice and beans in a burrito and was told I'd be charged extra. I asked if rice and beans are more expensive than tofu and was told they aren't. So I asked why I'd be charged more for the swap, and the lady said it was because I was adding rice and beans. And I said yes, but I'm not getting tofu. And then she just stared at me. So, in the end I got the burrito without tofu and without rice and beans, but did I get a discount for removing an item? Of course not. It's frustrating to me that every time I've come here the service is never welcoming or happy for the business at best, and resentful and unfriendly at worst. I come in friendly and happy to be getting food here and it sucks the enjoyment out to deal with that. What's the deal? That said, the food is good and I love that they have such a big vegan menu. I would recommend it to any vegans coming through the area, but don't expect very much in terms of service.
google avatar

Jasmine Z.

Yelp
I really didn't want to write a bad review on Litickers bcz I usually love the food the fact that majority of it is Vegan is really great. HOWEVER today my fiancé ordered a garlic shrimp plate that came with rice & beans. The rice tasted old, tasted just off so then me & my fiancé smelled it and it smelled so bad. Y'all need to fr stop putting old food in everyones orders she could of gotten food poisoning and then what. Watch what you're doing pay attention & relay the message with your staff. I can't express this enough. I'll never be ordering rice from here again that was foul af!

Megan R.

Yelp
Sorry to leave a 1 star but this place was a mess when I walked in. I work in restaurants and the kitchen usually tells the story.. and it sure did on how my stomach felt shortly after eating here.... Wanted to love it and support it but wow was this a total health hazard and the quality of the rice is suspect... lots of plastic rice out there and this could be the case... Clean this place up. Use a separate grill for "vegan" since all I could taste was the left over dead animal juices on my burrito. I took a few bites and into the trash it went.... Bad bad bad...

Eli S.

Yelp
The sweet corn tamale and chicken and mole tamale were vegan and hit the spot! Vegan Tamale Bowl

Diana A.

Yelp
During a recent visit to San Diego, my husband and I were in search of a bottle of Grand Marnier to help make Cadillac Margaritas at a friend's gathering the following day. As we were unfamiliar with the area, we entrusted Yelp to help find a decent liquor store and we landed here. Not only did this store have what we were looking for (in multiple size bottles), the employee (I'm assuming owner) was so warm and welcoming. And on top of that, this store has a huge grill on one side serving up fresh Mexican food - tacos, burritos, etc. What a fantastic business venture! There's some parking on the street in front but a side lot with more parking that is easier to access. I'm not sure how safe the neighborhood is because there were some sketchy folks lingering around but I'm sure they too just wanted their taco and beer fix!
google avatar

Sam V.

Yelp
Litickers is a spot I keep coming back to in OB. Their menu is huge with a large variety of items and they have tons of vegan options which is super cool. I usually get the birria tacos from here which are so amazing ! But sometimes I switch it up, today I got the vegan pollo asada bowl to try it out and it was really good and cost me $14. The woman who works the register is always very nice, this spot can get pretty busy though at times especially late nights on the weekends, so keep that in mind !

Neil M.

Yelp
Good vegan Mexican food at fair prices. Not really a dine-in place but a few tables outside.
google avatar

Catherine W.

Yelp
Based on the reviews we popped in for 2 vegan breakfast burritos. Very tasty but too much oil for me. My husband said they were talking about us so that's a thumbs down as well.

Jenna B.

Yelp
For a liquor store restaurant, it was a delicious vegan option with a massive menu. We got the burritos- vegan and regular- both were super good.

Hayley F.

Yelp
Massive tacos, but they were out of a lot of options when we visited. The tacos were fulfilling but did not blow me away. Also, you don't go here for the ambiance or quality of service..
google avatar

Michelle F.

Yelp
I'll be honest. Didn't expect much from a food counter in a liquor store. But wow. This place has an incredible selection of vegan burritos and tacos. My vegan "pollo" burrito was delicious. Very friendly service too. I can't wait to go again!
