London’s New Restaurant Openings - London - The Infatuation

"Brace yourself for restaurant buzzwords because Little Fires is a hi-fi mezcal bar in Shoreditch. The Oaxacan spot sounds exciting as well as on-trend, though, with a hefty tequila and mezcal menu, cocktails like Corn Coladas and Chimichurri Martinis, and small plates like plantain molotes and duck mole tacos. And yes, there will be vinyl." - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

So happy we got to try this little gem in Bethnal green, just steps away from shoreditch high street. To our pleasant surprise we just learnt that it recently opened. Although the restaurant was packed with people ( naturally on Friday night), Kat was so hospitable and welcoming and found us a cozy table. The food is great and I highly recommend the beef tartar♥️🥲.. we don’t drink alcohol so our their choices of mocktails were great, we had a margarita and it was perfect. Overall lovely food, great drinks and lovely and kind team.

This bar is the epitome of what’s wrong with eating out in London. Please don’t give them your money. My girlfriend and I spent £140 (inc 2 drinks each) and left somewhat hungry. It’s one of the best examples of small-plate-scamming I’ve ever seen. Most the dishes lacked seasoning; the chips were half cold half hot (clearly got the left overs out the fryer from the table that ordered 20 mins before us); and every plate is ~20% overpriced. I will say, the mezcal cocktails were flavoursome and unique - not just tacky sweet cocktails you can find elsewhere. You can tell they cared with the drinks. Christian, the bar manager, was also rude and utterly unwelcoming; one or two of his staff were sweet and hospitable. This guy should be embarrassed though - a rude little man running an utter shambles of a restaurant. The best thing about this place is that it’ll hopefully shut down in a few months and we’ll get something new. Save yourself the money; go anywhere else.

Unfortunately I had a really poor experience here. The service was exceptionally slow - our drinks took 20 minutes to arrive and the food took 1h 20 minutes. We were super hungry, so asked for guacamole to tide us over, which then only arrived in line with the rest of the food. Once we started to receive some of the dishes ordered (this was still super slow, and the dishes came out gradually over the course of 20 minutes), the chef came out of the kitchen to inform us that one of the dishes wasn't even available. The food was fine, but not worth the wait. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone

Pretty underwhelming experience. As an American in London I’m always keen to try Mexican joints as I miss the food a lot. But this wasn’t the fix for me. The food menu was very limited and also quite expensive for the portion (£13 for two scallops marinated on a skewers, £10 for a tiny mushroom quesadilla split in half). Luckily we had a discount otherwise I would’ve been really bummed at the prices we paid for the food we ate. Service was great though, very friendly, and would maybe return if they expanded or updated their menu

I booked this restaurant for my birthday over a week in advance only to find out that they have let it out for a private event without letting me know. My booking was cancelled with 2 hours to spare.I have had to make emergency plans which added a lot of stress.

As someone who loves Mexican cuisine and makes a point of trying every new spot in London, I really wanted to enjoy this one — but it didn’t quite hit the mark. The drinks were nice, though on the smaller side. The food, unfortunately, was a bit underwhelming. The chicharrones with guacamole and totopos looked promising but turned out to be a few pork bits on top of store-bought chips with a drizzle of avocado cream, rather than proper guacamole, and there was an unexpected fishy taste. The mushroom quesadilla felt more like a Cornish pasty and seemed to be made with flour rather than corn. The salmon was very salty — almost like mackerel — and the plantain croquettes were dense and lacked flavour. Service also felt a bit detached; we had to call staff over a few times, and dishes weren’t really explained. The space itself is lovely, clearly a lot of care went into the design, but I’d love to see that same attention extend to the food and hospitality.

The food is amazing and the drinks are so good (love the mezcal based ones) Downstairs is quite unique with Hi-Fi, feels like a speakeasy. My new favorite place in Shoreditch.

Very nice staff, super friendly, lovely atmosphere. The menu is in reverse type, small font that disappears. It cannot be read if you are over 35. The lovely gentleman who was our waiter didn’t really understand our questions and could not respond to what we were asking. A more knowledgable woman did step in for him at times. There is no sparkling water on offer at this restaurant, nor is there guacamole as they had run out from the night before. We found this to be poor for a Mexican restaurant, considering there was ample time (25 hours?) to rectify this. Regardless, we had some rather tasty fries that were seasoned very nicely. We had 2 plates each of tuna ceviche and duck taco to share. The two tuna plates were placed in front of one guest and the others another guest. There were 3 of us. We asked for plates so we could share as we had ordered. One of the duck plates was cold and unpleasant - it was not eaten and we were not asked about this. I asked for a second marguerita and our waiter did not understand until I asked him to check what I had already ordered and please bring another the same. The 2nd one came not the same but I drank it anyhow - these were fantastic cocktails I have to say. Although there were a few things to complain about, it would have been difficult to complain to a waiter who doesn’t quite understand the assignment to begin with and we wanted to keep things pleasant. And it was pleasant, but… 1. Please train your staff on the art of table serving 2. Please make sure all food is served at the correct temperature 3. Please can you stock sparkling water, especially being a bar destination it is a basic ask 4. Guacamole should also be standard at such an establishment (also we should not wait 15 minutes after ordering to find out it is not available) The atmosphere is great and the staff is super friendly and it is good value, but there are definitely operational issues here.
